Kings-Grizzlies Preview

With their new players starting to fit in, the Memphis Grizzlies will try to keep taking advantage of a favorable schedule.

The Grizzlies continue a string of games against sub-.500 opponents when the Sacramento Kings visit FedExForum on Tuesday night.

Memphis (32-18) experienced some initial trouble after sending leading scorer Rudy Gay to Toronto on Jan. 30 in the second of two recent trades designed to help the team avoid luxury taxes. The Grizzlies dropped three of their first four after completing that three-team deal but have followed with back-to-back wins, the most recent a 105-88 victory over Minnesota on Sunday.

Tayshaun Prince, one of three players acquired in the Gay trade, had a team-best 18 points while making all eight of his shots to match a franchise record for most attempts without a miss. Austin Daye, another recent acquisition, scored 16.

"It's a chemistry thing. Everybody's getting comfortable with each other," All-Star forward Zach Randolph said. "It's just something we've got to continue to work on."

The Grizzlies will try to head into the All-Star break with their first three-game win streak since a four-game run Jan. 6-11. A visit from the Kings (19-33) should give them a good chance to do so as Memphis has won nine of 11 matchups, including a pair of decisive victories this season.

The Grizzlies beat Sacramento 113-81 on the road Jan. 7 and 85-69 on Jan. 18 for their sixth straight home win in the series.

The Kings are the second of five straight Memphis opponents that have losing records. Sacramento, though, is on the verge of matching its longest win streak of the season.

To earn a third straight victory for the first time since Dec. 8, the Kings will have to overcomes their season-long woes on the road. They've dropped four straight away from home and are 5-21 there overall.

"You've got to play with a different personality on the road," coach Keith Smart said. "Hopefully, we can use what we've done (the past two games)."

The Kings' 69 points in Memphis were their lowest output of 2012-13, but they've averaging 118.5 in the past two games after scoring 89.1 over their previous eight.

Isaiah Thomas had 17 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter of a 117-111 victory over Houston on Sunday, while John Salmons scored 10 of his 23 during that period. DeMarcus Cousins contributed 20 points despite foul trouble.

"Obviously, we have some things we have to work on," forward Jason Thompson said. "It's knowing that if you make the extra pass and you can get guys a better look. If our guys have that mentality on the road, we should be good."

Thomas, who has totaled 48 points in the past two games, has been held to a combined 18 and 25.0 percent shooting (6 of 24) in the two matchups with the Grizzlies this season.

Kings guard Tyreke Evans has totaled 13 points and shot 4 of 13 against Memphis in 2012-13.

Randolph missed the last three home games against the Kings due to a back strain.

Gasol, Conley lead Grizzlies past Kings, 108-101

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) Known for his stellar defensive play, Tony Allen has been coming through offensively for the Memphis Grizzlies the past few games.

Allen scored a season-high 19 points and led a key late third-quarter run in the Grizzlies' 108-101 victory over Sacramento on Tuesday night, helping Memphis beat the Kings at home for the seventh straight time.

An 8.4-point scorer on the season, Allen has averaged 14.7 points in his last three games - all Memphis wins.

"The last few games he's been scoring a few points and he's made shots," said Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins. "He's gotten to the basket, he's made good decisions."

Allen had seven points during a 13-8 run that gave the Grizzlies a 10-point lead in the closing seconds of the third quarter. He could have had two more points during the run, but his reverse layup was tipped in by Darrell Arthur.

"Tony is everywhere, he's all over the place," Grizzlies center Marc Gasol. "We need Tony to do what he did. He's a great player."

Gasol led the Grizzlies with 24 points and 12 rebounds and Mike Conley scored 22 points. But it was Allen's accuracy (8-of-12 shooting) and energy that helped Memphis enter the All-Star break on a three-game winning streak.

Allen's hustle led to a late-third quarter field goal that put the Grizzlies ahead 79-71. After Jerryd Bayless missed a 3-pointer, Allen battled to gain possession of the loose ball and drove in for a layup.

"Tony has been playing outstanding," Hollins said. "His defense has been outstanding. Early in the game focus was a problem. He was gambling and giving up buckets, but as the game wore on he got into it. Usually there's one guy who's not having a good night because of Tony Allen."

Allen said some of his recent offensive production is a result of team's offensive philosophy.

"We're an inside-out team and Marc Gasol helps me get a lot of my scoring," Allen said. "I can benefit from him. I can take what (defenses) give me."

DeMarcus Cousins scored 23 points and Tyreke Evans had 20 for the Kings, who were attempting to win three straight for the first time in more than two months.

Bayless made a 3-pointer in the closing seconds of the third quarter to give Memphis an 84-73 lead. The Grizzlies boosted their advantage to 13 on several occasions early in the fourth and withstood a late comeback try by the Kings, who pulled to 99-93 with 4:19 to go on a layup by Evans.

Memphis recovered as Gasol and Conley combined to score the team's final nine points. Conley made four free throws and a runner in the lane and Gasol hit a free throw and field goal.

"(Our) mistakes were higher in the third quarter and that's where the separation of the game came from," Kings coach Keith Smart said. "I thought (our) guys did everything they could to put themselves in position to win."

NOTES: Grizzlies reserve forward Quincy Pondexter, who returned Sunday in a win over Minnesota after missing 22 games with a sprained left MCL, did not play against the Kings. Memphis coach Lionel Hollins preferred to give him additional time to recover. "I'm just ready to get healthy so I can be able to produce for my team," Pondexter said. ... Since acquiring Tayshaun Prince, Austin Daye and Ed Davis in a late-January trade, the Grizzlies have become more efficient distributing the ball. The Grizzlies have assisted on more than 60 percent of their field goals (142 of 227) during the six-game stretch. Memphis ranked 25th in the league in assists-to-field goals in the 45 games before the trade. ... Sacramento is 5-22 on the road this season. ... Memphis improved to 16-0 this season when scoring 100 or more points.

THE FACTS: The Memphis Grizzlies have found an unexpected source of offense lately. For the second time in three games, defensive specialist Tony Allen has scored a season high, this time tossing in 19 points to help lead the Grizzlies to their third straight victory, 108-101, over the Sacramento Kings at FedExForum Tuesday night. Allen also had eight rebounds, three assists, two steals and a blocked shot, as well as a memorable throw-down dunk.

QUOTABLE: "I think he's been real patient in picking and choosing when to be aggressive and when to try to find his shots. He's been aggressive getting to the rim and doing a good job of offensive rebounding and pushing the break."

THE STAT: The Grizzlies entered the game as the NBA's stingiest team, allowing a league-best 90 ppg. A lot of that had to do with their play at home where no opponent this season had scored 100 points until the Kings hit the century mark on a Tyreke Evans' layup with 31 seconds left. The Grizzlies began the season holding their first 28 opponents at home under 100 points, the longest streak to start a season by an NBA team in the shot-clock era.

TURNING POINT: Sacramento used a 10-2 run midway through the third quarter to pull to within 68-67. But the Grizzlies quickly responded by closing out the period on a 16-6 run to lead 84-73 heading into the final period.

HOT: The Grizzlies three-game winning streak has coincided with the rediscovery of their offense. Over the last three games, the team is shooting .506 (118-233) from the floor, far above their season average of .440.

NOT: After scoring 10 or more points in nine straight games, which including three with more than 20, Grizzlies' backup guard Jerryd Bayless has scored a total of just 13 points in the last two games. Bayless had six points on 2 of 7 shooting against the Kings and is shooting just 36 percent in the last two games.

QUOTABLE II: "Definitely a lot more passing. They share the ball a lot better. They are a tough team to guard because it a threat at every position on the floor now, even in the second unit." Sacramento's DeMarcus Cousins on the Grizzlies without Rudy Gay.

NOTABLE: Coupled with Denver's loss to Toronto Tuesday night, the Grizzlies will head into the All-Star break in fourth place in the Western Conference with a 33-18 record. They are a game ahead of the Nuggets, who fell to 33-20. The Nuggets to play at Brooklyn Wednesday, but a win would leave them percentage points behind the Grizzlies. ... Grizzlies center Marc Gasol finished with game highs of 24 points and 12 rebounds. He now had four double-doubles in his last six games. Mike Conley added 22 points to go with seven assists. ... The Kings were led by center DeMarcus Cousins, who had 23 points, seven rebounds, five steals and four assists. Evans added 20 points and seven rebounds. ... The Grizzlies improve to 16-0 when scoring 100 or more points. ... The Grizzlies have had assists on over 62.5 percent of their made field goals since trading Rudy Gay and gaining Tayshaun Prince, Austin Daye and Ed Davis. Prior to the trade, the Grizzlies were ranked 25th in the NBA in assists-to field goals made (.568).
