The Toronto Raptors have made a nice push since Rudy Gay arrived late last month.

They'll need that to continue in the second half if they're going to have any shot of making the postseason for the first time in five seasons.

Back from the All-Star break, the Raptors will try to win three straight on the road for the first time in five seasons on Tuesday night when they face the improving Washington Wizards for the first time in 2012-13.

Since he was acquired from Memphis on Jan. 30 in a three-team deal, Gay is averaging 20.7 points and has hit two game-winning shots to help the Raptors (21-32) win five of seven. Toronto will likely need Gay to keep producing at that level if it's going to improve from the 10th spot in the East - the team is six back of eighth-place Milwaukee. However, a 92-88 road win over the Atlantic Division-leading New York Knicks on Wednesday before the break has to give the Raptors confidence that they can compete without the star forward at his best.

Gay missed 17 of 21 shots and scored just 11 points, but reserve Alan Anderson hit a career-best six 3-pointers with 26 points, while DeMar DeRozan chipped in with 20.

"It feels good, the fact that my teammate Double-A stepped up. And DeMar does what DeMar does," Gay said. "But on a night where I couldn't throw a fish in the water, it feels good to still get a win."

The Raptors begin the second half tied with the Pacific Division-leading Los Angeles Clippers for the second-longest current winning streak in the NBA. Miami has seven consecutive victories.

Washington (15-36), winner of 10 of 18 since John Wall returned from an offseason knee injury, was hoping to enter the All-Star break on a season-best five-game winning streak, but the team ended the first half on Wednesday with a 96-85 loss at Detroit.

"We just didn't do the things we've been doing in the last few games," swingman Trevor Ariza said after the Wizards were outscored by 14 in the final 12 minutes. "We didn't take care of our business, and we let this one slip away."

The Wizards, though, begin a stretch of six of seven at home - they play at Toronto on Monday - on a 3-0 stretch in the nation's capital. Washington has dropped just one game in its last nine at home.

The Wizards have won four in a row at home over Toronto, including both last season when each team protected its home court. The visiting team in this series has lost nine straight.

The Raptors could end that trend - and win three in a row outside Toronto for the first time since Dec. 11-18, 2007 - if they can contain Wall and rookie guard Bradley Beal, who has totaled 41 points and hit 5 of 10 3s in three games since missing five with a sprained right wrist.

Beal's strong play, as well as Wall's return, has virtually taken Jordan Crawford out of coach Randy Wittman's rotation. It's uncertain if Crawford, who averaged 19.1 points, 6.1 assists and 5.1 rebounds in 13 December games, will make his first appearance in four contests, or if he'll be with the team much longer with Thursday's trade deadline looming.

Raptors deal with broken clock, top Wizards 96-88

WASHINGTON (AP) This was a timeless victory for the streaking Toronto Raptors. At least it seemed that way on the floor.

"It felt like I was in high school again," DeMar DeRozan said. "I think we got a shot clock violation - I couldn't even find the shot clock."

Playing with an improvised scoreboard, horn, game clock and 24-second clock because of a malfunction in the Verizon Center's scoring system, the Raptors beat the Washington Wizards 96-88 Tuesday night.

DeRozan and Rudy Gay scored 24 points apiece, and Kyle Lowry had 11 points, 10 assists, six rebounds and four turnovers as Toronto moved within one victory of its total for all of last season.

"It was weird. Kyle got stripped, like, three times looking at the clock," Gay said with a laugh. "My old AAU coach used to tell me: `If you put two rims up in the kitchen, we'll play you.' So it don't matter."

The Raptors took the lead for good in the second quarter and have a three-game road winning streak for the first time since 2007. They are also 6-2 since Gay arrived last month from the Memphis Grizzlies in a three-team trade, and point guard Lowry is finding a simple formula for keeping both of his top scorers happy.

"Get out of the way, give them the ball and move. `Hey, good shot, DeMar.' `Good shot, Rudy.' Those guys are easy to play with," Lowry said.

Rookie Bradley Beal, back in the starting lineup for the first time since taking time off to heal a sprained right wrist, scored 25 points for the Wizards, who had won eight of nine at home. Third-year point guard John Wall shot 1 for 12 from the field and committed seven turnovers in one of his most forgettable games as a pro.

"I'll burn it, burn it and look forward to the next one," Wall said. "It's the first game back after the break."

There was more Wizards angst from Jordan Crawford, who took off his jersey and flung it into the stands as he walked off the court after failing to get off the bench for the fourth straight game. Crawford was an integral part of the scoring attack early in the season but now resides firmly in the doghouse. He did not speak to reporters after the game, and coach Randy Wittman said he didn't see Crawford toss the jersey.

The teams returned from the All-Star break with similar tales of woes and promise. The Raptors started 4-19 and are 18-13 since, aided by the addition of Gay. The Wizards were once 4-28 and have since gone 11-9, helped out by the return of Wall from a knee injury.

Tuesday's game had an unusual vibe because of the makeshift scoreboard. Officials rigged up something that looked as if it were borrowed from a middle school gymnasium and placed it in front of the scorer's table, and 24-second clocks were placed on the floor at the corners. An air horn purchased from a sporting goods store as an emergency backup became the official horn.

It all had an effect on the game. The Raptors took some rushed shots as if the shot clock was close to zero when it actually wasn't. Toronto's players yelled the final seconds of both the first and second quarters from the bench - the crowd was so quiet, it was easy to hear - and DeRozan rose to the occasion both times, making buzzer-beaters with 0.6 and 1.2 seconds left.

In the second half, the public address announcer started blurting out "10" and "five" during possessions to let the players know the time left on the shot clock. He also counted down "four, three, two ..." on some possessions.

"You don't even hear that," said Washington's Martell Webster, who scored 16 points. "So it's like you kind of find yourself in a scramble, and everybody's running around like a chicken with their head cut off."

Gay found his stride in the second quarter, when he scored 12 points to help the Raptors to a 55-46 halftime lead. He got a technical for jawing at length with an official over a traveling call early in the third quarter, and his baseline drive and dunk turned into a three-point play that pushed the lead to 11 a few minutes later.

The Wizards stayed close, pulling within five on Webster's 3-pointer with 5:16 to play. Gay responded with a 3-pointer with 2:24 remaining to get the lead back to 11.

Now Gay gets to face his old team. The Raptors are hosting the Grizzlies on Wednesday.

"We can hang out and stuff after the game and stuff like that, but we're all about business on the court," Gay said. "We're working on a streak right now. We're trying to win games. We don't have time for all the emotional stuff."

NOTES: The Raptors' win ended a nine-game winning streak for the home team in the series. ... Toronto's Terrence Ross won the NBA's slam dunk contest Saturday, but it's not an accomplishment that translates into playing time. He played 3 minutes and didn't score.

THE FACTS: Rudy Gay and DeMar DeRozan each scored 24 points and the Toronto Raptors defeated the Washington Wizards 96-88 for their fifth straight win.

Kyle Lowry had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Raptors (22-32), who ended the Wizards' three-game home winning streak and overcame a faulty scoreboard and shot clock at the Verizon Center.

Bradley Beal led the Wizards (15-37) with 25 points, Martell Webster had 16 and Emeka Okafor 12.

Toronto took the lead for good with a 16-6 run closing the second quarter. After Webster's 3-pointer pulled the Wizards within 83-78, the Raptors countered with a 7-1 run capped by Gay's 3-pointer of the game with 2:22 remaining.

With the overhead scoreboard malfunctioning, temporary shot clocks and a scoreboard were placed on the floor while the public address announcer stated the score and shot clock status occasionally.

QUOTABLE: "They forgot a few times to do a countdown. In the NBA, those things happen. I thought it was just as on the officials as it was us. You get in the habit of looking for the clock and you don't see it. That was the main thing."

THE STAT: Both teams committed 17 turnovers, but Toronto turned them into 24 points compared to 15 for Washington,

QUOTABLE II: "I told them the whole fourth quarter, 'you're down five, you're down four, you're down six' and we hadn't played worth a crap leading up to that, You got to stay with it. It can turn like that, but I don't know if we always give ourselves chance to let it turn."

HOT: In a game with lackluster offense on both sides, finding someone for this category is daunting, but DeRozan scored 15 points in the first half on 6-for-10 shooting. The wing guard finished 9-for-18 from the field and 6-for-7 from the free throw line where the Raptors collectively were 18-for-20.

NOT: John Wall committed seven turnovers and finished 1-for-12 from the field against Toronto, finishing with nine points. With their point guard out of sync, the Wizards shot 38.5 percent from the floor.

QUOTABLE III: "It brought back memories for me. I loved it, the shot clock on the floor. I thought I had shorts on."

NOTABLE: Washington's Jordan Crawford, tied for second on the team in scoring entering the game, did not play for the fourth straight game despite fans chanting his name during the second half. After sitting slumped in his chair on the bench for nearly the entire game, the volume shooting guard removed his jersey and threw it into the stands after the final buzzer. Crawford exited the locker room before reporters entered. ... Gay, acquired from Memphis on Jan. 30, plays the Grizzlies on Wednesday.
