Wizards-Pistons Preview

The Washington Wizards own the worst record in the NBA and the Detroit Pistons aren't too far behind.

That's not about to change any time soon, but a home-and-home set could provide some relief for one team.

The Wizards and Pistons begin that stretch looking to end their respective lengthy losing streaks Friday night in Detroit.

Washington (3-20) is last in the league with 89.7 points per game and 40.7 percent shooting from the floor.

The Wizards' latest losing streak reached five with Wednesday's 90-83 defeat at Orlando. Three of those losses have come on the road, where they are an NBA-worst 1-11.

"It hurts, but the moral of the story is you can't give up," said swingman Martell Webster, who had 11 points. "I think if we can keep our heads up and stay confident in our system, things will change."

That's not likely to happen with star point guard John Wall still out with a knee injury, and Bradley Beal possibly sidelined for a second game due to a sore lower back.

Beal, the third overall pick out of Florida in this year's draft, is second on the team with 12.5 points per game.

"We don't have the guy you're just going to give the ball to and say carry the load for us," coach Randy Wittman said. "We're looking for solutions, we're trying."

Jordan Crawford is doing his part, averaging 18.2 points over the past 12 games after totaling 46 with 17 assists and 15 rebounds in the last two.

Washington has dropped 10 of the past 12 meetings with the Pistons (7-21) and eight of nine on the road.

Detroit is also in search of answers, having dropped six straight with four of those defeats by seven points or fewer. The Pistons are shooting 40.5 percent from the field during the skid.

They've dropped five in a row at home immediately following a five-game winning streak there.

"We're trying to find out what we need to do to get back on track," said center Greg Monroe, the team leader with 15.7 points and 9.1 rebounds.

The Pistons wasted a superb performance from Monroe on Wednesday, when he had a career-high 35 points with 10 rebounds in a 97-91 loss at Toronto.

"We missed 12 free throws, we missed 24 shots in the paint and that resulted in the outcome," coach Lawrence Frank said.

Brandon Knight is looking to rebound from one of his worst games of the season. The guard made just 1 of 10 from the floor to match his season low of two points against the Raptors.

He had been averaging 20.7 points over the previous seven games.

Detroit won two of three against Washington last season without much help from Knight, who averaged 5.3 points on 6 of 30 from the field.

Monroe was much more effective, totaling 45 points in two home matchups.

These teams meet again in Washington on Saturday.

Pistons pound Wizards 100-68

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) After the month the Detroit Pistons have had, they will take a victory over any team.

Greg Monroe had 15 points and nine rebounds and rookie Andre Drummond added a double-double as the Pistons ended a six-game losing streak with a 100-68 rout of the Washington Wizards on Friday night.

It was Detroit's first win over anyone other than Cleveland since late November.

"We can't worry about who is playing and who isn't playing on the other team," Monroe said. "We just have to go out there and do our job, and we finally did that tonight."

Washington has been decimated by injuries, with John Wall, Trevor Ariza, Beal and Nene among the unavailable players, and lost their sixth straight.

"That was an embarrassment, and I apologize to our ownership and to our fans," Washington coach Randy Wittman said. "I especially apologize to anyone who watched that entire game. I would have turned it off after the first five minutes."

Jordan Crawford led Washington with 20 points, but no one else scored more than 10 points.

"This was a situation where we had some key guys out, which meant our other guys had a chance to step up and prove that they belong in the NBA," Wittman said in a postgame news conference that only lasted one question. "That didn't happen. We may only have nine guys, but I need to find five of them who are willing to show me that they deserve to be here."

The Pistons, who never trailed, got 15 points from Brandon Knight and 11 points and a career-high 14 rebounds from Drummond. The Wizards passed on Drummond this summer in the draft, taking Bradley Beal instead.

"Why wouldn't I be aware of it? I worked out for them, and they were on the schedule," Drummond said of his first matchup with Washington. "It doesn't really matter, though. I'm with Detroit now, and I'm just trying to beat them."

The teams meet again Saturday night in the nation's capital, but the Wizards will have to play a much better game to have a shot at splitting the home-and-home series.

"It's not fun when these games happen, but they haven't happened too often with this team," Washington's Emeka Okafor said. "You try to fight against it, but the more you fight, the more you feel like you are in quicksand."

Detroit's biggest problem may have been a fourth-quarter injury to Rodney Stuckey, who went immediately to the locker room after getting hit in the mouth on a fourth-quarter drive. Stuckey didn't lose any teeth, but did not return to the game. He is expected to travel to Washington for Saturday's rematch.

"He got one tooth bent back, but you always want to embellish these stories and make them look good, so in five years, he'll have had a tooth knocked out," Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said. "I feel bad for him, because I'm a little squeamish when it comes to teeth."

With Stuckey unable to shoot his free throws, the Pistons chose Slava Kravtsov to take them. In his NBA debut, the Ukrainian rookie made 1 of 2. Kravtsov dunked in the final seconds for his first field goal.

"It was great to play in a game, but it isn't my goal to come in to shoot someone else's free throws," he said. "I wasn't very comfortable out there tonight, but I want to show that I'm capable of playing more minutes and helping our team."

The game got off to an ugly start, as the teams combined to miss 17 of their first 19 shots. Detroit finally got enough offense going to build a 9-2 lead midway through the first, and the game never got much better.

Washington shot 26 percent in the first quarter and 32 percent in the first half, and only Crawford's 14 points kept them from being behind by more than 53-34 at the intermission.

In contrast, Detroit had three scorers in double figures by halftime and had 13 assists on 19 field goals.

The Pistons didn't let up in the third quarter, moving the advantage to 26, and they were up by as many as 34 down the stretch.

NOTES: Crawford picked up a third-quarter technical for arguing a call, and had to be led away from referee Michael Smith by teammate Emeka Okafor. Later in the quarter, when Crawford didn't get a call on a drive to the basket, Wittman yelled "Don't hold a grudge, Mike. Give us a call." ... In an attempt to boost their struggling attendance, the Pistons will have halftime concerts from MC Hammer (Dec. 28) and Sheila E (Dec. 30) at their next two home games. After leading the league in attendance during much of the past decade, Detroit has trouble filling half the arena for most games. ... Cartier Martin was called for a flagrant foul for a hard screen on Drummond in the fourth.

THE FACTS: Rookie Andre Drummond established career highs with 14 rebounds and five blocks and added 11 points as the Detroit Pistons ended a six-game losing streak with a 100-68 win over the shorthanded Washington Wizards at The Palace of Auburn Hills Friday night. Greg Monroe and Brandon Knight had 15 points apiece for Detroit (8-21) in the first game of a home-and-home series between the clubs. The rematch will be played in Washington Saturday night. Jordan Crawford led the Wizards (3-21), who have lost six straight, with 20 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.

QUOTABLE: "He's done a great job of coming in and playing with a lot of energy, doing what the coaches ask him to do. He controlled the boards and he controlled the paint. He's only going to get better, but I'm not surprised with anything he's doing right now. He's doing his job."

THE STAT: 9. The Wizards were down to nine players due to six injuries, with the latest losses being second-leading scorer and rebounding leader Nene (sore foot) and rookie guard Bradley Beal (sore back). Both could return for the rematch Saturday. The Wizards have gone all season without star guard John Wall (knee), and were also missing forwards Trevor Booker (knee) and Trevor Ariza (calf) and guard A.J. Price (hand). That left Washington with only two players averaging double figures, Crawford and forward Kevin Seraphin, and they scored a season low in points.

TURNING POINT: The Pistons took command with a 19-2 run spanning the first and second quarters, giving them a 21-point advantage. Knight and Charlie Villanueva each made 3-pointers during the run and Drummond took over early in the second with three consecutive inside baskets, all off feeds from Rodney Stuckey. The Wizards were limited to a Crawford layup during that span.

QUOTABLE II: "We play the same team in less than 24 hours, so we've just got to take what we did tonight and move forward into tomorrow's game. We don't want to let the win get us too excited because we have another one tomorrow."

HOT: Monroe was coming off a career-high 35-point outburst against Toronto Wednesday. He tied for the team high in points on this night while grabbing nine rebounds and making three assists. He sat out the fourth quarter of the blowout to rest up for Saturday's rematch.

NOT: The only available players on the Wizards bench didn't do much to support their starters. They combined for 11 points on 5-for-24 shooting while playing 75 minutes. Cartier Martin took 11 shots and made just two as the Wizards reserves were outscored 48-11 by Detroit's bench.

ROOKIE WATCH: Drummond's previous highs were 13 rebounds and three blocks. He came into the game leading all qualifying rookies in blocks and tied for first with Charlotte's Michael Kidd-Gilchrist in rebounding despite averaging 18.5 minutes. Pistons guard Kyle Singler added 10 points and five rebounds.

NOTABLE: The Pistons have won nine of their last 10 at home against the Wizards. ... The last time Detroit held an opponent under 70 points was an 85-69 victory over Miami on March 27, 2008. ... Stuckey took an elbow in the mouth from Washington's Seraphin with 10:03 remaining and did not return. Ukranian center Viacheslav Kravtsov made his NBA debut by replacing Stuckey as the free throw shooter. He played six minutes and scored three points. ... Pistons reserve forward Corey Maggette, their highest-paid player, was inactive. He recently lost his rotation spot to Austin Daye. ... The Wizards, who ranked last in scoring (89.7 ppg) and offensive field-goal percentage (40.7 percent) entering the game, shot 32.9 percent from the field. ... Washington coach Randy Wittman has started 12 of the 15 players on his roster.
