Wizards-Bulls Preview

Coming off an unexpected extended break, the Chicago Bulls are hoping to be a bit healthier as they try to bounce back from a pair of poor performances.

Hosting the NBA-worst Washington Wizards should also help.

The Bulls hope to have both Richard Hamilton and Luol Deng back Saturday night against a Wizards team coming off its first victory in nine games.

Chicago (15-12) hasn't played since Tuesday after Wednesday's game versus Indiana was postponed by a snowstorm that slammed the Indianapolis area. The extra time off has given Hamilton and Deng a chance to heal.

Hamilton has missed the last 12 games with a sprained left foot after averaging 13.9 points in starting the first 15. The 14-year veteran has returned to practice and is expected to be a game-time decision.

Deng's status also likely will be determined shortly before tip-off after he injured his right ankle in the Bulls' Christmas game against Houston. He has started all 27 contests, averaging a team-high 17.7 points and ranking third in rebounds at 7.0 per game.

Although Deng went to the bench early Tuesday, he wasn't the only starter to sit out most of the fourth quarter. With his team trailing by as many as 35, coach Tom Thibodeau went to his bench and the Bulls wound up losing 120-97. It was the second straight lopsided defeat for Chicago, which was down by as many as 26 in last Saturday's 92-75 loss in Atlanta.

"If you are not right and don't have an edge, you are not going to win without the right amount of intensity," Thibodeau said after the Rockets shot an opponent season-high 56.1 percent and racked up the most points scored against the Bulls since Nov. 4, 2010.

It was an uncharacteristic performance by Chicago, which ranks among the league leaders in scoring defense (92.1 per game) and defensive field goal percentage (43.1).

The Bulls would seem to have a good chance to regroup against a Wizards team that averages a league-low 89.2 points, though Washington coach Randy Wittman believes his club will have an advantage.

"They're going to be rusty. That's good for us," he said after Friday's 105-97 home victory over Orlando. "We've got to win. We're feeling good. We played well. Let's play again. I don't worry about Chicago."

Despite its offensive struggles, Washington (4-23) showed some signs of life against the Magic in winning for the first time since Dec. 11. The Wizards shot 47.7 percent - their third-best mark of the season - and overcame a 17-point deficit to snap an eight-game losing streak.

"Obviously, a lot of satisfaction in the win, but the way we won it - with what this team's gone through at the start of the year, to go down 25-8 ... for our guys to not put their heads down and grind it out," Wittman said.

Nene had season highs of 23 points and 11 rebounds and Jordan Crawford, coming off the bench for a second straight game, matched a season high with 27 points while going 11 of 16 from the floor. In his last six games, Crawford is averaging 21.8 points - 5.8 better than his team-leading average.

The Wizards, 1-12 away from the nation's capital, haven't faced the Bulls since an 87-84 win in Chicago on April 16, a game both Deng and Derrick Rose sat out. That snapped Washington's seven-game losing streak in the series and also ended its six-game skid at the United Center.

While the Bulls hope Hamilton and Deng can provide a spark offensively, getting Joakim Noah involved also seems crucial. Chicago is 11-2 when Noah, who averages 13.3 points, scores at least 12.

Belinelli scores 17 in Bulls' win over Wizards

CHICAGO (AP) Marco Belinelli showed he can also be a force off the bench for the Chicago Bulls.

Belinelli returned to his role as a reserve and led the Bulls with 17 points in an 87-77 victory over the Washington Wizards on Saturday night.

Carlos Boozer added 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Bulls (16-12), who snapped a two-game losing streak. Luol Deng scored 11 points after injuring his right ankle Tuesday in a loss to Houston.

Bradley Beal led the NBA-worst Wizards (4-24) with 14 points.

Belinelli made 7 of 16 shots in a reserve role as Richard Hamilton returned to the starting lineup. Hamilton had missed 12 games because of a torn plantar fascia in his left foot.

"Marco was terrific," Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. "He has been playing well for a long time. He hit big shots and made big plays."

When Hamilton was sidelined, Belinelli averaged 15.3 points per game in 12 starts, compared to just five points in 14 games as a reserve.

Belinelli, who signed as a free agent with the Bulls in July, said his confidence has risen as he has adjusted to his team.

"The first couple weeks of the season, I was a little bit nervous, (did not have) too much confidence in myself," Belinelli said.

Kevin Seraphin had 12 points, and Emeka Okafor added 11 points and 18 rebounds for Washington, which has lost nine of 10.

The Wizards held a 56-49 rebounding edge.

"I just turned around, and the ball was in my hands," Okafor said. "It seemed like perfect timing a lot of times. It didn't start off that way. Actually, at the beginning, I couldn't grab one at all, but as the game went on, I found my flow."

Wizards leading scorer Jordan Crawford, averaging 16 points per game, sat out because of a left ankle injury.

The Wizards pulled to within three with 5:19 left after Okafor put back Shelvin Mack's missed free throw. But Belinelli answered with a 3-pointer, and Boozer hit a jumper for an 84-77 lead.

"It definitely wasn't pretty," the Bulls' Joakim Noah said. "Both teams shot pretty low percentages. We still have to play better and we still have to talk more on transition. We're a work in progress. We're happy we got back on the winning track."

Both teams struggled from the field as Chicago shot 39 percent, and the Wizards connected on 37 percent. Washington scored 51 points in the final three quarters after putting up 26 points in the first period.

"We didn't shoot the ball again very well," Wizards coach Randy Wittman said. "They're a good defensive team. They're going to make those things tough."

The Bulls hadn't played since Tuesday because their Wednesday night game against the Pacers was postponed due to snow in Indianapolis.

Chicago led 45-39 at halftime after shooting 39 percent. Deng led the Bulls with nine points. Seraphin had 10 points for the Wizards.

The Bulls opened the third quarter on an 11-4 run to take a 56-43 lead. The Wizards responded with a 15-4 spurt to pull within two with 3:35 left in the period. Chicago quickly pushed its advantage back to nine after a tip-in by Noah, a 3-pointer by Kirk Hinrich, and Belinelli's dunk.

Washington got back within three points early in the final quarter, but Chicago again had an answer. Nate Robinson made a layup, and Belinelli sank another 3-pointer to push the Bulls back in front by eight.

Thibodeau said Belinelli has gained confidence as the season has gone on.

"When you are new to a team, he was trying to fit in," Thibodeau said. "He was trying to learn the system. He has already proven to be a good player in this league, so it was a matter of time.

"Once he had a better understanding of his teammates, and they had a better understanding of him, he is good. He can score a lot of different ways."

The Wizards got off to a strong start, leading by as many as eight in the first quarter and taking a 26-22 lead at the end of the period.

Washington went cold in the second quarter, shooting 4 of 21.

Garrett Temple started at guard for the Wizards in place of Mack. Temple, signed by Washington on Tuesday, had 13 points Friday in a win over Orlando that snapped an eight-game losing streak.

Hamilton had nine points in 15 minutes Saturday. Thibodeau said he liked what he saw from Hamilton, especially when the veteran found a rhythm in the second half.

"We need his minutes. We need his shots. We need his points," Thibodeau said.

Belinelli replaced Hamilton with 4:38 left in the first quarter after Hamilton got off to a 2-for-5 start. Belinelli scored six points in the first half.

"In the first quarter, I tried to bring a little energy on defense and offense," Belinelli said. "Tonight was good."

NOTES: Washington is 1-13 on the road this season. ... The Wizards have lost 12 times in their past 15 trips to Chicago but they beat the Bulls 87-84 last April in their previous trip.

THE FACTS: Marco Belinelli scored 17 points off the bench to lead the Chicago Bulls to an 87-77 victory over the visiting Washington Wizards Saturday. On a poor-shooting night for both teams, Carlos Boozer added 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Bulls, who broke a two-game losing streak with the win. Bradley Beal led the Wizards with 14 points. The Wizards failed for the fourth time this season to get a second consecutive victory.

THE FACTS II: The Wizards played without their leading scorer, Jordan Crawford, who was reported out with a sore left ankle just before the game started. Crawford is averaging 16 points per game and scored 27 in the Wizards' win over Orlando Friday but has been plagued by soreness in his left ankle since early in the season. Saturday was the first game of the season he missed.

THE FACTS III: The Bulls led by 13 points halfway through the third quarter then gave up 11 consecutive points to the Wizards, cutting the lead to two with 3:36 left in the quarter. The Wizards could never completely erase the deficit, however.

ROSTER MOVES: Bulls guard Rip Hamilton returned after missing 12 games with a torn plantar fascia in his left foot and scored nine points in 14 minutes. Belinelli, who averaged 15 points starting in Hamilton's place, scored 17 points in 33 minutes off the bench.

QUOTABLE I: "I'm not sure yet. We are going back and forth."

THE STAT: The Bulls shot 39 percent (34 for 87) from the field but outshot the Wizards, who shot 36.5 percent (31 for 85).

THE STAT II: The Wizards outrebounded the Bulls 56-49 and had 16 offensive rebounds for 15 second-chance points. Emeka Okafor had 18 rebounds himself. However, the Wizards turned the ball over 16 times for 17 Bulls points off the miscues.

TURNING POINT: With the Bulls up 79-76, Belinelli hit a 3-pointer with five minutes remaining to give the Bulls a six-point cushion that seemed to end the threat of upset.

INJURY UPDATE: Washington guard Crawford first injured his ankle in early November, but has played through the pain and been the team's leading scorer in the absence of John Wall. But it was decided just before game time that he could not go Saturday. Bulls guard Hamilton made his first appearance and start after missing 12 games with a torn plantar fascia in his left foot and scored nine points in 14:42 of playing time. Luol Deng injured his right ankle against Houston on Tuesday but played 37 minutes and scored 11 points.

QUOTABLE II: "He can score in his sleep.''

GOOD MOVE: Perhaps because the Bulls have been beaten on the boards in seven of their last nine games, Bulls coach Thibodeau gave backup center Nzar Mohammed 13 minutes of playing time. He did not score but grabbed eight rebounds.

ROOKIE WATCH: In Crawford's absence, Beal from Florida was the Wizards' team leader on the floor. He played 34 minutes and scored 14 points with five rebounds, three assists and three turnovers.

NOTABLE: The Wizards have not won two games in a row this season, but all of their games following victory have been on the road... the Wizards have only one road win this season... the Bulls were 7-5 in games Hamilton missed due to injury... the Bulls are 9-6 with their starting lineup of Kirk Hinrich, Hamilton, Deng, Noah and Boozer.
