Thunder-Rockets Preview

A few days after getting back into the same uniform as Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook, James Harden will see them on the court again but as part of the opposing team.

The first two times that happened went very badly for his Houston Rockets.

After shooting poorly against his former team as Houston was blown out in both matchups, Harden has a chance to spoil the Oklahoma City Thunder's return from the All-Star break and help hand them a season-high third straight loss.

Harden, in his first season with the Rockets after spending the past three with the Thunder, played in his first All-Star game Sunday and was among the unofficial hosts for the weekend in Houston. After coaching the winning West team in the All-Star celebrity game Friday night, Harden had 15 points in the main event Sunday in a 143-138 victory over the East.

Durant scored a game-high 30 and Westbrook added 14 as they played on the same team with Harden for the first time since losing Game 5 of last year's NBA finals to Miami.

"Playing with (Harden) today made me miss him a little bit," Durant told the NBA's official website. "I'm happy he was an All-Star, especially in the city he plays in. It was a lot of fun. I didn't want it to be over."

For Harden, the feeling was mutual.

"I miss those guys as well," he said. "Just being with them every day, when you leave somewhere, you definitely are going to miss them. This weekend was good for us just to see each other and catch up on good times."

The times haven't been so good for Harden when his new team has played his old one. His return to Oklahoma City was a 120-98 loss Nov. 28 as he shot 3 for 16 and had 17 points. Harden scored 25 in the rematch but was 6 of 17 from the field in a 124-94 home loss Dec. 29.

The Thunder shot a combined 50.8 percent in those games while limiting the Rockets to 40.6.

Harden played very well in his final four games before All-Star weekend, averaging 32.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 6.8 assists before injuries kept him out of a 106-96 loss to the Clippers last Wednesday.

Houston (29-26) alternated wins and losses in its last six games before the break with poor defense remaining a major issue. All six of those opponents scored more than 100 points as the Rockets allowed an average of 109.3.

Defense also was a big problem for Oklahoma City (39-14) in its final two games before the break, losing 109-94 at Utah last Tuesday and 110-100 to Miami on Thursday. The Thunder are 30-2 when holding the opposition under 100 points.

Durant totaled 73 points in those two games while Westbrook had 48, but the duo combined for 22 turnovers.

Durant is coming off his third straight All-Star appearance with at least 30 points.

"I just go out there and have fun, use this experience a little bit and try to bring it to my team," he said. "Just how fun the game is supposed to be every single night and how blessed we are to be playing on this stage. I'm looking forward to the second half, hopefully it's a good one."

Houston has won four straight and 11 of 14 at home. The only visiting team to win there by more than 10 points this season was Oklahoma City.

Harden scores 46, Rockets rally past Thunder

HOUSTON (AP) James Harden finally beat his former team on Wednesday night.

It took the best game of his career to get it done.

Harden scored a career-high 46 points and Jeremy Lin added 29 as the Houston Rockets mounted a furious fourth-quarter comeback for a 122-119 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder.

"I just told the guys on the court that we've got to do whatever it takes, we've got to get some stops together and make some shots," Harden said. "It's not going to be easy, they're a very good team. But we got some stops at the right time and guys made good shots."

Houston was down by 14 points with about seven minutes left. The Rockets used a 21-4 run to erase the deficit and take a 114-111 lead with 1:46 remaining. Harden stepped back under heavy pressure from Serge Ibaka to sink a 3 to tie it, before Lin connected on one seconds later to give the Rockets their first lead of the second half.

Harden, traded from Oklahoma City to Houston before the season, made a bucket before Ibaka made two free throws. Then came another 3 by Lin to extend the lead to 119-113.

A 3-pointer by Russell Westbrook got Oklahoma City within three points, but Lin made one of two free throws to secure the win.

It was Houston's first win this season over the Thunder, who won both previous meetings, including a 30-point win in the last matchup. The loss extended Oklahoma City's skid to three games.

"He's a phenomenal offensive force," Houston coach Kevin McHale said of Harden. "He can drive it. He's got the ability to shoot it ... to beat you off the bounce. I think he's almost unguardable off the catch."

Kevin Durant summed up the fourth quarter succinctly.

"They got hot, we got cold," Durant said. "They played defense, we didn't."

Thabo Sefolosha led the Thunder with 28 points and had six 3-pointers, both career highs. His previous career high was 22, which he reached twice, most recently in 2008.

Westbrook also scored 28 points and added 10 rebounds and eight assists. Kevin Durant had 16 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists for his second career triple-double.

Harden had struggled in the two previous games against his former team. He averaged 21 points in those games, but went only 9 for 33 from the field and made just four 3-pointers.

On Wednesday, Harden was 11 of 12 from the free throw line, made a career-best seven 3-pointers, had eight rebounds and six assists.

"He hit some tough shots," Durant said. "That's what great players do. He rode them to victory. He passed the ball well, he shot the ball well."

Thunder coach Scott Brooks didn't want to make too much out of Harden beating his former team.

"He wanted to win the game, just like we wanted to beat him and their team," Brooks said. "It was about us against them, not James against us or us against James."

Lin grabbed a steal from Westbrook and dished to Harden, who made a shot from beyond halfcourt at the third-quarter buzzer to cut Oklahoma City's lead to 92-87 entering the fourth.

The Thunder then extended the lead to 107-93 after Kevin Martin and Sefolosha hit back-to-back 3-pointers before Houston rallied.

Lin raved about Harden's performance.

"If he is not up for MVP consideration, I don't know what else he needs to do," Lin said. "He made every single big play down the stretch, and even the shots that I was able to have, they were created because of him."

Oklahoma City was up by seven points midway through the third quarter when Chandler Parsons scored six points in less than a minute to get Houston within 73-72. He made a pair of free throws before adding consecutive dunks. On the first one, Carlos Delfino stole the ball from Durant and passed to Parsons for the dunk. Lin stepped in front of a pass from Ibaka a few seconds later and found Parsons alone for the two-handed slam.

Oklahoma City was up by eight points with about 1 1/2 minutes left in the first half when Lin was given a technical for arguing a call. Durant made the free throw on the technical to put Oklahoma City's lead at 60-51.

Harden took over after that, scoring all of Houston's points in a 6-2 run to end the quarter and cut the lead to 62-57 at halftime.

Harden made four 3-pointers early to help Houston build a 34-22 lead in the first quarter. Oklahoma City scored seven straight points after that, before Harden added a pair of free throws to lead the Rockets up 36-29 at the end of the first quarter.

"I hadn't made four 3s all season in one game," Harden said. "I took some extra shots last night, that kind of helped me out with my confidence a little bit, just to get it going early - not trying to force it, but get my teammates involved and everything else was going to open up."

Parsons was helped off the court and into the locker room after twisting his right ankle near the end of the third quarter.

He returned with about 6 1/2 minutes left in the game.

NOTES: The Rockets reached agreements on two trades that will send Patrick Patterson, Cole Aldrich and Toney Douglas to Sacramento and Marcus Morris to Phoenix, a person familiar with the situation said Wednesday. The Rockets will receive Thomas Robinson, the No. 5 pick in last year's draft, Francisco Garcia and Tyler Honeycutt from the Kings, according to the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been announced and was still pending league approval. ... Thunder center Kendrick Perkins missed Wednesday's game with a sprained right knee. ... Wednesday was Houston's ninth double-digit comeback win this season.

Notebook: Rockets 122, Thunder 119

THE FACTS: After saying goodbye to a few of their teammates following a pair of trades, what remained of the Houston Rockets started a new chapter of their season with an improbable comeback victory over the defending Western Conference champions.

James Harden scored 16 of his career-high 46 points in the fourth quarter, and Jeremy Lin finished with 29 points, eight assists and six rebounds as the Rockets overcame a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit to knock off the Oklahoma City Thunder 122-119 on Wednesday at Toyota Center. Chandler Parsons added 17 points and six boards for Houston (30-26), which has won five of its last eight games overall and five consecutive home games.

Kevin Durant (16 points, 12 rebounds, 11 assists) posted his second career triple-double, and Russell Westbrook (28 points, 10 boards, eight assists) nearly recorded one of his own to lead the Thunder (39-15), but the duo combined for 12 of Oklahoma City's 22 turnovers. Thabo Sefolosha exploded for a career-high 28 points on 11-for-16 shooting, but it was not enough to prevent the Thunder from suffering its first three-game regular-season losing streak since April 2-6, 2012.

Less than 30 minutes before tip-off, news broke that the Rockets traded Cole Aldrich, Toney Douglas and Patrick Patterson to the Sacramento Kings for rookie Thomas Robinson, Tyler Honeycutt, Francisco Garcia and a future second-round draft pick. Houston also shipped Marcus Morris to the Phoenix Suns for a future second-round pick Wednesday evening. The Rockets did not know about the deals until approximately 20 minutes before the game began, but it did not keep them from completing the task at hand.

QUOTABLE: "It was definitely the weirdest game I've ever played in. It was just tough. It was hard to focus. It was hard to block out four friends leaving. That's a huge win for us, and I thought we really showed something tonight, fighting through that, staying focused and playing a really good team."

THE STAT: Oklahoma City failed to lock down Lin and Harden down the stretch, as the Rockets' starting backcourt combined to either score or assist on all 27 of Houston's points during the final seven minutes of regulation.

TURNING POINT: After Sefolosha nailed a 3-pointer with 7:13 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Rockets held the Thunder without a field goal until the final half-minute of regulation. Oklahoma City's offensive struggles shifted to the defense end, because its barrage of bricks allowed Harden and Lin to stretch the floor and create in transition. Houston scored on 11 of 15 possessions during the Thunder's field-goal drought as it put together a 26-6 run that transformed a 107-93 deficit into a 119-113 lead.

HOT: The Thunder's defensive stopper, Sefolosha, became Oklahoma City's top source of scoring in the third quarter as he poured in 14 points on 6-for-7 (85.7 percent) shooting. Half of those points came during a key 14-6 spurt in which the Thunder extended a 73-72 advantage to 87-78.

NOT: The All-Star break could not help the Rockets' Carlos Delfino snap out of his perimeter shooting slump. Including Wednesday's 3-for-10 effort, the eighth-year wing has connected on only 29.4 percent (10-for-34) of his 3-point attempts over the last five contests.

GOOD MOVE: The Rockets hounded Durant with several defenders and never allowed him to gain a rhythm, which benefitted them greatly when Durant attempted to take over the game in the closing minutes. The 6-foot-9 forward missed his final five shot attempts and committed turnovers on back-to-back possessions, igniting Houston's powerful transition offense.

BAD MOVE: The Thunder has been too reliant upon its offense to carry it to victory when playing away from home lately, allowing at least 100 points in seven of its last 10 road games. Oklahoma City's lackadaisical defensive performances in recent road outings are a major reason why it has posted a mediocre 8-7 record over its last 15 contests. The Thunder, which is 30-2 this season when limiting opponents to less than 100 points, must use the final two months of the regular season to regain its focus defensively in all settings.

QUOTABLE III: "We're not going to win when we give up three quarters of 30-plus points. ... As a team we've given up too many points. ... That's not us. That's not what we pride ourselves on. We have to regroup and figure it out defensively. It hasn't been on our level on the road for a while now, but we have to change that."

NOTABLE: Thunder center Kendrick Perkins missed Wednesday's game with a right knee sprain he suffered during Tuesday's practice. ... Rockets forward Chandler Parsons left the game during the third quarter after suffering a sprained right ankle, but he returned in the fourth period and played the final 6:27. ... Oklahoma City lost for only the second time this season (18-2) when at least five players score in double figures and just the third time (15-3) when its bench outscores its opponents' reserves. ... Lin has shot 48.3 percent (56-for-116) from 3-point range over his last 11 games. ... Houston improved to 12-4 this season when it commits fewer turnovers than its opponent. ... The Rockets are 5-2 in games decided by four points or less.
