The Atlanta Hawks and Charlotte Bobcats are finishing up the regular season in disappointing fashions.

The Hawks, at least, have the playoffs to look forward to.

Atlanta, which will likely rest its starters again with its playoff seeding already settled, tries to avoid heading into the postseason with a sixth straight defeat Wednesday night when it visits a Bobcats team coming off its first win this month.

The Hawks (44-37) will open the playoffs as the Eastern Conference's fifth seed in a first-round series against Orlando. Atlanta won the season series with the Magic 3-1, and coach Larry Drew is already looking ahead to that matchup.

"Mentally and physically we have to start getting ready for (Orlando)," Drew said after Monday's 98-90 loss to Miami. "I'm just hoping I can have my players as healthy as they can be as they head into that series."

The Hawks have been locked into the fifth seed for the last week, and the outcomes of the last three games haven't mattered much to Drew.

"I think it's more important to rest starters and get out of these last few games as healthy as we can," he said. "Yes, we would like to break the losing streak. Yes, we would like to have a win to gain some momentum heading into the playoffs.

"But I can live with healthy players better than I can live with a win from a game that has very little meaning."

Drew has rested his starters in the fourth quarter in each of the last two games, and his reserves nearly pulled out a win Monday against a Heat team that was trying to secure the East's second seed.

After trailing by 20 points with 3:19 remaining in the third quarter, Atlanta tied it at 88 with 3:28 left in the fourth but was unable to pull ahead.

"It's a confidence booster for the second unit," said reserve Jeff Teague, who had 10 points. "If we get in during the playoffs, we know we could actually make an impact."

Atlanta, which hasn't lost six consecutive games since Feb. 8-20, 2008, also received an encouraging performance from Josh Smith, who had a team-high 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting after sitting out the previous three games with right knee swelling.

While the Hawks, 2-1 against Charlotte this season, are preparing for a fourth straight playoff appearance, the Bobcats (33-48) will miss the postseason for the sixth time in their seven-year history.

Charlotte was one-half game out of eighth place in the East on Feb. 26 but has lost 16 of 23 since. The Bobcats were eliminated from playoff contention with an overtime loss to Orlando last Wednesday, their fourth straight defeat.

Charlotte suffered two more losses before Monday's 105-103 win over New Jersey, its first in April. The game looked like it was going to overtime until D.J. Augustin hit a fadeaway jumper with 1.1 seconds remaining.

"I'm just glad we got the win," said Augustin, who finished with 19 points. "I'm glad I made the big shot and now we have a chance to head to the summer with another one."

Bobcats send Hawks to 6th straight defeat, 96-85

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Plenty of rest. Zero momentum.

The Atlanta Hawks can only hope that combination helps give them a chance in the playoffs.

Gerald Henderson scored 20 points, D.J. Augustin added 17 points and seven assists and the Charlotte Bobcats sent the Hawks to the postseason on a six-game losing streak with a 96-85 victory Wednesday night.

With no starter playing more than 25 minutes and only Kirk Hinrich (10 points) scoring in double figures, coach Larry Drew made sure the Hawks can't complain of tired legs ahead of their first-round opener Saturday at Orlando.

But Atlanta last lost six straight games midway through the 2007-08 season. Not the place you'd like to be as the Hawks try to reverse last season's ugly four-game sweep to the Magic in the second round.

"I was hoping that it wouldn't end like this," Drew said. "The situation with the playoffs was one of my concerns. After we did lock up the fifth spot, I was hoping I could pull it out of our guys to continue to play hard and continue to really compete."

Instead it was the Bobcats playing harder even with nothing to play for.

Closing a tumultuous season that saw a coaching change, a major trade and no repeat playoff appearance, Charlotte built a 20-point second-quarter lead and withstood Atlanta's reserve-fueled second-half run to finish with a two-game winning streak.

The Bobcats put five players in double figures and shot 50 percent despite playing an eighth straight game without top scorer Stephen Jackson (hamstring). The Bobcats earned a season split with the Hawks despite dressing nine players for the seventh straight game.

"I told them we must win this ball game so we can go into the next season on a high note," said coach Paul Silas, who took over for Larry Brown in December. "That's exactly what happened and I have to commend the guys."

The victory came a few hours after a rare media session in which owner Michael Jordan insisted that "barring injuries we would have been in the playoffs." But Charlotte went just 9-16 after trading former All-Star Gerald Wallace, a deal that netted two first-round picks and opened salary-cap space.

"We don't have to sit on our hands this summer," Jordan said.

The Hawks hope their summer doesn't start early after an uninspiring end to the regular season. Atlanta took three of four from Orlando in the regular season, but were blown out in four straight playoff games a year ago.

"It's completely different. It's a new year," forward Al Horford said. "We're playing a different lineup against them and it's been to our favor this season. That's why we feel so confident going into the series."

The good news is solid play from the same bench that staged a late comeback before falling to Miami on Monday. Josh Powell scored 16 points, Damien Wilkins and Jamal Crawford added 14 points and Jeff Teague had 10.

Good thing, because Atlanta's starters, which didn't include Marvin Williams, managed 20 points. Joe Johnson was held to two points on 1-of-6 shooting in just over 10 minutes. Josh Smith had four points in 10 minutes.

"Both Joe and Josh, I could have played them the second half but I just didn't feel that the energy I saw in the first half would have just jeopardized those guys in the second half," Drew said. "We got out of this thing pretty healthy."

With an all reserve lineup, Atlanta got to 78-74 early in the fourth quarter before Charlotte's suspect bench came to the rescue. Garrett Temple, an NBA Development League callup thrust into the No. 2 point guard job, hit a 3. D.J. White, acquired in a minor trade with Oklahoma City at the deadline, added a dunk and a jumper in a 7-0 run to put it away.

"All in all I think we did very well with what we had to work with," Silas said. "Going forward, they understand now what's needed."

NOTES: Silas said he'll stress to Jackson that after initially coming back too soon and re-injuring his hamstring, he must get healed correctly in the offseason. "I'm not advocating him working nearly as hard as D.J. Augustin or Gerald Henderson, but he needs to work on his game," Silas said. "All the guys have to come back in shape." ... F Boris Diaw played in all 82 games for a second straight season for Charlotte and extended his overall streak to 351 consecutive games dating to 2007. ... The Bobcats finished 21-20 at home, a season after going 31-10. ... Hawks C Jason Collins (ankle) missed his fourth straight game.

THE FACTS: The Charlotte Bobcats will head into the offseason on a two-game winning streak thanks to a 96-95 victory over the reeling Atlanta Hawks. Gerald Henderson paced the Bobcats with 20 points while Josh Powell led the way for the Hawks off the bench with 16. Atlanta will enter the postseason on a six-game losing streak ahead of its first-round matchup with the Orlando Magic.

QUOTABLE: "I was hoping that it wouldn't end like this. It was one of my concerns after we locked up the fifth spot. I was hoping I could pull it out of our guys to continue to play hard and really compete. I was hoping our guys would play at a higher level, but they didn't respond to that. Now, it's time to flip the switch and I'm pretty confident that they will do that."

THE STAT: Minutes. Drew chose to rest his starters for a majority of the game. Only two of their starters saw more than 20 minutes of playing time with just Kirk Hinrich scoring in double figures. Charlotte on the other hand used all of its starters at least 29 minutes and had just one starter not reach double figures in scoring.

TURNING POINT: Bench play. The Bobcats bench stole the momentum form Atlanta midway through the fourth quarter. After the Hawks cut the lead to just four points, D.J. White salted the game away. The Charlotte forward started a 7-0 run with a dunk in transition and also ended it with a 17-foot jumper to put the Bobcats back ahead 85-74.

QUOTABLE II: "I just try to get better every day and in each game. I look at it as an opportunity to get better at my job. We didn't do what we wanted to as a team this year so we have a lot to work on as a team so we can make the playoffs next year."

HOT: Henderson. The Bobcats second-year guard finished the season with a 20-point, six-rebound, six-assist night. He closed out the year on a hot streak having scored in double figures in 22 of his final 28 games and averaging close to 15 points per game in that stretch compared to just 4.3 in his first 83 games in the NBA.

NOT: Hawks starting five. The Atlanta starters were just 10-for-26 from the floor and accounted for only 20 of the teams 85 points. Joe Johnson scored just two points on 1-for-6 shooting for his fourth consecutive game in which he scored below his season average.

BAD MOVE: Resting the starters. Drew has chosen to rest his starters at the regular season has wound down with disastrous results. The Hawks limp into the playoffs on a six-game losing streak with losses to Charlotte and Washington in two of their three final regular season games.

ROOKIE WATCH: Papa Sy was the lone rookie to see action Wednesday night. He played just nine minutes and was the only player for either team to not score a point.

NOTABLE: Kwame Brown has scored in double figures in six straight games after his 11-point performance Wednesday night. D.J. Augustin has scored in double figures in 21 of his last 26 games and is averaging 14.9 points during that stretch. Dante Cunningham finished the season scoring in double figures in eight of the final 11 games and averaging 11.9 points during that stretch. Powell and Damien Wilkens both scored in double figures for the fifth time this season. Hawks guard Jeff Teague has registered double digit totals in points in three of the last four games.
