DEERFIELD, Ill. (AP) There wasn't much else LeBron James could do other than shrug it all off and vow to perform better in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals.

Game 1 certainly didn't go well for the Miami.

With James and Dwyane Wade struggling, and the Heat getting beaten badly on the boards, Chris Bosh's 30 points weren't enough to bail out the Heat in the opener. The top-seeded Chicago Bulls won 103-82, and now have a chance to grab a commanding lead when the series resumes Wednesday night at the United Center.

"We've been able to bounce back this year no matter if it's been the regular season or the postseason," James said. "Learn from mistakes in the previous game and then move on. We've done that. We're looking forward to the challenge, we're excited about tomorrow's opportunity to be here and try to steal homecourt."

If they don't get more from James and Wade, the Heat won't get that chance and a 2-0 deficit more daunting then it sounds. The Bulls never lost more than two in a row on their way to a league-leading 62 wins and their first conference finals appearance since the second championship three-peat 13 years ago. They swept three close games from the Heat during the regular season and are off to a good start in this series.

James and Wade came in on a surge, only to have the plug pulled against one of the league's stingiest defenses.

Coming off back-to-back games with 35 and 33 points against Boston in the semifinals, James scored just 15 in the opener while hitting 5 of 15 shots. He couldn't shake Luol Deng or active big men like Taj Gibson and Joakim Noah helping out.

Wade didn't have much luck, either, after averaging 30.2 points against the Celtics. He finished with 18 points - six in the second half - and the Bulls broke it open down the stretch on their way to a lopsided victory.

"I think we've got to play better," said Deng, who scored 21 points. "I really do. We played really well. If you look at the final score, we won by a lot, but it really wasn't that kind of game. It really wasn't. It was tied at the half. They had the lead at some point in the third quarter. So there's a lot of things we've got to get better at."

He saw too many fastbreaks in the early going, some sloppy ball handling. League MVP Derrick Rose committed three of his four turnovers in the opening minutes but had none in the second half, and in many ways, it was a textbook performance by a team that held opponents to a league-low 43-percent shooting.

Sure, Miami hit just over 47 percent of its shots, but other than Bosh (12 of 18), no one else really stepped up and Miami often looked out of sync.

There was too much isolation, not enough ball movement, patience. Then again, Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau pointed out Miami's ball movement often comes out of isolation.

"Miami's been a good ball-movement team all year," he said. "They have players that when the ball comes back to them, they can go one-on-one. That's what makes them so dangerous and tough to guard. Sometimes, your best ball movement comes off isolation because you have to commit two defenders to the player, and once the ball moves, now you're getting wide open shots or easier shots."

James said: "You got be patient. It's harder to attack on the front side of their defense because they load on the strong side. You've got to be able to get the ball from one side to another and then attack their defense. They got a lot of length and athleticism."

And they don't allow many second chances.

No team outrebounded opponents by a wider margin than the Bulls at 5.74 per game. They owned the Heat on the boards during the regular season and did it again in Game 1, to a 45-33 tune. They grabbed 19 offensive rebounds to just six for the Heat and outscored them 31-8 on second-chance points.

Miami could go with a bigger rotation and activate Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Erick Dampier, but they would be sacrificing athleticism.

"It's not about bigger bodies, it's about wanting the ball," Bosh said. "Collectively, as a team, we have to do good job of keeping bodies on those bigs. Containing the screen and roll with D-Rose and just going our job like we know we are capable of. We've done it all season, we just have to capitalize tomorrow."

NOTE: It's no surprise that Gibson got, oh, a few messages after his eyebrow-raising dunk on Wade in Game 1, one of two slams that had people buzzing about the young forward afterward. How many? "Too many," Gibson said. "I turned my phone off. I just wanted to move on."

James owns crunch time as Heat top Bulls in Game 2

CHICAGO (AP) Right from the start, LeBron James made it clear he was going to attack and no one was going to stop him.

Point taken.

James came up big down the stretch with nine of his 29 points in the final 4:27, Dwyane Wade added 24 and the Miami Heat beat the Chicago Bulls 85-75 Wednesday night to tie the Eastern Conference finals at one game apiece.

"It was a big game," James said. "We felt like it was a must win for us going back home."

The Heat can breathe a little easier after escaping with a win and stealing home-court advantage. Coming off a lopsided loss in Game 1, they recovered in crunch time - thanks in large part to James - after blowing an 11-point lead.

Game 3 is Sunday in Miami.

James shook off a brutal opener and took over late in the fourth, starting with a 3-pointer that put Miami ahead for good at 76-73. He also had 10 rebounds despite a head cold, and Miami outrebounded the Bulls 45-41 after getting pounded 45-33 on the glass in the opener.

"That fourth quarter is going to epitomize this entire series," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "It's an absolute street fight for both teams."

It was a big turnaround for James after he managed only 15 points on 5-for-15 shooting while being harassed by Luol Deng in Game 1. Wade, coming off an 18-point performance in the opener, also had nine rebounds for Miami.

Miami reserve Udonis Haslem, whom Spoelstra called "an absolute championship warrior," provided a spark with 13 points, and the Heat beat the Bulls for the first time this season even though Chris Bosh scored just 10 points after pouring in 30 in the opener.

"We got that one that we needed," Wade said. "Now, we go home and we've got to take care of business. This team right here is like us. They can win at home and on the road."

Derrick Rose led Chicago with 21 points, only two of those coming in the fourth quarter. Deng, the only other Bulls player in double figures, added 13 but had just four after the opening period.

Joakim Noah had nine points and eight rebounds, and Taj Gibson provided a spark in the fourth with all of his eight points. Carlos Boozer, however, was a non-factor with seven points and eight rebounds and sat out the final 16:21.

"We let one go, but it's a tied series," Deng said. "It's not the end of the world. These things will happen. We need to bounce back."

The Bulls missed countless layups and got outshot 47.1 percent to 34.1 percent. They were 3 of 20 from 3-point range and 16 of 26 at the foul line.

They had no answer for James down the stretch, either, and came up short when it looked as if they might find a way to pull this one out.

"We played a low-energy offense, a low-energy defense and the result was not good," coach Tom Thibodeau said.

Rose put it this way: "We can't afford to go out and play like this. We let them get easy baskets, especially in transition."

The Heat led by 11 late in the third before the Bulls pulled even in the fourth, but James put Miami ahead for good when he hit a 3 with 4:28 left to break a 73-all tie. He added a jumper to make it a five-point game with 3:15 remaining.

Gibson delivered a slam over three defenders and got fouled by Wade, the same guy he delivered a poster-worthy dunk on in Game 1, to make it a three-point game with 2:29 left, but missed the free throw.

James put back his own miss and nailed a 20-footer to make it 84-75 with 47 seconds left.

The Heat looked as if they were ready to pull away in the third, going on a 10-0 run after Rose hit two free throws to cut it to 57-56 with 5:14 left.

Haslem blocked Rose and dunked on Keith Bogans for a three-point play to start the run and ended it with a vicious fastbreak dunk.

"I talked to him two days ago, and there was a look in his eye," Spoelstra said, referring to Haslem, who missed most of the regular season with a foot injury. "I've been through a lot of battles with that warrior, and I knew it was time to put him in."

Haslem continued to reiterate he was ready but understood he needed to be patient. When the opportunity came, he wasn't looking to score.

"I was seeing guys running to the basket without anyone putting a body on them," he said. "My focus wasn't on scoring tonight, it was defense and rebounding."

Notes: Sporting various piercings and tattoos, incoming Hall-of-Famer Dennis Rodman presented the game ball to a loud ovation before the opening tip. ... The Heat stuck with their Game 1 lineup and held out Erick Dampier, Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Dexter Pittman again. ... The Bears' Julius Peppers got a loud ovation and waved to the crowd when he was shown during a first-quarter timeout. ... The Bulls missed their first nine field goals before Bogans nailed a 3 and scored on a fast-break layup. ... Deng sent the crowd into a frenzy when he swished a 41-foot heave at the end of the first quarter.

Bulls-Heat notebook

THE FACTS: LeBron James scored 29 points and Dwyane Wade had 24 to lead the Miami Heat to an 85-75 victory Wednesday over the Chicago Bulls at the United Center, tying the Eastern Conference finals at 1-1. The Bulls shot horribly from the field (34.1 percent) and from the line (61.5 percent). Derrick Rose scored 21 points but made only seven of 23 shots.

THE FACTS II: The Heat got a huge bench effort from Udonis Haslem, who had 13 points and five rebounds. The Bulls, meanwhile, had only one player other than Rose in double figures, and Luol Deng only had two of his 13 points in the second half. The Bulls bench, which contributed 33 points in Game 1, had only 20 points in Game 2.

QUOTABLE: "I don't know if the basketball aficionado likes a 14-10 score in the fourth quarter, but that's probably what it is going to come down to."

THE STAT: The Heat took 14 less shots and two less free throws than the Bulls in the game. The Bulls had eight offensive rebounds in the game's first 5 1/2 minutes but scored only five points off those second chances.

THE STAT II: Carlos Boozer, who had 14 points and nine rebounds in Game 1, contributed just seven points with eight rebounds in Game 2.

TURNING POINT: The game was tied at 73 with 7:16 left when James took over, scoring nine of the Heat's last 12 points. The other points came from Wade at the free-throw line. The Bulls went 1-for-11 from the field down the stretch.

INJURY UPDATE: The game was stopped for several minutes with 4:36 remaining when both Wade of the Heat and Omer Asik of the Bulls had severe cuts. Wade was bleeding from the elbow and Asik was bleeding from the neck.

HOT: Haslem was the best shooter in the game, making five of 10 attempts and all three of his free throws.

NOT: Rose was completely miserable from the field, going 7-for-23. He was short on many of his longer shots and could not convert on his drives to the basket.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Former Bulls forward Dennis Rodman was at the United Center to present the game ball. Before the game, he spoke to reporters about the current Bulls. "I love their team; I love Joakim Noah,'' Rodman said. "He runs around with his head cut off sometimes, but I love it. He's more like me but taller. Tom (Thibodeau, Bulls coach) has put a great team together because he's very defensive-oriented and he's got these players believing you have to play defense first."

GOOD MOVE: Spoelstra gave Haslem 23 minutes of playing time and Mike Miller 18 minutes. They combined for 15 points and 12 rebounds.
