Philadelphia 76ers coach Doug Collins has done his best patching together lineups with the team generally struggling without a couple key players.

As a result, players like Nick Young are beginning to embrace their roles.

Philadelphia reaches the halfway point of an eight-game homestand Friday night as it seeks an eighth victory in nine meetings with the Sacramento Kings.

Andrew Bynum has yet to play for the 76ers (19-26) due to a right knee injury after being acquired in the Dwight Howard trade, and Jason Richardson is likely to miss a sixth straight game Friday because of a left knee problem.

Collins has started Young the last three games in place of Richardson and has given him increased minutes in the past six. Young is averaging 17.8 points over the last four, including 18 in Wednesday's 92-84 win over Washington as Philadelphia improved to 2-1 on its homestand.

Dorell Wright had seven points and seven rebounds in 16 minutes after not playing the previous two games.

"It's been a challenge, to say the least, to try to get the pieces to fit," said Collins, who has started 11 different players. "I thank them for their professionalism. It's very easy for guys who have been in the league a long time like that to just pack it in, and neither one of them did that."

Young was benched for a win over Houston on Jan. 12, providing him with the motivation to contribute in any way he's asked.

"That DNP, it hurt," Young said. "Sitting on the sideline, I don't want to get back to that. I'm starting to buy into what the coaches are talking about."

Collins has noticed the difference.

"He has really listened as we've tried to teach," Collins said. "He has talent. I knew if he focused, he could be a terrific player. He's earned the respect of his teammates and coaches."

The Sixers haven't won back-to-back games since a season high-tying three-game winning streak Nov. 25-30. They'll try to do so against a Sacramento team they've beaten by an average of 18.4 points over their last seven victories in the series.

The Kings' only win in the past eight meetings came in overtime.

They enter this one having dropped five of six, with the defeats coming by an average of 14.8 points. They're allowing an average of 106.5 points in that span and rank near the bottom of the league at 103.1 per game for the season.

Sacramento (17-30) is 1-2 on a six-game road trip after falling 99-81 at Boston on Wednesday. Tyreke Evans had 19 points and 11 rebounds but also committed four of the Kings' 19 turnovers, about their average (18.6) in the last five games.

"We were lackadaisical," said rookie Thomas Robinson, who scored 11 points off the bench.

Philadelphia has been outrebounded in six of its last seven games, though it seemingly has a good opportunity to win that battle against a Sacramento team that ranks among the league's worst with a minus-3.5 rebound differential per game.

"We're as good as our big men play," Collins said. "When they play well, we can play with most every team. People are going to try and attack us in the paint because without Andrew Bynum we're a small team."

Kings center DeMarcus Cousins, though, has averaged 10.5 points and 5.0 rebounds over the last four games. He has no double-doubles in that span after a stretch in which he posted six straight, averaging 21.7 points and 13.3 boards.

76ers pull away late to beat Kings 89-80

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Make it a double for the Philadelphia 76ers. Yes, the Sixers really can string together a winning streak.

Thaddeus Young had 23 points and 15 rebounds, and Jrue Holiday scored 21 to lead the Philadelphia 76ers to an 89-80 win over the Sacramento Kings on Friday night.

Nick Young scored 20 points to help the Sixers win consecutive games for the first time since they had a three-game winning streak from Nov. 25-30.

"Two in a row. Finally," coach Doug Collins said.

It was a long wait for the Sixers - 62 days since they last went 2 for 2. The Sixers beat Washington and the Kings this week for the rare winning streak. The Sixers won for only the fifth time in 14 games and eighth in 25.

The Sixers beat Phoenix, Dallas and Charlotte in the last three games of November the last time they had a streak. They go for three straight Monday against Orlando.

"We're just coming out with all kinds of energy," Nick Young said. "We made that one of our priorities. But when we get up, we've got to keep the lead."

The Sixers blew a 17-point lead in a loss to Memphis on Monday night and nearly wasted a 19-point cushion against the Kings.

Early in the fourth, Thomas took advantage of Nick Young's foul on his 3-point attempt, sinking all three from the free-throw line and giving the Kings their first lead of the game, 73-72.

Thaddeus Young, their most valuable player this season behind Holiday, pushed back the Kings with consecutive jumpers that sparked a 10-0 run and put the Sixers back in control. Nick Young's three-point play made it a 12-point game and the Sixers had a double-digit lead they would not waste.

The Sixers had two five-game losing streaks since they last won back-to-back games.

"I guess we like to make it hard on ourselves," Holiday said.

Tyreke Evans scored 29 points and Isaiah Thomas had 24 for the Kings. DeMarcus Cousins had 12 points and 12 rebounds. The Kings have lost six of seven and fell to 1-3 on a six-game road trip.

"We've got great talent, we know we can play with anybody," Evans said. "We've just got to be ready every night."

So in control in third, the Kings missed 11 of their first 12 shots in the fourth, costing them their chance at their biggest comeback win of the season.

The Kings started running in the third - and nearly ran away with a big rally. Cousins and Evans did most of the damage, hitting short jumpers around the basket or dunking the Kings from the big deficit to only five down. Spencer Hawes made an ill-advised pass into the paint that was picked by Francisco Garcia and fed to a streaking Evans for a dunk, cutting it to 66-63.

Evans scored 13 points in the third and Thomas had 10 that whipped an 18-point hole early in the quarter to only a 72-68 game at the end.

Cousins, averaging a double-double on the season, had gone the last four games without one. Evans and Thomas combined to shot 18 for 36 from the floor. But Kings missed nine of 10 3-point attempts and had no answer for Thaddeus Young on the boards.

The Kings made 11 of 20 shots in the third, only to miss 15 of 18 in the fourth, hardly a recipe for victory.

"We got back into the game, but didn't control it," Kings coach Keith Smart said.

The Sixers continued their run of fast starts, making 12 of 20 shots to open the game and build a lead they would keep until the early fourth. Thaddeus Young and Holiday each scored 13 in the first half to help the Sixers stretch the lead to 19 and take a 54-39 lead into halftime.

"Sometimes the game comes too easy, you start missing shots, and before you know it, they're back in the game," Nick Young said.

Notes: 76ers G Damien Wilkins returned to the team after a brief absence for personal reasons. ... 76ers G Jason Richardson sat out again with an injured left knee. ... THE FACTS: Thaddeus Young scored 23 points and tied his career high with 15 rebounds as the Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Sacramento Kings 89-80 Friday night at the Wells Fargo Center. Jrue Holiday scored 21 points, Nick Young had 20 and Spencer Hawes 10 for the Sixers (20-26), who won consecutive games for the first time since a three-game streak from Nov. 25-30.

Tyreke Evans led the Kings with 29 points while Isaiah Thomas contributed 24. DeMarcus Cousins had 12 points and 12 rebounds. The Kings (17-31) fell to 5-19 on the road.

QUOTABLE: "It's a good win for us. We'll take it and try to go get the next game."

THE STAT: The Kings shot 3-for-18 overall, and 0-for-3 from beyond the arc, in the fourth quarter. They managed just 12 points in the fourth after mounting a huge comeback to take a short-lived one-point lead.

TURNING POINT: After the Kings rallied from 19 down to take a 73-72 lead, the Sixers came right back with a 10-0 run to go ahead 82-73. The Sixers have had trouble holding leads all season, but on this night, they wouldn't allow the Kings to make one last surge.

HOT: Thaddeus Young was 11-for-17 and Holiday knocked down nine of his 17 shots.

NOT: Jason Thompson was 3-for-9, John Salmons was 1-for-7 and Francisco Garcia misfired on all three of his shots in 20:25 off the bench for the Kings.

QUOTABLE II: "We sure don't make anything easy."

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Thaddeus Young had 23 points, 15 rebounds, two assists and two steals. For the Kings, Thomas was solid throughout with 24 points, five assists, four rebounds and one steal. Thomas also was 10-for-10 from the free-throw line.

INSIDE THE ARENA: The crowd of 17,927 was relatively quiet for much of the game. That is, until the Sixers let a 19-point lead dissipate early in the fourth. From there, the fans responded and the buzz could be felt throughout the arena.

QUOTABLE III: "As far as our effort, we played good. We never gave up."

GOOD MOVE: Thaddeus Young was a force in the paint all game and the Sixers kept going to him. They did a very good job of recognizing that Young could score at will in the paint against the Kings, who had no answer for the lanky forward's variety of moves.

BAD MOVE: The Kings settled for far too many jump shots. Cousins only had three free-throw attempts, which is not nearly enough. As an aside, he missed all three of those shots.

ROOKIE WATCH: Kings forward Thomas Robinson was scoreless with two rebounds in 6:34. For the Sixers, forward Arnett Moultrie received a DNP-CD.

NOTABLE: Sixers guard Jason Richardson missed his fifth straight game with left knee synovitis. Richardson traveled to Colorado for a second opinion and there is no immediate timetable for his return. ... Sacramento forward James Johnson was active but didn't play because of an illness. ... The Kings have dropped six of its last seven games. ... Thaddeus Young registered his 12th double-double of the season. He had just one all of last season. It's the third time that Young had at least 20 points and 14 rebounds. That's the most games in a single season by a Philadelphia player since Chris Webber did it seven times in 2005-06. ... Cousins picked up a technical foul with 2:12 left in the third. It was his 10th technical of the season. ... Sixers forward Evan Turner also got a technical with 11:14 remaining in the third. ... The Sixers committed 20 turnovers and had 20 assists. ... Nick Young is averaging 18.2 points over the last five games.
