While the Sacramento Kings are the worst-shooting team in the NBA, only one team is allowing opponents to shoot better than the Portland Trail Blazers.

These teams are both 2-5 and looking for answers on opposite ends of the court as they meet Tuesday night at Sleep Train Arena.

Sacramento is shooting 40.1 percent from the field overall and shot 40.0 percent in Sunday's 103-90 road loss to the Lakers. Starting guard Tyreke Evans is emblematic of those woes at a career-low 36.9 percent - a big reason why his scoring average is also a career-worst 11.4 points.

"I'm working at it every game," Evans said. "I'm just trying to find a way to be aggressive and still play my game but I just got to do a better job of making shots and running our offense."

Portland's opponents are shooting 49.8 percent to rank ahead of only Cleveland. The Trail Blazers have allowed five foes to connect on at least half of their shots through seven games.

That defense improved a bit Monday when Atlanta shot 44.3 percent and closed the game on a 10-0 run in handing Portland its fourth straight loss, 95-87.

Offensively, the Trail Blazers shot 36.1 percent and finished with a season low in points. They rallied to take the lead after trailing by as many as 15 points.

"We keep putting ourselves in holes," guard Wesley Matthews said. "We can't keep doing that to ourselves."

Sacramento coach Keith Smart will once again have to improvise his lineup with DeMarcus Cousins finishing his two-game ban for confronting Spurs TV analyst Sean Elliott in a hostile manner following a 97-86 home loss to San Antonio on Friday night.

Smart was without Cousins and suspended rookie Thomas Robinson on Sunday. Travis Outlaw made his first start of the season and forward Jason Thompson had 15 points and 10 rebounds as he shifted to center in place of Cousins, and Smart will likely use that same lineup.

Robinson will come off the bench after completing his two-game ban for a vicious elbow to the throat of Detroit's Jonas Jerebko.

"We'll do the same thing, obviously not having DeMarcus Cousins for another game, but we'll get Thomas Robinson back, so that gives us another energy guy, and another big man," Smart said.

The antidote to the Kings' offensive woes could be Jimmer Fredette, who scored a team-high 18 points Friday, although most were after the outcome was decided. Still, the second-year guard's 64.0 percent shooting has made an impression on Smart.

"It's obvious that young man has worked his tail off," Smart said. "That young man's efficiency rating has gone up, and I've got to make minutes on the floor for him now because he's too positive right now with what he's doing."

While Smart is mulling his options without Cousins, Portland coach Terry Stotts has few options with his bench producing a league-low 11.9 points per game. Blazers reserves have been outscored 89-10 by their counterparts over their last two contests.

These teams split four meetings last season, with the home team winning every time.

Trail Blazers top Kings 103-86 to end 4-game skid

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) Modest and unassuming off the court, Damian Lillard has no problem taking charge when placed in a leadership role for the Portland Trail Blazers.

The rookie point guard led the way Tuesday night in a game the Blazers needed badly for morale purposes. Lillard had 22 points and nine assists to help Portland stop a four-game losing streak with a 103-86 victory over the short-handed Sacramento Kings.

"We had lost four games, so this one was really important," Lillard said. "It felt like a game we had to win."

Even though Lillard had a strong pre-draft workout for Sacramento, Thomas Robinson was chosen by the Kings at No. 5 overall and Lillard went to Portland as the sixth pick. Nicolas Batum is grateful that Lillard was still available.

"Damian is the perfect fit for us," said Batum, who had 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists. "He knows how to play and already plays like a veteran. He scores, he passes, he attacks, and he plays defense."

Against the Kings, patience in making the right play and taking the appropriate shot were the most noticeable aspects of Lillard's game. He shot 7 of 10 from the field, including 5 of 6 on 3-pointers.

"Last game I didn't shoot the ball so well, but I took the same shots. They just fell tonight," Lillard said. "I'm really comfortable. I have to give a lot of credit to them (his teammates) for allowing me to be comfortable because they've been in the league a few years."

Portland used a strong third quarter to build its lead to 16 points and pushed the cushion to 22 early in the fourth. The Blazers outrebounded the Kings 44-33 and connected on 14 of 27 attempts from 3-point range.

"This is a team that can make 3s. They take a lot of 3s," Kings coach Keith Smart said. "If they're hot and making shots, you're going to have a tough cover."

LaMarcus Aldridge scored 19 points for Portland and Wesley Matthews had 18. J.J. Hickson added 10 points and 13 rebounds.

James Johnson scored 16 and Marcus Thornton 14 for the Kings, who dropped their third straight. Jimmer Fredette had 13 points and a career-high six assists, while Robinson scored 12.

The Kings played their second consecutive game without leading scorer and rebounder DeMarcus Cousins, suspended following a verbal altercation last week with San Antonio Spurs television announcer Sean Elliott. Cousins lost an appeal Tuesday to reduce the suspension to one game.

It didn't help that the Kings were further depleted, missing starting point guard Isaiah Thomas and backup Aaron Brooks, who injured his left ankle in the first quarter and didn't return.

A rookie from Weber State, Lillard has scored 20 points or more in five of Portland's eight games.

"In college he was an aggressive player who was a high-volume scorer," Fredette said. "He's doing that here in this league as well. His game is translating very well to the NBA."

Portland opened the fourth quarter by outscoring the Kings 8-2, hiking its lead to 22 points on a pair of free throws by Matthews. The margin was never less than 17 the rest of the game.

Lillard continued to shoot well in the third quarter following a productive first half. He made all three shots, including a pair of 3s, and had eight points in the third for the Blazers, who outscored Sacramento 28-16 to assume a 74-58 lead heading into the fourth.

"Except for the beginning of the second half, it was a complete game," Portland coach Terry Stotts said. "We got off to a good start in the first half and we did a lot of good things defensively. We moved the ball. It wasn't 48 minutes. But after we gave up those five easy baskets in the second half, we tightened things down and did a nice job defensively and we were able to get out and run."

Trailing by four, the Blazers took control with a 19-2 run over a 5-minute stretch in the third quarter. Batum had seven points, including a corner 3 that capped the spurt and put Portland in front 69-56 with 2:12 left.

Lillard got going early with a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter and had 14 points at halftime, helping the Blazers to a 46-42 lead. Fredette had 10 points and four assists for the Kings.

THE FACTS: The short-handed Sacramento Kings came out flat in the third quarter and the Portland Trail Blazers ran them out of the gym. After leading by just four at the intermission, the Blazers outscored the Kings by 13 in the second half for the 103-86 victory.

With Kings starter Isaiah Thomas missing the game due to personal reasons and reserve Aaron Brooks going down early with an injured left ankle, rookie Damian Lillard scorched the Kings with 22 points and nine assists. All five Blazers starters scored in double-figures against the short-handed Kings in the win.

The Kings bench, led by Marcus Thornton (14), Jimmer Fredette (13) and Thomas Robinson (12), scored a total of 46 points.

THE STAT: In their home gym the Kings hit just 1-of-11 attempts from behind the arc, including 0-for-6 in the first half. On the flip side, the Blazers went 14-for-27 (52 percent) in the win.

TURNING POINT: After a competitive first half that ended with a 46-42 Blazers lead, the Kings fell apart in the third quarter. Portland used a balance attack to outscore the home team 28-16 and take a 16-point lead to the fourth.

QUOTABLE II: "Really I'm not trying to fight for it. I'm really more concerned with us winning games. I think (that) as long as we are winning games, then that means I've played well and it will give me a chance to be in that fight." -- Lillard on his early push to be a Rookie of the Year candidate

HOT: Lillard was a star tonight for Portland. The rookie out of Weber State finished the game with 22 points, hitting 7-for10 field goal attempts, which included an impressive 5-for-6 from behind the 3-point line.

HOT II: Fredette had a big first half off the bench for the Kings. After coming alive for 18 points Sunday against the Lakers, the second-year guard out of BYU scored 10 of his 13 points and handed out four of his six assists in the game's first 24 minutes.

GOOD MOVE: After falling behind 25-10 early in the first half, Keith Smart went to Fredette and Thornton and the Kings responded with a 24-9 run to tie the game at 34-34.

BAD MOVE: The Kings had no answer for the Trail Blazers in the third quarter.

NOTABLE: Kings starters Isaiah Thomas (personal reasons) and DeMarcus Cousins (suspension) were out, while veteran reserve Francisco Garcia missed the game as well while battling the flu.
