76ers-Pacers Preview

Starting with the health of their top playmaker, the Philadelphia 76ers have some concerns as they head into one of the toughest portions of their schedule.

It might not be the best time to face the Indiana Pacers, who are coming off a historic defensive performance.

The 76ers will try to get off to a strong start with 12 of their next 15 games on the road as they visit the defensive-minded Pacers on Friday night.

After a 4-2 start on the road, Philadelphia (12-10) has lost its last two contests away from home and four of six overall following a 96-89 loss to Chicago on Wednesday night.

Jrue Holiday led Philadelphia with 26 points and nine assists, giving him 51 and 17, respectively, in his last two games.

Holiday, however, was diagnosed with a left foot sprain following the loss and is a game-time decision against the Pacers.

"It's very disconcerting," coach Doug Collins said on Thursday.

Holiday has missed only one game since becoming the starting point guard in the 2009-10 season. That came last season when Collins rested most of his starters in a 108-86 loss at Detroit in the regular-season finale.

This season, Holiday is having a career year for the 76ers. He's averaging a team-high 18.4 points and ranks near the top of the NBA at 8.9 assists per game. The 2009 first-round pick had 17 points in both games at Indiana last season, and the teams split four games last season.

"He's a big part of what we're doing," guard Jason Richardson said. "He's our leading scorer and a guy who gets us into things."

If Holiday is unable to play, Evan Turner would handle most of the point guard responsibilities.

Turner, who had 16 points against the Bulls, has been a distributor from the forward spot with at least five assists in seven of 22 contests. He has committed more than three turnovers just once.

Thaddeus Young also looks to continue to his strong play, averaging 18.1 points on 56.8 percent shooting in his last 10 games.

Philadelphia will take any spark they can get, scoring 86.0 points per game in its last four losses while averaging 102.2 over its last six victories.

"We just have to continue to execute and put our pulse on the game early," Young said. "If we do that, we'll be fine."

It doesn't figure to be easy against the Pacers (11-11), who held Cleveland to 23 second-half points in a 96-81 victory on Wednesday night.

It was the fewest points the Pacers allowed in a half since they joined the NBA in 1976. They held the Cavaliers to 8 of 41 shooting (19.5 percent) in the final two quarters while avoiding a third straight loss.

Indiana leads the league in defensive field-goal percentage (40.9) and ranks near the top in points allowed (91.3).

"We were contesting all of their shots and that's what made it tough for them," guard Paul George said after the win.

George has had the hot hand offensively for Indiana, averaging 24.4 points while shooting 15 for 28 from beyond the arc over his last five games.

"He's becoming a special player and we have to hope that continues," coach Frank Vogel said.

Still, the Pacers haven't scored 100 points in their last 12 games and rank near the bottom of the NBA in scoring at 91.0 points per game.

However, they could get a boost from David West, who averaged 25.0 points in two home games against the 76ers last season.

George, Hibbert, Hill lead Pacers past 76ers 95-85

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Paul George let his teammates do the dirty work inside Friday night. All he had to do was clean up.

Did he ever.

The third-year guard scored 14 of his 28 points in a game-changing third quarter and teamed up with Roy Hibbert, David West and George Hill to deliver a stinging combination for the Indiana Pacers in a 95-85 victory over the short-handed Philadelphia 76ers.

"I really want the ball. I really feel right now that I can make plays and create for others," George said after topping the 20-point mark for the fifth time in six games. "And when we need the shot to go down, I can make them."

George proved it time and again Friday night.

But he had the easy part - taking advantage of the openings created by his bigger teammates in the middle. He finished 9 of 17 from the field, 5 of 7 on 3-pointers, grabbed six rebounds, blocked three shots and seemingly made every big basket including the eventual knockout 3-pointer with 2:01 left in the game.

And he had plenty of help.

West started the game-changing third-quarter scoring flurry and scored six of his 14 points during an 18-6 run that sent Indiana from a 46-42 deficit into a 60-52 lead.

Hibbert, who has struggled offensively most of this season, produced his best all-around game. He finished with 19 points, one short of his season high, tied his season best with three assists and grabbed 13 rebounds - still a season best despite having one taken away during a postgame scoring change that gave Hill a triple-double.

Hill finished with 15 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds following a late scoring change from early in the game - the first triple-double of his career - at the expense of Hibbert.

The All-Star center didn't care about the stat sheet, only that Indiana (12-11) was back over the .500 mark and 9-5 in its last 14 games.

"I want to be aggressive. I was taking shots and they were dropping tonight, so I'm happy for that," Hibbert said. "But I'm happier with the win."

Philadelphia faced a big challenge Friday.

Not only did it have to contend with Indiana's resurgent offense, it also had to deal with the NBA's second-best scoring defense without two of its top players.

With Andrew Bynum still out because of bilateral knee bone bruises, coach Doug Collins opted to keep top scorer Jrue Holiday on the bench with a sprained left foot, rather than risk further injury.

Collins adapted by putting Evan Turner at point guard and inserting Nick Young into the starting lineup for the first time this season, moves that produced mixed results.

Turner responded with 22 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, while Young had eight points on 4-of-14 shooting. Spencer Hawes (18 points) and Thaddeus Young (12) were the only other players to reach double figures.

The bigger problem for Philadelphia came on the inside, where Indiana had a 40-26 scoring advantage in the paint.

"We knew second-chance points were going to be a problem. They are a big, strong team," Collins said. "I thought our guys fought. I thought we did some good things."

Just not enough of them.

Philadelphia took advantage of two errant inbounds passes from West late in the first half, scoring six points in the final 3.8 seconds to take a 44-42 halftime lead.

It didn't last long.

After Turner started the second half with a 19-footer, West and Hibbert accounted for six points in an 8-0 Indiana run that gave the Pacers a 50-46 lead.

George then scored all of Indiana's points in an 8-2 spurt and when West knocked down a 17-footer with 5:03 left in the third, Indiana led 60-52.

Philadelphia spent the rest of the night playing catch-up but never got all the way back.

The 76ers got as close as 86-83 when Hawes made an 18-footer with 2:59 to play. George answered with his final 3 of the night and Philadelphia didn't score another basket as the Pacers sealed it with a 9-2 run.

"For a team struggling offensively, to have a guy that stepped up the way he (George) stepped up is big. He's making shots right now. It's just confidence," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said. "Roy works harder than anybody and he's staying with it and we're staying with him. We wanted them to take tough shots tonight and they made them."

NOTES: Hibbert had only one block, ending a streak of 16 straight games with at least two. ... Philadelphia is 2-5 in its last seven games and has scored 90 or fewer points in all five of those losses. ... Indiana shot a season-best 57.1 percent from 3-point range. ... THE FACTS: Paul George's offense has been generating headlines but his defense played just as big a role in beating the Sixers. The third-year forward blocked Spencer Hawes' layup in the final minute as Indiana (12-11) held off Philadelphia 95-85 Friday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. George scored 28 points, topping 20 for the fifth time in the last six games, including a 3-pointer that put Indiana ahead 89-83 with 2:01 remaining. After George's block of Hawes, George Hill drove the lane and fed Roy Hibbert for a clinching dunk.

Hill had his first career triple-double with 15 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds while Hibbert had 19 points and 14 rebounds. Evan Turner led Philadelphia (12-11) with 22 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. The Sixers played without leading scorer Jrue Holiday, out with a sprained left foot.

QUOTABLE: "Paul's been playing this way for a couple of weeks now and it's exciting to see. He is an exceptional defensive player, there's no other way to put it. He's going to be on the all-defensive team this year and for years to tome. That and the fact he can score in a variety of ways is giving us a big lift."

THE STAT: George has averaged 25.0 points, 7.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists in the last six games, shooting .514 from the field (54 of 105) and .571 from the 3-point line (20 of 35).

TURNING POINT: Philadelphia closed the half on a 10-2 run -- including six points in the final 3.8 seconds -- and led 46-42 early in the third quarter before George took over, scoring 12 points in a 21-7 run that put Indiana ahead 63-53. The Sixers got no closer than three the rest of the way.

QUOTABLE II: "We're going to err on the side of caution. I don't want him out there playing on one foot. ... I hope it's only going to be a few days."

HOT: George hit 5 of 7 from the 3-point line and also had three blocked shots. ... Hibbert shot 9 of 16 to emerge from a season-long shooting funk. ... Turner hit 9 of 16 for the Sixers, including both of his 3-point attempts, while Hawes was 8 of 15 off the bench and scored 18.

NOT: David West had a rare off night for Indiana, hitting just 5 of 17 shots. Indiana's reserves totaled just 12 points. Philadelphia wings Jason Richardson (1 of 6) and Nick Young (4 of 14) combined to hit 5 of 20 shots.

GOOD MOVE: After Damien Wilkins made a pair of free throws to cut Indiana's lead to 42-40 with 3.8 seconds left in the first half, Collins surprised Indiana with a full-court press. West's inbounds pass deflected off the backboard and wound up in Turner's hands for a layup with one second left. On the next inbounds play, West overthrew a long lead pass out of bounds, giving the ball back to Philadelphia. Hawes hit a baseline fadeaway just before the buzzer to put the Sixers up 46-42.

BAD MOVE: Turner had carried Philadelphia's offense for much of the night but did not get a shot on the Sixers' final three possessions.

NOTABLE: This was Hibbert's seventh double-double of the season, tying West for team-high... Hibbert's streak of 16 consecutive multi-block games came to an end. ... Indiana is 4-8 against teams at .500 or better. ... With Royal Ivey (strep throat) also out, Turner moved to the point, with Nick Young starting at small forward and Kwame Brown at center. ... Brown was moved ahead of Lavoy Allen because the Sixers face a stretch of games against bigger, more physical centers. ... The Pacers were without shooting guard Lance Stephenson, who sustained a sprained left ankle Wednesday against Cleveland. Gerald Green started in his place. Vogel said Stephenson could return as soon as Saturday's game in Detroit.
