Bulls-Heat Preview

MIAMI (AP) All the Chicago Bulls say they need to do now is something they've already managed 71 times this season, more than any other team in the league.

Win a game.

It's that simple. No need for cluttered thinking now. Even after everything that has gone wrong in the last two games of the Eastern Conference finals against the Miami Heat - who have handed the Bulls their first two-game losing streak since February - Chicago knows it can reclaim the upper hand in the series by winning Game 4 in Miami on Tuesday night.

Thing is, the Heat know that sort of thinking as well, since they had the same thoughts after a Game 1 blowout loss in Chicago.

"All we've done to this point is do exactly what they did at home," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said Monday as practice wound down. "They won the first game at home and we have to find a way in a possession game to come out ahead again tomorrow night. There is not going to be one easy possession in this series."

Chicago can attest to that.

Defense was clearly going to be the norm in this series, with the Bulls and Heat ranking 1-2 in field-goal percentage defense. Chicago has managed 160 points in Games 2 and 3, its lowest two-game total of the season, and keying on reigning NBA MVP Derrick Rose has been the biggest - and most obvious - key. Rose is 15 for 42 from the floor in Chicago's last two losses.

The Heat want Rose to try to do it alone. After all, not wanting to have one star option - and only one star option - is why Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh came together in the first place.

"There's a reason why we're playing together," Wade said. "After so many years of that, you want to do something else. That's the reason we're playing together. But he has a good team. ... He's in a little different world than we were in."

But to hear the Bulls tell it, defense let them down more than offense.

"We have to bring more intensity to the game," Rose said Monday, after the Bulls met at their downtown hotel and took a break from the practice grind. "We have to be the first to the floor, first on the rebounding side. Guards still have to get in and rebound and help the bigs. And we have to play more aggressive on both ends. Way more."

In short, the Bulls will be desperate.

James says there's only one way he and the Heat can answer that.

"We're playing desperate too," James said. "Both teams are playing hard. We're just as desperate as they are to win another game at home."

Sunday was an emotional grind for the Bulls, for so many reasons. It started with questions about an interview Rose gave in which he allegedly said NBA players use performance-enhancing drugs - something he emphatically denied later in the day. Then Joakim Noah used an anti-gay slur in an exchange with a fan during the first quarter, and didn't score another point the rest of the night.

Noah met with NBA officials on Monday, after which he again apologized for his remark.

Oh, on top of it all, the Bulls lost 96-85, which left Noah pointing toward a line Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau has used often this season.

"Thibs always talks about walking through a fire together," Noah said. "That's what it's all about. You win Game 1, there is a lot of love after the game. You lose two, it's like the end of the world. But if we can get this one on Tuesday tied up going home, that would be a good position to be in."

If they're going to tie the series, they need to find a way to contain Bosh. He already has games of 30 and 34 points in this series, the latter coming in Sunday night's win - and he's managed to overcome the memory of his disasterous 1 for 18 shooting night in Chicago earlier this season.

Only two players had a pair of 30-plus nights against the Bulls in the regular season, those being Wade and Portland's LaMarcus Aldridge.

"It is the Eastern Conference finals and it's coming down to will and determination," Bosh said. "I want people to know I want it."

The Heat needed a big night from Bosh in Game 3, if for no other reason than to counter a monster effort from Carlos Boozer, who finished with 26 points and 17 rebounds.

It was the 10th time in Boozer's career that he finished with at least that many points and rebounds in game. Somewhat strangely, his teams are only 5-5 when that happens.

"We're confident," Boozer said. "We're a confident group of guys. We believe in our system and we believe in each other. We believe we can get a win."

The Heat remain the only unbeaten team at home in these playoffs, having won all seven tries so far.

If that holds on Tuesday, they'll be one win away from the NBA finals, and while it may be tempting to look ahead, James says Miami cannot afford that luxury.

"We've got a lot of work to do still," James said. "We're just seizing the moment. Honestly, we've been through a lot this season, a lot of criticism. But we don't care. We just go out and just play our game. Coach Spo gives us a game plan and we just try to go out there and execute it to the best of our ability and get wins."

Heat top Bulls 101-93, move 1 win away from finals

MIAMI (AP) The first 48 minutes of Dwyane Wade's night were unremarkable.

The five minutes of overtime changed all that.

And Miami's Big Three is one win away from playing for the NBA's biggest prize.

LeBron James scored 35 points, Chris Bosh added 22 and Wade perked up to block three shots - one more than Chicago made in overtime, as the Heat topped the Bulls 101-93 in a scintillating Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals on Tuesday night.

Miami will go for the clincher Thursday in Chicago, where the Heat can wrap up their first finals trip since 2006.

"It's one game away," James said. "We're not taking anything for granted."

Derrick Rose scored 23 points for the Bulls, who got 20 apiece from Luol Deng and Carlos Boozer. Chicago has lost three straight games for the first time this season, and afterward, the league's reigning MVP pointed the finger of blame at himself.

"It's not over," said Rose, who shot 8 of 27 and turned the ball over seven times.

Still, some doubt may be creeping in. Chicago had its chances, and knew it, but was unable to take advantage of a largely off night by Wade. Rose was guarded in the game's biggest minutes by James, and the MVP from 2009 and 2010 had the upper hand against this season's MVP.

"It's extremely hard," Rose acknowledged, "when a 6-8 guy can easily defend you."

The Heat were down by 11 early, led for only 4 1/2 minutes in the third and fourth quarters, and had Wade stuck on eight points from late in the second until past the midpoint of overtime.

Somehow, it wasn't a problem.

A sleep-deprived Mike Miller - whose wife delivered a baby last week - scored 12 points and made plenty of key defensive plays to help Miami outscore Chicago by a whopping 36 points with him on the floor. Udonis Haslem missed all five of his shots, and he was still a plus-25 in his 33 minutes off the bench.

And the stars, well, were stars.

"We know offensively, at times, we have rough stretches," James said. "But we give ourselves chances to win every game because we defend."

James was 11 for 26 from the field and 13 of 13 - his best playoff showing ever - from the foul line. Bosh was aggressive again, making 10 of his 11 free throws. Miami made its last 24 straight from the stripe, and the defense was again the biggest key of all.

Wade soared to block a layup by Rose with 24 seconds left, Miami controlled the rebound after James dove on the floor for the ball, and Heat President Pat Riley clapped in celebration.

"Defense is the reason that we're here," Bosh said. "Defense is the reason that we win every game. And defense is the reason why we have a chance of winning Game 5."

From the Miami perspective, this game will be remembered for how the Heat rallied around Wade - then watched him save his best for last.

"We reminded him in one of the final huddles, this is his time," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said.

The 2006 NBA finals MVP was in the arena late Monday night, trying to work on some things in one of his customary playoff-after-dark sessions.

Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. This seemed like it would be the latter.

Whatever answer he sought, he didn't find for much of Game 4. Wade made just 5 of 16 shots from the field, lacking his usual lift at the rim. He made a pair of free throws with 1:50 left in the first half for his seventh and eighth points, and didn't score again until overtime.

Better late than never.

"You could tell that neither team wanted to lose," Wade said. "Both teams were clawing. If you're a fan of the game, this was a great basketball game. ... This was will."

Chicago turned the ball over on consecutive possessions late in overtime, Wade turned the second of those into a layup with 1:01 left for a 95-89 lead, and the Heat soon knew they were one win away from the title round.

"Hey, they're a great team," Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. "They compete. They play hard. They play great defense ... and they made plays at the end."

The fourth quarter was pure theater, both teams clearly knowing - clearly relishing - the stakes.

Miami scored the first seven points for a 70-69 lead. Chicago took the lead back on a pair of free throws by Rose with 6:34 left, and Miami answered with a four-point possession - two free throws by Bosh after a flagrant foul against Boozer, followed by Miller making a jumper over Rose for a 78-77 edge.

Back and forth from there, with the lead, the momentum, control of the series, all seeming to turn every time the ball crossed midcourt.

"We thought we had chances to win and unfortunately we came up short," Boozer said. "All we can do now is focus on the next one at home and do what we can to win that game and then move forward from there."

Rose had a chance with 28 seconds left in regulation, his jumper from the left side hitting the rim and eventually being corralled by Miller. The Heat called time with 23 seconds left, 18 seconds on the shot clock, everyone in the building probably thinking the play would be set up for James.

It was. And it never got a chance for liftoff.

Referee Bennett Salvatore called James for an offensive foul with 8 seconds left, saying Ronnie Brewer beat him to the spot as the two-time MVP tried to back down the right side of the lane. So instead of winning the game late in regulation, James had to send it to overtime with defense. He guarded Rose on the final possession, forcing the Chicago guard into a jumper that fell way short - and off to an extra 5 minutes they went.

"All I can do now is put it behind me and go forward," Rose said.

A day after being fined $50,000 for directing an anti-gay slur at a fan during Game 3, Bulls center Joakim Noah had six points and 14 rebounds in 45 minutes. And there seemed to be very little, if any, unusual rancor from Miami fans toward Noah.

Chicago's lead was 46-44 at halftime, after some wild emotional swings - a 19-4 run by the Bulls, followed by a 29-9 spurt for the Heat, then capped by an 18-7 rebuttal by the Bulls to close the second quarter.

The Heat never led in the third quarter, but Chicago never pulled away.

The Bulls were up by eight and had possession with 3 minutes left, before Miami scored eight of the game's next 10 points to make a precarious deficit a bit more manageable and set up the unbelievable final quarter.

"Look, this series is an absolute bloodbath," Spoelstra said. "It's about as competitive and physical as it can be."

Notes: Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski sat with Heat owner Micky Arison near midcourt. ... The teams combined for 21 turnovers in Game 3. They had 22 by the midpoint of the third quarter on Tuesday night. ... Bulls reserve C Omer Asik, who tweaked an ankle in Game 3, logged 2 minutes on Tuesday, limping noticeably.

THE FACTS: The Miami Heat defeated the Chicago Bulls 101-93 in overtime in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals Tuesday at AmericanAirlines Arena. The Heat now lead the series 3-1. Forward LeBron James led Miami with 35 points while Chris Bosh added 22. The Heat turned in yet another solid defensive performance, holding the Bulls to 40 percent shooting. Chicago guard Derrick Rose, the reigning MVP, finished with 23 points on 8-for-27 shooting.

The Heat trailed by five entering the fourth quarter, rallied behind James and reserve Mike Miller, who scored 12 points. The Bulls had a chance to win in regulation, but Rose missed a shot at the buzzer. From there, the Heat dominated the extra session.

QUOTABLE: "Look, this series is an absolute bloodbath. That game tonight was a total grind. It is very challenging for either team to get into any offensive flow, unless it's in the open court. It's about as competitive and physical as it can be."

THE STAT: The Heat made their final 24 free throws of the game. They finished 32-for-38 from the foul line.

TURNING POINT: Trailing by five entering the fourth, the Heat turned the game over to James. He scored 13 points in the final quarter. James continues to show he can be a strong finisher, silencing the critics who say he isn't a "closer."

QUOTABLE II: "Tonight, definitely it was on me. I had two opportunities to end the game. Couldn't do it. If anything, learn from it. Too many turnovers. Really was my fault but I'm going to learn from it."

HOT: Mike Miller had his first impactful game of the postseason. He finished with 12 points off the bench, going 2-for-5 from 3-point range. The season has been a struggle for Miller, who has been saddled with injuries on both thumbs. For one night, he was able to forget his troubles.

NOT: Once again, Rose finished with less than spectacular numbers. He shot just 8-for-27 from the field. The Heat have limited his penetration and Rose has struggled to find his jumpshot. If he doesn't improve his field-goal percentage, his MVP award will only be a consolation prize.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: James did it all once again. He scored 35 points and had six rebounds, six assists and three blocks. He was 13-for-13 from the foul line.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Singer Gloria Estefan, tennis player Serena Williams, rappers Drake and Lil Wayne.

GOOD MOVE: Give Spoelstra credit for playing Mike Miller instead of James Jones. It was the difference in the game because Miller came up big with his shooting, but also defense and rebounding. While Jones is an effective scorer, he at times can be one-dimensional. Miller brings versatility.

BAD MOVE: Too much poor execution for the Bulls in the later stages, starting with the final shot at the end of regulation. Rose probably should have attacked the basket, trying to draw contact. Instead he took a long jumper over the outstretched arms of James. From there, the Bulls committed too many turnovers in overtime.

NOTABLE: The Bulls lost three consecutive games for the first time this season ... Chicago center Omer Asik played two minutes before leaving the game after reinjuring his ankle ... Heat guard Dwyane Wade went scoreless the second half before scoring six points in overtime ...
