The Memphis Grizzlies have struggled since dealing Rudy Gay. Perhaps surprisingly, though, his absence has seemingly taken a bigger toll on defense.

The Grizzlies' defensive woes, however, pale in comparison to what the Golden State Warriors are experiencing.

Both will try to avoid three-game losing streaks Friday night when they meet in Memphis.

The Grizzlies (30-18) have lost four of six and are 1-3 after trading Gay to Toronto on Jan. 30. Gay was their leading scorer at 17.2 points per game, and while the Grizzlies' production has dipped some, the more noticeable change has been on defense.

Memphis allowed 89.5 ppg and 43.6 percent shooting with Gay on the roster, but is giving up 95.3 points on 49.3 percent shooting since his trade. It allowed Atlanta to shoot 51.4 percent in a 103-92 road loss on Wednesday.

"We weren't playing our game," Marc Gasol told the NBA's official website. "They ran at us every time, and they put a lot of pressure on the ball. It hurts even more to get beat at your own game, and get outworked. ... Obviously we're struggling a little bit right now, but we're going to fight and figure it out."

Gay has 74 points in three games for the Raptors, while the players who came to Memphis in the three-team deal - Tayshaun Prince, Austin Daye and Ed Davis - have combined for 41 points in three games, with 31 coming from Prince.

Gasol is also having a hard time finding his shot since the trade, averaging 12.3 points on 34.7 percent in the four contests.

Jerryd Bayless, however, continues to respond well to playing increased minutes, scoring 15 on 6-of-9 shooting with five assists in 25 minutes against the Hawks. Bayless is averaging 19.8 points while shooting 55.1 percent - including 7-of-14 from 3-point range - in the last five games.

The Warriors (30-19) had won four straight before dropping two in a row, giving up a total of 259 points in losses at Houston and Oklahoma City.

After letting the Rockets tie an NBA record with 23 3-pointers on Tuesday, a fog delay prevented Golden State from arriving in Oklahoma City until about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday. The Warriors may have felt the ill effects of the late arrival, falling behind the Thunder 42-22 early in the second quarter en route to a 119-98 loss.

Despite getting run over in their last two games, All-Star forward David Lee isn't necessarily concerned moving forward.

"I think (Tuesday) we ran into a hot team and we did not play as well as we should have defensively and (Wednesday) we fall victim to the same thing Oklahoma City does to everyone in this building," said Lee, averaging 19.2 points and 11.0 rebounds. "With that being said, it's not an excuse. We played poorly defensively both games, but I don't see it as a trend, I see it as something we have to get better at."

The Warriors played fine defense against the Grizzlies on Jan. 9, but fell 94-87 - their eighth consecutive defeat in the series. Golden State has also lost seven straight in Memphis, its last win there coming on April 4, 2008.

Stephen Curry is averaging 22.6 points in his last eight games versus the Grizzlies, combining for 50 in two losses this season.

Grizzlies upend Warriors 99-93

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) The Memphis Grizzlies brought back the inside play and tight defense that made them successful earlier this season.

And the performance with the team's new players removed the bad thoughts of the previous week's play.

Marc Gasol scored six of his 20 points down the stretch to help the Grizzlies end their two-game slide by defeating the Golden State Warriors 99-93 on Friday night.

The Grizzlies said it was the most comfortable the team had been since adding Tayshaun Prince, Austin Daye and Ed Davis in a three-team deal that sent Rudy Gay to Toronto on Jan. 30.

"We let our defense dictate our offense," said Gasol, who also grabbed 11 rebounds and was 9 of 14 from the field.

"We were unselfish defensively. We were helping each other. We knew their schemes, and were real aggressive in trying to get them away from what they were trying to do.

" ... Offensively, we moved it, and we were fortunate that we hit a lot of shots from the outside."

Tony Allen had a season-high 17 points on 7 of 8 shooting, Zach Randolph had 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Jerryd Bayless finished with 14 points.

Daye had 12 points for Memphis, providing a spark in the first half.

The adjustment to new players and dealing with trade rumors contributed to two tough losses earlier in the week - first at home to Phoenix, then in Atlanta.

All the talk about the team's mindset after the shakeup led Memphis coach Lionel Hollins to address the issue in a 20-plus-minute pregame discussion. Among the topics was for the team to forget the changes and play their style of game.

"We finally kind of calmed down and let the game come to us," said point guard Mike Conley, who had 10 of Memphis' 26 assists on 36 field goals.

"We played inside-out down the stretch. Got it to Marc and (Randolph) and played off of them. That's what we've been known for the last few years, and finally got back to the inside-out style of basketball."

Stephen Curry matched his season high with 32 points and eight assists for the Warriors, who lost their third straight. David Lee was the only other Golden State player in double figures with 26 points, connecting on 10 of 16 shots.

While allowing 63 points in the first half, the Warriors limited Memphis to 36 after the break, a turnaround that presented some optimism for Golden State.

"We fell a little bit short," Curry said. "It's a frustrating feeling for us losing three in a row. But it is a positive that we can take from this game knowing that we got back to our brand of basketball the last 24 minutes."

Warriors coach Mark Jackson said the second half was a much better performance on both ends of the floor for his team.

"I was pleased with the defensive effort in the second half," Jackson said. "We gave up too many points in the first half. ... We played our brand of basketball (in the second half). I was pleased with that. It was a tough loss for us."

Memphis took over in the fourth quarter with nine unanswered points after consecutive 3-pointers from Curry gave the Warriors their last lead of the game with about 8 minutes left.

The victory moved the Grizzlies 1 1/2 games ahead of Golden State for the fifth playoff spot in the Western Conference.

"We look at those standings every day as we walk out," Allen said. "We knew those guys were right on our heels, and we needed to get this win."

The first half had both teams hitting above 50 percent from the field as the Grizzlies carried a 63-56 lead. Allen, who hit all five of his shots in the half, had 13 points.

Daye hit 4 of 5 shots, including 3 of 4 outside the arc, for 12 points.

"I hadn't made a shot in here yet," Daye said, "so it felt good to hit that first shot. Once I hit that first shot, I knew had a couple more in my chamber."

Memphis was 8 of 20 on 3-pointers, compared to 6 of 17 for the Warriors.

It didn't take long for Golden State to erase Memphis' halftime advantage, scoring six unanswered points to open the third as part of an 11-2 run that put the Warriors up 67-65 near the midway point of the period.

The game was close through the rest of the third with five ties and four lead changes in the period. The final lead change of the period came on an inside basket by Tayshaun Prince as Memphis led 77-76 entering the fourth.

NOTES: The Grizzlies have won nine straight in the series. ... The Warriors have not defeated the Grizzlies since Nov. 3, 2010. Their last win in Memphis was April 4, 2008. ... Golden State G Jarrett Jack missed his second straight game with a right shoulder contusion. ... The three-game slide for the Warriors matches their longest of the season. ... The 63 first-half points for Memphis was only the second time this season the Grizzlies have surpassed 60 points in a half. ... It was Gasol's ninth double-double of the season and Randolph's 30th.

THE FACTS: It's been a while since the Memphis Grizzlies played with passion and energy on both ends of the floor. Doing so Friday night in a pivotal game against Golden State reminded the Grizzlies what kind of team they can be when doing so. The Grizzlies jumped on the Warriors in the first half, withstood a rally in the third quarter and eventually pulled out a much-needed 99-93 victory at FedExForum. The win snapped the Grizzlies' (31-18) two-game slide. Center Marc Gasol led the Grizzlies with 20 points to go with his 11 rebounds and five assists. Stephen Curry scored a game-high 32 points for the Warriors (30-20).

QUOTABLE: "Tonight was big. It was a team that we had to beat. That was the bottom line for us. It was a little step forward. We've got to be consistent now, get our rest, tomorrow come back and get some work and get ready for Minnesota [Sunday]."

THE STAT: One of the reasons the Grizzlies were able to get five players to score in double figures was because of their sharing of the basketball. It's something they did very well during their 12-2 start to the season. The Grizzlies had 26 assists on their 36 field goals. In the second quarter alone, they had 10 assists on 11 field goals. Mike Conley led the team with 10 assists.

TURNING POINT: Back-to-back 3-pointers by Curry put Golden State ahead 86-83 with 8:10 to play. That's when the Grizzlies dug in defensively, closing out the game with a 16-7 run as defensive stopper Tony Allen took it upon himself to guard Curry.

HOT: The Grizzlies' Allen also made his presence felt on the offensive end, going 7-for-8 to score a season-high 17 points before fouling out in the closing seconds. Allen bested his previous season high of 15, set Jan. 2 at Boston.

NOT: With Allen guarding him most of the night, Golden State guard Klay Thompson was held to nine points as he missed 10 of his 14 shots. Thompson even found it difficult to score in the fourth quarter against the smaller Conley.

QUOTABLE II: "For three straight games now, we've given up over 60 points, and 70 in one game [in the first half]. You have to turn that around and we did that in the second half. We fell a little short. NOTABLE: Golden State was basically a two-man team offensively, with Curry and All-Star forward David Lee having their way against the Grizzlies. Curry finished with his season-high 32 as he made 11 of his 22 shots, including 4-for-9 from 3-point range. Curry also had eight assists and five rebounds. Lee made 7 of his first 10 shots before finishing the night with 26 points and six boards. No other Warrior scored in double figures. ... Memphis All-Star forward Zach Randolph didn't shoot the ball well (4-for-13) but still managed to pick up another double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. ... Golden State played without backup point guard Jarrett Jack, who had a right shoulder contusion. The Warriors missed his 13 points and six assists as his replacement, second-year guard Charles Jenkins, was scoreless in seven minutes. ... Austin Daye had his best game since joining the Grizzlies last week in the Rudy Gay trade. Daye scored all 12 of his points in the first half when he was 4-for-5 from the floor and 3-for-4 from 3-point range. He missed his only shot attempt in the second half. Daye also had four rebounds and two assists. ... With the win, the Grizzlies have swept the season series against the Warriors, 3-0, giving them the tiebreaker for playoff seeding. They now have won nine in a row against Golden State. ... The Warriors are not 0-3 on their four-game road trip, which concludes Saturday night at Dallas. It ties their longest losing streak of the season.
