MIAMI (AP) Their charter flight home from Boston landed around 3 a.m. Tuesday, and the Miami Heat were back at work less than 12 hours later.

Typically, such a late arrival would merit a day off.

Not now - not when on the cusp of knocking off the team that has pained Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and the Heat for so long.

Up 3-1 in their best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal series, the Heat will go for the clincher at home against the Celtics on Wednesday night. Miami grabbed control with a 98-90 overtime win in Boston on Monday night, and now stands one victory away from reaching the East finals for the first time since the 2006 championship run.

"This is not a team that you let your guard down against," Wade said.

"No way," instantly chimed in James, nodding as he stood on Wade's left.

It was not a long workout for the Heat on Tuesday, mostly film work and some light shooting. The Celtics took the day off, opting instead to gather around midday for their flight to South Florida, though it was certain that ailing players like Rajon Rondo - who remains hampered mightily by the aftereffects of dislocating his elbow in Game 3 - would be getting some treatment.

"I'll be fine," Rondo said. "I'm playing."

Celtics coach Doc Rivers was not available for comment Tuesday. The team had to cancel a planned early evening teleconference because of technical problems.

The Heat do not plan any changes to the starting lineup, coach Erik Spoelstra said, meaning Joel Anthony will remain at center to open the game and Zydrunas Ilgauskas will come off the bench, as will point guard Mario Chalmers behind first-stringer Mike Bibby.

Minutes after Game 4 ended, Spoelstra began telling his team that ending Boston's season would be its toughest challenge yet. He did not back down from that on Tuesday.

"We can expect their best," Spoelstra said. "We know we're getting their best effort and I'm sure they'll play well. We'll have to play better."

Wade and James, who combined for 63 points in Game 4, concurred. They became teammates, in part, to beat Boston after the Celtics thwarted James's plan to bring a title to Cleveland and dominated the Heat since 2007, including a five-game ousting of Miami in the opening round of last season's playoffs.

"This is like an Eastern Conference finals type-of-buildup series," Wade said. "And it's been played out that way."

Maligned much of the season for their collective struggles late in close games, the Heat got contributions across the board to pull it out in Game 4. James made a 3-pointer - "A backbreaker," Celtics guard Ray Allen said later - inches away from the Boston bench to tie it at 84 with 2 minutes left in regulation. Wade's long jumper with 2:01 left in overtime was for a 92-86 lead and rendered Boston's crowd silent. And Chris Bosh sealed the win with 24 seconds left, tipping in James' miss to put Miami up by five.

"We executed well down the stretch defensively and offensively," said Heat forward James Jones, who made another key play by fouling Allen and taking away a potential Boston fast break with the game tied at 86 with 19 seconds left in regulation. "I think it was just our presence of mind, our determination. We had mistakes. We made some mistakes."

So did Boston.

The Celtics' miscues were far more noticeable down the stretch.

Rondo missed a layup with 1:11 left in regulation, misfiring on an easy chance to give Boston what would have been a two-point lead. Paul Pierce had to take a wild shot at the fourth-quarter buzzer after Allen and Kevin Garnett collided on a play that could have won the game for the Celtics and instead left them all shaking their heads.

In overtime, Boston had as many turnovers - four - as points.

"When our back is against the wall, that's when we show great resilience," Garnett said. "We'll see what we're made of."

If the Celtics lose, some sweeping changes may be on the way.

The core of the team likely will remain the same for at least one more season. But Rivers - whose contract is expiring at season's end - has often said the lure of spending more time with family is difficult to ignore.

And a loss may spell the end of the Shaquille O'Neal era.

He eclipsed the 50,000-minute mark for his career last month and time has clearly taken its toll on his body, so there will surely be widespread speculation that whenever Boston's season ends, the final buzzer for O'Neal's career may beckon as well.

But in the Boston locker room late Monday, all that mattered was winning Game 5 and extending the series.

"We've got to get one win right now," Pierce said. "That's the focus. ... It's all on the line."

East finals bound: Miami ousts Boston, 97-87

MIAMI (AP) For LeBron James, Game 5 last season against Boston was horrific.

A year later, Game 5 was humbling.

And he and the Miami Heat are halfway to an NBA championship, having finally found a way to vanquish the Celtics.

Dwyane Wade scored 34 points, James added 33 - including the game's last 10 in a spectacular closing flourish, part of Miami's 16-0 run over the final 4:15 - and the Heat beat the Celtics 97-87 on Wednesday night to win their Eastern Conference semifinal series in five games.

When it was over, James knelt on the court, oblivious to the photographers who quickly surrounded him in Miami's celebration.

"Everything went through my mind at that point," James said. "Finally getting over this hump against this team. Everything I went through this summer, with 'The Decision' and deciding to come down here to be a part of this team ... because I knew how important team is to this sport ... and all the backlash I got from it.

"I'd be up here for two hours if I tell you exactly everything that went through my head. Very emotional at that point, you know, and happy we got through it as a team."

That they did - as a team.

James Jones hit a 3-pointer that kickstarted the final push, and Chris Bosh finished with 14 points - none of them more important than the two coming when he blew past Kevin Garnett for a game-tying dunk with 2:57 left.

Wade carried Miami early, then James finished the job. His personal 10-0 run to close the game put some long-simmering Celtics demons to rest.

"I play with the two best players in the league," Bosh said. "And we do this together."

True, this was about the collective.

And in the end, for James, it was also personal. The Boston series a year ago was painful for him, as was the summer - and the fallout - that followed after he left Cleveland.

"I apologize for the way it happened," James said. "But I knew that this opportunity was once in a lifetime."

Ray Allen led Boston with 18 points. Garnett had 15 points and 11 rebounds, Paul Pierce scored 12 and Delonte West added 10.

"Right now, I am really upset," Pierce said. "I wish I could have played better tonight. Unfortunately we came up on the short end of the stick. I tip my hat off to Miami. They really played great basketball."

Rajon Rondo finished with six points in 31 minutes for Boston, playing with what appeared to be a slimmer brace over the still-painful left elbow that he dislocated during Game 3.

"I know we gave a lot in Game 3," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "And I don't know if we could ever get that effort back."

The Celtics got one measure of a victory Wednesday night: Ending months of speculation, Rivers said he will likely return to coach next season.

"I'm a Celtic," Rivers said. "And I love our guys. I want to win again here. I'm competitive as hell, I have a competitive group. So we'll see. That's where I'm at today. Tomorrow I may change my mind."

Exactly one year earlier, James was maligned in Cleveland when the Cavaliers were embarrassed by the Celtics, 120-88 in Game 5 of that East semifinal series. Boston won in six games, the finale of that matchup being James' last game with the franchise that drafted him No. 1 overall in 2003.

He wound up in Miami, alongside Wade and Bosh, aiming to chase a title.

Eight wins down, eight wins to go.

Next up for the Heat is the East finals against either Chicago or Atlanta, a series that may begin as early as Sunday. Chicago leads 3-2 with Game 6 on Thursday.

"When you're playing this game, and you have another guy over there doing the things and as capable as LeBron, not only am I a fan on the court, but it makes the game easier," Wade said. "Obviously."

Obviously.

James put Miami up for good with a 3-pointer with 2:10 remaining, then added a game-sealing - more aptly, a series-sealing - 3 with 40.4 seconds left, then turned and posed for some fans who screamed in delight.

"They make you fight for everything," James said. "You can never take the foot off the gas. You can never take a second off against that team."

So he kept playing, all the way to the final second.

A steal and two-handed slam 6 seconds later for good measure, followed by a Celtics turnover, got the party started. It was over, the Heat and Celtics knew it, and Rivers stood silently near the bench, his arms folded across his chest as James ran down the clock on Miami's final offensive possession of the series.

Of course, he scored.

Boston was done, thoroughly worn down by a younger, more athletic opponent. The Celtics won the first three meetings between the clubs this season, then lost five of the final six.

"It was a series that all of us wanted, really since training camp," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said.

Wade was knocked over into some courtside seats trying to snare the final rebound, but that only prolonged the moment. James knelt in prayer for several seconds, then ran over to wrap Wade in a long embrace as the fans screamed loudly.

"D-Wade, he made it real difficult," Celtics forward Glen Davis said. "He came through. He carried the team. He willed them to win. He carried them just long enough for LeBron to knock us out."

The Heat said often in this series, Boston laid the plan for what Miami needed to ultimately do to become champions.

James said it again when it was over Wednesday night.

"It's a great team," James said of Boston in the on-court celebration. "Like I said, I got the utmost respect for that team. They're the reason why all three of us came together, is because of what they did, that blueprint they had in '08 when they all came together. So it's a great team win and get ready for our next opponent."

It's Miami's fourth trip to the East finals, its first since 2006.

Wade had 30 points through three quarters. James added 20, while the rest of the Heat managed only 21 and they were down 73-71.

And when everyone went cold to open the fourth, Boston seized a bit of control. West scored six of the Celtics' first eight points in the final quarter, the last of those coming on a drive with 9:21 left for an 81-74 lead.

NOTES: Celebrities at the game included financial guru Suze Orman (in a jacket, as always) and 18-time golf major champion Jack Nicklaus (in no jacket, Masters green or otherwise). ... The game's first six sets of two-shot trips to the foul line resulted in everyone going 1 for 2 - Wade and Garnett did it twice, with James and Joel Anthony doing it once. ... Wade had a spectacular play with 1:22 left in the opening quarter, when he fought off Jeff Green to rebound a missed 3-pointer by Mario Chalmers, then - while falling, in one motion - tossed it off the rim and in, beginning a three-point play.

Celtics-Heat notebook

THE FACTS: The Miami Heat defeated the Boston Celtics 97-87 Wednesday in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. The Heat won the series 4-1, and will play either Chicago or Atlanta in the conference finals.

Guard Dwyane Wade led all scorers with 34 points, but it was the fourth-quarter play of LeBron James that propelled the Heat into the next round. James, who scored 33 points, had three baskets in the closing moments to help Miami close out the series. The Heat trailed 87-81 late in the fourth quarter, but finished with a 16-0 run.

The Celtics were led by Ray Allen's 18 points and Kevin Garnett, who scored 15. But they were undermanned in the final moments because of injuries to Rajon Rondo and Jermaine O'Neal, who were both were sidelined with back problems. Rondo was also battling a sore elbow he dislocated in Game 3.

QUOTABLE: "It took a 5 1/2-month season for us to get to this point ... to exorcise these demons. It was a series all of us wanted since training camp."

THE STAT: The Heat's Big 3 of James, Chris Bosh and Wade combined for 81 of the 97 points. They combined for 23 of the 26 fourth-quarter points. The stat was more damaging, considering Boston's trio of Garnett, Paul Pierce and Allen totaled just 45 points.

TURNING POINT: Trailing 87-81, the Heat regouped at the right time. They scored the game's final 16 points. James led the way by scoring eight points, including two 3-pointers, during the stretch. After Bosh tied the score on a dunk, James hit the last of his 3-pointers to put the Heat ahead for good.

QUOTABLE II: "Those two guys are monsters. When they're making shots, it makes it very difficult."

HOT: Wade and James. It's hard to single out their performances. Wade carried the load for three quarters, leaving James to close it out. They combined to shoot 24 of 39 and score 67 points.

NOT: Rondo spent most of the game battling the pain from dislocated elbow. He was effective in the first quarter, but lost a step after colliding with Heat forward James Jones in the second quarter. He was in so much pain, he was kept on the bench most of the quarter, finishing with six points on 3 of 5 shooting.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Wade shot 13 of 19 from the field. His stats would have been better had he not missed seven free throws. Wade also grabbed 10 rebounds and had five assists.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Singer Gloria Estefan, golfer Jack Nicklaus, former Heat player Rony Seikaly.

GOOD MOVE: After Wade was so dominant for three quarters, the Heat turned the ball over to James. He has received much criticism for struggling in late-game moments, but showed he was able to be a "closer." Without his play down the stretch, the Heat may have been preparing for Game 6 instead of the next round.

BAD MOVE: Was playing Rondo a good move by Rivers? It's debatable because Rondo appeared to hurt the team more than help it. He was a liability on offense and defense. With Delonte West (10 points) playing so well, it may have been better to sit Rondo.

NOTABLE: The Heat are in the Eastern Conference finals for the fourth time in the franchise's 23-year history. ... If Chicago defeats the Atlanta Hawks Thursday, the next series would begin Sunday night in Chicago. Otherwise, it begins Wednesday in Chicago or Miami, depending who wins. ... Heat forward Juwan Howard scored five points in his first significant action of the postseason. He played 19 minutes. It is Howard's first time advancing past the second round in his 17-year career.
