OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) George Karl doesn't know if there's much more his Denver Nuggets can do to slow down the NBA's scoring champion and his All-Star sidekick.

Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook combined for 72 points in Oklahoma City's Game 1 victory over Denver, yet Karl doesn't believe his Nuggets were that far off on defense.

Karl said Tuesday that his breakdown of the game tape had Durant and Westbrook going a combined 18 for 25 on jump shots. And 14 of the made baskets came with a Denver player's hand in their face.

Those are exactly the kind of shots Karl wants Denver's defense to force.

"You want to overreact to that? You want to go off and double-team and give up open jump shots? I'm not there yet," Karl said after the Nuggets' practice at the Oklahoma City Arena.

"Especially when most of the game we were in a comfort zone and we had a hell of a chance to win the game."

Game 2 is Wednesday night in Oklahoma City.

To vanquish the Nuggets 107-103 in Game 1, Durant and Westbrook - the NBA's highest scoring tandem other than Miami's LeBron James and Dwyane Wade during the regular season - combined for more points in regulation than they did in any regular-season game. The only time they had more in a game was when Durant scored 40 and Westbrook 35 in a double-overtime win against Washington in January.

"We did some things that we really wanted to do against them," Karl said. "So, do you want to change up to maybe take more concern about Westbrook and Durant scoring big numbers, or do you want to make sure you keep your foundation of what you definitely want to do against them?

"I personally think it's a game of little adjustments more than big adjustments."

Durant was able to handle a variety of defenders thrown at him by Denver on Sunday night, including the lanky Wilson Chandler and Danilo Gallinari, a beefier Kenyon Martin and even 6-foot-1 point guard Raymond Felton.

He shot over the shorter defenders, drove past the bigger ones and got to the foul line when his shots weren't falling. He scored 20 of his 41 points on 2-point baskets, 12 on free throws and nine on 3-pointers in a well-rounded performance.

"It makes you think a little bit more because you're used to going against one defender," Durant said. "But when they send Kenyon Martin, Gallinari, Wilson Chandler and even Felton sometimes, you've got to switch things up. I was able to switch a few things up.

"I shot some bad shots and I got some turnovers but I was able to just stick with it and if I saw an opening, just try be aggressive and try to make the right passes."

Martin suggested several strategies Denver could use to slow Durant - including sending a double-team to make him pass and making him work harder on defense. He recalled that Durant used to need to cover Carmelo Anthony on defense when he played the Nuggets and "that boy beats you up bad when he's got the ball, so that takes your legs a little bit."

"You've got to make him guard, you've got to make him pass the ball - make him do the things that didn't get him drafted," Martin said. "Scoring got him drafted. ... They didn't draft Kevin Durant because he's an excellent passer or he's a lockdown defender. I know this for a fact."

Karl, though, was resistant to sending double-teams that could create open shots elsewhere when he felt Durant and Westbrook had success despite being closely guarded. He also was hesitant to go to a zone - an effective tool for a handful of Thunder opponents this season - when he hasn't practiced it much with a roster that was overhauled when Anthony was traded in February.

"I can't worry about that," Durant said. "I've just got to worry about going out there and playing my game, just going out there and playing hard and being aggressive on the offensive end and going from there. If they do double, I know I've got faith in my teammates that they'll come through."

Oklahoma City depended heavily on Durant and Westbrook in Game 1, with both scoring at least 30 points in the same game - something they did only five times in the regular season. Only one other player - Eric Maynor with 12 - had more than five points in Game 1.

"We did OK. We do need to do a better job giving those guys some outlets, but I thought we were solid," Nick Collison said. "A lot of things we do are not in terms of scoring points."

And Karl wants to keep it that way.

"I don't want to give them rebounds, I don't want to give them transition layups and I want to play like we played the last three quarters of the game - trying not to foul," Karl said. "We win the free throw line. They don't win the free throw line.

"Those are our foundations, and it has nothing to do with Westbrook and Durant."

Thunder dominate Nuggets 106-89, take 2-0 lead

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) The Oklahoma City Thunder are more than just Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook.

Way more.

A game after scoring a combined 72 points, Oklahoma City's All-Star duo got plenty of help from the rest of the Thunder to build a commanding first-half lead and beat the Denver Nuggets 106-89 in Game 2 on Wednesday night.

The first-round playoff series shifts to Denver on Saturday night with Oklahoma City leading 2-0.

"Everybody chipped in tonight," said Durant, the NBA's scoring champion the past two seasons. "That's what we're going to need."

Durant scored 23 points and Westbrook added 21, but everyone else contributed to a dominant early stretch that propelled Oklahoma City to a 26-point lead early in the second quarter.

Ty Lawson scored 20 points to lead Denver, which could only get as close as 10 in the fourth quarter before Oklahoma City put the game away.

"We gave them too many minutes, too many possessions of they were totally in control," Denver coach George Karl said. "They were energized, they were more physical, they were quicker, probably smarter. ... The hole was just too big. When it looked like we could get it under 10, a 3-ball would go in or an offensive rebound would break our heart."

The rematch of a series opener that went right down to the wire and featured a controversial non-call on a goaltending on the Thunder's go-ahead basket with 65 seconds left couldn't have been much different than Game 1.

Oklahoma City got a balanced performance, with James Harden providing 18 points and Serge Ibaka adding 12 points and 12 rebounds. Kendrick Perkins had 11 rebounds as the Thunder piled up a 41-19 edge on the boards by late in the third quarter.

"We've done it all year," coach Scott Brooks said. "You don't win the games we've won just having one or two guys. I really believed those guys were going to step up and score some points."

Nene and Raymond Felton added 16 points apiece for the Nuggets.

Denver made a brief rally to get within 86-76 after consecutive layups by Lawson and Felton with 8:33 to play, but Brooks called a timeout to get Westbrook back in the game and stop the comeback.

Oklahoma City held Denver without a basket for 3 minutes to get started on a 14-5 run that put the game away. Westbrook hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key, then stuck out three fingers on each hand, blew on them and stuck them down to his sides as if holstering them.

Durant let out a scream after leaping to slam down Daequan Cook's missed 3-pointer on the next possession, and the celebration was on.

But not for long. The Thunder are only halfway to their first playoff series win since relocating from Seattle, and there's more work to be done.

"If come with the wrong mind set, not focused and not prepared right, it'll be tough for us to win - especially in Denver," Durant said. "But I don't worry about that. I think we prepare right, our coaches do a great job, we go out and play hard.

"If we do that, we give ourselves chance to win."

Oklahoma City has beaten the Nuggets four times in 16 days, sweeping regular-season games on each team's court in a four-day stretch earlier this month and now protecting home court to start the playoffs.

To stay alive, Denver must return the favor by winning four of five over an eight-day span.

"They are really good. You expect them to play like that," Denver's Danilo Gallinari said. "But we just have to play better."

In a reversal from the first game, it was the Thunder who came out hot.

Durant and Westbrook opened the game with 3-pointers, and Oklahoma City cruised to a 29-10 lead late in the first quarter. Kenyon Martin and Karl both drew technical fouls for the frustrated Nuggets, who seemed to be constantly looking for whistles that didn't come.

Harden hit two 3-pointers as Oklahoma City scored 12 of the first 14 points in the second quarter to make it 43-17 within the first 15 1/2 minutes of the game.

In Game 1, Denver made its first seven shots and led by 13 on three occasions in the first half.

"We didn't want those guys to come out and have a shooting barrage like they did in Game 1," Durant said. "I think we forced them into some tough shots. They missed a few easy ones, but I think we did a good job of closing the paint and putting Nene on the free throw line as opposed to giving him dunks like he did in Game 1."

Al Harrington finally brought the Nuggets to life with a 3-pointer from the top of the key, starting a string of seven straight points for Denver. Within 5 minutes, the Nuggets shaved 14 points off the deficit.

Harrington made another 3 in a 9-0 run, and Denver was suddenly within 50-38 after Lawson's jumper along the right side of the lane with 3:42 left before halftime.

The comeback fizzled, though, as the Nuggets made just one basket in the first 5 minutes of the second half.

"It's a game to four, and we've got two points. That's how we look at it," Nick Collison said. "We need three and four to move on, so we'll be ready to play when we get there."

NOTES: After making their first seven shots in Game 1, the Nuggets missed their first six in Game 2 and got their first make off Ibaka's goaltend of a fast-break layup by Lawson. ... Karl said before the game he remembered being suspended while coaching in the CBA for kicking a ball toward the head of official Monty McCutchen, who was part of Wednesday night's crew. ... Reserves J.R. Smith and Chris Andersen didn't play in the second half for the Nuggets. Karl said when Smith came into the game - 33 seconds before Andersen - was when the "flood gates" opened. The Thunder's lead went from 10 to 25 with the two on the court together.

Nuggets-Thunder notebook

THE FACTS: The Oklahoma City Thunder jumped out to a 43-17 lead against the Denver Nuggets in the first half and withstood a couple of Denver runs to cruise to a 106-89 win over the Nuggets. Oklahoma City moves out to a 2-0 lead in their best of seven playoff series. Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook again led the Thunder, but instead of combining for 72 points as they did Sunday the number was just 44 Wednesday. Durant led with 23 and Westbrook added 21. Thunder sixth man James Harden came up big this time with 18 points. Serge Ibaka added a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Kendrick Perkins pulled down 11 boards for OKC. The Thunder dominated the glass, outrebounding Denver 54-31. The Nuggets had four players in double figures led by Ty Lawson's 20 points. Nene and Raymond Felton added 16 apiece. The Thunder never trailed and have won five of the six games the two teams have played this season.

QUOTABLE: "That was a very good win, we did what we had to do, protect our home court. I thought the start of the game was about as good as we can play at both ends of the floor."

THE STAT: Denver had averaged 47 points in the paint against Oklahoma City in the five previous games, Wednesday night the Nuggets were held to just 28 paint points. The Thunder had 30.

TURNING POINT: The beginning of the game rattled the Nuggets and energized the Thunder players and their raucous fans. OKC went on a 16-1 run at one point to lead 31-15 after the first quarter and 43-17 four minutes into the second.

HOT: During a 21-7 Nuggets run in the second quarter, cutting a 26-point Thunder lead down to 12, Denver was 7-for-8...After going just 3-for-13 in Game 1... Ibaka (4-for-5) and Harden (3-for-4) combined to go 7-for-9 in the first half...Also in the first half Oklahoma City was 15-for-16 (93.8 percent) at the free-throw line...Nick Collison finished the game 4-for-5 and Ibaka finished 5-for-8.

INSIDE THE ARENA: 18,203 "Thunder Blue" tee-shirts were again distributed to the sell-out crowd. NBA "Superfan" James Goldstein attended the game and sat court side.

GOOD MOVE: Karl decided to put Chandler on Westbrook after seeing Westbrook torch Denver's point guards for 31 points Sunday night. In the first half Chandler held Westbrook to just nine points on 3-for-10 shooting.

GOOD MOVE II: Westbrook, being pressured in the back court by Chandler gets away, drives into the lane with a spin move then leaps to deliver a soft finger roll basket.

BAD MOVE: Denver forward Kenyon Martin was not happy that officials didn't call a foul on Ibaka in the first quarter after Ibaka went up hard to challenge a Martin shot. Going back down court Martin gave Ibaka a forearm shot right in front of lead official Monty McCutchen who T'd up Martin.

BAD MOVE TOO: Midway through the fourth quarter, Chandler fired a backwards pass toward forward Al Harrington but Harrington made a quick move along the baseline just as Chandler made his pass and the ball sailed into the crowd.

NOTABLE: Through the history of the NBA playoffs 94 percent of teams with a 2-0 series lead go on to win the series.

UP NEXT: The scene shifts to Denver for Game 3 of the Thunder-Nuggets series. Tip-off is set for 10:30 p.m. ET Saturday inside the Pepsi Center.
