Warriors-Pistons Preview

The Detroit Pistons have played some outstanding defense since their franchise-worst start, especially at home.

Detroit will look to win six straight at The Palace of Auburn Hills for the first time in nearly five years Wednesday night against a Golden State Warriors team opening a season-high seven-game trip.

Since stumbling out of the block with eight losses, the Pistons (6-13) have regained their footing by surrendering 91.7 points per game on 40.6 percent shooting.

Jason Maxiell had five of Detroit's 13 blocks, the team's most since 2007, as it opened a three-game homestand with Monday's 89-79 victory over Cleveland. The Pistons are limiting opponents to 86.0 points per game and 38.9 percent from the field during their surge at Auburn Hills.

"We're doing the right things - I'm not quite sure what they are," guard Kyle Singler told the Pistons' official website. "You can break it down to little things. But the big thing is we're just getting stops consistently and guys are putting forth a good amount of effort. In my opinion, we didn't really change much."

The Pistons will try to keep that momentum going as they go for their first six-game home winning streak since a seven-game run March 14-April 4, 2008.

"Letting teams know it's going to be tough to get a win at The Palace, that's the type of mentality we want to have," said point guard Brandon Knight, who is averaging 19.5 points - 6.0 more than his season mark - and 4.0 assists in the last four home games. "We also want to take that mentality with us on the road."

The Warriors (10-7) are in a similar position as they're coming off a 102-94 loss to Orlando on Monday that ended their five-game home winning streak.

Golden State was outscored by eight in the fourth quarter in being denied its first four-game run in coach Mark Jackson's tenure, but the Warriors are now focused on improving their 4-4 road mark.

"Just a disappointing loss, but we'll learn from it and get better," said Jackson, whose team is traveling to play an Eastern Conference club for the first time after taking four of five such matchups at home.

"Look forward to going on the road, but certainly we didn't play our brand of basketball."

However, Warriors point guard Stephen Curry is playing some of the best ball of his career. He's tallied 20 or more points in each of the last four games - shooting 15 for 28 from 3-point range - and has handed out 10 or more assists in three straight contests for the first time.

A sprained right ankle sidelined Curry for the last game versus Detroit on Jan. 15, when David Lee finished with 24 points to lead Golden State to a 99-91 road win.

The Pistons had won four straight and 15 of 16 at home in the series.

Warriors pull away to beat Pistons 104-97

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) In a battle of young backcourts, the Golden State Warriors were an easy winner over the Detroit Pistons.

Klay Thompson (27 points) and Stephen Curry (22) outscored Detroit's Brandon Knight and Kyle Singler 49-7, and Golden State posted a 104-97 victory Wednesday night. Singler and Knight went a combined 2 for 16 from the floor, while their Warrior counterparts hit 16 of 28, including nine 3-pointers.

"The numbers tell a big part of the story. Your guards get outscored 49-7, it is going to be tough to win," Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said. "That's just a bad night."

The Warriors, starting a seven-game road trip against the Eastern Conference, snapped Detroit's five-game winning streak at home. Golden State has now won two straight games in Detroit after losing 25 of 29.

"That was a great effort, especially in the second half to play it out," Golden State coach Mark Jackson said. "We had some breakdowns at the end, but we ended up with a victory. We'll learn from those, but I'd much rather be learning from a win rather than a loss."

Curry added 10 assists, his fourth straight 20-10 game, while David Lee had 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Warriors.

"What I love right now is that Steph is in total control out there on the floor," Jackson said. "When things get crazy, I don't feel like I need to call a timeout, because I'm so comfortable with his ability to run this basketball team."

Tayshaun Prince was the only Pistons starter to reach double figures, but four reserves scored at least 10, including 17 from Rodney Stuckey and 15 points and 12 rebounds from rookie Andre Drummond in a career-high 31 minutes.

"We knew that Golden State had great shooters on their team, so if you leave them open for a split second, they are going to knock the shot down," Drummond said. "We let some things slip away and played out of character. Moving forward, we have to nip some of that in bud."

Golden State looked like it would take control early, jumping out to a 19-7 lead, but neither team could shoot well enough to hang on to any sustained advantage in the first half. The Warriors hit 35 percent from the floor in the half, but that was better than Detroit's 33.9 percent and enough to take a slim 40-38 advantage into the intermission.

The Warriors, though, scored 27 points in the first eight minutes of the third. Thompson scored 14 points in the burst, and Curry added nine. Thompson kept it going, finishing the period by blocking Greg Monroe's jumper from behind, then hitting a 3-pointer to give Golden State a 79-61 advantage going into the fourth.

"A 39-point quarter is just unacceptable," Frank said. "We let two really good shooters get comfortable, and you saw what happened. We did too many things on both ends of the floor that were nothing that we've ever rehearsed in practice."

Thompson thought the run had more to do with Golden State's offensive pace than Detroit's defense.

"We played their pace a little bit in the first half, but we started playing at our tempo in the third quarter," he said. "We got fast-break points and early offense. I was making shots and my teammates kept finding me. I just played catch and shoot."

Two dunks by Drummond got Detroit within 83-72, but Thompson answered with a long jumper. Detroit appeared out of the game, but the Pistons hit seven straight shots to pull within 98-95 with a minute to play. Golden State, though, put the game away from the free throw line.

"We didn't do our best job of closing out that game - we have to put the final nail in the coffin," the Warriors' Jarrett Jack said. "There are teams that are going to be able to come back when we let them linger around."

Notes: Knight, Singler and Stuckey were 0 for 9 in the first half. ... Wednesday marked the 90th birthday of William Davidson, who owned the Pistons from 1974 until his death in 2009. Davidson built the Palace of Auburn Hills, which opened in 1989, with private funds. In 2004, his teams, the Pistons, Detroit Shock and Tampa Bay Lightning, simultaneously held the NBA, WNBA and NHL championships. Davidson's son held a party at Wednesday's game in his father's honor. One of the guests was Tom Wilson, former CEO of Palace Sports and Entertainment, who now holds a similar job with Mike Ilitch's Olympia Entertainment.

THE FACTS: Shooting guard Klay Thompson scored a season-high 27 points, including five 3-pointers in the third quarter, as the Golden State Warriors defeated the Detroit Pistons 104-97 at The Palace on Wednesday. Stephen Curry had 22 points and 10 assists -- his fourth straight game of 20 points and 10 assists -- and David Lee added 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Warriors in their opener of a seven-game road swing. Tayshaun Prince had a season-high 24 for the Pistons, who had their five-game home winning streak snapped. Rodney Stuckey had 17 while rookie Andre Drummond chipped in 15 points and 12 rebounds. The Pistons nearly erased a 20-point deficit in the fourth but lost for the third time in four games.

QUOTABLE: "We did a great job of finding each other in transition and playing smart basketball. We had some bad turnovers but we also took the ball to the rim and we're a great shooting team when we take it to the rim at first. It opens up so much on the perimeter."

THE STAT: 84. The Warriors have two reserves -- forward Carl Landry and guard Jarrett Jack -- averaging double figures. Their bench was quiet Wednesday, contributing just 20 points on 7-for-25 shooting, as Landry and Jack combined for 15 points. Jack had averaged 17.7 points in the previous three games. The starting five was able to fill the void, scoring the other 84 points with three players contributing at least 20.

TURNING POINT: Thompson and Curry shot 3-for-9 from the field during the first half but combined for six 3-pointers in the first eight minutes of the second half, turning a 40-38 lead into a 15-point spread. Thompson made four of his five third-quarter 3-pointers during that stretch while Curry had two from long range, including a contested 25-footer, and an old-fashioned three-point play. A Thompson 3-pointer on the fast break after Curry stole the ball from Greg Monroe ended the 27-point explosion and gave Golden State a 67-52 lead. The Warriors eventually lifted the lead to 20 points and held off Detroit's late charge.

QUOTABLE II: "He's in total control out there on the floor. When things get crazy, there's no need for me to call a timeout because I feel confident and comfortable with his ability to run this team. He's playing at a whole different level than he's ever played at. It's more to do with his health than anything. This is what we expected from him."
-- Coach Mark Jackson on Curry, who was slowed much of last season with an ankle injury.

HOT: Curry's 20-10 streak is the longest by a Warrior since Tim Hardaway did it in December of 1992. He had 17 points and seven assists after halftime and made three of his four steals in the half. He also held Brandon Knight to four points on 1-for-10 shooting. Curry is now averaging 19.1 points and 6.6 assists, placing him in the league's top 15 in both categories.

NOT: Detroit center Monroe is averaging a team-best 15.4 points but he's failed to reach double figures in four of the last five games. Monroe only attempted six shots and made four turnovers Wednesday before being benched in the fourth quarter.

ROOKIE WATCH: Detroit center Drummond had 15 points and 12 rebounds, his second consecutive 12-rebound performance. But starting guard Kyle Singler scored just three points. Golden State forward Harrison Barnes was held to 10 points and reserve Draymond Green, an All-American at Michigan State last season, scored two points in 12 minutes playing in his home state.

NOTABLE: Detroit has a 25-6 record in the last 31 meetings at home against Golden State but the Warriors have won the last two. ... The Pistons held opponents to 40.6 percent shooting in their previous 11 games but Golden State shot 45.3 percent. ... Detroit is giving up an average of 84.3 points in its victories, compared to 101.3 points in its losses. ... The Warriors won for the first time this season while get out-rebounded. ... Golden State will play six more Eastern Conference opponents during its road trip. "It's a great opportunity for us to bond and to make a statement," Jackson said. ... Prince's previous high this season was 18 points. ... All four of the Pistons reserves who played reached double figures.
