Trail Blazers-Nuggets Preview

The Denver Nuggets have struggled to put together full 48-minute efforts, but their strong fourth quarters are getting the job done.

It's been more than five years since the Portland Trail Blazers did enough to leave Denver with a win.

The Nuggets will try to extend their longest win streak of the season to six on Tuesday night when the cold-shooting Blazers go for just their third road victory in this matchup since 1999.

The Nuggets (23-16) have trailed by at least 10 in each of their last three games, yet they continue to win with clutch play in the final period. They've outscored their opponents by an average of 9.8 in the fourth quarter since their last defeat.

Denver outscored Golden State 37-18 in the final 12 minutes of Sunday's 116-105 victory to improve to 14-2 at home.

"We played to our strength in the fourth quarter and turned up the defense," coach George Karl told the Nuggets' official website. "I'd like to see our defense start a little bit earlier than that, but I'll take the wins."

The Nuggets, who last won six straight Jan. 17-27, will go for an eighth consecutive home win over Portland (20-17) and 23rd in its last 25 visits.

The Blazers, losers of two straight following a 12-3 stretch, could find it difficult to win in Denver for the first time since Dec. 16, 2007, if they don't break their string of three consecutive games shooting 38.0 percent or worse.

Outside of LaMarcus Aldridge, who hit 15 of 26 attempts and scored a season-best 33, the Blazers shot 26.7 percent (16 of 60) in Sunday's 87-83 home loss to Oklahoma City.

"Shooting percentages usually even themselves out but I'll give credit to the defense in the last three games (against Miami, Golden State and the Thunder)," coach Terry Stotts told the Trail Blazers' official website after the team's 9-0 run in Portland ended.

Denver could be another tough matchup as it's among the NBA leaders in field goal defense at 43.4 percent. The visiting Nuggets held Portland to 35.9 percent from the field Dec. 20, but they lost 101-93 after missing all 22 3-point attempts to set a league record for most attempts without a make.

The Nuggets might struggle to approach the 74 points in the paint they scored in that game as Aldridge sat out with an ankle injury, but they could still enjoy a big edge down low. Denver leads the NBA with 46.4 rebounds and 55.9 points in the paint per game, while Portland is averaging 41.7 and 35.6.

There's really no comparison between these Northwest Division foes when it comes to bench production. Sparked by the return of Wilson Chandler, who scored 14 points in his first game since Nov. 12, the Nuggets' reserves outscored the Warriors' bench 48-19 on Sunday.

Denver's backups are averaging 38.4 points.

"It helps knowing that come playoff time, we have depth and guys who can step up, especially when somebody has a bad night," forward Kenneth Faried said.

The Blazers don't enjoy that depth behind Aldridge, Nicolas Batum, J.J. Hickson, Wesley Matthews and rookie Damian Lillard, with their bench average a league-worst 16.9 points.

That unit was outscored 48-27 by Denver's reserves last month.

Chandler lifts Nuggets over Blazers 115-111 in OT

DENVER (AP) Wilson Chandler admitted feeling a bit winded and tired in his second game back from hip problems that had sidelined him for two months. Not enough to bother his shooting touch, though.

Chandler hit a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 14.9 seconds remaining in overtime, and the Denver Nuggets beat the Portland Trail Blazers 115-111 Tuesday night for their season-best sixth consecutive victory.

"The way the game was going for me, I was a little fatigued," said Chandler, who had a labral tear in his left hip repaired last spring and then had to take time off in early November when pain resurfaced in the surgically-repaired hip.

"I had a little muscle fatigue, so I was kind of struggling throughout the game. So to come in and hit a shot like that is big," Chandler said.

Danilo Gallinari added 25 points, including a key 3-pointer in the extra period. Ty Lawson had 24 points and 12 assists for the Nuggets, who are 2-0 in overtime this season.

"I was trying to attack, and when I attack, it brings assists because people have to double me or come over and help," Lawson said. "We played well in the second half. Got steals, deflections in the second half that led to easy baskets. In overtime, we just hit big shots."

Portland, which lost for the first time in six OT games this season, was led by LaMarcus Aldridge's 28 points. Nicolas Batum had 22 points, J.J. Hickson 19 and Damian Lillard 16.

"It was a tremendous game," Portland coach Terry Stotts said. "I think for the most part, both teams played pretty well. Third quarter turnovers hurt us, their transition hurt us. We got better as the game went on but that hurt us early."

Gallinari hit his third 3 of the game for an overtime lead but Aldridge responded with a turnaround jumper that tied it 109-all with 51.8 seconds left. Lawson then lobbed a pass to JaVale McGee for an alley-oop dunk.

The game was tied again when Aldridge hit both free throws after being fouled by McGee, setting the stage for the decisive shot by Chandler. Chandler got open in the corner and Andre Iguodala got the ball to him. Chandler caught it, immediately put up the shot and it swished through.

"They were going to have to leave someone open," Lawson said. "Iggy got it going, getting to the basket, so they had to leave someone open and Wilson hit a big shot."

Lillard just missed a 3-point try with 3.2 seconds left and Lawson made one of two free throws for the final score.

"That wasn't what we were looking for," Lillard said. "But we moved the ball around a little bit, and there were just a few seconds left, so we had to get a shot up. That was the look I had. It felt good actually. I knew I was going to have to shoot it when it came back to me, so I got myself ready to shoot. It came off my hands well. It looked good. It just didn't fall. We've got to live with what happened and get ready for tomorrow."

After Wesley Matthews hit a 5-foot runner to pull the Trail Blazers to 89-86 with 5:13 left, the Nuggets scored six straight points, starting with a pair of free throws by Kenneth Faried, who had 21 points and 11 rebounds, to stretch their lead to 95-86.

Portland came right back, scoring 10 of the next 12 points and pulling to 97-96 on a layup by Aldridge.

Lawson shook free on a drive to the basket for a layup with 45.4 seconds remaining to push the Nuggets' advantage to three.

But Wesley Matthews hit a tying 3-pointer with 32 seconds remaining in regulation. Shots by Iguodala and Lillard both were off the mark in the final moments of the fourth quarter, sending the game into overtime tied at 99.

Portland opened with its highest-scoring first quarter of the season, though Denver stayed right with the Trail Blazers at 35-33.

After a driving layup by Lawson put the Nuggets in front 51-50, Hickson converted a three-point play and Aldridge hit a jumper to help the Trail Blazers lead 57-54 at halftime.

NOTES: Portland's previous first-quarter high was 31 points against the Sacramento Kings on Dec. 26. ... Faried had his 18th double-double of the season. ... The Nuggets have won 22 of their last 24 home games against the Trail Blazers, including the past eight. ... Portland hasn't won in Denver since Dec. 16, 2007, a 116-105 victory.

THE FACTS: Wilson Chandler hit a 3-pointer with 14.9 seconds left in overtime and the Denver Nuggets recovered from blowing a nine-point fourth quarter lead to beat the Portland Trail Blazers 115-111 on Tuesday night.

Ty Lawson had 24 points and 12 assists and Kenneth Faried finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Nuggets, who have won six straight.

LaMarcus Aldridge scored a game-high 28 points and J.J. Hickson had 19 points and 13 rebounds for the Trail Blazers, who have dropped three straight.

QUOTABLE: "We let one get away. We definitely were in position to win the game. We had opportunities. We had some breakdowns out there that we shouldn't have had."

THE STAT: The Nuggets set an NBA record for futility when they missed all 22 of their 3-point attempts in the first meeting with Portland. They missed their first one Tuesday then hit their next two. They finished 9-for-25 from long range.

TURNING POINT: After Aldridge hit two free throws to tie the game with 32 seconds left in overtime, the Nuggets called timeout and put Chandler back in the game. Chandler, who was playing just his second game after missing two months, set up on the wing and when Andre Iguodala drove to the lane, he was wide open. Iguodala hit him with the pass and Chandler didn't hesitate to launch his game-winning shot.

QUOTABLE II: "Iggy beat his guy off the dribble, so it was a shot I had to take. It felt good. The way the game was going for me I was a little fatigued, I had a little muscle fatigue, so I was kind of struggling throughout the game. So to come in and hit a shot like that is big."

HOT: Portland hit its first five 3-pointers, which helped wipe out an early eight-point deficit. Their biggest 3-pointer was the one by Wes Matthews with 32 seconds left in regulation that sent the game to overtime.

NOT: In between the first five 3-point attempts and Matthews' game-tying shot the Blazers were 2-for-18 from long range. They finished the game going 1-for-12 from there after halftime.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Aldridge has had just one stinker of an offensive game in his last six. Against the Nuggets he has been a monster. In his last three games against them before Tuesday he was averaging 20.7 points and 7.7 rebounds and did nothing to hurt those averages in the overtime loss.

GOOD MOVE: Putting Chandler back in the game with 32 seconds left. With Denver's guards getting to the basket for easy buckets throughout the second half the defense had to respect any drives into the lane, and it opened up the outside shot for Denver.

QUOTABLE III: "Wilson in the corner in our pick-and-roll stuff is tough to cover. We were a little bit lucky but we've been piecing our wins together in a very solid way."

BAD MOVE: Nuggets 7-footer JaVale McGee went 2-for-7 from the field, including four missed layups. Three times in the first half he tried to go up-and-under for a bucket but missed badly each time. He redeemed himself with an alley-oop dunk with 39 seconds left in overtime that gave Denver a 111-109 lead.

ROOKIE WATCH: Portland point guard Damian Lillard had an average game by his standards, but his 16 points, five assists and eight rebounds were still solid numbers.

NOTABLE: Denver improved to 15-2 at home. The Nuggets are now 2-0 in overtime while Portland fell to 5-1 in extra time. ... Faried's double-double was his 18th of the season. ... Portland has lost three straight by a combined 14 points. ... Hickson has eight straight double-doubles.
