Bucks-Jazz Preview

The Utah Jazz have been getting some good results with a shortened bench.

They haven't had a bad result when the Milwaukee Bucks have visited Salt Lake City since 2001.

Utah goes for a 10th win in 11 home games and its 11th consecutive victory with the Bucks on town on Wednesday night.

Mo Williams (thumb) hasn't played since Dec. 22 and isn't expected back for two weeks, backup Earl Watson (leg) is out indefinitely and Gordon Hayward could miss a sixth consecutive game with a sprained right shoulder.

Still, the Jazz (27-22) have won three of four and 12 of 17 after opening a three-game homestand with Monday's 98-91 overtime victory over Sacramento.

Second-year shooting guard Alec Burks finished with a season-high 14 points while logging some key minutes at point guard behind starter Jamaal Tinsley, while forward DeMarre Carroll reached double digits in a career-best third consecutive game.

"We've got some guys who weren't getting the playing time, but they can really play and now they're showing it," forward Al Jefferson said following Tuesday's practice.

Veteran guard Randy Foye has also been making the most of his time on the floor, averaging 15.8 points while shooting 50 percent (37 for 74) from 3-point range over the last 12 games. Foye has back-to-back 20-point games for the first time in 2012-13 after scoring six of his 20 in the extra period on Monday when Utah won its third straight at EnergySolutions Arena.

The Jazz are undefeated at home against Milwaukee since a 119-112 OT loss on Oct. 30, 2001.

The Bucks (25-22) were hoping to arrive in Salt Lake City on a three-game road winning streak against Western Conference opponents, but they blew a 15-point halftime lead and fell 112-104 in Denver on Tuesday.

Starting guards Monta Ellis and Brandon Jennings scored 12 points apiece and shot a combined 11 for 36 - including 0 for 8 from beyond the arc - as the team lost for the third time in four games.

Denver had 33 points on the break as Milwaukee's East-worst average in that category increased to 15.5.

"They were able to get a lot of fast-break points," said Samuel Dalembert, who hit 17 of 21 shots and scored a career-best 35 points with 12 rebounds. "And then, there were so many shots that we weren't making. They got momentum going for them and we couldn't stop them."

The Jazz are holding teams to 89.0 points on 41.4 percent shooting during their home winning streak, but they know that the Bucks are going to get plenty of opportunities to score. Milwaukee leads the NBA with 86.9 field-goal attempts per game after hitting 48 of 100 shots on Tuesday.

"They're a high-energy team," Jefferson said. "Great backcourt with Monta Ellis and Jennings, so we're going to have to match their intensity and try to take advantage of our inside presence."

Ellis, who will be facing the Jazz for the first time with Milwaukee, topped 30 points in his final three games against Utah with Golden State.

If Jefferson and his teammates are scoring inside, though, Ellis' production may not matter. The Jazz are 15-3 when they score at least 46 points in the paint, a number they've hit in six of their last seven home games.

Milwaukee is 7-14 when it allows 46 points or more in the lane, and it's surrendered an average of 51.7 in its last seven games.

The Jazz have had a plus-15.6 margin in the paint in winning four of the last five meetings with the Bucks.

Utah big men lead Jazz to 100-86 win over Bucks

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Enes Kanter had been in a major slump his last three games, shooting a combined 3 of 13 for seven points.

The big man was a difference-maker Wednesday night in Utah's 100-86 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks.

The second-year Jazz player from Turkey started 6 for 6 from the field, including 5 of 5 with five rebounds, a block and an assist in the second quarter as Utah took control after trailing by 12 points in the first.

"He hit the sophomore wall, as I call it, but he bounced back," Jazz starting center Al Jefferson said of Kanter's recent struggles. "I just told him to start relaxing and just let the game come to him. That's what he did.

"Everybody knows he's mad talented. Everyone knows what he can do. Sometimes your body just (doesn't) want to agree with your mind. Sometimes you've just got to fight through it and I think he did that."

Paul Millsap and Jefferson each scored 19 points while Kanter had 17 and a career-high five blocks in 17 minutes for the Jazz, who improved to 28-22.

Utah's big men had a huge game, with Derrick Favors adding nine points and 11 rebounds.

Kanter set the tone late in the first quarter as Milwaukee forward John Henson tried to drive the lane.

Henson looked as if he had run into a brick wall, with Kanter forcing a jump ball.

"He was playing smart and playing big inside," Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin said. "I thought he made some great passes, too."

It was a stark contrast to Saturday night in Portland, where Kanter laid a goose egg, shooting 0 of 7 for zero points.

"Every time I have had a game like up in Portland, I am just sitting down and just talking to Big Al and my coaches," Kanter said. "That's helped me. I'm just young. I just go out there and fight. That's what I try to do."

Jefferson, who could see the 20-year-old Kanter eventually taking his job - arguably one reason Big Al is the constant source of trade rumors - is there to support his protege.

"Every time I have a bad game and I've struggled, he sits down with me and talks to me," Kanter said of Jefferson. "(He says), `You'll get through this. Just keep your head up."'

Utah dominated inside as the Bucks were without the NBA's leading shot blocker, Larry Sanders, because of a back injury sustained Tuesday night in Denver. The Jazz held a 31-10 advantage on second-chance points and a 56-36 edge on points in the paint.

"They did a good job of eating glass," Bucks forward-center Drew Gooden said. "That was the difference in the game."

Jefferson and Favors led Utah with 11 rebounds apiece, and the Jazz had a 50-37 advantage on the boards.

Brandon Jennings and Ersan Ilyasova led Milwaukee with 17 points apiece.

Samuel Dalembert, coming off a career night in which he scored 35 points in a loss at Denver, was held to 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting. He finished with 11 rebounds and four blocks.

"When Sam is out there, we have a little more beef," Bucks coach Jim Boylan said. "We are a thin team, that is our makeup. . And when we go up against the teams that have big, physical front lines, it's a problem for us. . Sometimes it's the sheer size that's thrown up against us. It wears you down a little bit and it was evident tonight."

The Bucks pulled to 90-81 on Dalembert's free throws with 3:24 left, but he was called for goaltending on the next Jazz possession.

Utah was never threatened after that.

Milwaukee shot 35.4 percent (29 of 82) and just 6 of 19 from 3-point range. Mike Dunleavy had a particularly tough night, going 3 of 13 for 10 points.

"I couldn't put the ball in the basket," Dunleavy said.

He refused to use injuries as an excuse, noting that Utah is without starting point guard Mo Williams, backup Earl Watson and third-leading scorer Gordon Hayward.

"You have to deal with that during the course of the season," Dunleavy said. "It's no excuse. We had a lot of good looks that didn't go down and maybe took the wind out of our sails."

Utah led by 15 after three quarters as Milwaukee shot just 26.3 percent in the third. The Jazz kept the pressure on with Marvin Williams hitting a 3-pointer and DeMarre Carroll (11 points) scoring on a fast-break layup after Favors stuffed Dunleavy at the other end.

Early on, the Bucks looked as though they might be able to break through in Salt Lake City after losing 10 straight, their last win coming in October 2001.

They led by 12 in the first quarter, with Ilyasova having the hot hand early.

Kanter then took over in the second.

His three-point play gave Utah a 37-33 lead with 6:30 remaining in the half. Five of his six first-half field goals came after he grabbed an offensive rebound or loose ball and went up strong.

In 9 minutes in the first half, Kanter led all scorers with 13 points. He also had seven rebounds, two blocks and an assist as Utah led by as many as 12 in the second, 49-37.

"He is really embracing who he is and on this team the guys are really understanding who he is," Corbin said.

NOTES: Hall of Fame power forward Karl Malone reiterated during a radio show that he would like to help coach the Jazz players. Asked if that could happen, Corbin said, "Who knows?" but noted that he likes his current staff. ... Hayward (sprained right shoulder) missed his sixth straight game but has been taking shots during practice. ... Bucks F Marquis Daniels got the start over Luc Mbah a Moute, who did not dress because of a sore right knee. ... Dunleavy converted a four-point play with 11:10 left in the second after being fouled on a 3-pointer.

Notebook: Jazz 100, Bucks 86

THE FACTS: Against a shorthanded and tired opponent, the Utah Jazz showed no mercy on Wednesday night.

The Jazz took advantage of Larry Sanders' absence and Milwaukee having to play its second game in two nights at high altitude to defeat the Bucks 100-86. Utah's bigs had a heyday near the rim as Al Jefferson recorded 19 points and 11 rebounds and Paul Millsap had 19 points and six boards. Enes Kanter came off the bench to record 17 points, nine rebounds and a career-high five blocked shots.

Ersan Ilyasova and Brandon Jennings each scored 17 points for the Bucks, who couldn't hold on to a double-digit lead for the third straight time in a road game. Jennings scored 12 of his points and Ilyasova had 11 in the first half.

The Jazz have defeated the Bucks 11 straight times in Utah.

QUOTABLE: "I thought he was great. He was playing smarter, big inside. I thought he made some great moves on the offensive end to get some offensive rebounds, gave us some extra opportunities there. He made some great passes. It was great to see."

THE STAT: One can only wonder who wins in scrimmages between Utah's first team and second team, because the Jazz's bench continues to outshine the starters. Utah's bench scored 45 of the team's points and collected more than half of the team's rebounds (27 of 50). Milwaukee's bench scored 29 points, but 14 of them came in the fourth quarter with the game already decided.

TURNING POINT: The Jazz's bench started turning the game's momentum in their favor before and during a 21-4 run in the second quarter. Kanter gave Utah the biggest boost during its spurt that put the team ahead 49-37 with 2:01 left before halftime. He had seven points during the run, while Millsap contributed six. DeMarre Carroll also gave the Jazz a lift with his hustle, and Alec Burks continued to play proficiently as a fill-in point guard.

HOT: Burks has made the most of his playing time opportunities with Mo Williams, Earl Watson and Gordon Hayward sidelined by injuries. His shot selection has greatly improved, and he's shooting a better percentage. In his last five games, he's shot 6-for-8 from 3-point range. Kanter got a well-deserved rousing ovation when he left the game in the second quarter. He had 13 points and seven rebounds in just nine first-half minutes. Samuel Dalembert, after he had 35 points and 12 rebounds in 27 minutes against Denver on Tuesday, started against the Jazz and recorded 10 points and 11 rebounds.

NOT: Jazz starters continued their season-long trend of startling slowly. They scored 10 points and had five turnovers in the first nine minutes, spotting the Bucks an early 12-point lead. Jennings, after scoring 10 points in the first 10 minutes, fizzled the rest of the way. He shot 1-for-9 in the game's final three quarters. He also missed first straight four free-throw attempts to start the second half. The Bucks shot 11-for-21 during a blazing start in which they raced out to a 25-13 lead. They shot 18-for-61 (29.5 percent) the rest of the way. Mike Dunleavy shot just 3-for-13 for Milwaukee.

QUOTABLE II: "They just dominated us in the paint. Our guys battled, but they are a physical team. That's their strength. They took advantage of it. When we go up against the teams that have the big physical front line, it's a problem for us. Sometimes it's the sheer size that's thrown up against us. It wears you down a little bit and it was evident tonight."

GOOD MOVE: The Jazz, with their depth at point guard limited because of injuries and Milwaukee missing important frontcourt players, knew their way to win was to pound the Bucks inside. They did just that, taking advantage of a weakened Milwaukee inside game to record 56 points in the paint. Utah's points in the paint were important for both teams. The Jazz improved to 16-3 when they score at least 46 points in the paint. The Bucks fell to 7-15 when they allow 46 or more points in the paint.

BAD MOVE: The Bucks didn't utilize what seemed to be an enormous advantage at guard. Jennings and Monta Ellis probably should have had their way against Utah's aging Jamaal Tinsley and the inexperienced Burks. But after Milwaukee's fast start, the two guards stopped attacking. Fatigue may have been a factor for both players after playing in Denver and Utah back-to-back, but neither of them had much of an impact on the game after the first quarter.

NOTABLE: Sanders had to sit out after injuring his lower back against Denver on Tuesday night. His status is day-to-day. The Bucks were also without starting forward Luc Mbah a Moute, who was a late scratch. He did not dress because of a sore right knee. Marquis Daniels, after sitting out one game because of personal reasons, started in Mbah a Moute's place. The Jazz outscored the Bucks in second-chance points 31-10. The Bucks dropped to 0-13 when they score less than 89 points. With two 3-pointers, Randy Foye is now in second place in most 3-pointers made by a Jazzman in a single season. He has made 116 this season.
