Kings-Hawks Preview

After months of trade speculation, the Atlanta Hawks ultimately chose to hang on to Josh Smith.

With their leading scorer still in uniform, the Hawks try for a 10th consecutive victory over the Sacramento Kings on Friday night at Philips Arena.

While many expected the Hawks (29-23) to move Smith before Thursday's deadline, general manager Danny Ferry kept him after reportedly pulling out of a last-second deal that would have sent him to Milwaukee. The versatile Smith, who's averaging 17.2 points and 8.6 rebounds, will become an unrestricted free agent after the season.

"We weighed the positives and negatives of each of our opportunities and at the end of the day we felt like the best decision was to stand pat based off some of the things we were looking at," Ferry said.

"We were in an unusual situation where Josh's contract, our cap space and flexibility going forward, having a good team right now, there were a lot of factors that played into this. I think the main factor is we value Josh. I think he's been important to our group this year and we can finish the year strong and hopefully we play well and we're a solid playoff team."

Sitting in sixth place in the Eastern Conference, the Hawks worked out two separate trades Thursday, sending Anthony Morrow to Dallas for swingman Dahntay Jones and acquiring center Jeremy Tyler from Golden State for cash and future draft considerations.

It's unclear if either player will be available against the Kings (19-36), who also were busy before the deadline. Sacramento acquired forward Patrick Patterson, center Cole Aldrich and point guard Toney Douglas from Houston in exchange for Thomas Robinson, Francisco Garcia and Tyler Honeycutt.

"We are excited about the addition of Patrick, Toney and Cole," president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie told the team's official website. "They will add skill and depth along with the potential for a different look to our roster."

Sacramento could certainly benefit from changing things up versus Atlanta, which has averaged 110.4 points during its nine-game run in this series. The Hawks cruised to a 112-96 road win Nov. 16 behind 22 points from Kyle Korver and Al Horford's 20 and 10 rebounds. Smith, meanwhile, scored 19 to go along with eight boards.

Smith entered the All-Star break averaging 26.3 points over a three-game stretch before scoring 10 on 5-of-13 shooting Wednesday in a 103-90 loss to Miami. He added nine rebounds and a season-high nine assists, but the Hawks were outscored 40-17 and committed six turnovers over the final 12 minutes.

"They just came out on fire (in the fourth)," said Horford, who finished with 27 points. "They were hitting some shots and we turned the ball over, didn't take good shots, and you can't do that against a good team like that."

Horford, who's posted three consecutive 20-point games for the first time in his career, is shooting 73.3 percent over that stretch.

The Kings don't carry much momentum into their five-game road trip after suffering a third consecutive loss and 11th in 14 games Tuesday, 108-102 to San Antonio. Isaiah Thomas had 22 points and Tyreke Evans scored 20, but Sacramento shot just 37.8 percent.

"When you don't make shots it makes everything else look bad," said Thomas, averaging 18.6 points and shooting 49.1 percent over the last five games.

"We just got to focus in and try to win every game one at a time. It's going to be a tough road trip, but hopefully we can take care of business."

Hawks pull away late, beat Kings 122-108

ATLANTA (AP) When Josh Smith took the challenge of defending DeMarcus Cousins, the Atlanta Hawks finally took control against the Sacramento Kings.

Smith, who remained in Atlanta after being discussed in talks leading up to Thursday's trade deadline, came through with his defense one day later.

Al Horford led Atlanta's balanced scoring with 24 points and the Hawks overcame a slow start to beat Sacramento 122-108 on Friday night.

Jeff Teague had 20 points and 12 assists, Smith added 18 points and DeShawn Stevenson had 17 for Atlanta, which had six players in double figures.

Smith also had six rebounds and four assists, but coach Larry Drew talked the most about the decision made by the 6-foot-9 power forward to defend the 6-foot-11, 270-pound Cousins, the Kings' high-scoring center.

"Josh signaled he did not want any help down there," Drew said.

"Josh did a phenomenal job on him and that's what Josh has been since he's been here. Josh is the type of guy, he will take the challenge against a guy like that."

Teague said Smith "can guard anybody, one through five, and that's what makes him so special."

Smith said Thursday he didn't sleep well Wednesday night as the trade deadline neared. He said he "slept too good, actually" on Thursday night and had the energy to hold Cousins, who had 26 points and 13 rebounds, to only four points in the final quarter.

"I just wanted to show him different looks," Smith said. "Whenever you show a guy different looks, it kind of wears him down. I just wanted to be able to use my quickness on him."

Smith will be an unrestricted free agent after the season.

"I'm glad I'm here," Smith said. "We've got to think about moving forward and keep pushing for better playoff position."

Isaiah Thomas scored 30 points with nine assists to lead the Kings, who have lost four straight and eight of 10.

Tyreke Evans chipped in 15 points but no other Sacramento player scored in double figures.

Sacramento led by 13 in the opening period. The Kings were up 63-61 at halftime but couldn't keep pace in the second half as their road struggles continued. The Kings have lost seven straight on the road and are 5-24 away from Sacramento.

"This is an offensive-minded team," Cousins said. "We're struggling in all aspects of the game. I do believe our offense carries our defense.

"We went away from what worked. We have a tendency to do that every game. I mean, if you haven't learned yet, you ain't trying to learn."

After 14 lead changes, the Hawks took the lead for good on Teague's 3-pointer with 2:20 remaining in the third quarter.

Atlanta pushed its lead to double figures for the first time at 105-94 on Stevenson's fifth 3-pointer midway through the final period.

Kings coach Keith Smart said the Hawks' 33-19 advantage in fast-break points was evidence the Sacramento players weren't hustling on defense.

"That's effort and energy," Smart said. "The effort defensively wasn't there."

For one half, the Kings' hot shooting was enough.

Led by Thomas, who had 12 points in the first quarter, the Kings made 10 of their first 14 shots from the field and took their biggest lead at 31-18.

"You're feeling pretty good, you feel like you're going to win the game with your offense," Smart said.

The Hawks took control by outscoring the Kings 32-25 in the third quarter.

Sacramento's John Salmons said the Kings, who "focus too much on offense," should stop using youth as an excuse.

"The whole league's young at this point," Salmons said. "The young thing's not really an excuse anymore. It's time to grow up, be a team."

The Kings had only 10 players as they awaited the arrival of the three they acquired from Houston on Thursday: forward Patrick Patterson, center Cole Aldrich and point guard Toney Douglas. Sacramento gave up forwards Thomas Robinson, Francisco Garcia and Tyler Honeycutt in the deal.

The Kings expect the three newcomers to join the team Saturday in New Orleans for Sacramento's next game on Sunday.

Atlanta's Dahntay Jones, acquired from Dallas for Anthony Morrow on Thursday, was in uniform and played the final 2 minutes. Center Jeremy Tyler, purchased from Golden State at the trade deadline, was with the team but was not active.

Kyle Korver and Devin Harris each had 10 points for the Hawks.

Sacramento's Jason Thompson had nine points and 10 rebounds.

Smith's buzzer-beating 3 to end the first half was disallowed following a long review. Officials said the clock, which was set at 0.8 seconds, started late.

NOTES: The Kings have lost 10 straight against Atlanta since their last win in the series on Feb. 20, 2008. ... The Hawks wore red-and-black uniforms from the 1990s as they recognized their all-1990s team selected by fans. Kevin Willis, Dikembe Mutombo, Steve Smith and Dominique Wilkins were honored at halftime. Mookie Blaylock, the fifth member of the all-decade team, was not present. ... The Kings' last road win was Jan. 28 at Washington. ... Stevenson's five 3-pointers matched his season high.

THE FACTS: The Atlanta Hawks may have stopped playing defense for a while, but they resumed scoring Friday night and Al Horford remained red hot while scoring 24 points in a 122-108 win over the visiting Sacramento Kings. Jeff Teague added 20 points and 12 assists for Atlanta (29-23).

Atlanta has beaten Sacramento 10 straight times. The Kings last beat the Hawks five years ago, on Feb. 20, 2008.

Spared at the trade deadline after considerable spectulation that he would be moved, Josh Smith scored 18 points for the Hawks. DeShawn Stevenson pitched in a season-high 17 points while tying his season high with five 3-pointers made.

The Hawks trailed by 13 in the first quarter and 63-60 at halftime, yet won this one going away by scoring 97 points over the final three quarters. The Kings ran out of gas late in the third quarter, and shot 7-for-25 in the fourth period as Atlanta's defensive adjustments paid off.

Isaiah Thomas scored 30 points (with nine assists) to pace Sacramento, and DeMarcus Cousins had 26 points and 13 rebounds as the Kings lost their fourth straight game.

QUOTABLE: "I think we got seduced into playing their style. They were pushing the ball . . . once we made some adjustments in the second half, we were better."

THE STAT: Six. The Hawks had just six turnovers, and the Kings scored a mere three points off of them. Atlanta scored 24 points off 16 Sacramento miscues.

TURNING POINT: The third quarter went back and forth before the Hawks closed the period with a 10-3 run to lead 93-88.

QUOTABLE II: "Sometimes, when you're playing well offensively, you forget the other side of the ball . . . we had every opportunity to win this game if we even gave half of a defensive effort. Age is not the issue anymore . . . it's time for us to grow up and be a team."

GOOD MOVE: Hawks coach Larry Drew started a big lineup with Zaza Pachulia at center, Horford at power forward, Smith at small forward, Stevenson at shooting guard and Teague at the point. In the second half, Drew opened with Horford at center, Smith at power, and Kyle Korver, Stevenson and Teague. He eventually had Smith defend Cousins. Atlanta's offense did not suffer, and the defense was much improved.

QUOTABLE III: "Defensively, in the first half we had no presence . . . I really wanted to go a little bit smaller so that we could get a little bit more speed. . . . It wasn't until we put Josh Smith on [Cousins] that he slowed down. Josh is the type of guy who will take the challenge against guys like that. As a coaching staff, we recognize what he brings to the table."

HOT: Horford has scored at least 20 points in four straight games for the first time in his career. After shooting 11-for-14 Friday, he's put together a quartet of games shooting 74.6 percent (44-for-59) while averaging 24.5 points . . . Stevenson was 5-for-6 from distance Friday, and in the past two games has shot 8-for-11 on 3-pointers.. . Cousins had 12 points and five rebounds in the third quarter . . . Atlanta starters shot a combined 11-for-13 in the third period, when Atlanta took the lead for good.

NOT: Rarely used big man Johan Petro missed all five of his shots for Atlanta. He's missed eight straight shots in his last two games . . . Sacramento starters shot a combined 5-for-18 in the final period.

NOTABLE: The Hawks honored their "Team of the '90s," at halftime. With the present-day team wearing the jerseys worn by Atlanta from 1995-'99, small forward Dominique Wilkins was the most obvious choice as determined by a fan vote. He was joined by center Dikembe Mutombo, power forward Kevin Willis, point guard Mookie Blaylock, and shooting guard Steve Smith. . . Friday's game was the beginning of a five-game road trip for the Kings. Atlanta's game Saturday night will kick off a six-game road trip for the Hawks. . . Atlanta's Dahntay Jones was the only one of five combined players acquired by trade Wednesday by the two teams to play Friday. The former Mavericks' player played 2:27 late. The Kings hope to integrate Patrick Patterson as soon as Sunday in New Orleans. Cole Aldrich and Toney Douglas may debut on Sacramento's road trip. For the Hawks, newcomer Jeremy Tyler was inactive.
