Rockets-Timberwolves Preview

The Minnesota Timberwolves have struggled for much of their existence, but they've finished with sole possession of the NBA's worst record only once.

The Timberwolves will need some help to avoid that fate this season, even if they snap a 14-game skid in Wednesday night's finale against the visiting Houston Rockets.

It's been almost two months since Minnesota (17-64) clinched its 14th losing campaign in 22 seasons and sixth in a row. The Timberwolves, though, had perhaps some solace in knowing that Cleveland's struggles were even worse for much of this season.

That changed during Minnesota's current slide, its longest since dropping 16 in a row while finishing 15-67 last season - matching the worst record in franchise history. The Timberwolves were also 15-67 in 1991-92, the only time they finished with the worst record in the league.

With Monday's 135-127 overtime loss in Phoenix, Minnesota fell one game behind Cleveland for the NBA's worst mark. The Cavaliers wrap up the season Wednesday with a visit from Washington, which is a league-worst 3-37 away from home.

Minnesota snapped a 13-game skid to Houston (42-39) with a 112-108 victory Feb. 8, but might not have its leading scorer and rebounder from that game. A groin injury has kept Kevin Love, who had 20 points and 14 boards in the win, out for five straight and eight of the last 10 contests.

Love might have been able to help his team end its losing streak Monday. The Wolves had one of their best scoring efforts of the season but couldn't hold on to a late six-point lead.

Michael Beasley, who had a team-best 26 points, had a chance to complete a go-ahead, three-point play with eight seconds left in regulation but couldn't convert the free throw.

"It hurts," Beasley said. "I could have won the game."

The Rockets are out of the playoffs despite recording their fifth consecutive winning season.

They didn't have starters Kyle Lowry (foot) and Luis Scola (knee) in the lineup for the second straight game in a 98-91 overtime loss to Dallas on Monday.

Kevin Martin led Houston with 28 points, the 13th time in 15 games he's had at least 20.

"It just shows how every game could go either way," center Chuck Hayes told the team's official website. "Every game we've had, we've had our chances to win. Some we did, some we let slip away. ... That's a prime example of what our season has been like."

Despite being eliminated, Rockets coach Rick Adelman said his team isn't conceding anything to the Timberwolves.

"We are not going to cave in Minnesota," he said. "Let's finish this thing out and see if we can get a road win. That's what it's all about. Everybody's getting paid here, you're all professionals. Whether you get eliminated or not, that's not who we are is (a team that) caves in to the situation."

Houston is seeking its seventh consecutive victory at the Target Center.

Rockets beat Timberwolves 121-102 in season finale

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) The Houston Rockets and Minnesota Timberwolves saw disappointing seasons come to a merciful end Wednesday night.

Now they both head into an offseason of uncertainty, not sure when they'll be playing again or who will be coaching them when they return from what many fear will be an extended lockout.

Chase Budinger scored a career-high 35 points and Kevin Martin added 25 to lead the Rockets to a 121-102 victory over the Timberwolves in the season finale for both teams.

"I just enjoy these guys so much," Rockets coach Rick Adelman said. "You look at tonight, we scored (121) points and we had 32 assists. Really unselfish again tonight. I just love the way they finished the season. It's just like the did it all year. We could've caved in a couple of times and we never did it all year long."

Michael Beasley scored 34 points and Anthony Randolph had 23 for the Timberwolves (17-65), who lost their last 15 games of the season to finish with the worst record in the NBA.

"I'm going to hold on to the positives," Wolves coach Kurt Rambis said. "Obviously the record was atrocious. Nobody feels good about that. But a lot of guys made tremendous improvement."

Houston's Goran Dragic chipped in 11 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds for the first triple-double of his career. Courtney Lee added 22 points and the Rockets shot 50 percent for the game.

"I don't know what got into me," Dragic said.

The Rockets led by 21 points early in the third quarter, but the Wolves had a 25-6 run to pull to 90-89 heading into the final period of the season.

Beasley was electric on offense, topping 30 points for the first time since Jan. 26 against Oklahoma City. He shot 13 of 27 and scored every way possible.

But like he has done all season, he struggled defend the opposing small forward, leaving Budinger open on the perimeter time and time again. Budinger's jumper from the top of the key gave the Rockets a 107-100 lead with less than five minutes to play, and the Wolves faded from there.

The Rockets (43-39) played without point guard Kyle Lowry, who missed the game with a sore left foot, but finished the season with one more victory than last season.

Timberwolves All-Star forward Kevin Love watched from the bench for the sixth straight game because of a groin injury, a disappointing end to a year in which he won the rebound title with 15.2 per game.

Rambis has two years left on his deal, but team president David Kahn declined to comment on his job security at a press conference earlier in the day.

"I love Kurt," Beasley said. "I really don't want Kurt to go anywhere. If it happens, it happens. That's life and you've got to move on."

Adelman's future is just as cloudy. He has coached the Rockets for the last four seasons, guiding them through a rough period of injuries to Yao Ming, the trade of Tracy McGrady and rebuilding around Martin.

The Rockets won eight of 10 games as March closed to sneak into playoff contention, but they were eliminated from the playoffs with a loss to Sacramento last Friday.

The Rockets will miss the playoffs for the second consecutive season after making it five of the previous six seasons. Adelman has coached the team to a winning record four straight seasons in the powerful Western Conference.

"Our team wanted to win this game for him," Budinger said. "He's such a great coach, a great guy and I really hope he's back next year."

NOTES: Wolves PG Jonny Flynn missed the game due to personal reasons. C Darko Milicic sat out because of a sprained left ankle. ... Newly drafted Lynx star Maya Moore had a third-row seat at halfcourt. ... Hip-hop star P. Diddy attended the game as well.

Rockets-Wolves notebook

THE FACTS: With nothing for either team to play for but pride and with defense a rare commodity, the Houston Rockets had the final offensive surge, defeating the Minnesota Timberwolves, 121-102. Chase Budinger scored a career-high 35 points to lead the Rockets and Goran Dragic achieved his first career triple-double with 11 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists.

THE STAT: With Kevin Love on the bench due to a strained groin, Houston was able to control the boards, outrebounding Minnesota 56-49. Houston also had 32 assists, compared to Minnesota's 20.

TURNING POINT: Leading by one going into the final quarter, Houston outscored Minnesota 31-13 in the final quarter to secure the victory.

QUOTABLE II: "I am going to hold on to the fact that there were a hole lot of positive things that happened this season. Obviously, the record was atrocious. NOTABLE: The speculation is that Rambis' job is in jeopardy. The interview given by Minnesota general manager David Kahn, Wednesday, if anything, amplified that speculation.
