Mavericks-Lakers Preview

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) Although they had quite a combustible meeting last month, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Dallas Mavericks claim the clubs' first playoff meeting in 23 years is too important for any thuggish, boorish behavior.

Matt Barnes has already been there, done that, and got the T-shirt.

The Lakers forward's sportswear company is selling shirts generated out of the clubs' ejection-plagued meeting on March 31, but he realizes neither team can waste time shoving anybody around in the postseason.

"We're not worried about anything that happened in the past," said Barnes, who was tossed from that game after a physical confrontation with Jason Terry, who clobbered Steve Blake with a hard foul. "I'm not carrying anything over. I'm not trying to get into trouble or technical fouls or hurt my team in any way. We're going out there to try to win, play hard. That's the only chance any team has to beat us, to play harder."

Game 1 is Monday night at Staples Center.

Dallas is the second-seeded Lakers' highest-seeded remaining road block to their fourth straight NBA finals, and the Mavericks have a combination of inside toughness and depth that could play well against Los Angeles' weaknesses. The Lakers rarely hesitate to get physical when necessary, and the New Orleans Hornets reacted poorly to that postseason toughness in the first round - a mistake the Mavs insist they won't make.

"You've just got to know what you're there for," Dallas big man Brendan Haywood said. "You can't get suckered into any fake tough-guy stuff, or pushing and shoving. You've got to go out there and do your job, stand your ground."

The clubs' leaders have kept the peace so far - even if it might be paining them. Phil Jackson and Mark Cuban are two of the best needlers in basketball, but the Lakers' 11-time champion coach and the Mavericks' billionaire owner kept their barbs to themselves over the weekend.

Jackson was full of praise for the Mavericks' consistent excellence and Cuban's role in it, even after a season in which Cuban referred to Jackson as Lakers executive Jeanie Buss' "boy toy" after Jackson made a crack about officiating.

Even something that sounded like an insult was intended as a compliment.

"They're the best team money can buy, really," Jackson said after a summation of Dallas' strengths.

Then, after a beat: "So are we."

Jackson kept his focus on more important matters, such as the continued progress of Kobe Bryant's sprained left ankle. Although Bryant insisted his latest injury is no problem, Jackson worries about the effect of inactivity on his leading scorer's sore joints.

The Mavericks are worried about Bryant for different reasons - including their lack of a defender who's likely to be able to guard Bryant by himself. After watching Bryant's performance on that sprain in the final two wins over the Hornets, Dallas isn't buying any suggestion Kobe isn't 100 percent.

"(Shawn Marion) will be on him at times," Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said. "Shawn is experienced. He's played him a lot. (DeShawn) Stevenson has played him a lot. (Jason) Kidd has played him. We'll have other guys ready. We'll have the kitchen sink ready. He's a great player and all that, but we're focused on our own game."

Dallas and Los Angeles both finished the regular season with 57 wins apiece. The Lakers won two of three meetings for the tiebreaker, and they kept that home-court advantage by the slimmest of margins, needing an overtime victory in their season finale at Sacramento.

That game turned on a desperation 3-pointer by Bryant, but the two-time NBA finals MVP had already forgotten about it Saturday.

"I don't care about home court, I really don't," Bryant said. "It makes a lot of people nervous, but I don't care."

While the Mavericks have disappointed their fans during most every postseason in the otherwise wildly successful Cuban era, the Lakers' title banners delineate the difference between the franchises. Bryant has declared that Los Angeles' back-to-back championships guarantee nothing this spring, while the Mavericks realize a win over the Lakers would be a tremendous breakthrough and a springboard to the success they've never achieved.

Lakers center Andrew Bynum thinks these Mavs are good enough to do it, and he gives much of the credit to Haywood and Tyson Chandler, the 7-footers brought in to fix many of Dallas' historic playoff flaws.

"It just makes their team a little more defensive-oriented," Bynum said. "You can't win in the playoffs without defense, and picking up 7-footers is one way to address that."

Two years ago, Bynum worked out in the summer with Chandler, the Compton product and NBA journeyman who has blossomed in Dallas. Unlike most Los Angeles kids, Chandler says he didn't dream of taking the court in that famed gold uniform.

He dreamed of doing exactly what he'll try to do Monday night.

"When you're in the backyard and you're putting up shots and you're doing the countdown, some players would imagine themselves being other players," Chandler recalled. "I would imagine I was killing the Lakers, so hopefully my dreams come true. I guess that I didn't think I could be one, so the next-best thing was beating them."

Mavs rally to stun Lakers in Game 1

LOS ANGELES (AP) Even after the Los Angeles Lakers blew a 16-point lead in the second half, Kobe Bryant had two chances in the final seconds to erase the Dallas Mavericks' big comeback with yet another game-winning shot.

Bryant and Pau Gasol fumbled away the Lakers' first opportunity before Bryant just plain missed his last shot, allowing Dirk Nowitzki and his tenacious Mavs to take an early second-round series lead.

Nowitzki scored 28 points and hit two go-ahead free throws with 19.5 seconds left before Gasol and Bryant made a crucial turnover, and the Mavericks rallied for a 96-94 victory in Game 1 on Monday night.

"You've got to make plays, and you've got to dodge some bullets," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. "We did both."

Nowitzki had 14 rebounds for the Mavericks, who steadily erased a huge third-quarter deficit before the dramatic finish to the perennial playoff teams' first postseason meeting in 23 years.

The Lakers are "highly concerned," said Bryant, who scored 21 of his 36 points in the second half. "This team can beat us, it's clear."

After Nowitzki's free throws gave Dallas its first lead of the second half, Bryant fell down under defensive pressure from Jason Kidd while trying to get the ball from Gasol with 5 seconds to play. After one free throw by Kidd, Bryant missed a catch-and-shoot 3-pointer off the back rim just before the buzzer.

"It's definitely a great win for us, but if you look at their last series, they lost Game 1 and came right back and won the next two and had the series back in control," Nowitzki said. "We'd love to go for it in Game 2."

Game 2 is Wednesday night at Staples Center.

Gasol had 15 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists for the second-seeded Lakers, who lost their second straight Game 1 after winning six straight openers over the previous two seasons. Their loss to New Orleans two weeks ago was much more surprising than this loss to the playoff-tested Mavs, but the Lakers' lack of poise down the stretch should be scary to anybody anticipating a threepeat.

"We felt like we gave the game away," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "I'm not so sure Dallas didn't outplay us, but the players felt like we gave it away. ... The game was won in the third quarter when we got the lead and stopped playing defense and stopped playing offense. It took a lot of energy out of us and gave a lot of energy to them."

The Mavericks trailed 92-87 with 3:32 to play, but finished on a 9-2 run - showing all the late-game tenacity that's expected of Bryant and the two-time defending champions.

"We did well, but I think we can do better," said Shawn Marion, who scored 10 points for Dallas. "Is there anybody that knows we play good D?"

Lamar Odom scored 15 points for Los Angeles, which nursed a small lead throughout the second half into the final minute. Nowitzki scored in the lane with 40 seconds left to trim the deficit to 94-93, and after Jason Terry swiped the ball from Bryant, Gasol inexplicably fouled Nowitzki on the Mavericks' inbounds play, setting in motion the final events.

Terry scored 13 of his 15 points in the first half to lead the Mavs' reserves, who outscored Los Angeles' bench 40-25.

The Lakers took a 53-44 halftime lead with a 14-2 run that included four points in the final 0.7 seconds.

Terry got too close to Odom's last-ditch heave from halfcourt right before the buzzer, and Odom made three free throws. Nowitzki then got a technical foul for throwing an aggressive elbow under the hoop while scrapping with Ron Artest, and Bryant hit a final free throw.

Dallas made a 20-6 run shortly after falling behind 60-44 to open the third quarter. Bryant singlehandedly kept the Lakers ahead with 12 consecutive points, but Jackson blamed the defeat on that stretch of awful basketball after taking a commanding lead.

"I know we got that crazy last minute there, but we've got to come out in the second half and play better," said Andrew Bynum, who managed eight points and five rebounds for Los Angeles. "We didn't lose it at the end. We lost it in the third quarter."

Both teams put aside the ugliness of their ejection-filled meeting on March 31 while preparing for the franchises' first postseason meeting since the 1988 Western Conference finals.

Jackson and Mavericks owner Mark Cuban declined to rekindle their history of mutual sniping in the media, instead praising each other in recent days. Jackson even said Cuban would be an excellent prospective owner for the troubled Los Angeles Dodgers, although Cuban declined to comment on the much-rumored prospect before Game 1.

Both clubs finished off their first-round series in six games after splitting the first four. The Lakers took control against the Hornets after the opening stunner, while the Mavericks bounced back admirably after blowing a 23-point lead in a Game 4 loss to Portland.

Mavericks-Lakers notebook

THE FACTS: Jason Kidd was moving like the Kidd of yesteryear.

Dirk Nowitzki was clutch.

And the Lakers appeared to be far from the team seeking a three-peat. Instead, they made back-to-back-to-back critical errors.

The final minute was not Phil Jackson-esque execution as the Lakers squandered a 16-point second half lead and collapsed mentally in the final 30 seconds of the game as the Mavericks wrested the opportunity, 96-94, to take Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals Monday at Staples Center.

To find the difference maker for Dallas look no further than Nowitzki, who was sensational down the stretch scoring 11 of his team-high 28 points in the fourth quarter and snagging a game-high 14 rebounds. Jason Terry chipped in with 15 and Kidd -- who was stellar defensively down the stretch against Kobe Bryant -- added seven points, a game-high 11 assists and three steals.

The team that takes the first game on the road in a seven-game series ends up winning the series 78.6 percent of the time (11 of 14).

Three mistakes in the final 30 seconds cost the Lakers, who now find themselves down 1-0 for the second time this postseason. Bryant drove the lane with Kidd glued to his side, jumped up and saw Tyson Chandler and had no one to throw it to but Terry. With his team in the penalty, Pau Gasol reached over the back of Nowitzki and tired to poke the ball free, fouling him some 30 feet away from the basket. Down by one and 8.8 seconds left, Gasol then botched a handoff to Bryant, who slipped on the exchange with Kidd draped all over him. Kidd split the pair.

Granted the Lakers squandered their double-digit lead and a game-high, 36-point effort by Bryant, they had a shot down the stretch. With 3.1 seconds left and down two, Bryant had a wide-open look as he came off a curl. He had his shoulders squared and fired a 3-pointer from the right wing. Long.

THE STAT: Two -- The number of points the two-time defending champs scored in the final 3:32 of play.

QUOTABLE: "We can say that we didn't play our best game, but we found a way to win. That's the bottom line this time of year ... the Lakers have been in this position a lot of times and they've found a way to win the series, so we haven't done anything yet."

QUOTABLE II: "It seemed like that ball took forever to come down. Once I saw it hit rim, I probably was the happiest person in the room ... you kind of are grown to expect him to make those shots. When he had another chance at it, I was like come on we have to play some (defense) because I grew up in LA and I've seen this too many times."

QUOTABLE III: "Jason Kidd is one of the few guys capable of having a possession like that against a top player. There was a reason we try to keep him off Bryant a lot of the game."

QUOTABLE IV: "Well we went in the locker room and we gave (the game) away. I'm not so sure Dallas didn't outplay us, but I just felt like we gave it away."

TURNING POINT: After trailing by 16, the Mavericks made a 20-6 run in the middle of the third quarter to get to within 66-64 of the Lakers with 4:04 left in the period. They never trailed by more than eight from that point on.

QUOTABLE V: "We maybe got a little carried away. We didn't make good decisions offensively and we paid the price defensively. We gave them a chance that way. We got a little too excited at that particular time."

HOT: Bryant, who has been fighting a sore left ankle, has had some trouble with the Mavericks this season. Dallas has held Bryant to 21.7 points, the lowest output he has had against any Western Conference squad this season. Monday was a different story. Bryant exploded for 36 points on 14-for-29 shooting, including four threes.

NOT: After being one of the most consistent Lakers in the first round series against the Hornets when he averaged 11.8 points on 50 percent shooting and five rebounds, Ron Artest flipped a complete 180. Artest was ineffective to say the least, scoring two points on 1-for-8 shooting. He also missed all three of his 3-pointers.

GOOD MOVE: The Mavericks came out extremely flat to end the second quarter and to start the third period and found themselves down 60-44. Carlisle went to his bench. He inserted Corey Brewer, who gave the Mavericks five quick points off the bench and helped Dallas to 20-6 rally.

BAD MOVE: The Lakers failed to get the ball in the post, a running theme with this year's squad since the second half of the regular season. Andrew Bynum, who had eight points on 3-for-8 shooting, had just three shots in the entire second half (one in the third quarter). Gasol, who had 15 points on 5-for-10 shooting and 11 rebounds, had just one shot in the final quarter. Another bad move by Gasol was his crucial foul on Nowitzki near halfcourt when he tried to reach over his back for the steal with 19.5 seconds to go.

QUOTABLE VI: "It was a really bad ending...we should have won that game...to me that call was very questionable. At that particular moment even more. We didn't seem to get the same on the other end."

NOTABLE: The Mavericks bench also had a 40-25 advantage and as a team, the Mavericks outshot the Lakers 49.4 percent to 42.9.
