Pacers-Cavaliers Preview

The Indiana Pacers turned in their best shooting performance of the season in their last game.

A similar effort could be on tap Friday night when they visit a Cleveland Cavaliers team that has lost five straight and struggled on defense all season.

Indiana (14-12) shot a season-high 51.3 percent Wednesday to cruise to a 104-84 home victory over Utah. The Pacers hadn't topped 50 percent this season.

Gerald Green scored a season-best 21 points and George Hill and Paul George each added 20. George also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

"I think we trusted passing more than we have all season and that's what coach (Frank Vogel) has been preaching all year long," Hill said. "If we can believe in each other, trust in each other, try to create a shot for each other rather than for yourself all the time, we can have great offensive nights like we did tonight."

Finding the range against Cleveland (5-22) should not be difficult. The Cavaliers are last in the NBA in field-goal defense, allowing teams to shoot 47.6 percent.

Cleveland also could be without Anderson Varejao, who is averaging a league-best 14.4 rebounds. Varejao sat out Wednesday's 103-91 loss at Boston with a bruised right knee.

The Cavs allowed the Celtics to shoot 59.7 percent one night after letting lowly Toronto make 52.0 percent of its attempts in a 113-99 defeat.

"We can't go into games just thinking we're going to outscore people," coach Byron Scott said. "We don't have the personnel to do that with right now."

One of Cleveland's best defensive efforts came in a 96-81 loss at Indiana on Dec. 12. The Pacers shot 41.0 percent but prevailed thanks to a stellar second half in which they limited the Cavs to 23 points.

Cleveland star Kyrie Irving was held to nine points on 4-for-12 shooting in that game - his second after missing 11 straight with a broken finger. The Pacers made a key defensive adjustment in forcing the ball out of Irving's hands in the second half.

"Once Indiana became more aggressive and tried to take the ball out of Kyrie's hands, we caved into it and we just stopped playing," Scott said after that game.

Cleveland could be better poised to handle such a strategy since Dion Waiters is back. Waiters missed that contest with a sprained left ankle and has scored 21 points in two games since returning. The rookie is second on the team with 14.7 points per game.

Cleveland has dropped 16 straight to Central Division opponents since a 101-100 win over Detroit on Feb. 21. The Cavs have lost nine of 10 to the Pacers.

George enters this contest with two straight double-doubles after going 21 games in a row without one. He scored a team-high 27 earlier this month against Cleveland.

C.J. Miles led the Cavs with 28 points in the first meeting with Indiana, but he's totaled just 16 in two games since going back to the bench with Waiters rejoining the lineup.

Pacers dunk sinking Cavs, 99-89

CLEVELAND (AP) Huddled around a laptop in the middle of their locker room, the Indiana Pacers watched Gerald Green's ferocious dunk over and over again. They couldn't get enough.

Once was more than the sinking Cavaliers could handle.

Roy Hibbert scored 18 points, Lance Stephenson added a season-high 16 and Green delivered a monster jam early in the fourth quarter that sent the Pacers to a 99-89 win over Cleveland, which lost its sixth straight game Friday night and has dropped 17 in a row to Central Division opponents.

Hibbert didn't have to deal with injured Cavs center Anderson Varejao, the NBA's leading rebounder, who missed his second game in a row with a bruised right knee.

Varejao's absence may have been most felt when Green, the NBA's slam dunk champion in 2007, threw down a dunk that's certain to make highlight reels for the next few days. Driving the left side, he soared in the lane and hammered the ball in over Cleveland's Samardo Samuels, who could do nothing to stop it.

"That was one of the best dunks I've ever seen," Pacers coach Frank Vogel, "which is also what the guys in the locker room were saying."

Green stared at Samuels and was given a technical foul, but the damage was done.

"I don't mind a little swagger, but I don't want to get a technical," Vogel said. "Two games in a row, he's given us big lifts off the bench with our scoring."

Green didn't want to judge his jam.

"I don't rank my dunks," he said. "I got the ball on the perimeter and (my) team just kind of gave me the whole side of the floor - and I got the dunk."

David West added 15 points with 10 rebounds and Stephenson went 7 of 8 from the field and chipped in a career-high seven assists as the Pacers won for the fifth time in six games.

Kyrie Irving scored 17 points on just 5-of-16 shooting and had six turnovers for the Cavs, who are 1-11 in their last 12 games. Tristan Thompson had 12 points and 13 rebounds for Cleveland, 3-21 in its past 24.

"Unless we play as a team at both ends of the floor, we are going to continue to lose," said Cavs coach Bryron Scott, who acknowledged being frustrated with his young squad and unsure of how to fix it. "I'm not running out of ideas, but I'm getting close."

With Varejao on the bench in street clothes, the Pacers enjoyed a size advantage inside and they outrebounded the Cavaliers 44-35. Hibbert spent the last 5 minutes on the bench after picking up his fifth foul, but by then Indiana led by double digits and rolled to a relatively easy win.

Indiana's Paul George, scoreless at halftime, had eight points and four steals in the third quarter, when the Pacers outscored the Cavaliers 33-22 to take a 10-point lead into the fourth.

During an 18-5 run by the Pacers, George stole a lazy pass by rookie Tyler Zeller, drove for a layup and was fouled. He missed his free throw, but George poked the ball away from an unsuspecting Zeller and threw down a two-handed dunk to give the Pacers a 69-55 lead.

"In the second half, that was just me being aggressive," George said. "If I didn't get those steals, I know Coach would've put them on his (mistake) tapes because that's not the way we play defense. I saw an opportunity to be aggressive on the basketball."

Scott decided to rest Varejao for the second straight game rather than risk losing him for several more.

The 6-foot-11 Brazilian will also probably sit out Saturday's game in Milwaukee, giving him additional time to heal before the Cavs play again on Dec. 26. Varejao, who is averaging 14.4 rebounds and playing at an All-Star level, bruised his knee Tuesday night against Toronto.

Irving had a puzzling first half and a disappointing game. Scott agreed that his star did not seem "engaged" throughout.

Irving scored just five points on 1-of-4 shooting and had four turnovers by halftime. On one of them, he drove the lane and badly overthrew the 7-foot Zeller but then showed some outward disappointment toward his teammate, who would have needed a step ladder to catch Irving's pass.

Other than an eight-point flurry in the third quarter, Irving never found his groove on offense and settled for jump shots instead of driving to the basket.

"I'm still trying to find that balance where I'm getting everyone involved," Irving said. "I'm trying to get my bigs shots and my guards shots. I'm still trying to figure it out. It's frustrating, but it's a process."

Notes: Not long after his big dunk, Green left with a sprained left ankle. He expects to play Saturday at New Orleans. ... Indiana has won four in a row over Cleveland. ... Scott is looking forward to having three practices next week. Because of Cleveland's brutal schedule and injuries, the Cavs have been reduced to one practice the past three weeks. ... Zeller made his second start for Varejao and finished with 12 points. He scored 20 on Wednesday at Boston in his first career start. ... Indiana's Tyler and Ben Hansbrough are the fourth pair of brothers in NBA history to play on the same team, joining Dick and Tom Van Arsdale, Dominque and Gerald Wilkins and Mark and Brent Price. ... Tyler Hansbrough was called for a technical in the fourth when he got mixed up with Thompson. The two exchanged a shove and some words.

THE FACTS: Center Roy Hibbert scored a game-high 18 points and power forward David West collected 15 points and 10 rebounds, leading the Indiana Pacers to a 99-89 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers Friday night at Quicken Loans Arena. Shooting guard Lance Stephenson added a season-best 16 points and a career-high seven assists for Indiana (15-12), which has won five of its last six games. Cleveland point guard Kyrie Irving scored 17 points, while power forward Tristan Thompson had 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. The Cavaliers (5-23) have lost six straight contests.

QUOTABLE: "Lance [Stephenson] was great tonight and really gave us a spark with his offense. We know he's as fast with the basketball as anybody in the league, but he also played really solid 'D' for the most part tonight."

THE STAT: The Cavaliers have lost 17 straight games against Central Division opponents, including all eight this season. Their last in-division win came on Feb. 21, 2012, against Detroit. "Everyone is frustrated and everyone has the right to be," Irving said. "We just have to have consistent effort on both ends of the floor -- and come out and stop making excuses because we're young." Overall, Cleveland is 1-11 in its last 12 games, 2-15 in its last 17 contests, and 3-21 in its last 24 games -- putting it on pace for the worst season in franchise history.

TURNING POINT: Indiana outscored the Cavaliers 33-22 in the third quarter, emphatically erasing its one-point halftime deficit. Pacers small forward Paul George, who did not score in 15 first-half minutes, erupted for eight points and four steals in the period. "I felt their wings were a little comfortable out there in the first half when the refs took me out of the game," said George, who finished with 10 points, four assists, and a team season-high five steals. "In the second half, that was just me being aggressive going at them."

QUOTABLE II: "I wish I knew how to fix this. We're right there for most of the game, and then we have a lapse and fall apart. We've got to find a solution to that and just put four quarters together."

GOOD MOVE: Cavaliers center Anderson Varejao (right knee bruise) was held out for a second straight contest and will not return to action until Dec. 26 at Washington. The mop-topped Brazilian leads the NBA in rebounding at 14.4 per game, but fell hard to the court on his right knee Tuesday against Toronto. "It's better for Andy to miss three games now than 33 games or 43 games or whatever down the road," Cleveland coach Byron Scott said. "I know he doesn't want to miss any games, but my goal is to get that knee as healthy as possible."

BAD MOVE: Scott called on Kevin Jones as the Cavaliers' first post player off the bench, but the rookie power forward failed to take advantage of the opportunity. Jones had two points, one assist and two fouls in nine minutes -- and was repeatedly victimized by West. ... Cleveland's only free agent acquisition of the summer, shooting guard C.J. Miles, missed seven of his 11 field goal attempts and is shooting 38.4 percent on the season. ... Cavaliers shooting guard Daniel Gibson and Hansbrough were assessed technicals for their fourth-quarter jawing match.

NOTABLE: Cavaliers rookie shooting guard Dion Waiters had a game-high tying seven assists, while small forward Alonzo Gee grabbed zero rebounds in 32 minutes. ... Cleveland power forwards Jon Leuer and Luke Walton dressed but did not play. The same was true for Pacers point guard D.J. Augustin. ... The Cavaliers have won one home game in October, November and December, making them 3-9 on the season. ... Irving and Thompson continue to play with protective masks for Cleveland. ... Indiana small forward Danny Granger (left knee soreness) has yet to play this season and remains out.
