Spurs-Trail Blazers Preview

The San Antonio Spurs have lost seven straight road games to the Portland Trail Blazers, but last season's lone visit to the Rose Garden was more notable for who wasn't on the court than for who played.

The Spurs continue their four-game trip Saturday night as they try to hand the Trail Blazers a third straight loss.

San Antonio (5-1) is off to the best start in the Western Conference, but Portland (2-3) has won 10 of the last 14 meetings including all seven at home in that span.

The Spurs took two of three meetings overall last season, but the lone defeat was a 137-97 road loss on Feb. 21 that ended an 11-game win streak and was the most lopsided contest in the 145-game history of this series.

There was a simple explanation for why the Trail Blazers led by as many as 48 points. Manu Ginobili was injured, and coach Gregg Popovich chose to rest stars Tony Parker and Tim Duncan since his club was playing its third game in four nights.

That's the same scenario facing Popovich this time after the Spurs won 97-86 at Sacramento on Friday, but there's no indication on whether the coach will sit anyone out.

Duncan had 23 points and 12 boards even though he was one of several players who were ill Friday. Parker was also sick and had a season-low five points while Stephen Jackson sat out with the flu.

Patty Mills made 8 for 9 shots for 18 points to help pick up the slack with Parker hampered.

"He was real big; he helped us get this win," said Popovich said about Mills. "We needed points from other players and Patty got it done for us."

Mills will face the Blazers in Portland for the first time after spending his first two seasons with the franchise.

Parker is averaging 5.0 points on 24.0 percent shooting over his last three contests.

This will be the Frenchman's first matchup with promising Blazers guard Damian Lillard, who is averaging 18.6 points to lead all rookies.

Lillard and the Blazers, however, have lost their last two games by double digits. Portland trailed by as many as 25 points in Thursday's 103-90 home defeat to the Clippers, falling behind by 21 at halftime before a spirited rally fell well short.

"We know when we play like that, with a lot of energy and when we're flying around, playing hard and moving the ball, we know that we can play with one of the best teams in the league," Lillard said. "At the same time, we can't put ourselves in that hole, because we're not that level of team to be able to fight back every time."

First-year coach Terry Stotts admits he is unsure what to expect from his team, which has shot more free throws in each of its last two games.

"I don't know if we have a formula for winning games yet," Stotts said. "We shot more free throws. There have been most games we shoot more free throws and lose."

LaMarcus Aldridge, who will likely match up with Duncan, averaged 25.0 points and 7.0 rebounds in two games last season against the Spurs.

Spurs hold off Blazers 112-109

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) At one point in San Antonio's comeback against the Trail Blazers, Stephen Jackson reached out to high-five Gary Neal. Then Tim Duncan gave him an affectionate pat on the head.

This one was Neal's.

Neal came off the bench to score a career-high 27 points, 20 of them in the second half, and the Spurs rallied from a 14-point third quarter deficit to beat Portland 112-109 on Saturday night.

Neal, called upon to help because Tony Parker was out with the flu, played nearly 32 minutes after averaging just 17 in the Spurs' first six games. He also had seven rebounds against Portland.

"He carried us on his back," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said about Neal. "Sometimes a player will do that, and he picked a good time for it."

The Blazers nearly spoiled the night for Neal, hitting four straight 3-pointers to tie it at 109 with 40.5 seconds left, but Portland stumbled from there and was saddled with its third consecutive loss. Nicolas Batum had a career-high 33 points.

Tim Duncan added 22 points and nine rebounds for the Spurs, who snapped a seven-game losing streak at the Rose Garden.

"It was exciting, just to be part of a win like that," said Neal, who is in his third NBA season. "Since I've been here we haven't beat Portland in Portland, so it was a big win. A great, great team win. I'm glad we were able to pull it out in the end."

The Spurs trailed by as many as 14 points in the third quarter but opened the final period with a 14-0 run to go up 87-79.

Rookie Damian Lillard and Batum each hit a 3-pointer to trim Portland's deficit to 105-103 with 1:57 to go. Duncan dunked before Wesley Matthews made a 3-pointer to get the Blazers within one with 1:28 left.

Duncan made a layup, but Batum answered with another 3. Manu Ginobili made a pair of foul shots with 12.9 seconds left to give the lead back to the Spurs. After Batum missed a 3 that would have given Portland the lead, Stephen Jackson went 1 for 2 at the line with 4.4 seconds to go.

Portland star LaMarcus Aldridge missed a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Batum said he felt good about the 3-pointer he missed with 7.8 seconds left.

"We should have won the game before that. I need to make those shots, but we should have won the game before that," he said.

Parker and Duncan weren't feeling well but both played in San Antonio's 97-86 victory over Sacramento on Friday night. Jackson missed that game because of the virus, but returned to face the Blazers. Patty Mills started in Parker's place.

After playing only sparingly in San Antonio's first five games, Mills had 18 points in just over 21 minutes against the Kings. Mills spent two seasons in Portland, which selected him with the 55th overall pick of the 2009 draft.

Against the Blazers Mills finished with seven points.

The Blazers went up 17-10 midway through the opening quarter after Batum's 3-pointer.

Rookie Meyers Leonard's tip-in extended the lead to 26-16, but the Spurs answered with consecutive 3-pointers by Jackson, Ginobili and Neal. Ginobili then made a free throw to tie it at 26.

Lillard, the sixth overall pick in the June draft, took over at the start of the second quarter, scoring eight points in a 10-4 run that put Portland up 42-32. Lillard had a fast-break dunk off a steal and two 3-pointers.

Lillard finished the half with a pull-up jumper to give the Blazers a 52-43 lead at the break.

The Blazers got a scare in the second half when Matthews fell awkwardly under the basket. He was face down on the floor for a while before heading to the locker room. A short time later he returned to the bench, apparently unhurt.

The Spurs kept pressure on the Blazers, closing to 67-64 on Neal's pull-up jumper. Part of the problem for Portland was its reserves, who managed just four points in the game.

Matthews' putback made it 79-71, but Ginobili answered with a quick 10-foot jumper and the Blazers carried a 79-73 lead into the final quarter.

The Spurs opened the quarter with a 14-0 run, pulling even on Neal's jumper and then taking the 81-79 lead on Danny Green's 22-footer. Neal and Green added consecutive 3-pointers to put the Spurs ahead 87-79.

"It was fun beginning the fourth quarter sitting on the bench watching our guys get back in that game. Gary and Danny turned things around for us," Duncan said.

Aldridge finished with a season-high 29 points, seven assists and four blocks for the Blazers. He joins four players with that many points, assists and blocks since the 2006-07 season: Russell Westbrook. Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Ginobili.

NOTES: Some of the players, including Aldridge and San Antonio's Boris Diaw, sported special red, white and blue headbands to honor armed forces veterans. ... Going into the game, San Antonio was allowing opponents an average of 91.7 points a game.

THE FACTS: Manu Ginobili buried two free throws with 12.9 seconds remaining and the Spurs went on to beat the Trail Blazers 112-109 Saturday night in a wild one. After going into the fourth quarter down 79-73, the Spurs opened the final period with a 14-0 run. San Antonio held onto the lead until 40 seconds remaining in the game when Blazers forward Nicolas Batum sunk a 3-pointer to make the score 109-109, but the Spurs would hold on.

QUOTABLE: "Portland did an awesome job of getting back into it, making plays, hitting big shots. But we sustained, and it's a great win for us -- a really great win for us."

THE STAT: San Antonio shot lights out from the field, connecting on 40 of 70 attempts (.571) and going 7-for-18 from beyond the arc (38.9 percent).

TURNING POINT: After three quarters, the Spurs were trailing 79-73. San Antonio then went on a 14-0 run to start the final period. While the Blazers would come back and tie the game, San Antonio would not relinquish the lead.

QUOTABLE II: "[San Antonio] got hot. They were playing small ball all night, which opens up the court. One of the things when you play small is it allows you to score points. It becomes a different type of game."

HOT: The Spurs' bench scored 63 points. Reserve Gary Neal led the Spurs with a career-high 27 points, Ginobili scored 17 points and Stephen Jackson added 13 points.

NOT: The Blazers' bench, by contrast, scored only four points. Rookie center Meyers Leonard had two points and Sasha Pavlovic had two points. Four other Blazers reserves saw action (Ronnie Price, Luke Babbitt, Will Barton and Jared Jeffries) but none of them were able to put the ball into the basket.

GOOD MOVE: Blazers rookie point guard Damian Lillard attacked San Antonio reserve point guard Patty Mills, who was starting in place of Tony Parker (stomach virus). Lillard had another solid night, scoring 20 points and recording six assists.

BAD MOVE: The Spurs turned the ball over a whopping 14 times in the first half. While San Antonio was able to settle down in the second half and turn the ball over only seven more times, the 14 turnovers in the first half was a big part of the reason why Portland was ahead going into the fourth quarter.

NOTABLE: Lillard became only the fourth player since 1985 to record 100 points and 40 assists in his first six career games, joining John Wall, LeBron James and Damon Stoudamire.
