The Denver Nuggets' road-heavy schedule has seemed to catch up with them as they continue to find different ways to squander leads.

That's not very encouraging for a team that hasn't had much success in Auburn Hills.

Denver hopes to avoid a sixth loss in seven road contests Tuesday night against the Detroit Pistons, who have dropped five of their last seven overall.

The Nuggets (10-11) are in the midst of a five-game road trip, part of a stretch in which they'll play eight of nine away from home. They've played consecutive games in Denver only once this season and won't do so again until a three-game homestand Jan. 1-5.

Denver, which concludes its current trip at Minnesota on Wednesday, fell 112-106 at New York on Sunday despite leading by eight points one minute into the fourth quarter.

It has dropped five of its last six road games, blowing leads of at least eight points three times. The Nuggets committed 16 turnovers Friday and are averaging 16.9 giveaways on the road - 28th in the NBA.

"I tell the team all the time. I say, 'I don't mind losing to a good team, but we lose because we give them things,"' coach George Karl said. "We give them gifts."

Ty Lawson scored 23 points while Danilo Gallinari added 21 and nine rebounds Sunday. Andre Iguodala had 15 points but also finished with five turnovers.

"We are a young team," Gallinari said. "We have to practice end-of-game situations more. It is the beginning of the season so we will get better at that."

Denver didn't have much trouble holding a lead in its first meeting with the Pistons, as Iguodala finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds in a 109-97 home win Nov. 6 for its fifth straight victory in the series.

The Nuggets won the last road matchup 109-100 on Jan. 26, 2011, ending a dismal 14-game losing streak at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

Detroit will look to bounce back against Denver while also snapping out of its latest funk after falling 104-97 at Philadelphia on Monday.

Greg Monroe, who had 27 points and 10 boards versus the Nuggets last month, and Brandon Knight scored 22 points each for the Pistons (7-16), who shot only 39.5 percent.

"We had enough offense," coach Lawrence Frank said. "Unfortunately, we missed some timely baskets. Defensively, we've just got to be a little bit sharper."

Rodney Stuckey had 19 points but missed 9 of 14 from the field and Detroit was outscored by 10 in the second half.

"This is a no-excuse league," Frank said. "We put ourselves in that position and you've got to grind you way out of it. To our guys' credit, we kept on fighting and gave ourselves a chance. But the objective is to try to win that game and we came up short."

Knight had nine assists in the first meeting with Denver, but he went 1 for 6 from the field and committed four turnovers. He's been much better than that lately, averaging 24.3 points while hitting 10 of 15 attempts from 3-point range over his last three games.

Lawson scores 26 to lead Nuggets over Pistons

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) The Denver Nuggets have watched this scenario play out a few times already this season - just from the opposite viewpoint.

Ty Lawson had 26 points, seven assists and five rebounds to lead Denver to a 101-94 win over the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday night.

Corey Brewer added 15 points and Andre Iguodala had 12 points and eight rebounds for the Nuggets, who rallied from a slow start in which they trailed by as many as 17 in the first quarter. JaVale McGee also had 12 points for Denver.

"We've had about four or five close games and didn't win," Lawson said. "We've lost a bunch of times when teams came back on us when we were up 17 or 18 points."

This time, the Nuggets trailed 21-4 a little more than five minutes into the game.

"They were the better team the first 7-8 minutes and we couldn't make a shot," Denver coach George Karl said.

So he brought McGee, Brewer and veteran Andre Miller off the bench.

"Our starters, they weren't trying to get good shots. They were kind of going through the motions," Karl added.

The reserves helped Denver pick up the pace and the Pistons couldn't keep up.

"The bench came in and gave us a big lift," Lawson said. "JaVale was dunking, Corey was stealing the ball and getting easy layups and Andre was running the show."

The Nuggets led 48-42 at the half after outscoring the Pistons 31-17 in the second quarter - including 20-6 in the final seven minutes of the first half.

"It can be very frustrating. But I thought we came out and played very well, but you've got to play all four quarters and you've got to give Denver credit," Detroit rookie guard Kyle Singler said. "They played well, kept with it. They fought. It was a good game. We just came up short at the end."

Brandon Knight had 20 points and five assists for the Pistons. Jason Maxiell added 18 points, six blocks and six rebounds, and Rodney Stuckey scored 17 points.

"We got off to a great start. You're not going to win a game 150-14," Detroit coach Lawrence Frank said. "I think the key is, when they made their run, even the last four minutes of the first quarter, the key is this: a team's going to make a run. It's the mistakes we made and how they got them. With that, the mistakes, they multiplied, they came in succession so they become a little bit deflating."

The Nuggets maintained a six- to nine-point lead for most of the second half.

After Stuckey pulled the Pistons within two on a layup with 7:27 remaining, Miller's three-point play with 7:11 left and Brewer's 3-pointer with 6:45 to go put the Nuggets up 82-74.

Danilo Gallinari hit a 3-pointer with 1:48 left to give the Nuggets a 96-89 lead before Lawson's driving layup with 1:15 remaining pushed it to 98-89.

McGee's breakaway dunk in the first half tied it at 41 with 3:17 left in the second and Lawson hit a layup with 2:12 remaining in the first half to give Denver its first lead of the game, 43-41.

Detroit raced off to fast start and led 21-4 with 5:22 left in the first quarter after Greg Monroe hit a pair of free throws.

NOTES: It was the fourth game of a five-game road trip for Denver, which has also played seven of its last eight on the road. "It seems like it has been a six-week road trip," Nuggets coach George Karl said before the game. "Might have been." ... The stands at the Palace of Auburn Hills were less than half full and the crowd was announced at 10, 265. ... 90's Hip Hop trio "Naughty By Nature" performed at halftime.

Notebook: Nuggets 101, Pistons 94

THE FACTS: Point guard Ty Lawson scored 26 points, 16 in the second half, leading the Denver Nuggets to a 101-94 win over the slumping Detroit Pistons at The Palace of Auburn Hills Tuesday. Corey Brewer added 15 points for the Nuggets, who overcame an early 17-point deficit and defeated the Pistons for the sixth consecutive time. Brandon Knight scored 20 points while Jason Maxiell scored a season-high 18 points and made a career-high tying six blocks.

QUOTABLE: "We're way behind as far as the basketball we want to play but we're finding a way to stay around .500. With this early schedule, it's not favorable, but we're sticking around .500. If we can stay .500 or better going into the New Year, then we have an opportunity to gain some momentum."

THE STAT: 38. Nuggets backups Miller, Brewer and JaVale McGee combined for 38 points on 16-for-24 shooting. McGee scored all but two of his points in the second quarter, when Denver had a 31-17 advantage. Overall, Denver's reserves outscored the Pistons bench 42-33.

TURNING POINT: Sparked by McGee and Lawson, the Nuggets took over the lead with a 15-3 run to finish the first half. McGee scored the first six points of the outburst, including a steal and fast-break slam to give Denver its first lead. Lawson rode the wave of momentum with two layups and a pair of free throws. The Pistons shot 1-for-9 and made three of their eight second-quarter turnovers during that five-minute stretch.

QUOTABLE II: "The bench came in and gave us a good lift. JaVale was dunking everything, Corey Brewer was getting steals and easy baskets and Andre was controlling the tempo. They helped us get back in the game and we took it from there."

HOT: Brewer is averaging 17.6 points over his last five games. He made three of his five 3-point attempts, providing a much-needed outside threat, as his teammates went 3-for-12 from long range. His hot streak has lifted his season average to 11.7 points per game, tops among the second unit.

NOT: Pistons center Greg Monroe had 27 points and 10 rebounds in the first meeting between the clubs but with Detroit playing for the fourth time in five nights, his tank was empty. He made just one basket in nine attempts, despite grabbing five offensive rebounds, and also committed five turnovers. He was coming off a 22-points performance against Philadelphia Monday.

ROOKIE WATCH: Detroit center Andre Drummond had seven points and 11 rebounds, four more rebounds than he grabbed in the previous three games. Starting shooting guard Kyle Singler had no life in his legs, scoring nine points on 4-for-12 shooting. He went 2-for-8 in the second half.

NOTABLE: The Nuggets are 2-2 on their current road trip, which ends in Minnesota Wednesday. ... Detroit out-rebounded the Nuggets, the league's No. 2 rebounding team, 51-37. ... Denver is averaging 19 fast-break points in the last 10 games. ... The schedule has not been kind to either club. The Pistons have played 24 games, more than any other team, while Denver has played just six home games. ... The Pistons had a 14-game home winning streak against the Nuggets snapped two seasons ago and didn't play them at The Palace last season. ... Detroit has faced three of the league's top five offensive rebounders in its last four games, Cleveland's Anderson Varejao (6.0), Denver's Kenneth Faried (4.2) and Chicago's Joakim Noah (4.1). Faried didn't have an offensive rebound Tuesday.
