Jazz-Timberwolves Preview

The road hasn't been kind to the Utah Jazz all season, but their struggles defensively have made it especially unfriendly lately.

Perhaps the Jazz can carry over the momentum from an impressive home win in their last game.

Utah will try to avoid its fourth straight road loss on Wednesday night when it visits the injury-plagued Minnesota Timberwolves, who managed to pick up an elusive victory in their last game.

The Jazz (29-24) stopped a two-game skid and won for the 11th time in 13 home games with a 109-94 victory on Tuesday over an Oklahoma City team that had won four straight by 20 or more points.

"I think that was the biggest game of the year for us, especially coming off two losses," guard Earl Watson said.

Utah, however, hasn't matched that success on the road. The Jazz have lost 18 of 27 away from Salt Lake City, including three in a row after a 120-109 defeat at Sacramento on Saturday.

After holding the Thunder - the NBA's top-scoring team - 12.4 points below their season average on Tuesday, Utah has given up just 88.2 points per game in its last five at home.

It's been a much different story away from home. They've allowed 109.0 points per game and 27-of-58 shooting (46.6 percent) from 3-point range during their road losing streak.

They'll try to tighten things up against a Minnesota team that had shot 5 for 29 from beyond the arc in its previous two contests before hitting 8 of 14 in a 100-92 win at Cleveland on Monday.

The Timberwolves (19-30) still have three starters out due to injury, and won for only the fourth time in 20 games since star forward Kevin Love went down with a broken right hand.

They've also lost six of seven at home, with three of the defeats by six or fewer points.

"It's been a long month for us," said guard Luke Ridnour, who had a team-high 21 points on Monday. "It's always tough. We're competitors. You want to win games. Losing, as much as you don't want to say it, takes a toll on you."

Ridnour has stepped up recently, averaging 19.3 points on 59.5 percent shooting in his last three games.

After a slow start in his return from a torn ACL, Ricky Rubio is starting to return to form with 16.0 points and 8.3 assists per game in his last three.

The Timberwolves shot 52.0 percent from the field against the Cavaliers, and hope to continue that efficiency on Wednesday after shooting a season-low 34.5 percent in a 106-84 loss at Utah on Jan. 2.

Utah big men Al Jefferson, Paul Millsap, Marvin Williams and Enes Kanter combined for 52 points, and the Jazz outscored the Timberwolves 56-36 in the paint in the first meeting.

Jefferson and Millsap bounced back with a combined 41 points and 17 rebounds on Tuesday after totaling 22 and 11, respectively, against the Kings.

Millsap had averaged 23.5 points and 9.8 rebounds in his previous six games against Minnesota before finishing with 14 points and no rebounds in last month's meeting.

While the Jazz have won eight of 10 in the series, they've lost the last two in Minnesota.

Jefferson powers Jazz over Wolves 97-93

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) During his three years in Minnesota, Timberwolves fans saw everything Al Jefferson showed in a Utah Jazz uniform on Wednesday night. The endless pump fakes, the odd-angle jumpers, the tenacity on the boards.

Everything except the big fella running a coast-to-coast break and igniting what proved to be a game-deciding run.

Jefferson had 20 points and 11 rebounds, and Paul Millsap scored 21 points to power the Utah Jazz to a 97-93 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday night.

"He's cat-quick now," Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin said with a smile. "He's always saying he's a (small forward). That was a good look."

Jefferson helped the Jazz overcome a sluggish start against his former team to pick up a rare road win against a Western Conference opponent. Utah now has four wins in 17 road games in the West.

Big Al spent three seasons in Minnesota after being traded from Boston as part of a package for Kevin Garnett, and he endeared himself to the long-suffering fan base here with his creative low post game. He was traded to Utah in 2010, partly so the Wolves could make room for Kevin Love in the frontcourt. Love is out with a right hand that is broken for the second time this season, and Jefferson had his way with the rest of the Wolves down low.

But his highlight came in the third quarter when he ripped the ball away from Luke Ridnour and took it the length of the court for a layup to give the Jazz a 60-59 lead in the third quarter.

"Yeah, that was kinda cool," Jefferson said with a chuckle.

That seemed to jumpstart the Jazz, who went on a 16-6 run over the next six minutes. Enes Kanter scored six points early in the fourth quarter and Utah led 81-67 midway through the final period.

As they have done so many times this season, the Wolves went on a late run, ripping off nine straight points to pull within 90-86 with 50 seconds to go. Millsap fouled Williams on a 3-pointer 30 seconds later, and he hit all three shots to make it 93-91.

But another former Timberwolves player, Randy Foye, hit four free throws down the stretch to put the game away.

"It's a lesson we should have learned by this point," Wolves coach Rick Adelman said about another slow start.

Derrick Williams had 24 points and a career-high 16 rebounds, and Ricky Rubio had 18 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds for the Timberwolves, who shot a season-low 34 percent.

Nikola Pekovic had 19 points and 13 rebounds, and Luke Ridnour scored 18 points for Minnesota, which lost for the 16th time in 19 games.

"It's tough," Williams said. "We're trying our hardest, but we can't just keep doing this over and over. We've got to win a few of these games. We try to get this game right before the All-Star break to give us a little momentum like we did last year. We had a good effort tonight, just couldn't get it done."

The Jazz trailed 17-10 after a lifeless first quarter, shooting just 25 percent from the field. But Jefferson and Millsap started flexing their muscle to gradually take control of the game. The Jazz outscored Minnesota 54-30 in the paint and 43-12 off the bench.

"I guess it's just the way they play us," Millsap said. "They are so concerned about Al I just feed off him, good looks, offensive rebounds, things like that get me going."

Both teams were playing the final game before the All-Star break, and just about everyone appeared to have one eye on the game and one eye on their flight out of town in the early going. Shooting percentages were in the high 20s well into the second quarter and turnovers were rampant.

The break will do both teams a ton of good.

The Wolves have suffered through major injuries all season long. Love (broken hand), Chase Budinger (knee) and Brandon Roy (knee) have missed most of the season, while Andrei Kirilenko (bruised quad) missed his fifth straight game. J.J. Barea played with a sprained foot that could use a few days off and Ridnour has taken a beating all season long while playing out of position at shooting guard.

The Jazz missed forward Gordon Hayward for the 10th straight game with a sprained right shoulder.

NOTES: This marked the eighth game this season Jefferson and Millsap each scored at least 20 points. ... Kanter, whom the Wolves considered drafting over Williams two years ago, had 10 points and DeMarre Carroll had 11 points and five rebounds.

THE FACTS: Al Jefferson had 20 points, 11 rebounds, and a key third-quarter steal, to lead the Utah Jazz in a 97-93 defeat of the Minnesota Timberwolves at Target Center on Wednesday night. Paul Millsap added 21 points as the Jazz overcame a strong effort from the Wolves' Derrick Williams, who finished with 24 points and a career-best 16 rebounds.

THE STAT: After being outscored 16-2 over a 10:05 stretch in the first and second quarters, the Jazz went on a 16-2 run of their own and closed the first half with 32 points in the final 9:30.

QUOTABLE: "We were kind of running in the mud in the beginning of the ballgame but we played better in the second quarter. The grit that it takes to grind this game out. One thing we didn't fall to was feeling sorry for ourselves because we weren't playing. It was a great win for us going into the break."

TURNING POINT: Jefferson picked Luke Ridnour's pocket and drove for a lay-up with 2:45 left in the third quarter -- sparking a 23-7 run that put the Jazz up 81-67. The Timberwolves closed to within two with five seconds to play but ultimately could not overcome the 14-point deficit.

HOT: Ricky Rubio, on his way back from last year's season-ending ACL injury, fell one rebound shy of a triple-double to go with 18 points and 10 assists. Over his last six games, Rubio is averaging over 14 points and 10 assists -- well above his career average of 10.2 points and 8.2 assists.

NOT: The Timberwolves continued their ongoing shooting woes with a season-low 34.5 percent effort against the Jazz. The Wolves are currently 25th in the league, shooting 43.9 percent for the season.

ROOKIE WATCH: After averaging over 26 minutes in seven February games, Timberwolves rookie Alexey Shved played a season-low 10 minutes against the Jazz. He was not injured or sick.

NOTABLE: Rubio stole the ball from Earl Watson with 30 seconds the play and the Jazz up by four. Watson recovered in time to force Rubio into an awkward miss of a fast-break lay-up. Watson was then fouled and made two free throws to put the game away. ... The Jazz scored just 10 points in the first quarter, a season-low for the opening 12 minutes. They did not attempt a free throw either. ... With the win, the Jazz are still just 4-13 on the road against Western Conference opponents. ... The loss was the Timberwolves 11th loss in the last 13 games.
