The Boston Celtics have overcome a slew of injuries to remain a factor in the Eastern Conference.

They also withstood three overtimes to beat the Denver Nuggets last week.

The Celtics look to continue their strong play Tuesday night when they emerge from the All-Star break and attempt to come away with a rare win at Denver.

Boston (28-24) lost Rajon Rondo (torn ACL), Jared Sullinger (back surgery) and Leandro Barbosa (torn ACL) to season-ending injuries within the last month. The Celtics seemed headed in the wrong direction with a season-high six-game slide that culminated with Rondo's injury during a 123-111 double-overtime loss in Atlanta on Jan. 25.

They've since turned things around, winning eight of nine - including victories over Miami and the Los Angeles Clippers before entering the break with a 71-69 win over Chicago on Wednesday.

"I know everybody thought we were going to tank because Rondo and Sully went out, but we've been fighting for those guys and ourselves. And that's all you can ask," center Kevin Garnett said. "With that, I'm pleased. I'm not pleased with where we are (compared) to where we could be. But with everything that's been involved this year, we'll take it."

Garnett and the Celtics were surely pleased after a 118-114 triple-overtime victory at home against the Nuggets (33-21) on Feb. 10.

Boston is looking to sweep the season series for the first time since 2003-04, but it has lost three straight and seven of eight in Denver.

Garnett, averaging 17.7 points and 10.2 rebounds over the past 10 games, is hoping to be rested for this season-high five-game road trip. He played just over 6 minutes in Sunday's All-Star game in Houston.

"In the back of my mind you have Denver Tuesday, Lakers Wednesday," Garnett told the team's official website. "I was just thinking about the schedule and having to face these teams second half.

"Mentally you have to be ready for Denver. Their pace is incredible, especially when they're at home. They're 22-3 at home."

Garnett had 20 points, 18 rebounds and six assists in a season-high 47 minutes against the Nuggets last week. Paul Pierce is averaging 22.0 points over the last four matchups, getting a triple-double in the most recent with 27 points, 14 rebounds and 14 assists.

The Nuggets are certainly rested following the break since they didn't have an All-Star despite sitting in fifth place in the Western Conference and ranking third in the league with 105.1 points per game.

They may have been looking forward to some time off, however, since they followed a season-high nine-game winning streak by dropping three in a row.

Leading scorer Danilo Gallinari (illness) and Andre Iguodala (neck) missed the last two games, including a 119-108 loss at Brooklyn on Wednesday.

"Without Gallinari and Iguodala, we're down two of our better defenders. There's no question that Gallo and A.I. give us length and some experienced defensive-minded guys," coach George Karl said.

Gallinari is averaging 20.9 points over his last seven games.

Ty Lawson is averaging 28.0 points and 9.0 assists while shooting 62.3 percent - 9 for 14 from 3-point range - during the losing streak. He had a game-high 29 points against the Celtics on Feb. 10.

Gallinari, Lawson lead Nuggets past Celtics

DENVER (AP) Ty Lawson started the second half of the NBA season the same way he closed the first - on an offensive tear.

Lawson and Danilo Gallinari each scored 26 points, and the Denver Nuggets snapped a three-game losing streak by beating the Boston Celtics 97-90 Tuesday night.

Lawson has averaged 27.5 points in his last four games, well above his season average of 15.8 going into the game against the Celtics.

"I'm just attacking, not thinking about whether I should shoot it, not second-guessing my shot," Lawson said. "I'm just trusting myself and it's been working out for me."

And it's also working for the Nuggets, who gained a split of their season series with Boston after losing in triple overtime to the Celtics the week before. The loss to Boston had ended the Nuggets' season-high nine game winning streak and marked the start of a three-game skid leading up to the All-Star break.

"Tonight, we just didn't close out any quarter very well," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "End of the first, end of the half, the end of the third killed us. They went on their little run to end the game.

"Everybody came into this game wanting to win it and that may have gotten in our way. Each guy wanted to win it instead of trusting the team. We had a great first half, it got away from us in the third and fourth."

Lawson noted that Gallinari (sinus infection) and Andre Iguodala (neck strain), who contributed defensively despite not scoring, returned after missing the previous two games to help make the difference in the rematch with the Celtics.

"Everybody was back," Lawson said. "And it shows how much we've matured as a team, to come back from the All-Star break and beat a team like that."

Andre Miller and Kosta Koufos added 11 points apiece and Kenneth Faried had 16 rebounds to go with his seven points for the Nuggets, who beat Boston for the eighth time in nine games in Denver, including the last four in a row.

"They're one of the better defensive teams in the league and you've got to figure out ways to get baskets," Miller said. "We didn't always shoot the ball the way we wanted to, but we found ways to get some easy baskets and we got to the free throw line. And we finished off the game the right way."

Jeff Green had 20 points off the bench to lead the Celtics, who have been playing well despite losing Rajon Rondo (torn ACL), Jared Sullinger (back surgery) and Leandro Barbosa (torn ACL) to season-ending injuries in the past month.

Avery Bradley added 17 points and Courtney Lee had 15 for the Celtics, who are still looking for their first win on the road against a Western Conference team this season.

"We got stagnant with ball movement," said Boston's Paul Pierce. "We just didn't make the adjustment. A little too much one-on-one. On the other end, we didn't get key stops. We fouled a little bit too much. Every crucial possession that we needed a stop, we didn't get the stop that we needed and they were able to pull away."

Behind much of the night, the Nuggets stretched their lead to 78-70 going into the fourth quarter when Corey Brewer made layups on successive possessions.

The Celtics fought back to tie it at 84-all on Bradley's 3-pointer with 5:37 left to play, but Gallinari hit a clutch 3-pointer and Lawson added a basket on a putback.

After Kevin Garnett missed a pair of free throws, Faried grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back in to give the Nuggets a 93-86 lead with 2:35 left.

Boston got a driving layup from Green and a pair of free throws from Jason Terry to cut Denver's lead to 94-90 with 1:09 left.

After Faried missed a pair free throws, Garnett missed a short, contested jumper and Gallinari rebounded for Denver, getting the ball out to Lawson. He was fouled and made both free throws to give the Nuggets a six-point cushion with 20.7 seconds remaining.

The Celtics didn't score again.

Boston had pulled to within four points late in the third quarter when Denver's JaVale McGee was called for goal-tending on Green's 3-pointer. That cut into a lead that Denver had built with a 9-2 run punctuated by a 3-pointer by Gallinari and a swooping one-handed dunk by McGee.

Lee hit a 17-foot jumper as the second-quarter buzzer sounded, offsetting a 3-pointer by Lawson moments earlier and giving the Celtics a 50-49 halftime lead.

Boston led by as many as nine points after going on a 12-2 burst that culminated in Lee's three-point play for a 36-27 lead with 7:08 left in the quarter. Denver answered with a 12-3 run, pulling into a 39-all tie when Miller drained a 3-pointer and Lawson drove for layups on back-to-back possessions.

NOTES: The game was preceded by a moment of silence for Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss, who died Monday at 80. ... In a pregame ceremony, Iguodala was presented with his Olympic ring by USA Basketball executive director Jim Tooley. Iguodala, who missed two previous games with a neck strain, was held scoreless on 0-7 shooting in his return. ... The Celtics continue a five-game road trip by playing the Lakers on Wednesday in the second of a back-to-back set. ... Boston missed a chance to sweep the season series with Denver for the first time since 2003-04.

THE FACTS: Danilo Gallinari returned to Denver's lineup to score 26 points, Ty Lawson also had 26 points and the Denver Nuggets held off a late rally to beat the Boston Celtics 97-90 on Tuesday night.

Kenneth Faried had seven points and 16 rebounds for Denver, which snapped a three-game skid and improved to 23-3 at home.

Jeff Green and Avery Bradley each had season highs with 20 and 17 points, respectively, for the Celtics, who lost for just the second time in 10 games.

Boston trailed by eight heading into the fourth but made it a game when Bradley hit a corner 3-pointer to tie it at 84. Gallinari answered at the other end with his fourth 3-pointer, giving Denver an 87-84 lead and they never trailed again.

QUOTABLE: "Every crucial possession that we needed a stop we didn't get the stop that we needed and they were able to pull away."

THE STAT: The Celtics led by one at halftime on the strength of some good shooting. They hit 51 percent from the field to take a 50-49 lead at the break. They wilted in the second half, shooting just 36 percent.

TURNING POINT: The Nuggets always try to play fast to take advantage of the thin air in Colorado, and Tuesday it was a big advantage. The older Celtics started to feel the effects of the altitude in the second half as Denver continued to push the pace. Boston missed six of its last seven shots in the game and Kevin Garnett missed two free throws that would have made it a three-point game late.

QUOTABLE III: "It got to us, you could clearly see it. You could see us going downhill a little bit. That's why they play here. George (Karl) is smart, and so is Doug Moe. They know pace in this place is tough."

HOT: Lawson has found another gear the past four games. He is averaging 27.5 points and shooting 62 percent from the field and 58 percent from 3-point range. He is also averaging 8.2 assists in that span.

QUOTABLE II: "I'm just attacking, not thinking about whether I should shoot or second guessing my shot. Just trusting myself and it's been working out."

NOT: Nuggets guard Andre Iguodala didn't appear to be fully recovered from the neck strain he suffered against Boston on Feb. 10. He missed all seven of his shots from the field and three of his four free throws, one of which was an airball. Iguodala showed his versatility, though, by contributing with seven assists and some tough defense down the stretch.

GOOD MOVE: With the Celtics trying to stay close, Green's hustle paid off. He raced down the court and came from behind to block a layup attempt by Corey Brewer. The ball bounced to near halfcourt and led to a layup by Bradley that made it 83-81 Denver.

BAD MOVE: The Celtics function best when they're sharing the ball but in the second half they tried to go it alone. They played too much one-on-one ball and didn't have a good flow to the offense. It was a big reason they scored just 40 points in the second half.

QUOTABLE IV: "In the third quarter we got away from the offense."

NOTABLE: The Celtics had only 10 players active for the game. Forward Terrence Williams, signed to a 10-day contract, wasn't eligible to play because the team hadn't received a letter of clearance from his team in China. ... The Nuggets have won eight straight at home but had their streak of games in which they scored at least 100 points snapped at 13. ... Boston has held 13 of its last 16 to less than 100 points. Two of those games went to multiple overtimes.
