Chris Paul wasn't pleased with how the Los Angeles Clippers played during their recent road trip.

Returning home to face his struggling former team may be what Los Angeles needs to break out of its slump.

The Clippers look to end a three-game losing streak while dealing the New Orleans Hornets an eighth straight defeat Monday night.

After knocking off San Antonio for its sixth consecutive win to start its trip, Los Angeles dropped the final three games, including Saturday's 104-93 loss at Atlanta.

Blake Griffin totaled 22 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists while Paul finished with 19 points and seven assists for the Clippers (8-5), who lost three straight just once all of last season.

"It's a terrible road trip for us, especially with all of them being winnable games," Paul said. "I think what we've learned from it is that it's not as easy as it looks."

Los Angeles' vaunted bench also was held in check over the last two games, scoring 24 points in Friday's loss to Brooklyn and 34 on Saturday while shooting a combined 36.5 percent over those contests.

The Clippers' average of 40.0 points from their reserves ranks fourth in the league.

Jamal Crawford, the team's leading scorer and sixth man, scored 12 points Saturday and is shooting 35.8 percent over his last four games. Paul said the Clippers can't always rely on their reserves to pick up the slack.

"That's unusual for us because usually our first team is the one that gets jumped on and it's our bench that brings us back into the game," Paul told the team's official website. "It's a long season. The bench can't bail us out every night."

Paul, who spent his first six seasons with the Hornets, did his own damage in three games against his former team last season, averaging 24.7 points and 10.7 assists as the Clippers won the last two meetings at home.

He scored 33 points, dished out 13 assists and had eight steals in Los Angeles' 107-98 win in the last matchup April 22.

New Orleans' rebuilding effort has gotten tougher with the absences of former Clipper Eric Gordon - who came over in the Paul trade - and No. 1 overall pick Anthony Davis, who has missed four consecutive games with a stress reaction in his left ankle and six overall due to injury.

Davis could possibly be out until January, which doesn't bode well for the Hornets (3-9), whose skid reached seven after a 102-84 loss Sunday at Denver.

Brian Roberts scored a team-high 17 points off the bench while Ryan Anderson added 16.

Rookie Austin Rivers, shooting just 29.6 percent, finished 2 for 10 from the field and scored five points.

"We are having problems right now," said Greivis Vasquez, who scored six points after netting a career-high 25 in Friday's loss to Phoenix. "We are just embarrassed."

New Orleans, which concludes its four-game road trip Monday, shot 38.8 percent and committed 14 turnovers, including six by Vasquez.

"The NBA is a cruel league," coach Monty Williams said. "They try to embarrass you every night and that's what you saw (Sunday)."

The Paul-led Hornets won 15 of the previous 16 matchups before dealing the point guard to the Clippers prior to last season.

Hornets shut down Griffin in win over Clippers

LOS ANGELES (AP) On a night when Blake Griffin had the worst offensive performance of his brief but eventful NBA career with the Los Angeles Clippers, Greivis Vazquez's work at the offensive end combined to give the New Orleans Hornets a positive end to an ugly road trip.

Vasquez had 25 points and 10 assists Monday night, and the Hornets' big men took Griffin completely out of the game en route to a 105-98 victory that ended the Hornets' seven-game losing streak.

"It's been tough for us the whole week, and at the end of the road trip we get this win. It's going to build some confidence, especially with a young team like this," Vasquez said. "We came out here with a mission. We didn't care who we were going to play. We just wanted to compete and show who we are."

Griffin made only one of nine shots in 35 minutes, finishing with a career-low four points and six rebounds before fouling out with 2:36 left in the game. It marked only the fourth time the two-time All-Star failed to reach double digits in scoring in 173 NBA regular season and playoff games.

The Hornets weren't quite as physical with Griffin as they were last season - at least there were no flagrant fouls this time on him. In the previous meeting on April 22 at Los Angeles, Robin Lopez was assessed a flagrant 2 for hooking Griffin around the neck on an attempted breakaway layup. On March 22 at New Orleans, Jason Smith was called for a flagrant 2 for bodyslamming Griffin to the floor on a fast break and was suspended for two games - including the rematch four nights later at Staples Center.

"I thought Ryan did a decent job of frustrating Blake tonight, just by bodying him. But let's be honest, sometimes guys just miss shots. So I won't say it was all our defense," Hornets coach Monty Williams said. "Our team concept was to load up on him for just make it hard. You've got to run different guys at him because he's a phenomenal player."

Griffin, the No.1 overall pick in the 2009 draft, was held to three baskets on four occasions - including Game 7 of the Clippers' victorious first-round series against the Grizzlies, when he was 3 for 11 with just eight points in the 82-72 clincher at Memphis.

"I'm comfortable, but I just missed shots tonight," Griffin said. "It's on me. "It's not because of our offense. It's not anybody else's fault. It's my fault. I had open shots, I had post-ups - I mean, I shot the ball nine times. I just missed them."

Anderson and Jason Smith each scored 17 points for the Hornets and Austin Rivers added 14. Anthony Davis, the top overall pick in the June draft, missed his fifth straight game because of an injured left ankle.

Caron Butler made a career-high nine 3-pointers on 15 attempts and finished with 33 points, becoming the first Clipper this season to score at least 30. The two teams combined for 33 3-pointers on 62 attempts.

Chris Paul had 20 points and eight assists for Los Angeles. Willie Green, who played for the Hornets two seasons ago before spending last season with Atlanta as a free agent, had 10 points.

Anderson led New Orleans to a 51-44 halftime advantage with 11 points. Neither team led by more than five until the Hornets opened up a 39-28 lead with an 8-0 run capped by Anderson's 3-pointer with 5:58 left in the second quarter.

"Our defense was terrible. It's almost embarrassing," Paul said. "Teams feel like they can come down and score on us every night. Guys can't look in our eyes and feel like they can get by us. We have to take more pride in our play."

Griffin missed his first seven shots before Green found him above the rim for an alley-oop dunk that cut the Hornets' lead to 68-65 with 4:34 left in the third quarter. Butler tied it 33 seconds later with a 3-pointer, but the Hornets took an 11-point lead into the fourth and stretched it to 94-77 - their biggest of the game - on Vasquez's fifth and final 3-pointer with 6:41 remaining.

The Clippers got as close as 101-95 with two free throws by Griffin, a 3-pointer by Paul and two more foul shots by Jamal Crawford with 1:38 left. But their perimeter shooting went cold after that.

"We lost to a very - let me choose my words - not very talented team, but well-coached," Paul said. "I've watched every game that they've played. And one thing about Monty is, he's going to have them playing hard. So waiting for the fourth quarter to turn it on was going to be tough for us. Greivis Vasquez was feeling good tonight. I think he's on his way to his first All-Star game."

Eric Gordon, who has played in only nine games for the Hornets since they acquired him from the Clippers with Al-Farouq Aminu and Chris Kaman in the Chris Paul deal, has yet to play this season due to soreness in his surgically repaired right knee. Gordon hasn't played for New Orleans since April 22, when he had 17 points, six turnovers and shot 4 for 13 from the field in the Hornets' 107-98 loss the Clippers at Los Angeles.

NOTES: Butler's previous career-high for 3-pointers was five, on three occasions - the last time Nov. 12, 2012 at Minnesota. ... The Hornets are 23-54 and the Clippers are 48-32 since Paul switched teams. He is averaging 23.5 points and 10 assists in the four games he's played against his former team, two of which the Clippers have won. ... Lopez, who blocked four shots in each of his previous three games, had one against the Clippers to extend his streak to 16 games.

THE FACTS: The Hornets spoiled a record-breaking shooting night for Caron Butler and the Clippers, giving L.A. a taste of its own 3-point medicine in the 105-98 victory Monday night at Staples Center. The win ended a seven-game losing streak for New Orleans and extended L.A.'s string of losses to four straight.

THE STAT: The 33 combined 3-pointers by the Hornets and Clippers is the second-most in NBA history and the most for a regulation game. The Clippers made a franchise-record 18 baskets from beyond the arc on 37 attempts (48.6 percent). Butler, in his 11th season, established a career best and franchise mark by making nine 3s on 15 tries. Unfortunately for the Clippers, the Hornets were even more efficient from 3-point distance, going 15-for-25 (60 percent). Greivis Vasquez (5-for-8), Ryan Anderson (5-for-9) and Austin Rivers (3-for-4) were the main sharpshooters for New Orleans.

QUOTABLE: "When Ryan gets going like that, it opens it up for everybody. It was good to see Austin knock down a couple, Greivis hit some, and Caron Butler was amazing."

TURNING POINT: After trailing for much of the game, the Clippers soared back behind the hot shooting of Butler, who sank his eighth 3-pointer to tie the score, 68-68, with 4:01 remaining in the third quarter. His bucket also tied the previous franchise record for 3s in a game (16). The Clippers seemed to relax just enough for the Hornets to close out the quarter on a 13-2 run and then score the first basket of the fourth to move ahead, 83-70. The Clippers managed to trim the deficit to six and had the ball with just over a minute remaining, but missed four 3s on one possession and another on the next. New Orleans was able to slam the door with four free throws in the final 15 seconds.

HOT: Butler finished with 33 points, his highest-scoring game since netting 39 as a member of Washington on the final day of the 2008-09 regular season. He was especially hot in the third quarter, scoring 18 points on 6-for-8 shooting from 3-point range. His previous career high for 3s in a game was five. Butler's shooting nearly overshadowed another outstanding game by Vasquez, who matched his career high set Friday night by scoring 25 points and also handing out 10 assists. On the downside, he committed a career-high eight turnovers.

NOT: As hot as both teams shot, Clippers forward Blake Griffin had the coldest-shooting game of his three-year career. Griffin shot 1-for-9 from the field and scored four points before fouling out with 2:35 remaining and the Clippers trailing by 11. He established career lows for points, field goals made and shooting percentage.

GOOD MOVE: New Orleans backup forward Jason Smith has shown he won't back down from anyone, not even Griffin. The fifth-year player drew a two-game suspension last season for body-checking Griffin as he went up for a layup in New Orleans. He wasn't as brazen Monday night, but was equally tough. Williams sensed Smith's ability to throw Griffin off track, leaving him on the floor for a season-high 29 minutes. Smith came through on both ends, scoring 17 points and drawing most of the fouls that led to Griffin's early departure.

BAD MOVE: Smith got after Clippers' backup forward Matt Barnes, as well, causing Barnes to throw out an elbow in the third quarter that was eventually ruled a Flagrant 1 foul. While Smith was converting the two free throws, Barnes was called for a technical foul while arguing with referee Marc Davis. Smith made that foul shot as well, then scored a layup on the added possession for a five-point trip down the floor, extending the lead to 81-70. The Clippers were also slow to get back on defense several times, even on made field goals. During one first-half possession, L.A. reserve guard Eric Bledsoe hung on the rim after dunking an offensive rebound. While he was still elevated, the Hornets took off on a fast break and Al-Farouq Aminu scored on a slam of his own.

NOTABLE: Griffin went scoreless in the first half, only the second time in his career he went with a point during a half. The other time was in the second half of a victory against the Wizards on March 12, 2011. ... Jamal Crawford went 2-for-2 from the free-throw line, establishing a new career high with 38 consecutive free throws. ... The NBA record for combined 3-pointers in a game is 36 during an overtime game between Golden State and Orlando on March 11, 2011. Anderson played for Orlando in that game and made 1 of his 4 shots from long range. ... It marked just the fourth time in NBA history that both teams combined to make 15 or more 3s in the same game.
