Nets-Bucks Preview

Joe Johnson and the Brooklyn Nets would like to make things a bit easier on themselves this time against the Milwaukee Bucks.

A night after ending a long losing streak to the Bucks on some late heroics from Johnson, the Nets will try to win in Milwaukee for the first time in almost four years Wednesday night.

Brooklyn (32-22) halted a 13-game slide against Milwaukee when Johnson nailed a buzzer-beating jumper in overtime to clinch a 113-11 win in the opener of this home-and-home set Tuesday. He forced the extra session with a tying 3-pointer in the closing seconds of regulation.

"It's an unbelievable feeling," said Johnson, who finished with 24 points. "Regardless of the situation, whether it's regular season or playoffs, it's always a great feeling. And, just to see everybody kind of explode with excitement is probably the best feeling."

Johnson is averaging 22.3 points while hitting 9 of 17 from beyond the arc during the Nets' three-game winning streak, but he's totaled 24 points while shooting 9 of 29 overall in his last two visits to the Bradley Center. He had 13 as Brooklyn shot just 38.6 percent in a 108-93 loss there Dec. 26 with Deron Williams sidelined.

Brooklyn has dropped six straight games in Milwaukee since a win March 3, 2009, but the team may not care about the past after coach P.J. Carlesimo tried to use the overall slide as motivation Tuesday.

"(Carlesimo) mentioned the streak before the game, but I don't think anybody took that out there with that on their mind," forward Gerald Wallace said. "It wasn't anything about their streak. It was about us as team. It shows the fight we have."

Ending the skid in Milwaukee could also draw the Nets closer in the division chase since they're two games back of first-place New York, which visits Indiana.

The Bucks (26-26) have dropped seven of nine and are looking for an improved start after trailing Brooklyn 31-24 at the end of the first quarter. They fell behind by double digits after 12 minutes in two of their last three games before the break.

"We've got to turn it on right from the very beginning," coach Jim Boylan said. "We're not Oklahoma City or Miami or something like that. We've got to play hard for 48 minutes."

Brandon Jennings had 34 points Tuesday, 31 of which came after the first quarter. The point guard has been very productive against the Nets, averaging 29.8 points while sinking 19 of 35 from 3-point range over his last five meetings.

He had 25 against them in December while Monta Ellis scored 20 with six steals. Ellis came just shy of a triple-double Tuesday, finishing with 18 points, eight assists and eight rebounds.

Jennings and Ellis will have to contend with Brooklyn's backcourt of Johnson and Williams, the latter of whom had 19 points and nine assists Tuesday after sitting out the previous two games with inflammation in his ankles.

Brook Lopez had 19 points on 6 of 17 shooting Tuesday, but has averaged 24.0 points over his last three road matchups with the Bucks.

Though Milwaukee got big performances from Jennings, Ellis and Ersan Ilyasova (21 points) on Tuesday, it needs more from its bench. The Bucks' reserves accounted for 15 points against the Nets after having 12 last Wednesday against the 76ers - the unit's two lowest-scoring games of the season.

Nets hang on to beat the Bucks 97-94

MILWAUKEE (AP) Five points separated the Nets and the Bucks in their home-and-home set, and Brooklyn came away with two straight last-second victories.

Deron Williams scored 23 points and the Nets escaped with a 97-94 victory on Wednesday night after Milwaukee's Monta Ellis missed a chance to tie the game with three foul shots in the final seconds.

"We did a good job of closing the game until the very end," Nets interim coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "We made it interesting. We got ourselves an 11-point lead and then did a poor job closing that. It's hard to keep coming back, coming back, coming back, but we did it."

Williams made two free throws and a 3-pointer that gave the Nets their biggest lead at 94-83 with 1:50 left to play. But Milwaukee ran off an 11-2 run down the stretch and pulled to 96-94 with 6.9 seconds left on two layup by Brandon Jennings.

Gerald Wallace inbounded to Williams, but Jennings was draped over the point guard's right side. The contact shook the ball loose and it appeared to hit Williams' foot before rolling out of bounds. After review, the Nets had possession. Williams was fouled and made one of two free throws to make it 97-94 with 3.4 seconds left.

Williams then fouled Ellis on a hurried 3.

"He turned and lost his footing and kind of flopped," Williams said. "If I pushed him, I definitely didn't push enough for him to go flying out of bounds like that. It worked out in the end. Let's say I planned it. I knew he was going to miss the free throws."

Ellis missed the first two shots, and intentionally missed the third.

"Every game isn't going to be pretty," Williams said. "You are going to have these grind it out games. We got down and we are able to fight back and keep our composure and get a win."

Jennings scored 31 points and had 11 assists, Ersan Ilyasova had 12 rebounds and Larry Sanders had 12 points, 13 rebounds and five blocked shots for Milwaukee.

It was the Nets' fourth consecutive win, all against teams currently holding a playoff spot. With the Knicks losing to Indiana 125-91, the Nets pulled to within one game of first-place New York in the Atlantic Division.

Sanders returned to the Bucks' starting lineup Tuesday after missing four games with a lower back contusion.

"Last night, we didn't have the lead. We had to fight back," Sanders said of the Nets' victory Tuesday night, when Joe Johnson hit a jumper just before time expired to win it in Brooklyn. Johnson also forced the extra session with a tying 3-pointer as regulation wound down.

"Tonight, I think fatigue caught up to us a little bit, but I'm not going to blame it on that," Sanders said.

C.J. Watson had 17 off the bench for Brooklyn. Andray Blatche scored 12 points and had 12 rebounds for the Nets

Williams, who had 19 points and nine assists Tuesday after sitting out the previous two games with inflammation in his ankles, played 33 minutes. He had eight assist and one steal.

The Nets took advantage of the Bucks' inability to hit shots in the fourth quarter with a 19-5 run.

Williams' 3 at 1:50 gave Brooklyn its biggest lead at 94-83 lead. The Bucks held the Nets scoreless for the next 1:35.

The Nets used a 16-1 run spanning the third and fourth quarters and took the lead 77-76 on Blatche's layup with 10:11 left to play and MarShon Brooks made two free throws to push the lead to 79-76.

Ellis that stopped a Bucks' scoring drought that lasted a little less than seven minutes. He made one of two free throws with 8:11 to go, but Johnson hit a jumper to put Brooklyn up by four.

The Nets trailed 54-42 at the half, but used a 7-0 run in the third quarter to pull to 66-61 with 4:25 left. Williams made a 3 and Watson a layup before Wallace's dunk off a miss by Jennings, who was nine of 10 until Brook Lopez blocked his shot.

The Bucks were 21 of 34 (61.8 percent) the first half while the Nets struggled and made 15 of 46 shots (32.6 percent).

Jennings had 18 points before the break, making all seven of his shots, and seven assists. Ersan Ilyasova had 10 points and seven of Milwaukee's 23 rebounds.

NOTES: Williams said that he would be getting cortisone shots Thursday in his ailing ankles. ... Sanders extended his NBA lead to 19 games with four or more blocks in a game. ... Before the tip-off, there was a moment of silence in remembrance of the owner of the Los Angeles Lakers, Jerry Buss, who died Monday. ... THE FACTS: Deron Williams scored 23 points, and the Brooklyn defense held Milwaukee to just seven points over a span of just under 12 minutes over the third and fourth quarters, as the Nets topped the Bucks, 97-94, Wednesday night at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.

The Nets (33-22) swept a two-night, home-and-away set after losing their previous 13 games to Milwaukee (26-27).

Brooklyn went on a 31-8 run from late in the third quarter until the final two minutes of the fourth quarter to take a 94-83 lead, then held off a furious rally in the final 90 seconds. With a chance to tie, Monta Ellis missed the first two of three free throws with 2.4 seconds left. Ellis intentionally missed the third, but the Bucks could not corral the rebound.

Brandon Jennings led the Bucks with 31 points and 11 assists, but he went just 3-for-9 after making his first nine shots. C.J. Watson added 17 for the Nets, including a huge driving basket with 15.5 seconds left to slow Milwaukee's closing rush.

QUOTABLE: "It was a lot better than in the first half. It took us a while to get going and get some stops. I think a lot of it was fueled because our offense was so bad in the first half that it made our defense struggle. But we did a lot better job of getting into them and really getting back and stopping their easy baskets."

THE STAT: The Bucks went just 10 for 20 from the free throw line in the second half, including Ellis' fatal misses at the end.

TURNING POINT: Ekpe Udoh's jumper gave the Bucks a 74-63 lead with 1:41 left in the third period, and a free throw by Mike Dunleavy made it 75-63 18 seconds later. But after Udoh's jumper, the Bucks would go 2-for-18 from the field over the next 11:55 before a Larry Sanders dunk started a 9-0 Milwaukee run with 1:46 left.

QUOTABLE II: "We were just hanging on by our fingernails in the first half, and the bench came in and gave us a great lift in the first half and got us back in the game. I thought in both halves, but clearly in the second half, all of them -- C.J. and Andray (Blatche) were unbelievable, and 'Hump' (Kris Humphries) gave us very good minutes, Marshon (Brooks) gave us very good minutes and Boges (Keith Bogans)."

HOT: Watson made 7 of 11 shots and 3-of-4 from behind the arc, but no shot was bigger than his driving basket with 15.5 seconds left that gave the Nets a 96-92 lead.

NOT: A 79.5 percent free throw shooter entering the game, Ellis made just 4-of-9, including missing all three -- the last intentionally -- with 2.4 seconds left when he could have tied the game.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Jennings' 31 points and 11 assists give him 65 points and 18 assists in the last two nights.

INSIDE THE ARENA: LeRoy Butler, a safety for the Green Bay Packers teams of the 1990s that won Super Bowl XXXI was in the house, as was Kevin Zeitler, the right guard for the Cincinnati Bengals, who played at the University of Wisconsin and is from just outside of Milwaukee.

GOOD MOVE: On a night where Joe Johnson struggled to 3-of-14 shooting, Carlesimo gave Watson just under 29 minutes of playing time.

NOTABLE: Sanders finished with 12 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks in his second game back after missing the last four games before the All-Star break. ... Ersan Ilyasova tallied 12 points and 12 rebounds to give Milwaukee three players with double-doubles. ... Blatche had 12 and 12 for the Nets. ... The Nets have won four straight, while the Bucks have now lost 7-of-8 and 8-of-10. ... There were only two lead changes in the game -- the first when Milwaukee took a 6-4 lead with 9:00 left in the first quarter, and the last when Brooklyn took a 77-76 lead with 10:10 left in the game.
