Celtics-Trail Blazers Preview

After what Doc Rivers deemed an uplifting victory, the Boston Celtics will try to deliver a strong finish to their western road trip. A matchup with the slumping Portland Trail Blazers would appear to help their cause.

While seeking to even their record on their five-game trek, the Celtics will try to send the Blazers to their longest losing streak in seven seasons Sunday night.

Despite playing in its third city in four nights, Boston gave a refreshing performance Friday in a 113-88 victory over Phoenix. The Celtics scored the first 13 points, and Jeff Green led five players in double figures with a season-high 31 while starting in place of veteran Kevin Garnett, who was given the night off.

"I just tried to make a statement early and that's what I did by attacking the rim and getting to the free throw line," said Green, who sat out last season after undergoing surgery to fix an aortic aneurysm.

Boston (29-26) also got 10 points off the bench from Jordan Crawford in his first game since being acquired from Washington on Thursday. The Celtics' win was their first in eight road games against Western Conference teams and helped them improve to 9-3 since star point guard Rajon Rondo's season-ending knee injury.

"It's just a feel-good win," Rivers said.

Boston will try to earn another such victory while continuing its recent dominance over Portland (25-30). The Celtics have won 13 of 14 matchups and are 5-1 in their last six visits to the Rose Garden.

While Rondo was serving a two-game suspension, Green scored a team-best 19 points off the bench in a 96-78 rout over the visiting Blazers on Nov. 30. Boston is making its first visit to Portland since an 88-78 win on Jan. 27, 2011, and will face a team that's dropped seven in a row.

All but one of those losses, however, came on the road. The Blazers, who are starting a four-game homestand, had a four-game win streak at the Rose Garden snapped with a 102-98 defeat to Phoenix on Tuesday. They fell 111-107 at the Los Angeles Lakers three days later.

Portland held a one-point lead with four minutes to go Friday but made just two of its final seven shots and committed a pair of turnovers. J.J. Hickson and Nicolas Batum each finished with 22 points, but LaMarcus Aldridge had 15 while dealing with foul trouble.

"I was glad the way our team fought. We've had a rough stretch and came out and played aggressively, we pushed the tempo and did a lot of good things out there," coach Terry Stotts said. "I thought we played well enough to win the game but unfortunately we didn't."

The Blazers haven't lost eight in a row since dropping their final eight games in 2005-06.

Hickson will try to help his team snap its skid while extending his team-record streak of shooting performances. The post player has shot at least 50.0 percent in 18 straight games and was 11 of 15 Friday.

He went 3 for 7 (42.9 percent) and scored 11 against Boston in November, and has averaged 11.8 points on 50.0 percent shooting in six career starts against the Celtics.

Matthews scores 24 as Blazers beat Celtics 92-86

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) The pain in his left leg barely tolerable, Trail Blazers guard Wesley Matthews hoped he wasn't asking for trouble with a step-back 3-pointer at the end of a close game against the Boston Celtics.

"As I was stepping back, I was like, `Oh, my God, what am I doing?' Matthews said. "Instincts take over there. That's mind over matter."

The 3-pointer fell and Matthews finished with 24 points in Portland's 92-86 victory Sunday night which snapped a season-worst seven-game losing streak.

J.J. Hickson's hook shot put the Blazers ahead 86-80, but a pair of reverse layups from Paul Pierce and Brandon Bass pulled the Celtics to 86-82 with 2:54 left.

Kevin Garnett's layup with 1:46 to go tied it, but rookie Damian Lillard answered with his own layup and added a free throw to give Portland back the lead. Matthews, hobbled throughout the game by a lingering injury to his leg and ankle, hit the 3-pointer to give the Blazers the final margin with 53.9 seconds left.

"I was just hoping my leg stayed with me," he said.

Pierce had 23 points and eight assists for the Celtics, who were playing their third game in four nights. Garnett finished with 20 points and nine rebounds.

"When we needed stops, we couldn't get them, when he had a chance to turn the corner, we didn't turn it," Garnett said. "I thought we had opportunities to take advantage of it. Eight out of 10 times we didn't do it. Small things, man. Small things."

Boston was coming off a 113-88 victory at Phoenix on Friday night. Jeff Green scored 31 points against the Suns while Garnett was given the night off to rest, but the veteran forward was back in the starting lineup against the Blazers.

Matthews missed a game because of a sore left leg and elbow but returned Friday night in Portland's 111-107 loss to the Lakers at Staples Center. The injury was obviously still bothering him, and he limped badly coming off the court after the third period.

Later, Matthews said his leg's not even at 80 percent.

"He was great for us offensively and defensively. He's been playing hurt these last couple of games, but that's Wes. He's been a warrior for us the whole year and he got it done tonight," said Hickson, who finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds for his 30th double-double this season.

Guard Eric Maynor also made his debut for Portland after coming to the team in a deal with Oklahoma City at the trade deadline.

Maynor, in his fourth NBA season, missed most of last season with a knee injury and then got bypassed in the Thunder's rotation by second-year guard Reggie Jackson earlier this season. He entered the game late in the first quarter and even played in tandem at times with Lillard, finishing with two points in 15 minutes.

The Celtics jumped out first and led by as many as seven early but Portland pulled in front on Nicolas Batum's 3-pointer, which made it 18-15. Lillard's bank shot and free throw gave the Blazers a 38-27 lead midway through the second quarter.

Courtney Lee hit a 3-pointer and Garnett made a jumper to pull the Celtics to 41-39 with 1:31 left in the first half. Wesley Matthews answered with consecutive 3-pointers and the Blazers led 47-42 at the break.

Avery Bradley's fast-break dunk put the Celtics back in front 55-54 with 8:32 left in the third quarter, but the Blazers regained the lead and were ahead 71-67 going into the final period.

The game stayed close until Matthews made a 3-pointer to put Portland ahead 80-73 with 6:53 to go in the game. LaMarcus Aldridge extended the lead with his own 3 that made it 82-74.

"It was one of those `my bad' games," Boston coach Doc Rivers said. "We just had so many of those `My faults' where we lost sight of guys. We didn't finish any quarter right. It was a gettable game but give them credit, they made some big shots."

Jordan Crawford played 12 minutes but did not score in his second game for the Celtics. He was acquired in a deal with the Washington Wizards at the trade deadline on Thursday, so the Celtics were still working him in.

"He's a scorer, but we're going to ask him to do more than that," Boston coach Doc Rivers said.

Notes: Former Blazers President Larry Miller, now with Nike's Jordan brand, was at the game, as was former Portland Timbers coach John Spencer and Minnesota Lynx forward Maya Moore. ... THE FACTS: Wesley Matthews scored 24 points -- including a decisive 3-pointer with 53.6 seconds left -- as the Portland Trail Blazers ended a season high seven-game losing streak by beating the Boston Celtics 92-86 Sunday night at the Rose Garden. All five starters scored in double figures for the Blazers (26-30), including Nicolas Batum with 18 points, LaMarcus Aldridge with 16, Damian Lillard with 12 and J.J. Hickson with 11. Paul Pierce totaled 23 points, eight assists and seven rebounds for the Celtics (29-27), 1-3 on their current five-game road trip. Kevin Garnett added 20 points and nine rebounds for Boston. The Blazers are in 10th place in the Western Conference, four games behind eighth-place Houston and 2 1/2 games back of the ninth-place Los Angeles Lakers.

THE STAT: Boston shot only 42.4 percent from the field, including 15.4 (2-for-13) from 3-point range. The Blazers won the game at the 3-point line, going 7-for-21.

TURNING POINT: Portland scored the final six points of the game. With the score tied 86-86, Lillard's driving layup and three-point play gave Portland an 89-86 lead with 1:32 remaining. After a missed 3-point attempt by Pierce, Matthews buried the dagger with his trey at the other end.

QUOTABLE II: "We didn't finish any quarter well. Every quarter, [the Blazers] made a run. It was a get-able game, but give them credit. They made some big shots."

HOT: Matthews was 8-for-11 from the field, including 5-for-8 from 3-point range.

GOOD MOVE: When Aldridge got in foul trouble, Portland coach Terry Stotts went to rookie Victor Claver -- a natural small forward -- at power forward. Claver responded with a season-high 10 rebounds to go with four points and two steals in 20 minutes.

BAD MOVE: None for Portland.

NOTABLE: Portland snapped a six-game losing streak against Boston, beating the Celtics for the first time since December 2008. ... Eric Maynor, acquired Thursday in a deal with Oklahoma City, made his Portland debut. The backup point guard scored two points on 1-for-5 shooting and had three assists in 15 minutes ... Jordan Crawford, recently acquired by Boston in a trade with Washington, was held scoreless in 12 minutes off the bench. ... Portland won the rebound battle 47-36.
