Kings-Celtics Preview

WALTHAM, Mass. (AP) - Boston Celtics star Paul Pierce showed up for his pre-practice meeting with reporters carrying a basketball, which he bounced from time to time while answering questions.

Get used to it: Pierce will have the ball in his hands a lot more from now on.

Two days after learning that Rajon Rondo has a torn knee ligament that will keep him out the rest of the season, the Celtics returned to practice Tuesday for the first time to work on an extended future without the All-Star point guard. Pierce is the most likely player to handle the ball at key points, starting with Wednesday night's visit from the Sacramento Kings, but coach Doc Rivers says everyone will have to work to replace Rondo.

"It's just basketball," he said. "There's no point guard. It's just basketball by committee. I don't want a guy thinking now he's Rondo."

Rondo was averaging 13.7 points, a league-best 11.1 assists and 5.6 rebounds, with triple-doubles in back-to-back games when he was scratched from Sunday's visit from defending champion Miami. He was sent to the hospital to check on what the team believed was a hyperextended right knee.

The actual diagnosis: A torn anterior cruciate ligament that required surgery and a recovery period of up to a year.

"Everybody was in a fog almost," center Kevin Garnett said. "I think it's kind of settling in and I think everybody is trying to put their arms around the concept that he's actually hurt, hurt to the point where he can't play. That's what had everybody in a fog, even him.

"He came in this morning and seeing him in there was kind of unreal. The fact that it is real, everybody is going to consolidate and pick up the pieces and try to carry this thing."

Rondo was injured in a double-overtime loss to Atlanta on Friday night, a game in which the Celtics blew a 27-point lead. Despite playing without their floor leader Sunday - players didn't know the extent of the injury until after the game - they beat the Heat in double overtime to improve to 21-23, and now lead Philadelphia by 2 1/2 games for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Rivers said he isn't sure who will bring the ball up the court against the Kings - it will probably change from game to game depending on what the opponent is doing - but once the offense is set up he will expect everyone to be involved.

That's the way the Celtics played against Miami on Sunday. Now they need to do it the rest of the season.

"It's a no-point-guard system," Rivers said, noting that his second unit has been playing that way all season. "Now the entire team needs to do it. We have a lot of guards. We just don't have a lot of point guards."

Rivers said Courtney Lee, who has been averaging 7.2 points and 1.4 assists in 22 minutes, will start for now. Leandro Barbosa, Avery Bradley, Jeff Green and Jason Terry will also have the ball more without Rondo on the floor.

"I don't know if that's a role I'm going to have," said Barbosa, who backed up Steve Nash in Phoenix and is averaging 4.7 points in 11 minutes in his first season with the Celtics. "I'm not Rajon Rondo; I'm Leandro Barbosa. What I'm going to do is different for the team.

"I will do my best, but I'm not a point guard; I'm a shooting guard. I will do my best, but I'm not a Rajon Rondo."

Rondo was fairly invisible the last two times Boston faced the Kings (17-29), totaling six points on 3-of-15 shooting in a pair of blowout losses. He was thoroughly outplayed by Isaiah Thomas on Dec. 30 in Sacramento, as Thomas had 27 points and DeMarcus Cousins recorded his first career triple-double (12 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists) in a 118-96 Kings win.

Cousins has struggled lately, averaging 9.7 points, 4.7 boards and 4.0 turnovers in his last three games, but Thomas rescued Sacramento on Monday at Washington. He had 10 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter, the last of which came on a floater with 1 second left that gave the Kings a 96-94 win.

"I don't think we turned the ball over as much and we got the stops when we needed them," Thomas said. "We dialed in on the defensive end and got stops, especially in the last couple of minutes."

The Kings allowed only 37 points after halftime, well below their Western Conference-worst average of 50.3 in the second half.

Sacramento has lost all four visits to the TD Garden since Garnett arrived in Boston for the 2007-08 season.

Pierce leads Celtics to 99-81 win over Kings

BOSTON (AP) The Celtics lost Rajon Rondo for the season. They haven't lost since.

Boston improved to 2-0 since Rondo's season-ending knee injury with a 99-81 win over the Sacramento Kings as Paul Pierce led a balanced attack with 16 points Wednesday night.

Now the Celtics know they can be successful, in the short term anyway, without the player chosen as the starting point guard for the Eastern Conference in next month's All-Star game.

"It's always nice to get off to a start like this," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said.

Rondo was injured late in a 123-112, double-overtime loss to the Atlanta Hawks last Friday night. Boston won another double-overtime game on Sunday, 100-98 over the Miami Heat, breaking a six-game losing streak, their longest in six seasons. An MRI taken that day showed that Rondo had torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

No single player can replace his NBA-leading 11.1 assists per game. But four Celtics had at least three assists on Wednesday as the Celtics totaled 22, just under their average of 23.1 entering the game.

"It has to come from a number of people," said Pierce, who had 10 rebounds and four assists. "A lot of people have opportunities to step up. The way we move the ball, the way we spread the court, that's the way we need to play. Nobody had the ball for more than a couple of seconds."

Playing one of the NBA's worst teams certainly made that easier as six Celtics scored at least 11 points.

The Kings (17-30) began the night allowing a league worst 103.2 points per game and fell to 5-18 on the road. But they did beat the Celtics 118-96 in Sacramento on Dec. 30.

"We were more lackadaisical today," Kings rookie forward Thomas Robinson said.

Tyreke Evans had 19 points and 11 rebounds and DeMarcus Cousins scored 13 for the Kings, who were competitive most of the game, except for being outscored 37-14 in the second quarter.

"The (Celtics) bench came in, pushed the game to another level," Kings coach Keith Smart said. "You have to make up so much ground from that second quarter."

The Celtics improved to 22-23 and maintained their three-game lead over the Philadelphia 76ers for the final playoff spot in the East.

They scored the first eight points of the game, but a driving dunk by Evans gave the Kings their only lead, 24-22, with 15.9 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Then the Celtics hit their first 14 shots of the second. By the time Avery Bradley missed, a layup with 2:29 left in the half, the Celtics had built a 54-36 lead.

"I didn't know that," Rivers said. "That's how we have to play overall, just simple, good basketball. Pass the ball. Move the ball."

Boston's dominance was so thorough that its bench made 15 of 21 shots in the first half while Sacramento's entire team went just 14 for 40.

"The responsibilities of Rondo are going to be consolidated through everybody," said Kevin Garnett, who had 13 points, nine rebounds and a team-high five assists. "Five guys that were on the floor at any time were aggressive and that's what it's going to take."

Boston had an impressive 16 assists in the first half, even without Rondo. Garnett scored 11 points and Green had 10 as each hit all five of his shots before intermission.

The Celtics charged to a 59-38 halftime lead as they hit 62.5 percent of their shots. They led by at least 14 points the rest of the way.

Boston won despite losing another starter when forward Jared Sullinger left just over four minutes into the game with back spasms and didn't return. Sullinger was drafted 21st last year by the Celtics, but might have gone higher if he hadn't suffered back problems at Ohio State.

"Hopefully, he doesn't miss games," Rivers said.

The Celtics led 80-56 before layups by Robinson and Evans cut that to 80-60 after three quarters. A three-point play by Cousins made it 90-76 with 5:44 remaining, but the Kings came no closer.

Substitutes Brandon Bass, Jeff Green and Jason Terry had 12 points each for Boston. Courtney Lee started in place of Rondo and finished with nine points and three assists.

But the Celtics will have much tougher opponents than the Kings.

"Everyone always says when you lose a star player, you have other guys step up and you have ball movement," Smart said. "But, obviously, your superstars win the close, tough games, and that's what you'll miss with Rondo - the guy that can win a ballgame when the game is tight against a heavy-hitting opponent."

Notes: The Celtics have two games left in their four-game homestand, against the Orlando Magic on Friday night and the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday. ... Garnett played in his 1,300th NBA game. ... The Kings had just 13 assists.

THE FACTS: The Boston Celtics shot 63 percent in the first half, which allowed them to pull away early and cruise to a 99-81 win over the Sacramento Kings. It was the second straight win for the Celtics (22-23) without All-Star Rajon Rondo, who is sidelined for the season with a torn ACL. Without their floor general, Boston relied on ball movement and a balanced offensive effort. Six players finished in double figures, led by Paul Pierce (16 points, 10 rebounds). Tyreke Evans had 19 points for the Kings (17-30), who have now dropped five of their last six games.

QUOTABLE: "That's how we have to play, overall. Just simple, good basketball; pass the ball, move the ball. I thought everybody just played their role and played great."

THE STAT: The Celtics hit their first 14 shot attempts of second quarter, and finished the frame shooting a sizzling 80 percent (16-for-20) from the field, which resulted in a 37-point outburst in the period.

TURNING POINT: After trailing by two at the end of the first quarter, the Celtics came out in the second quarter and played nearly flawless basketball on both sides of the floor. Boston opened the first six minutes of the frame on a 24-7 run against a Kings squad that provided little resistance on the defensive end of the floor, building a double-digit lead they would not relinquish.

QUOTABLE II: "It's been an adjustment for me playing in this system, but I'm getting more and more comfortable. And, again, with this style that we're playing now, I think it's a little more conducive to my game."

HOT: Terry -- Boston's sixth man broke out of a shooting slump in January to hit an efficient five of his seven shot attempts, including both attempts from downtown. He finished with 12 points in 22 minutes.

NOT: Isaiah Thomas -- Facing some feisty defense from childhood friend Avery Bradley, Thomas failed to find easy opportunities at the rim and on the perimeter. The point guard missed 8 of his 10 shots, while scoring just eight points on the evening, three below his season average.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Evans -- The fourth-year guard finished with his first double-double of the season and added two assists and three steals to his 19 points and 11 rebounds. Evans has now scored in double digits in nine of his past ten games.

QUOTABLE III: "If you look at the rest of the game, we played a pretty decent game, but we couldn't make up for that ground we gave up in the second quarter."

ROOKIE WATCH: Thomas Robinson -- The fifth overall pick of the 2012 NBA Draft continues to put together the strongest month of his career, as he posted 11 points and four rebounds in the setback. Those 11 points are one short of his career high and Robinson's fifth double-digit scoring effort of the month.

NOTABLE: Jared Sullinger left the game in the first quarter with back spasms. He did not return. Sullinger dealt with chronic back problems throughout his college career. ... The Celtics improved to 4-3 without Rondo this season. ... With the victory, Boston and Sacramento split the season series. ...Kings dropped to 11-11 against the Eastern Conference. ...
