Clippers-Warriors Preview

It was easy to look at the Pacific Division prior to the season and picture an intense rivalry developing involving the Los Angeles Clippers.

It was a bit harder to imagine the other team being the Golden State Warriors.

The Clippers look to salvage a split of their season series with the Warriors and extend their latest winning streak to five Monday as they try for a rare victory in Oakland.

Most expected the Lakers-Clippers rivalry to flourish as Vinny Del Negro's team continued its rise as a contender, but instead the Lakers are floundering in 11th place in the West while the Clippers (32-9) are in a tight battle for the conference's top spot.

The team closest to the Clippers in the division is Golden State (24-15), which has handed the Clippers two of their losses. The Warriors won 114-110 at Staples Center on Nov. 3 and rolled to a 115-94 rout on Jan. 2 before falling 115-89 in L.A. three days later.

"The first time they beat us here, you would have thought they won the NBA finals," point guard Chris Paul said after Los Angeles' win, explaining the Clippers' energy level despite playing their fourth game in five nights.

Los Angeles led by as many as 39 points in that victory, something that didn't sit well with Warriors coach Mark Jackson. Jackson became so frustrated at one point late in the third quarter after an alley-oop dunk by a giddy DeAndre Jordan, he came onto the court and glared at the Clippers' bench as they celebrated during the ensuing timeout.

Some of them stared back.

"It was just a good old-fashioned heavyweight championship staredown. That's all," Jackson said. "But they earned the right to celebrate, the way they played. So what you've got to do as a coach or as a player is just let it soak in and remember it. That's all. Mark it down with permanent ink."

Los Angeles won that meeting without sixth man Jamal Crawford, who combined for 51 points in the two losses against Golden State. Paul, though, has averaged 25.7 points in the season series after putting up 27 on 10-of-12 shooting in that win.

Paul missed the team's perfect three-game road trip with a bruised right knee, but helped engineer yet another victory Saturday in his return. The six-time All-Star had 22 points and 11 assists in a 94-87 win over Washington as the Clippers overcame 36.6 percent shooting with 22 offensive rebounds.

"That's how we won the game - with offensive rebounding," Paul said. "It was cool to be back. I feel like it's been the longest week, sitting out three games. But I still need to get my timing back and get it through my head that I can play."

Golden State got point guard Stephen Curry back after he missed two games with an ankle injury but didn't have forward David Lee (sprained ankle).

Curry had 20 points, but Klay Thompson and Jarrett Jack made the difference Saturday at New Orleans. Thompson had a season-high 29 points while Jack added 25 points and 12 assists off the bench in a 116-112 win.

"He was special," Jackson said of Jack.

Curry was special in the Warriors' home win against the Clippers earlier this month, finishing with 31 points and eight assists while Lee added 24 points, 13 boards and seven assists.

It's uncertain if Lee, who has averaged 23.0 points and 12.7 boards in his last three home games versus Los Angeles, will play Monday.

The Clippers could use any break they can get. They've surrendered 109.4 points per game in losing 12 of 14 in Oakland.

Curry scores 28 in Warriors win over Clippers

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Stephen Curry took some good-natured ribbing from his Golden State teammates following an impromptu celebration near the bench late in fourth quarter against Los Angeles.

Few teams have caused more problems this season for the Pacific Division leaders than the Warriors, and Curry has been a major reason why.

Curry made four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and Golden State rallied from seven points down in the final 11 minutes to beat the Clippers 106-99 on Monday.

"When you start to talk about elite point guards in this league ... as far as shooting the long ball, Stef is by far the best at his position," said Jarrett Jack, who had 18 points and 10 assists off the bench for the Warriors. "Playing with him on a regular basis I've got a better appreciation for him. When he's able to get hot like he did, it serves our offense that much more."

Curry finished with 28 points and is averaging 23.0 points in four games against the Clippers this season.

That's a key to why the Warriors have won three of those games and are the only team to beat Los Angeles more than once this year.

"That means you're beating a good team and you're stepping up for big games," said Curry, who went 6 of 8 from beyond the arc. "To win three out of four and continue playing the good ball that we've been playing, that's just a good sign for us."

Curry stayed mostly silent for three quarters in his second game back from an ankle injury but gave the Warriors a much-needed spark in the fourth after the Clippers had taken an 82-75 lead.

He scored 16 points, including three 3s in a span of 2:13, fired a bounce pass from midcourt to Jack for a fast-break layup that capped a 10-2 run and made four free throws over the final 23.4 seconds to seal the win in what has quickly become a heated rivalry between these two West Coast teams.

Things got chippy just before halftime when the Clippers' DeAndre Jordan was called for a technical foul after shoving David Lee into the lap of a courtside fan after getting fouled by Lee. The two men were quickly separated and Klay Thompson made the free throw for Golden State.

Curry further frustrated the Clippers after his 3-pointer in the fourth quarter gave the Warriors an 88-86 lead. Curry raised his arms in the air, pumped his right fist emphatically then galloped down the court. He started dancing after making another 3 later in the quarter.

The Clippers took notice.

"That's a young team that's improving, for sure, but we have our sights set on trying to play in June," said Los Angeles guard Jamal Crawford. "I'm not saying they don't. But we're looking at bigger goals than celebrating everything."

Los Angeles regained its composure long enough to put together a 12-0 run to end the third quarter and was comfortably up in the fourth before Curry rallied the Warriors to end the Clippers' four-game winning streak.

There were five lead changes in the fourth quarter, but Los Angeles managed only two baskets over the final 3:40 while Golden State closed on a 14-4 run.

Blake Griffin had 26 points and 13 rebounds for the Clippers. Crawford added 24 points off the bench.

Chris Paul, playing in his second game after sitting out three with a knee injury, had just four points on 1 of 7 shooting. After the game, Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro said the team would reevaluate Paul's status before clearing him to play against Oklahoma City on Tuesday.

"You could see he doesn't have that extra burst like he usually has," Del Negro said. "It's nice to have him out there because he settles everything down. It's just that he can't play at the level he's used to with the injury."

Klay Thompson scored 18 points and Lee had 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Warriors.

Golden State (25-15) has won back-to-back games for the first time since the end of December and still trail Los Angeles by six games in the Pacific. The Clippers (32-10) lost for just the second time in nine games.

The flurry at the end was in stark contrast to earlier in the game when neither team could establish much control.

Griffin's thunderous dunk from just outside the lane gave the Clippers an early lead and Crawford later scored eight consecutive points to make it 33-29. Draymond Green's jumper and two free throws from Jarrett Jack with 0.4 seconds left tied the score.

The Warriors scored 10 straight points to open the second and went up 52-42 on Curry's fadeaway jumper with 3:10 remaining before the Clippers put together their best run of the half. Griffin scored on a reverse layup and had two free throws, Butler made a 3-pointer and Paul added two free throws to help pull Los Angeles to 53-52 at the break.

Crawford, the former Warrior, got Los Angeles going briefly in the third.

After Lee's layup put Golden State up 71-65, Crawford made two 3-pointers and banked a 5-footer off the glass as part of a 15-2 run to close the period.

Crawford finished 9 of 18 from the floor and set a season high for 3s (six) while Caron Butler added 19 points and five rebounds for Los Angeles.

The Clippers went up 82-75 on a reverse layup by Matt Barnes with 10:49 left but couldn't make the lead hold up.

NOTES: Injured Warriors C Andrew Bogut ran full-court sprints before the game, an important step in his rehab from his left. The 7-footer has not played since Nov. 7 and has missed 36 games overall this season. Golden State coach Mark Jackson, however, isn't putting a timetable on Bogut's return. "We've got to keep it moving and look forward to having him one day, whenever that comes," Jackson said. "I, like Dr. King, have a dream." ... Del Negro opted to hold F Grant Hill in order to rest him for Tuesday's game against Oklahoma City. ... The Warriors announced that F Brandon Rush underwent successful surgery on his injured left knee on Jan. 16. Rush has been out for the season since Nov. 2.

THE FACTS: Stephen Curry scored 16 of his game-high 28 points in the fourth quarter, leading the Golden State Warriors back from a seven-point deficit in the final period to a secure a 106-99, season-series-clinching victory against the Los Angeles Clippers Monday.

The Warriors (25-15) outscored the Clippers 33-19 in the final period to finish up 3-1 against Los Angeles (32-10), which came into the game tied with Oklahoma City for the league's best record. It was Golden State's third win in four games against the Clippers this season; and the Warriors are the only team to beat Los Angeles more than once this season.

Jarrett Jack recorded his third consecutive double-double for the first time in his eight-year NBA career, notching 18 points, 10 assists and six rebounds. With Jack manning the point in the fourth quarter, Curry was freed up to fire from the perimeter, and he drained all four 3-point shots in the period to cut short the Clippers' winning streak at four games.

Blake Griffin's 26-point, 13-rebound, eight-assist performance went by the boards as the Clippers allowed 11 fast break points in the fourth quarter to fuel Golden State's comeback.

QUOTABLE: "As far as shooting the long ball, Steph [Curry] is by far the best at his position. Playing with him on a regular basis, I've had a better appreciation for him as a player. . . . I didn't know how talented this kid was. It's really a joy to watch him mature and grow into the player he has become today."

THE STAT: Curry was 9-for-14 from the floor, 6-for-8 on 3-point attempts, rebounding from a 5-for-17 night in New Orleans on Saturday when he came back from a one-game absence with a sprained right ankle. Curry has hit 53.7 percent of his treys this month as he continues to pull up his field-goal percentage after a cold start to the season.

TURNING POINT: The Warriors and Clippers have generated a budding rivalry this season, with both sides taking exception at various points to the antics of the opposition. Perhaps that's why Curry celebrated with such abandon when he curled around a down screen and popped out on the right wing to drain a 3-pointer with 1:26 left to give the Warriors a 99-95 lead. Curry reacted with a slow-motion gallop back down the court as the Clippers -- who never got back within a single bucket -- called timeout and the Oracle Arena crowd of 19,596, a 10th consecutive Warriors sellout, went nuts.

QUOTABLE II: "We're one of the top teams in the NBA, so I guess there's a target on our back, and we're in the [same] division. That's a young team that's improving, for sure, but we have our sights set on trying to play in June. I'm not saying they don't, but we're looking at bigger goals than celebrating everything."

GOOD MOVE: It's become standard operating procedure for the Warriors when both players are healthy, but the success Golden State had in the fourth quarter Monday with Jack initiating the offense and Curry coming off screens showed exactly why coach Mark Jackson loves the pairing so much. Jack had 10 points and three assists in the period and Curry rubbed off his defenders with abandon, dropping three dimes of his own when the Clippers' defense did manage to run him off the 3-point line.

HOT: Crawford did his best to outduel Curry. He sparked a 12-0 run to end the third quarter with five of his 24 points on the day, although his miss on a 10-footer at the 1:46 mark represented the Clippers' last chance to take the lead.

NOT: Chris Paul, playing for just the second time after a three-game absence due to a bruised right kneecap, was clearly unable to bring his usual All-Star presence to bear on proceedings. He went 1-for-7 with for a season-low four points in 33 minutes. Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro said Paul would be evaluated Tuesday in advance of L.A.'s top-of-the-standings showdown against Oklahoma City, with his minutes under close scrutiny even if he does play.

QUOTABLE III: "I'm just mad because I feel like we let a game get away. I didn't feel like I could do what I wanted to do. Me being out there probably hurt us more than it helped us, and I feel bad in that regard."

NOTABLE: Warriors forward David Lee returned from a sprained left ankle to give the Warriors 12 points, 11 rebounds and six assists. It was his 25th double-double of the season. . . . The Clippers are now 27-2 when leading after three quarters. Both such losses are to the Warriors. But L.A. didn't put much stock into the notion that Golden State represents a bad potential playoff matchup or a budding rivalry. "Nah, it's cool. I'm not worried about it, by no means," Paul said. "I don't think about them too much, to tell you the truth. Let them do what they do."
