Celtics-Heat Preview

MIAMI (AP) Paul Pierce is from Los Angeles, so he knows a thing or do about Hollywood.

And he knows he'll have to act better if the Boston Celtics are going to avoid getting into a quick two-game hole in their Eastern Conference semifinal series against the Miami Heat.

A day after getting ejected from Boston's Game 1 loss, Pierce acknowledged that his actions were "selfish" and that he needed to do a better job keeping his composure. Nonetheless, he still believes that he was more victim than aggressor during the two plays in which he got technical fouls that sent him to the locker room with 7 minutes left in Miami's 99-90 win.

Game 2 is Tuesday, and Pierce isn't sure if the physicality both teams offered Sunday would carry over.

"This is not a movie or a script," Pierce said. "It's hard to really say what's going to happen game in, game out."

The Heat don't necessarily agree with that.

They think they know exactly what's coming on Tuesday - a much better effort from the Celtics. Boston missed 20 of its first 26 shots in Game 1, never got Kevin Garnett rolling offensively and had Rajon Rondo limited by foul trouble. Even after all that misfortune, the Celtics had their chances to recover from what was once a 19-point hole in Game 1.

"We're physical teams, we're defensive-minded teams, play a similar style of basketball and it's the playoffs," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "That's all it is. We're not overblowing the physicality part of it. We're not trying to be somebody we're not. They're not trying to be anyone they're not. ... We know what our tenets are."

Pierce spoke to reporters Monday for the first time since the ejection. He was not available Sunday night, after he clashed with James Jones with 7:59 remaining following a hard foul, then exchanged words with Dwyane Wade 59 seconds later after the Heat guard ran into his screen. Double-technicals were called after both plays, and Pierce's ejection was automatic on the second.

"I thought I was fouled excessively on both plays," Pierce said.

So did Boston coach Doc Rivers, who is not wavering from the stance he offered in the minutes following Game 1, when he said the Heat were more "chippy" than "physical."

But on Monday, while not backing off that assertion, Rivers said the Celtics had bigger issues than whistles that didn't go their way.

"We didn't handle it very well," Rivers said. "Overall, I thought they hit first the entire game. I'm talking legally - I'm talking their picks, their cuts, their actions. I just thought they played the game with a better force than we played the game, and that's something that shouldn't happen. Both teams should play with the same force."

What Wade and Jones did that hurt Boston most had nothing to do with the two plays that ended Pierce's night. They combined for 63 points on 19-for-28 shooting from the field and an 18-for-19 combined performance from the foul line. Those numbers made LeBron James' 22-point, six-rebound, five-assist statline seem quiet by comparison.

"I would approach this game just like I would approach this game whether I had 12 points (in Game 1) or 38," Wade said. "For me, every game is different with this team. Certain nights, my job is going to be different. They put a lot of attention toward LeBron so I got an opportunity to not have all eyes on me so I got into a rhythm. It might be different next game."

So might the lineups.

Rivers said Monday's practice might move Shaquille O'Neal closer to a return after missing nearly all of the last three months with leg problems. A decision on his Game 2 status likely won't be finalized until Tuesday morning's pregame shootaround. And Miami forward Udonis Haslem worked out again Monday, a day after he nearly made the active roster for the first time since rupturing a foot ligament on Nov. 20.

Both sides would see their depth bolstered if those big men returned, but the Celtics know an O'Neal comeback alone won't be enough of a change if they plan on returning to Boston with a 1-1 split in Miami.

"Miami has two of the best athletes in the game in LeBron James and Dwyane Wade," Celtics center Jermaine O'Neal said. "When they get into the open court, they tend to be very, very tough."

James knows a 1-0 lead against Boston is not enough. When he was with Cleveland a year ago, the Cavaliers had both 1-0 and 2-1 series leads over the Celtics in the East semis.

Undeterred, Boston won in six games - a decision that still stings James.

"We're naturally confident," James said. "But you never get too high or too low in a playoff series. It's one game. Series is not won in one game."

A late 14-0 run lifts Heat past Celtics, 102-91

MIAMI (AP) With the outcome decided in the final seconds, LeBron James walked toward Mario Chalmers to begin his version of a celebration.

He playfully punched his teammate twice in the chest.

Fitting, because James and the Miami Heat have now landed two blows against the Boston Celtics.

James scored 24 of his 35 points in the second half, Dwyane Wade added 28 and the Heat used a late 14-0 run to pull away and beat the aching Celtics 102-91 in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series on Tuesday night.

"Feel good about it," James said. "Series is far - far, far, far - away from over. It's really just beginning for us."

James shot 14 of 25 from the field, and logged 44 minutes with no turnovers. Chris Bosh finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds for Miami, which leads the best-of-seven 2-0.

Game 3 in Boston isn't until Saturday night, and the Celtics may be particularly thankful for the break.

Rajon Rondo played through a balky back to score 20 points and add 12 assists for Boston, which got 16 points from Kevin Garnett and 13 from Paul Pierce - who retreated to the locker room for treatment on his strained left Achilles' in the first half. Ray Allen was held to seven points, and left with what he said was a bruised chest cavity courtesy of an elbow from James in the third quarter.

"Being down 2-0 doesn't scare any of us, doesn't make us nervous," Allen said. "It's just an opportunity to come out shining."

Boston tied the game at 80 on a pair of free throws by Pierce with 7:10 left. The Celtics missed their next six shots and Miami pulled away, taking command of both the game and the series.

"That's our staple. We know the only way for us to win games, especially in the playoffs, is to play defense," James said. "Everyone has each other's back. If one guy gets beat, another steps up. They made a run, a heck of a run ... but we just kept grinding, kept playing our principles, and we finally wore them down."

Jeff Green scored 11 and Delonte West added 10 for the Celtics.

Even for a franchise with such fabled history as the Celtics, an 0-2 deficit represents a colossal challenge.

This is now the ninth time Boston has dropped the first two games in a best-of-seven series. In the previous eight, the Celtics prevailed only against the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1969 NBA finals.

And it's something this group of Celtics has never faced before, either.

The last time Boston lost the first two games of a playoff matchup was in 2004, when it was swept by Indiana. The current core of Celtics had lost Game 1s four other times before this series, then bounced back to win Game 2 each time, against Chicago and Orlando in 2009, then Cleveland and the Lakers in 2010.

Not this time.

"Nothing we can do about it," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "We've got a third game and we've got to take care of that. Whatever the past is, it is. They've won two games at home. But we can't allow them to play like this, or it's going to be tough at our place."

To win this series, Boston will need to prevail four times in a five-game span - which it did in the first round against Miami last year, then again in the second round at the expense of James and the Cavaliers in the East semis. So it can be done, but neither James (7-0) nor Wade (5-0) has ever been part of a playoff series defeat after their clubs won the first two games.

"This is a great team we are going against right now," James said. "We're just trying to give ourselves a good chance to win, just try to keep on attacking them, playing as hard as we can defensively, just trying to wear them down throughout the game, but it's a great team."

That's one of the titles the Heat are trying to claim, too.

James won the MVP award in 2009 and 2010, his reign officially ending a couple hours before Tuesday's game when the NBA made the long-expected announcement that Chicago's Derrick Rose was this season's top player.

James' name did not appear on nine of the 121 ballots cast. Wade was entirely left off all but 10 of the ballots; voters were asked to rank the league's best five players.

They noticed.

"At the end of the day, we don't really play this game for individual awards," Wade said. "He has two MVP trophies, which is awesome. I have a finals MVP trophy. Our body of work speaks for itself. What we've done in this game speaks for itself."

The Celtics had more than a chance to avoid the 0-2 hole.

James scored 12 points in the third quarter, one more than he managed in the first half, to help Miami take a 72-67 cushion into the final 12 minutes. James then added the first basket of the fourth, but Boston answered with a 13-6 run over the next 4 minutes to knot the game at 80.

The outcome was undecided - momentarily.

That's when Miami's big run began, including a three-point play where James dunked and got fouled after Joel Anthony kept an offensive rebound alive. Chalmers started it all with a 3-pointer - his only points of the night - off a pass from Wade, and Miami was on its way.

"Great trust," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said.

Jermaine O'Neal had a chance to end Boston's drought with 4:53 left, but his dunk was partially blocked by Anthony and bounced off the rim. James hit a long jumper from the left corner 17 seconds later, pushing the Heat lead to 92-80, their biggest to that point and the celebration was underway a few minutes later.

"Now the mental discipline begins," Spoelstra said. "This thing is just getting started."

NOTES: All-Star guard Chris Paul sat near the Heat bench, with longtime James confidant Maverick Carter. ... Shaquille O'Neal (calf) was out again for Boston, while the Heat said Udonis Haslem (foot) still "isn't ready" to return from November foot surgery. ... Pierce played 33 minutes, giving him 4,259 in his Celtics playoff career, passing Dennis Johnson (4,258) for seventh in franchise history. ... Heat guard Mike Bibby's steal with 41 seconds left in the first quarter was his 100th in 87 playoff games.

Heat-Celtics notebook

THE FACTS: The Miami Heat took a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals by defeating the Boston Celtics 102-91 Tuesday at AmericanAirlines Arena. LeBron James led all scorers with 35 points, doing most of his work in the second half. With the Celtics closing late, James scored on a three-point play to push the lead to 88-80.

The Heat's Big Three was too much for the Celtics. James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh combined for 80 points, offsetting a slow night from the bench. Wade scored 28 points on 8-for-20 shooting while Bosh added 17 points and 11 rebounds. The Heat shot 45 percent from the field, including 7-for-16 from 3-point range.

The Celtics were led by Rajon Rondo's 20 points and 12 assists, but received subpar games from Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen.

QUOTABLE: "LeBron was physically, mentally, and emotionally tough for us tonight. That set the tone for everybody and Dwyane, obviously, on both ends of the court."

THE STAT: The Heat's Big Three outscored the Celtics' Big Three 80-36. That was the difference. Even though the Celtics' reserves were solid, they can't keep up when the Heat's core players are scoring so much more.

TURNING POINT: The Celtics tied the score at 80 in the fourth quarter, but Wade found an open Mario Chalmers for a 3-pointer that started a 14-0 run. That was just enough to hold off the Celtics, who made several runs in the game.

QUOTABLE II: "They're both playing very well. They've proven that they do this. They're going to get points, and I believed that going into the series. But they can't be so efficient getting 'em."

HOT: James had his best game of the series. The highlight came when he scored 13 points in the third quarter to keep the Heat ahead. He was 14-for-25 from the field and had seven rebounds and two assists.

NOT: After a big Game 1, Celtics guard Ray Allen was held in check for the most part by Wade. Allen was just 2-for-7 from the field. His touches were limited because of a stronger defensive effort by Wade.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: The Heat have said all season that Bosh is the most important player. He scored 17 points, but also pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds while shooting 50 percent from the field.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Rapper Drake, singer Gloria Estefan, actor Christian Slater, former Heat player Glen Rice, tennis player Serena Williams.

GOOD MOVE: The Heat did a solid job of taking Allen out of the game. After giving him several open looks in the series opener, Allen spent the game being blanketed by Wade. Without Allen's outside shooting, it left most of the burden on Pierce and Garnett.

BAD MOVE: The Celtics gave up too many "energy" plays to Joel Anthony. When Anthony gets a blocked shot, rebound or putback, it gives the Heat crowd more emotion. Anthony tipped a ball late in the game that kept a possession alive. It resulted in a 3-point play by James that extended the lead.

NOTABLE: Udonis Haslem and Erick Dampier were both inactive for the Heat in Game 2. Celtics center Shaquille O'Neal has yet to play in the series because of a calf injury. Rivers said O'Neal will be questionable for Game 3. Heat guard Mario Chalmers went to the floor with knee pain after being rolled onto by Glen Davis, but said it may have been an overreaction because it was the same knee he hurt near the end of the regular season.
