Kevin Durant said his back is fine after he appeared to injure it in the Oklahoma City Thunder's last game.

Dirk Nowitzki looks set to return after missing the last two contests for the Dallas Mavericks.

Durant has been simply brilliant in two overtime victories over the Mavericks this season, and both superstars should be eager to meet in Monday night's matchup in Oklahoma City.

Oklahoma City (35-12) fell 115-110 at Cleveland on Saturday. Durant appeared to injure his lower back in the third quarter while hustling back on defense and left briefly, saying afterward he was fine.

Nowitzki, meanwhile, has endured an injury-plagued season in missing 27 games at the start after knee surgery. He returned to practice Sunday after missing the last two contests with a right adductor strain.

The German superstar has shown his rust in averaging 13.5 points on 26.7 percent shooting in two losses to Oklahoma City this season.

That hasn't been the case at all for Durant, who has averaged 46.0 points in the two wins, including a career-best 52 the last time these teams met in a 117-114 victory at Dallas (20-27) on Jan. 18.

Durant presents a tough matchup for a Dallas team allowing opponents to average 26.1 free throws for the Western Conference's worst mark. Durant is 31 for 31 at the line against the Mavs this season.

Russell Westbrook is averaging 23.5 points and 8.0 assists in the two victories for the Thunder, who have won eight straight in this series including last year's first-round sweep in the playoffs.

The Mavs will also have to worry about Serge Ibaka, who is averaging 15.5 rebounds against them to help the Thunder to a edge of 17 boards over the two games.

New Dallas point guard Darren Collison, a former UCLA teammate of Westbrook, is averaging a team-high 23.5 points in the season series.

Collison says it has been a learning experience in his first season playing for coach Rick Carlisle.

"Just because he's being hard on us or easy on us in a difficult way you can't take it too seriously," Collison said. "He's trying to make us better and help us become the players we need to be in this league and it's been good for me. I think we've had steady improvement."

The season series has been proof of how these teams differing fortunes in the clutch. The Thunder are 4-1 in overtime while the Mavs are 1-8.

Dallas will seek to salvage a split of a four-game trip after winning 109-99 over Phoenix on Friday. The backcourt of Collison and O.J. Mayo combined for 39 points as the Mavs used a 35-point fourth quarter to pull away.

The Thunder are happy to start a three-game homestand after playing 12 of their last 15 on the road. They have a bitter taste of the contest that ended that stretch as they blew a double-digit lead against the Cavaliers.

"We were up 12," Durant said. "We can't just come in and play nonchalant basketball. (When) we are up 12, we have to put them away."

Oklahoma City has won 13 straight at home against West foes.

Thunder scorch Mavericks 112-91

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) After two desperation shots and two overtime thrillers, the Oklahoma City Thunder were done playing close games against the Dallas Mavericks.

Russell Westbrook scored 24 points, Kevin Durant had 19 points and 10 rebounds, and Thunder blew out Dallas 112-91 Monday night while avoiding a third straight overtime game between the teams.

"The last time they came in here, they hit us in the mouth early," Durant said. "And I just told the guys that we've got to be the first hitter tonight and we've got to come out with a lot of energy, and I think we did that."

The Mavericks had tied the first two meetings this season with 3-pointers at the very end, but there was no such drama the third time around.

Oklahoma City led by at least 20 throughout the second half, winning for the 10th time in 11 meetings between the teams since Dallas beat the Thunder in the 2011 Western Conference finals on its way to the NBA championship. That includes a four-game sweep of the Mavs in the first round of last year's playoffs.

Shawn Marion was the lone bright spot for Dallas, hitting 10 of 14 shots and scoring 23 points. Dirk Nowitzki had 10 points on 3-for-11 shooting after missing the previous two games with a right adductor strain.

The Mavericks finished a four-game road trip 1-3, and now head home for their next five games - their second-longest stretch at the American Airlines Center.

"We don't have any excuses. At this point, that would be lame to blame it on that," said coach Rick Carlisle, who was denied in his first chance to earn his 500th career win. "We got two days of rest. We were in Phoenix for a couple days. Supposedly that air makes you feel better."

He said the absence of reserve Vince Carter, who was out sick and missed his first game all season, was a factor, but "we've got to play better, too."

"When you put these guys on the open floor with catastrophic turnovers, they're going to make you look bad. I think that was it more than anything," Carlisle said.

Kevin Martin chipped in 17 points off the bench for Oklahoma City, which rested its starters in the fourth quarter and got some playing time for seldom-used reserves Perry Jones III and Daniel Orton. The Thunder have alternated wins and losses for their past nine games, and have lost two in a row only once this season.

"A good team usually responds to losses like that. I remember we used to be like that," said Nowitzki, who's not used to being on a team struggling to contend for a playoff spot.

"We responded well," Durant said. "The toughest test is to see how we do the next game. It's easy to do it. ... We've got to see if we can sustain it and keep going the next game."

The Thunder charged ahead to stay after Darren Collison headed to the Mavericks' bench with his second foul, picked up while reaching in against Durant on a made jumper with 4:10 left in the first quarter. Martin had a two-handed, alley-oop dunk and a 3-pointer during a string of nine straight Oklahoma City points, and Hasheem Thabeet's short jumper to start the second quarter made it 31-22 Thunder.

Even when Collison - who had a season-high 32 points and hit a tying 3-pointer at the fourth-quarter buzzer in the teams' first meeting this season - returned, the Mavs could never stop Oklahoma City's momentum.

Collison checked back in and immediately committed a turnover that led to runout layup by Westbrook, and the Thunder kept rolling until their lead reached 27. Oklahoma City hit 12 of its first 16 shots in the second quarter and had outscored Dallas 21-1 on the fast break by the time Durant bounced a slick pass to Martin for a layup on a backdoor cut to make it 61-34.

"That always gets us in trouble when we turn the ball over. We're usually not very good when we can't go back and set our defense up. That really, for us, is a recipe for disaster," Nowitzki said.

"But even defensively when we had our defense set, we didn't get much going. They got whatever they wanted. They got 3s, they got layups, they got backdoor cuts. We were ball-watching. It was just an all-around tough game."

Once the lead got lopsided, tempers started to flare. Kendrick Perkins and O.J. Mayo had to be separated, and referee Ken Mauer issued a technical foul against Perkins after reviewing the play on video. The Thunder protested that Dallas players were using inflammatory language, but Mauer explained that he was limited to video - and not audio - on the replay.

Oklahoma City led by as many as 33 in the fourth quarter.

Notes: Durant tied for the NBA lead with his ninth technical foul of the season, gesturing at an official after he had a shot blocked in the third quarter. Perkins' technical was his seventh. Players are suspended one game if they receive 16 techs in a season. "I've just got to shut up. I'm racking them up. Sometimes I get too excited and I voice my opinion when I shouldn't. I've just got to shut up and play the game," Durant said. ... Carlisle said center Chris Kaman still had not been cleared to practice after sustaining a concussion a week ago. ... The Mavericks were averaging 20.1 fast-break points over a 10-game stretch before being held to six in a win at Phoenix on Friday and 11 against Oklahoma City. "We want to play fast all the time. We want to play fast and aggressive without being frantic and stupid," Carlisle said.

THE FACTS: The Oklahoma City Thunder came back home to Chesapeake Energy Arena in a surly mood after losing in Cleveland their last time out, taking out their frustrations on a short-handed Dallas Mavericks squad on Monday night. The Thunder led by as many as 33 and beat the Mavs for the ninth straight game, this time by a final score of 112-91.

Russell Westbrook led OKC (36-12) with 24 points on 8-for-16 shooting. Kevin Durant added 19 while pulling down 10 rebounds for his 11th double-double of the season. Kevin Martin pumped in 17 points and Serge Ibaka had 12. None of the Thunder starters played in the fourth quarter.

Dallas (20-28) played without center Chris Kaman, who is recovering from a concussion and Vince Carter, who'd averaged 19 points against the Thunder this season, was a last minute scratch because of illness. Carter's absence crippled the Mavs' bench. Shawn Marion had a season-high 23 points on 10-for-14 shooting. Dirk Nowitzki was back in the lineup after missing a couple of games with a sprained hip but he struggled from the floor, hitting just 3 of his 11 shots and scoring just 10 points. Jae Crowder also had 10 for the Mavs.

The first two games played by these teams this season went into overtime, but this one was over early with the Thunder zipping out to a big lead in the second quarter and cruising the rest of the way.

QUOTABLE: "The last couple weeks have been choppy at times for us, but one thing you can say about our guys -- our guys compete. They work very hard and they did that again tonight. No one on our team is perfect but you always see a lot of good effort."

THE STAT: In the second quarter the Thunder shot 73.7 percent (14-for-19) and held the Mavericks to just 39.1 percent shooting (9-for-23). The Thunder outscored Dallas 39-22 in the quarter, including 10-0 on the fast break, building a lead of 27 points.

TURNING POINT: The Thunder went on a 39-12 run from the last two minutes of the first quarter to the last two minutes of the second, blowing open a game that had been tied at 22. The run was sparked by the second unit which came in and clamped down on defense and forced Dallas into several turnovers.

QUOTABLE II: "When we substituted, we struggled. Not having Vince [Carter] out there was a big factor. We've got to play better too, that's where it's at."

QUOTABLE III: "I didn't think we had enough playmakers out there and we had some stupid turnovers, that always gets us in trouble. One time we couldn't even get the ball inbounds. Sometimes they swarmed us and that always gets us in trouble."

HOT: Dallas started out shooting 73.3 percent (11-for-15) in the first 10 minutes of the game...Marion was 4-for-5 in the first quarter. ... OKC shot 57.5 percent (23-for-40) in the first half. ... Durant (3-for-3), Westbrook (3-for-3) and Ibaka (2-for-2) were a combined 8-for-8 (26 points) in the second quarter. ... Marion was 4-for-5 in the third quarter. ... OKC was 9-for-10 on the fast break (25 points) through three quarters.

NOT: Durant and Westbrook were a combined 3-for-12 in the first quarter. ... Dallas was 0-for-6 on 3-pointers in the first half.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Olympic gold medalist in the 800 meters from 1968, Madeline Manning Mims, sang a rousing rendition of the National Anthem. Mrs. Mims is also a member of the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame and lives in Tulsa.

GOOD MOVE: Brooks said before the game "we've gotta play better defense," coming off a poor second half performance in Cleveland. However, the starters didn't have much defensive energy at the beginning of the game allowing Dallas to shoot over 70 percent in the first 10 minutes. Brooks brought his second unit in and that did the trick as the Mavs went 0-for-6 and turned the ball over once in the last two minutes of the first quarter.

BAD MOVE: Durant leads the Thunder in several different categories including one he'd rather not, technical fouls. Durant picked up his ninth Technical of the season tonight for arguing a call. Coming into this season, Durant had only been whistled for 12 Technicals in his entire career.

NOTABLE: The 68 first half points scored by Oklahoma City are the most given up by Dallas in a first half this season and ties for the most scored by the Thunder. OKC also scored 68 first half points against the Rockets on December 29th. ... Oklahoma City is now 11-1 in games following losses this season and 46-10 in those situations over the last three seasons.
