Bulls-Hawks Preview

ATLANTA (AP) Derrick Rose walked slowly out of the arena Saturday, large packs of ice wrapped around both knees.

After perhaps the best game of an already dynamic career, the Bulls star had no big plans for an off day in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Grab some dinner. Hang out with teammates. Watch the championship bout between Manny Pacquiao and Shane Mosley.

His pick?

"Pacquiao," Rose said quickly. "I think everybody's got Pacquiao."

Speaking of guys on top of their game, Rose turned what had been a close series clearly in Chicago's favor with his one-man beatdown of the Atlanta Hawks in Game 3. Rose knocked down jumpers. He was a blur darting into the lane. He was simply unstoppable, going for a career-high 44 points in the 99-82 victory Friday night.

The top-seeded Bulls, who shockingly lost at home in the series opener, are back in control with a 2-1 lead. And the Hawks better come up with a way to slow down the league's youngest MVP just a bit, or their season isn't going to last much longer.

"He started making outside shots," said Atlanta guard Jeff Teague, who spent much of the night trying to guard Rose and still looked a bit shell-shocked the next day. "When he's making outside shots like that, it's tough to cover him."

After watching the game tape, Hawks coach Larry Drew said he's not concerned about Rose scoring so many points. After all, he's put up 27 shots in each of the first three games, so he's going to have big numbers just by sheer volume. But Drew said his team made it way too easy for Rose to slash into the lane, starting with Chicago's second possession of the game.

"He went coast to coast against four guys for an uncontested layup," Drew said. "He's a phenomenal player. I'll give credit where credit is due. But still, we have to be better at defending him and not just letting him get into the paint and score so easily."

That, of course, is easy to draw up on a chalkboard. Try guarding Rose at game speed, when he's dashing around the court so fast that everyone else appears to be in slow motion. He burned the Hawks for five layups, a dunk and a pair of running jumpers from in close.

"He's probably the fastest guy in the league getting from end to end," Teague said. "You've got to get three guys back to stop him in transition."

When Rose is hitting outside jumpers like he was in Game 3, though, the other team is almost helpless. Of his 16 baskets, four came from beyond the arc. Three others were in the 18- to 21-foot range. When Teague got in Rose's face, the Chicago star dribbled right past him. When Teague backed off, Rose took the open jumper - and usually made it.

Look for the Hawks to come at Rose with some defensive alignments he hasn't seen in this series. Perhaps some full-court pressure. Surely more trapping and double teams. Whether that makes much difference remains to be seen, but they clearly can't stick with the same plan.

"We've got to try to figure out a new defense," Teague said. "I don't think we changed anything up during the course of the game. I'm sure next game, we'll add different coverages and different schemes if he gets on a roll like that. ... We have to. You can't guard him the same way three games straight. He's the MVP. He's going to start picking you apart."

Drew said his team has to get much more physical against Rose in Game 4 Sunday night. A bump here, a shove there. Knock him around a bit and hope it gets him out of his rhythm.

Then again, the Hawks need to do that against everyone. They've been manhandled on the boards the last two games, outrebounded 105-73. The Bulls are working harder and seemingly getting every loose ball.

The most distressing stat for Drew: His starters were called for only one foul - total - in the first half.

"You're not going to win many games if you don't play physical and get some fouls," he said. "I'm not saying hurt people. But you've got to get physical fouls. It's the playoffs."

That's not an issue for the Bulls. After getting burned by Joe Johnson and Jamal Crawford in Game 1 (they combined for 56 points on 20-of-34 shooting), Chicago has doubled those two almost every time they touch the ball. The result: Johnson is 11 of 27 for 26 points over the last two contests, Crawford 5 of 17 for 18 points.

Johnson was clearly frustrated after Game 3. He got few good looks at the basket, which he blamed on the offensive plays the Hawks were running, and he's not too thrilled about Drew encouraging him to look for the open man when he's doubled.

"They want me to give it up, but we can't win like that," said Johnson, who averaged a team-high 18.2 points during the regular season. "We've got to start doing what got us here."

Drew shot right back Saturday, saying it's up to Johnson to cope with the extra attention.

"A lot of key players get double teams. They play out of double teams," Drew said. "A lot of playing out of double teams is not necessarily trying to beat the double team, but making plays. You have to show a willingness to give the ball up and trust your teammates. If you continue to try to beat the double team by yourself, you're playing into the opposition's hands."

Rose has sure embraced the starring role.

But it's his work behind the scenes that impresses his coach.

"Derrick is always trying to do better," Tom Thibodeau said. "He's an extremely confident guy, and he gets a lot of that from his preparation. He stays late, studies hard, and it always shows up in how he plays the game."

Smith, Teague lead Hawks past Bulls 100-88

ATLANTA (AP) Josh Smith seemed to do it all. He attacked the basket. He defended. He rebounded. He made brilliant passes. He even won a crucial jump ball against a taller player.

There was only one thing Smith didn't do - park himself on the outside, putting up shots beyond his range.

The Atlanta Hawks were just fine with that.

Smith answered his critics with a huge game - 23 points, 16 rebounds and eight assists - and fill-in Jeff Teague came up with the Derrick Rose-like plays down the stretch to lead the Hawks past the Chicago Bulls 100-88 Sunday night, evening the Eastern Conference semifinals at two games apiece.

The Hawks snapped a nine-game home losing streak in the second round, their misery dating to a May 13, 1996, win against Orlando.

Smith is frequently criticized by Atlanta fans for his inconsistent play. He heard nothing but cheers in this one, largely staying away from the jumpers, dominating on the inside and finding the open man.

"We're always trying to stay in his ear, but obviously when he's going to the basket and making it easy for himself, we just try to keep encouraging him," teammate Joe Johnson said. "He was All-Star caliber. When he's playing like that, it's almost impossible for a team to beat us."

Smith said he's not worried about those who boo him in his own hometown, who feel he's never quite lived up to his enormous potential even though he's still just 25 years old.

"There are people who don't understand the game, who don't know the game. That doesn't faze me," he said. "My teammates matter more than anybody else. They believe in me. They have confidence in my game. When I was in my rut, they told me to stay positive, to stay in the game, just do what I'd been doing all season long. I stayed with it and had the game I had tonight."

Teague has been a huge surprise filling in for injured Kirk Hinrich, directing the team with the poise of a veteran instead of someone who played infrequently during the regular season and first round of the playoffs. He scored 12 points and doled out four assists, putting the capper on a late 10-0 run that broke open a game that had been tight and intense all the way.

"He's playing great," said Hinrich, who's watched this entire series in dress suits because of a hamstring injury. "Obviously he has ability. He's fast. He's good at finishing up around the rim."

Driving toward the hoop with Kyle Korver draped all over him, Teague flipped up a shot as he was falling down. It banked in, giving the Hawks a safe lead, 94-84, with 1:26 remaining. The second-year player bounced off the court with a big smile, bumping his teammates on the way to the bench.

Someone held up a sign, "M-V-Teague."

The actual MVP scored 34 points. But Rose needed 32 shots to do it, and he wasn't nearly as effective as he was in scoring a career-best 44 points in Game 3, leading the Bulls to a 99-82 rout that restored Chicago's home-court advantage. The top-seeded Bulls can still close out the series simply by winning at home, but the Hawks know they'll get at least one more home game.

"Game 6 tickets are on sale now," the Hawks public-address announcer said.

Leading 90-84, the Hawks caught a break when referee Bennett Salvatore blew an inadvertent whistle as Rose was shooting. He thought it was a foul. Salvatore ruled a jump. The 6-foot-9 Smith leaped high to tip it away from 6-11 Joakim Noah, giving the Hawks possession.

"I blew my whistle and didn't mean to," Salvatore said. "I didn't think it was a foul. Having watched the replay after the game, it was a foul and I should have called it. I made a mistake."

After an embarrassing performance two nights earlier, the Hawks changed up their lineup. They had been dominated on the boards in the two previous games, so they went back to a bigger lineup that worked so well against Dwight Howard and Orlando in the opening round.

Seven-footer Jason Collins started at center between Al Horford and Smith, putting Marvin Williams in a reserve role. Collins had a couple of early dunks, but he wound up playing less than 12 minutes.

More significant was the way Atlanta changed up its defense on Rose, charging at him with double-teams - even a few triple-teams - whenever it looked as though he was about to make a move toward the hoop.

No one stops Rose completely, of course. He still had plenty of moves for the highlight film, including a soaring dunk of his own miss when no one blocked him out early on.

But down the stretch, the Hawks clamped down on the Chicago star. Rose tied it at 84 on a drive with 4 1/2 minutes to go, but he missed his next shot, then turned it over twice before making a late basket that didn't matter. He finished 12 of 32 from the field.

"It was a tough game but no excuses," Rose said. "Put this game on me. Two turnovers at the end of the game."

Watching from the bench, Hinrich noticed a big difference from Game 3 to Game 4.

"Our second line of defense was so much better," he said. "When Derrick got in the lane, we made him play in a crowd. That's what you have to do."

Smith showed what he can do when he's not sitting on the outside, launching up errant jumpers. In the decisive run, he played stifling defense on Rose, had a big rebound and dished out two nifty passes that set up dunks by Horford.

Horford had his best game of the series, scoring 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting. Joe Johnson led the Hawks with 24 points, knocking down some early shots to get over a rough showing in Game 3.

Carlos Boozer had 18 points for Chicago, and Luol Deng added 13. Korver had an especially rough night, going 1 for 8 from the field. He missed all five of his 3-point attempts.

The game was in single digits until the end. The Hawks ran to what was their biggest lead, 60-52, when Smith got out on a fast break and passed to Horford slicing in off the wing for a layup.

Chicago responded with a 17-7 spurt to close the third quarter. Boozer capped it with a nice spin move, laying it in with his left hand to send the Bulls to the final period up 69-67.

Coach Tom Thibodeau said the tone was set in the first quarter. The Hawks came out with much more effort than they did on Friday, and the Bulls weren't nearly as tight on defense as they had been. Atlanta made 13 of 24 shots in those opening 12 minutes.

"It was too easy," Thibodeau said. "Then we didn't finish the game the way we would have liked."

NOTES: Chicago G Keith Bogans went down awkwardly in the first quarter trying to guard Johnson, spraining his right ankle. Bogans went to the locker room to get it taped and was able to come back in the game, but he finished with only three points. ... Horford got poked in the eye by his former Florida teammate, Noah, after collecting a rebound. Horford was OK, and Noah gave him a pat on the backside.

Bulls-Hawks notebook

THE FACTS: Josh Smith got back to playing the game the way Hawks coach Larry Drew wants, Atlanta made life much more difficult on Bulls guard Derrick Rose, and Atlanta outscored the Bulls 16-4 over the game's final 4:04 Sunday night to even its conference semifinal 2-2 in Philips Arena with a 100-88 win.

Rose followed up his 44-point effort from Game 3 with 34 more points, but was just 12-for-32 and committed all three of his turnovers in the fateful fourth quarter as Atlanta outscored Chicago 33-19 in the period.

Smith scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds in the fourth quarter and finished with 23 points, 16 rebounds and two blocked shots while putting himself in the middle of Atlanta's new up-tempo offense with a team-high eight assists. The Hawks doubled the Bulls in fast-break points 16-8.

Smith took a few of the long jump shots that drive Drew crazy (and made his first shot from beyond nine feet in the series), but did most of his damage in the paint -- where Atlanta outscored Chicago 56-40. Smith led multiple fast breaks as the Hawks hardly resembled the team that sleep-walked through a 99-82 loss at home Friday in Game 2.

Atlanta, which was outrebounded 105-73 while losing Games 2 and 3, was barely edged on the boards Sunday, 37-36, and won the war on the glass in the fourth quarter, 10-5.

Chicago's Carlos Boozer played his most complete game of the series while scoring 18 points with six rebounds, but he did not score in the fourth quarter as Rose took 12 of his team's 17 shots in the period. Luol Deng added 13 points for the Bulls.

Joe Johnson led Atlanta with 24 points, 22 of them coming in the first three quarters, and Al Horford broke out of a scoring slump to add 20 for the visitors. Point guard Jeff Teague and reserve guard Jamal Crawford added 12 points each.

QUOTABLE: "Josh and I have had a number of talks. I know what he brings to the table. When he plays the way he played tonight, we're pretty good. I think he recognizes that. He just sometimes finds his way out on the perimeter, and lets it go. When he's rebounding, running the floor, pushing the basketball ... he has an ability, a very unique ability to affect the game on both ends of the floor. Josh played a phenomenal game."
--Drew, on Smith, who averaged 12.7 points (on 35.9 percent shooting), 8.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists in the first three games of the series. Smith started at small forward rather than power forward as Drew changed his lineup by starting Jason Collins at center, moved Horford to power forward, and brought small forward Marvin Williams off the bench.

THE STAT: 18.8 percent -- the Bulls' mark from three-point territory Sunday night. They were just 3-for-16 on 3s after going 10-for-20 in Game 3. Kyle Korver, Chicago's designated sharpshooter, missed all five of his treys.

TURNING POINT: After Rose tied the game at 84 with a driving layup with 4:31 left in the game, it was all Hawks. Teague -- who made all four of his shots in the second half, countered with a slick drive for the lead, Rose missed a hotly contested drive after that, and Horford added another point-blank shot for an 88-84 Atlanta lead.

After Chicago called timeout with 3:47 left, each team missed a shot and then Teague harrassed Rose into losing his dribble near midcourt, and scooped up the loose Ball. Smith soon passed to Horford for a layup and a 90-84 lead for Atlanta.

Chicago took another timeout, and then Rose and Chicago coach Tom Thibodeau thought Crawford fouled Rose as he took and missed a 3-point shot. There was a whistle on the play, but referee Bennett Salvatore said he blew it inadvertently, and Smith won a jump ball against Joakim Noah.

As the shot clock was about to expire, Smith whipped the ball to a wide-open Horford for a dunk and an eight-point lead with 2:03 left.

Chicago never again threatened.

QUOTABLE II: "I blew my whistle and didn't mean to. I didn't think it was a foul. Having watched replay after the game, it was a foul and I should have called it. I made a mistake. I was wrong."
-- Salvatore, on the inadvertent whistle that amounted to as much as a five-point swing in the game.

QUOTABLE III: "I'm trying to do the things at the three that Deng does. He's a great slasher, plays well off the ball and I wanted to be able to try to do the same things for my ball club. When I'm at the three, I'm kind of like Deng, in a sense, with him slashing and being able to get in the hole.

"The media's trying to T.O. me, that's what I say. If you all want to blame it on me for losing Game 3, it's cool. I'll take it. I'm a man. We've got a quote in the locker room that says, 'Tough times never last but tough people do.' I consider myself a tough person. I knew this rut wasn't going to last."
-- Smith, who in Game 3 had 17 points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots.

HOT: Horford was 9-for-11 after shooting just 12-for-31 in the first three games. ... Teague, who is playing because Atlanta point guard Kirk Hinrich is out with a strained hamstring, shot 6-for-12, and has gone 26-for-50 (52 percent) in the series after playing just over 10 minutes in six first-round games against Orlando. ... Joe Johnson was 9-for-14 shots and is 32-for-59 (54.2 percent) in the series. He's leading Atlanta in scoring in the series, averaging 21 points. In the Hawks' two wins he's averaged 29 points. He's also made 10 of 15 three-pointers, and 10 of 12 free throws. ... Bulls reserve center Omer Asik, who was scoreless with three rebounds combined in the first three games of the series, had three points and eight rebounds Sunday.

NOT: Coming off the bench, Marvin Williams missed all five of his shots for Atlanta. He's averaging just 4.8 points in the series, making 29.6 percent of his shots (8-for-27). ... Korver was just 1-for-8 Sunday, and after making 7 of 13 treys in the first three games he missed all five longball tries Sunday. ... Chicago reserve forward Taj Gibson, who had 11 rebounds in Game 3, did not have a rebound Sunday.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Former Hawk Kevin Willis and former Georgia Tech basketball coaches Bobby Cremins and Paul Hewitt were at the game.

BAD MOVE: Thibodeau's decision to take Rose off Teague and instead have Korver defend the Atlanta point guard left the slow-footed reserve in a bad position on several occasions, especially in the second half. Rose in those situations was usually defending Crawford.

QUOTABLE IV: "I didn't like our defense in the fourth quarter. We drove the ball hard, but didn't get a call and that's the way it goes. They got the ball in the paint with far too much ease. I didn't have any problem with the way Derrick [Rose] played. He was aggressive. I thought there were times he was getting fouled."
-- Thibodeau. (Rose went to the free-throw line more Sunday, where he was 9-for-11, than in Game 3, when he was 8-for-9.)

NOTABLE: Drew's decision to go bigger with his lineup in Game 4 went beyond playing Collins (four points, four fouls) 11:37. Reserve forward/center Zaza Pachulia, who played 25:16 combined in the first three games (with five points and eight rebounds combined), played 25:32 Sunday and pitched in five points and nine rebounds. Eight of those rebounds came in the first half.
