DALLAS (AP) A chance for another championship ahead of him, Dwyane Wade refused to look back.

No, he said, the answer as quick and forceful as his first step to the basket. He doesn't consider that the Miami Heat should have a 3-0 lead in the NBA finals.

The margin is 2-1, close on the scoreboard even though it doesn't feel that way on the floor. The Heat have repeatedly built double-digit cushions against the Dallas Mavericks, and a late collapse in Game 2 is all that's keeping them from the lead that's never been blown in an NBA series.

"You can't think about stuff like that. Everything in life happens for a reason," Wade said Monday before practicing. "If we come in and we win that game, if we run away with that game, I don't know if our sense of urgency is the same in Game 3. Who knows? So our sense of urgency was that way for a reason. We lost the game we know we shouldn't. We are up 2-1. That's what we have to focus on and worry about."

The Heat insist the game isn't as easy as Wade and LeBron James are making it look, and the Mavericks refuse to admit they might just be facing a superior foe.

"We're just too stubborn," point guard Jason Kidd said Monday.

Game 4 is Tuesday night, and a Heat victory would put them in position to win a second championship on the Mavericks' floor if they followed that with another one Thursday.

Wade clutched the finals MVP trophy that night five years ago, already a superstar in just his third NBA season, and figured he would be back plenty of times. Instead, the Heat never truly contended again - partially because they were clearing salary cap space for last summer - until James and Bosh agreed to join him in Miami.

With that trio together, the Heat could win multiple titles, but Wade doesn't want to wait.

"Nothing is promised to none of us," he said. "You never know what's going to happen in this game. If you get your opportunity, you have to seize it."

That's why he and the Heat could be disappointed about where the series stands. They led by 12 in Game 1, were up 15 with 7:14 to go in Game 2, and they had a series of double-digit advantages in Game 3, when it peaked at 14 points. Forcing turnovers on defense that sent Wade and James off for fast-break dunks, it's often appeared they could run away from the Mavericks whenever they wanted.

Yet Dallas rallied to pull out Game 2 by two points and kept coming back Sunday before falling 88-86. And though they've been playing from behind, the Mavericks remain unconvinced that's where they'll end up.

"I still feel like we're going to be NBA champs this year," center Tyson Chandler said. "It's a hard fight. Nobody said it's going to be easy. I've got the ultimate respect for those guys on the other side.

"It's going to be a tough road, but I feel like we're willing to do it."

The finals have had consecutive games decided by two or fewer points for the first time since 1998, according to research provided to the NBA by the Elias Sports Bureau. So even when his team is building those sizable gaps, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra doesn't expect them to last, adding that regret over not having the 3-0 lead is "wasted energy."

"It's a possession series," Spoelstra said. "So many different things could happen during the course of the game. Make here, a miss here, a rebound here, a loose ball there, that can change the complexion of it."

So can Wade and James. Both are so good they can carry the Heat when the other is struggling. When both are rolling, it might be too much for Dallas' defense to stop.

"Those guys cause problems, and what we've got to do is we've got to approach it, we've got to guard each of those two great players with really all five of our guys," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said.

Kidd had to face the Lakers of Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant in his first finals trip, when his New Jersey Nets were swept by the Lakers in 2002. As good as the Heat's duo is, Kidd said it's not the same helpless feeling for the Mavs.

"This a different scenario, different team," Kidd said. "We were just happy to be there. In this sense, we're not. We feel we can compete with Miami. We wouldn't have been here if we didn't think that."

But the Mavs will have trouble beating them without more help for Dirk Nowitzki. Already a team without a certified No. 2 option, Dallas has looked even weaker in its losses, when James defended top reserve Jason Terry in the fourth quarter and held him without a basket in either.

Nowitzki said the Mavs have to free Terry and their other perimeter shooters for better looks so they "don't chase them down 15 all night long, which takes a lot of energy out of everybody."

And eventually, the Heat won't blow one of those leads, so the Mavs know they can't keep playing from behind.

"It's very frustrating, because you feel like you have to climb out of a hole we shouldn't have," forward Shawn Marion said. "At the same time, because we have to work that much harder to get out of them holes, we're draining so much energy. We've got to play from a lead, and we need to make sure when we do get the lead that we sustain it."

Despite sinus infection, Nowitzki, Mavs tie finals

DALLAS (AP) Dirk Nowitzki lingered on the bench during timeouts, waiting for the horn to sound before getting up. When he made a key shot, he walked back on defense without so much as nodding in celebration.

He was sick. A sinus infection left him coughing and wheezing, his temperature spiking to 101 degrees. At tip-off, he was still worn out from hardly sleeping the night before.

Somehow, he managed the energy to play Game 4 of the NBA finals.

And, like a flu-ridden Michael Jordan in Game 5 of the 1997 finals, he still managed to lead his team to a pivotal victory.

Nowitzki struggled through the first three quarters, then willed himself and his team at the end. He scored 10 of his 21 points and grabbed five of his 11 rebounds in the final period, lifting the Dallas Mavericks to an 86-83 victory over the Miami Heat on Tuesday night that ties the NBA finals at two games.

This best-of-seven series has been reduced to a best-of-three. Game 5 is Thursday night in Dallas, and you can be sure Nowitzki will be suited up again.

"Hopefully I'll get some sleep tonight, take some meds and be ready to go on Thursday," he said, sniffing throughout his postgame interview with his warm-up jacket zipped all the way up, still in his uniform instead of changing into street clothes like the NBA prefers.

This victory guarantees the series will continue with a sixth game in Miami on Sunday. Everyone from the ratings-hungry folks at ABC to basketball fans across the world are probably rooting for a seventh game considering how things are going - three straight games decided by three points or less, with story lines ranging from Nowitzki's heroics to Dwyane Wade's spectacular play to the shrinking confidence of LeBron James.

Start with Nowitzki, since what he's doing is the most dramatic.

He already won Game 2 by scoring the final nine points in a 22-5 rally, making two of his final three baskets left-handed, despite having torn a tendon at the tip of the middle finger in the previous game and struggling to find the right kind of splint. He scored Dallas' final 12 points in a Game 3 rally that came up two points short.

Now there's this effort, when Nowitzki went from making his first three shots to missing 10 of his next 11. He also missed a free throw for the first time since Game 4 of the conference finals, ending a streak of 39 straight.

When his illness was revealed along the way, his poor performance made sense.

When Dallas trailed 74-65 with 10:12 left, it also made sense that Miami would go up 3-1, taking a lead that's never been overcome in the finals and only been blown eight times in any round of the playoffs.

But the Mavericks turned things around, outscoring the Heat 21-9 the rest of the way. Nowitzki was 2 of 5 during the rally, including a right-handed layup that spun in off the backboard with 14.4 seconds left, and made all six of his free throws.

"The average person, you know, has sick days and battling 100-something (fever), it's just tough to get out of bed," Dallas center Tyson Chandler said. "This guy is playing against the best athletes in the world."

In '97, Jordan scored 38 points when he was sick, lifting the Bulls to a victory that gave them a 3-2 series lead over Utah.

Asked to compare the two outings, Nowitzki said: "This is the finals. You have to go out there and compete and try your best for your team. So that's what I did. I never thought about MJ's performance. I was way off, looking at my line." (For the record, his line was 6 of 19, 0 of 2 on 3-pointers, 9 of 10 on free throws.)

Until the final minute, Wade looked as if he was going to be the headliner.

He was a dominant player on both ends of the court, adding a block at the rim of a dunk attempt by the 7-foot-1 Chandler to his growing collection of highlights.

There also was a three-point play on a driving shot that seemed improbable to go in; he was hit across both arms while shooting and had to grab the rim before the ball went through just to keep from tumbling to the ground.

But with 30.1 seconds left, he missed a free throw. With 6.7 seconds left, he fumbled an inbounds pass. He chased it down and got it to Mike Miller for a 3-pointer that would've forced overtime, but it wasn't even close to hitting the rim. Fans could tell how off-target it was and began roaring with delight while the ball was still in the air.

"I was kind of anxious because I saw an opening really fast, trying to get there before I caught the ball," said Wade, who scored 32 points, his fifth time cracking 30 this postseason. "Obviously I would love to have that play back. We would love to have a lot of plays back. It happened. It was unfortunate."

Then there was the LeBron James disappearing act.

"King James" made only 3 of 11 shots - a tip-in during the first quarter, then a 15-foot jumper and a breakaway dunk in the third quarter. Not only did he fail to score in the fourth, he took only one shot while playing all 12 minutes.

He finished with eight points, ending a double-figure scoring streak of 433 consecutive games, regular season and postseason. It was his fewest points ever in the playoffs.

It can't be dismissed as one of those things because of how badly the Heat needed him when things were falling apart. Miami scored a series-low 14 points in the fourth quarter, committing six turnovers and making only 5 of 15 shots. They actually made their first two, so they missed 10 of their final 13.

"I've got to do a better job of being more assertive offensively," said James, who nonetheless contributed nine rebounds and seven assists. "I'm confident in my ability. It's just about going out there and knocking them down."

The Heat came into this game thinking they should have been up 3-0. The Mavs felt they should have been up 2-1.

This game was all about figuring out whether Miami was going to run away with the championship, as many have expected since "The Decision" last summer, or if the plucky veterans from Dallas really had what it took to be champs for the first time.

Now it's 2-2. Both teams are 1-1 at home, and all those stats about who wins under various circumstances seem pretty moot.

"This series is a jump ball," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "These guys live for these type of moments. It's about execution and disposition in the fourth quarter, being able to close out. We have a golden opportunity in the next game."

Jason Terry - who kick-started Dallas' Game 2 comeback with six straight points, but was 0 for 7 in the fourth quarter of the other two games - got the Mavs going with consecutive baskets. He capped the winning rally with two free throws with 6.7 seconds left that forced Miami to need a 3-pointer to force overtime.

Carlisle shook up Dallas' lineup, starting J.J. Barea instead of DeShawn Stevenson, and made Brian Cardinal the primary backup for Nowitzki, instead of Peja Stojakovic. His changes worked out quite nicely.

Stevenson scored 11 points, his first time in double digits since Feb. 2. Cardinal drew a charge on James early and provided seven solid minutes, giving Nowitzki much-needed rest.

Terry scored 17, Shawn Marion 16 and Chandler had 13 points and 16 rebounds. Chandler also played a team-high 43 minutes because his backup, Brendan Haywood, lasted only 3:05 while trying to play through a hip injury that kept him out of Game 3.

NOTES: Nowitzki has had two streaks of 39 straight free throws this postseason. He's 33 of 34 (.971) this series and 163 of 174 (.937) this postseason. ... Chris Bosh scored 24 points. Other than Miami's three superstars, none of the Heat scored more than six. ... Of the past 26 times the finals have been tied at 2, the Game 5 winner has won it all 19 times. Last year was among the exceptions, with the Celtics winning Game 5 and the Lakers taking the last two. ... The 2006 finals between these teams also was tied 2-2, but Miami overcame an 0-2 deficit to win four straight. ... This was only the second time in 140 postseason games that Jason Kidd has gone scoreless.

Heat-Mavericks notebook

THE FACTS: Dirk Nowitzki fought through a 101-degree fever to score 10 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter, including a decisive drive with 14.4 seconds left as Dallas evened the NBA Finals at 2-2 with an 86-83 victory over Miami in Game 4 Tuesday at the American Airlines Center. Dwyane Wade had 32 points, but fumbled away the Heat's final possession.

It was the third consecutive down-to-the-wire thriller, with 15 ties and 12 lead changes. It was also the third straight time Nowitzki figured into the outcome. In Game 2, he drove past Chris Bosh and finished with the left hand for a 95-93 victory. In Game 3, his fadeaway over Udonis Haslem was off the mark in an 88-86 loss. This time, matched up against Haslem again, Nowitzki drove to his right and beat Haslem and Wade to the hoop.

Jason Terry added 17 points (eight in the fourth), Shawn Marion scored 16 and Tyson Chandler had 13 points and 16 rebounds (nine offensive boards) for Dallas, which overcame a nine-point fourth-quarter deficit. Bosh scored 24 for Miami, while LeBron James scored a postseason-low eight points on 3-for-11 shooting.

QUOTABLE: "This is the Finals. You're going to leave it out there. Like I said earlier in the series -- it's June. ... You have to go out there and compete and try your best for your team, so that's what I did."

THE STAT: James had scored in double figures in 434 consecutive games. His teams are now 0-8 in the playoffs when he scores fewer than 15 points.

TURNING POINT: After making his first three shots and scoring the Mavericks' first six points of the game, Nowitzki then missed 10 of his next 11 shots. Dallas didn't hesitate to call his number when it mattered, however, and his drive past Haslem gave the Mavericks an 84-81 lead.

QUOTABLE II: "We'll have to look at the film. Obviously we would like to get him involved. He's a very important piece to what we do. So we'll work to help make it easier for him next game."

HOT: Bosh scored 16 points on 8-for-12 shooting in the first half. Wade scored 19 points on 8-for-10 shooting in the second half.

NOT: Miami turned the ball over six times and scored only 14 points on 33.3 percent shooting (5-for-15) during the fourth quarter. The Heat led 78-73 on Wade's layup with 7:24 remaining, but didn't score again until Bosh made two free throws at the 1:53 mark. Wade missed a potential tying free throw with 30.1 seconds left.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Kelly Clarkson, winner of the inaugural season of American Idol and a Dallas-area native, sang the national anthem. Dallas Cowboys Tony Romo and Jason Witten, NFL rushing king Emmitt Smith and rapper Lil Wayne attended the game.

GOOD MOVE: Carlisle's decision to start J.J. Barea over DeShawn Stevenson for the first time this postseason didn't have its intended effect of speeding up the tempo, but Stevenson gave Dallas a big spark off the bench in the second quarter. He scored all 11 of his points in that period, going 3-for-4 from 3-point range. Barea finished with eight points and four assists.

BAD MOVE: After Terry hit two free throws with 6.7 seconds left to put Dallas up 86-83, Miami called timeout to get possession in the frontcourt. Mike Miller threw the inbounds pass to Wade, but the ball bounced off his hands and the Heat couldn't recover in time to get a clean look.

NOTABLE: Neither team shot the ball well from 3-point distance, with Miami going 2-for-14 and Dallas 4-for-19 from beyond the arc. ... Miami's opponents have scored fewer than 100 points in 18 of 19 games this postseason. ... Nowitzki made 39 consecutive free throws and was 26-for-26 in the Finals before missing with 3:52 left in the third quarter. ... Joel Anthony has now blocked at least one shot in 15 straight postseason games, one shy of Miami's franchise record held by Alonzo Mourning.
