Cavaliers-Magic Preview

The Cleveland Cavaliers didn't make any moves at the trade deadline this week, but having a healthy Kyrie Irving gives the team plenty of confidence moving forward.

Somehow, the lowly Orlando Magic have found some positives about their situation.

Cleveland goes for its first road win in this series in three seasons on Saturday night when the Magic return home with three new players - and without J.J. Redick.

The Cavaliers (17-37) obviously have plenty of room for improvement - sitting 12th in the Eastern Conference is proof of that - but Irving, among the NBA leaders with 23.7 points per game, is the star the team has been looking for since LeBron James left for Miami in 2010.

The main knock on Irving has been his durability - he missed 11 games earlier this season with a broken finger after being sidelined for 15 during his rookie of the year campaign in 2011-12 - but when healthy, he's among the top point guards in the NBA.

Fresh off winning the 3-point contest and scoring 15 points in his All-Star debut on Sunday, Irving poured in 20 of his 35 points in the fourth quarter of Wednesday's 105-100 victory over New Orleans.

Cleveland had dropped three straight since ending a 10-game losing streak to the Magic with a 119-108 victory on Feb. 8.

"You can see it coming (from Irving)," coach Byron Scott said after the Cavs finished their 4-3 homestand. "He gets a little bit of a gleam in his eye. He hits one or two shots and just kind of gets going."

Irving will get his second look at the Magic this season. He was injured for a 108-104 loss at Orlando on Nov. 23, but he finished with team highs of 24 points and eight assists on Feb. 8.

Orlando (15-40) has won six straight and 11 of 13 at home against the Cavs, but the team has dropped 27 of 30 following back-to-back road losses to Dallas and Memphis.

A bigger loss may have happened between those two defeats when Redick - the team's top 3-point shooter - was dealt to Milwaukee on Thursday along with center Gustavo Ayon and Ish Smith. Orlando received Beno Udrih, rookie guard Doron Lamb and Tobias Harris in that swap, but they did not play in Friday's 88-82 loss to the Grizzlies.

Neither did Hakim Warrick, who will likely get waived after Orlando acquired him from Charlotte for big man Josh McRoberts.

"(The younger players') focus was unbelievable tonight. ... It was really, really impressive by those guys," Arron Afflalo said. "Once we get some more guys coming in to help us out a little bit, this is the way we need to play moving forward."

Udrih could see plenty of minutes on Saturday if starting point guard Jameer Nelson misses a second straight game with a strained left patellar tendon.

Nelson is averaging 18.5 points - second to Afflalo's 21.0 - with 9.5 assists against Cleveland this season.

Cavs guard Dion Waiters, the league's second-highest rookie scorer with 14.2 points per game, has a team-best 40 in those two matchups. Waiters' 25 points on Nov. 23 led all scorers.

Cleveland's last victory at Orlando was 102-93 on Nov. 11, 2009.

Speights, Irving lead Cavaliers past Magic 118-94

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) Kyrie Irving has proven multiple times this season that he can be an unrelenting scorer when he needs to be.

Against the Magic, the Cleveland Cavaliers' young point guard showed he can also do some damage when he's creating opportunities for his teammates.

Marreese Speights scored 18 points, Alonzo Gee added 17 and the Cavaliers used a big fourth quarter to run past the Magic 118-94 on Saturday night.

Irving chipped in with 12 points, but had a game-high nine assists in just three quarters of work for Cleveland, which has won two straight overall and snapped a six-game losing streak in Orlando.

"Coming out in the second half we knew the things we needed to do, especially on the defensive end," Irving said. "That has to be our identity, first and foremost. Our defense has to lead to our offense and that's what he did."

Arron Afflalo scored 16 points for the Magic in their first home game since a trade deadline deal last week that saw the departure of four players, including sixth man J.J. Redick. Two of their three new additions, Tobias Harris and Beno Udrih, finished in double figures with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Orlando has lost five consecutive games and 28 of its last 31 as it dives deeper into its rebuilding process.

"It's definitely going to take a little time," Magic forward Maurice Harkless said. "I think (the new players will) get it quick, especially since we're all young, so we get to help them. The way they played today, they played pretty well for their first game so it'll all get better."

The Cavaliers scored the first eight points of the final period to push their lead to 15. The Magic got it down to 11 before another 8-0 spurt made it 95-76 with less than 8 minutes to play.

Cleveland maintained its cushion down the stretch, allowing Irving and the rest of the starting five to sit out the entire fourth quarter. Still, the Cavaliers outscored Orlando 39-22 in the period.

Tyler Zeller was also impressive in limited action in the second half, finishing with 16 points and seven rebounds. C.J. Miles also had 16 points and six rebounds coming off the bench.

Coach Byron Scott said afterward that Irving did experience a little soreness in his right knee but was fine. Irving said he tweaked the knee in practice, but doesn't expect to miss any time because of it. The Cavaliers continue their trip Sunday in Miami.

"Our bench guys did a heck of a job in the fourth quarter of not only maintaining but increasing the lead, so we didn't have to bring those guys back in," Scott said. "So they get some rest and get ready for a tough one in Miami."

The Magic played without point guard Jameer Nelson, who missed his second straight game with a left patella contusion.

Without trade acquisitions Harris, Udrih and Doron Lamb, the Magic hung tough in a close loss to Memphis on Friday, but struggled at times against Cleveland without a true point guard opposite Irving.

Even with all three playing Saturday, the Cavaliers were clearly the more comfortable team in the early going and took advantage of it as they built a 10-point lead.

Irving was especially active, both scoring and distributing. At one point early in the first quarter he received an outlet pass on a fast break and casually delivered a pass off the backboard to Gee, who dunked it easily.

It set a tone, and kept Orlando scrambling throughout the night.

When they did get into the game, the Magic's new arrivals brought in instant energy, helping to briefly stunt Cleveland's early momentum.

It was tied at the half, thanks to balanced scoring on both sides. Orlando had eight players with at least six points in the opening 24 minutes, while Gee was the only player on either team to reach double figures in the half, scoring 10 points.

Magic coach Jacque Vaughn said his message will remain consistent during this latest transitional period.

"I think you still hold guys accountable," he said. "There is no mistake in the accountability ... It doesn't guarantee you wins and losses, but we're trying to play the best that we can and that's what you want to do. Each time you step on the floor you do your job. You play the best you can."

If the Cavaliers have any shot of ending the season with momentum, though, it must happen now Irving said.

"We're just trying to win as many games as possible," Irving said. "In order to do that, we just have to find consistency on this team and it starts with this road trip ... It is a challenge for us as a team and we are looking forward to it."

Notes: Cleveland F Omri Casspi wasn't with the team after being taken to an Orlando hospital on Saturday afternoon complaining of acute stomach pain. G Daniel Gibson was also inactive because of what the team said were personal reasons. ... The Magic are now 5-21 this season when their opponent scores at least 100 points.

THE FACTS: The Cleveland Cavaliers scored 39 points in the fourth quarter with all of their starters resting and beat the Orlando Magic 118-94 Saturday night.

Marreese Speights scored 14 of his game-high 18 points in the second half and led seven Cavaliers (18-37) in double figures. Tyler Zeller had 12 of his 16 points in the third quarter before taking a seat with the rest of the Cleveland regulars.

Kyrie Irving, playing on a sore right knee, put up 12 points and nine assists.

Beno Udrih, Tobias Harris and Doron Lamb, the players acquired from Milwaukee in a six-player trade on Thursday, came off the Magic (15-41) bench with a combined 24 points and 10 rebounds.

Arron Afflalo scored 16 points for the Magic, who have lost five straight and 17 of 18.

THE STAT: Not a single one of the Magic's 11 active players was on the roster last season.

TURNING POINT: The Cavs had only a seven-point lead when Tristan Thompson missed two free throws with 6:45 left in the third quarter. However, Zeller rebounded the second miss, scored on a layup, and Cleveland ran off to a comfortable lead.

QUOTABLE II: "They picked up their defensive intensity, and we couldn't match them."

HOT: The Cavaliers' bench shot 74 percent (14-for-19) in the fourth quarter and rolled up 39 points.

NOT: In their 24 seasons in the NBA, the Magic have lost by 24 points or more at home 18 times. Six of those losses have come within the last 12 months.

GOOD MOVE: With road games coming up at Miami on Sunday and at Chicago on Tuesday, all of the Cavs' starters watched the fourth quarter from the bench.

BAD MOVE: Udrih played almost 27 minutes and Harris almost 24 minutes in their debuts, an indication of what condition the Magic are in.

IN THE ARENA: According to an announcement during a timeout, the Magic were selling J.J. Redick merchandise at 30 percent off. Redick was traded Thursday to the Bucks.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Irving's sore knee could be a concern, although the Cavs downplayed it.

ROOKIE WATCH: Eight of the 10 starters were rookies or second-year players . . . After taking a tongue-lashing from an assistant coach at halftime, Zeller dominated the third quarter . . . Magic rookies Harkless and Kyle O'Quinn had bursts in the first half, then disappeared. Harkless finished with a plus/minus of minus-38.

NOTABLE: Cavs forward Omri Casspi was taken to Orlando Regional Medical center before the game to be evaluated for acute abdominal pain . . . Harris took jersey number 12, formerly worn by Dwight Howard.
