Raptors-Bucks Preview

Though the Milwaukee Bucks won't make consecutive trips to the playoffs, they have a chance to sweep the season series from the Toronto Raptors for the first time in nine years.

The Bucks will need a fifth consecutive home victory over the Raptors to accomplish that Monday night.

After going 46-36 to make the playoffs for the first time in four seasons in 2009-10, Milwaukee (33-47) could not overcome various injuries to key players and a season's worth of poor shooting in 2010-11.

"It's been frustrating all year," said swingman John Salmons, who has averaged 13.9 points this season after scoring 19.9 per contest in 30 games with the Bucks in 2009-10.

Salmons, joined second-year guard Brandon Jennings, center Andrew Bogut, swingman Carlos Delfino and forward Drew Gooden as some of the Bucks' top players who missed at least nine games due to injury this season. That collective absence likely contributed to the club ranking last in the league in scoring (91.6 points per game) and field-goal percentage (43.0 percent).

Bogut will wind up missing the final four games with a sore right elbow.

Gooden, however, is healthy and averaging 13.7 points with 7.9 rebounds the last seven games. He recorded his first career triple-double with 15 points, 13 boards and 13 assists in a 108-101 win over Cleveland on Saturday.

"I think this gives (me) something to see what I can bring to the game, to this team, to help them win," Gooden said.

Despite their overall offensive struggles, the Bucks have averaged 99.3 points and shot 47.2 percent while winning two of three.

"We definitely want to continue to play hard," Salmons told the Bucks' official website after he scored 32 points Saturday. "These games don't mean anything as far as making it to the playoffs but we still have to have some pride and play hard."

Milwaukee has not lacked intensity averaging 104.0 points and shooting 50.2 percent in three wins over the Raptors (22-58) this season. Jennings scored 25 points and Gooden added 22 with 11 rebounds in a 104-98 win at Toronto on March 30.

The Bucks, who have not swept a season series from the Raptors since 2001-02, have won seven of nine overall versus Toronto. Milwaukee has averaged 107.3 points during a four-game home streak against the Raptors.

Toronto won for the second time in 11 games, 99-92 against New Jersey on Sunday. Jerryd Bayless scored 19 points as the Raptors shot 51.3 percent.

With the Raptors set to miss the playoffs for a third straight season, Bayless has seen more time in the final stretch. The second-year guard has averaged 23.2 points on 51.7 percent shooting the last six games.

Swingman DeMar DeRozan has averaged 24.3 points the last seven games. That included 20 against the Bucks last month.

After dressing just nine players Sunday, Toronto could again be without leading scorer Andrea Bargnani (right ankle), guards Jose Calderon (left hamstring) and Leandro Barbosa (left pinky), and forward Amir Johnson (left ankle).

Bucks beat Raptors 93-86; home finale for Redd?

MILWAUKEE (AP) If this was Michael Redd's last home game for the Milwaukee Bucks, at least he went out with a win.

Redd didn't play much in Milwaukee's 93-86 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Monday night, scoring two points on 1-for-6 shooting.

After knee injuries cost him most of the past two seasons, Redd has gone from being the face of the Bucks' franchise to being a bench player. His contract is up at the end of the season, and he hasn't spent much time thinking about what might be the end of his time in Milwaukee.

"I haven't," Redd said. "Before the game, people were mentioning it. I'm just focusing on being healthy and trying to win a ballgame tonight, so I wasn't really focusing on it too much. I know the connection here is special between myself, the city and the fans, so it's been an awesome 11 years."

With Redd potentially fading into the background, the Bucks turned to their new young star to salvage a win in their final home game of what has been a disappointing season.

Brandon Jennings broke free for three straight fast-break scores to give Milwaukee the lead in the fourth quarter, and the Bucks held on to beat the undermanned Raptors.

"We were able to get down and get a stretch of easy layups for a change instead of having the burden on our half-court offense to get shots," Bucks coach Scott Skiles said.

John Salmons scored 24 points and Jennings added 21. Drew Gooden had 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Jerryd Bayless scored 20 for Toronto in a matchup between two teams eliminated from playoff contention. The injury-riddled Raptors used only eight players - and it showed in the fourth quarter, when they committed six of their 20 turnovers.

"I think that's how the game went," Raptors coach Jay Triano said. "They wore us down in the second half."

The Raptors shot 23 free throws before halftime to the Bucks' 11, but struggled to get to the line in the second half.

"We didn't drive as much in the second half as I would have liked," Triano said. "Our guys were just worn down a little bit."

Bayless was unhappy with his six turnovers, including three in the fourth quarter.

"In the second half I was careless with the ball, I missed shots," Bayless said. "I played terrible."

Toronto finishes the season at home against Miami on Wednesday. The Bucks finish the season at Oklahoma City on Wednesday.

Redd, the Bucks' second-round pick in the 2000 NBA draft, is making approximately $18 million in the final year of a $91 million, six-year contract he signed in 2005. A productive scorer most of his Milwaukee career, Redd has missed most of the past two seasons because of two separate injuries to his left knee.

Redd has played sporadically off the bench since he returned to the court this year, and was on the bench to start Monday's game. The entire team was introduced before the final home game, and Redd received warm applause from the crowd when his name was called.

It wouldn't have taken long to introduce the entire Toronto squad. The Raptors brought only nine players to Milwaukee, then found out that forward Reggie Evans was unable to play because of a sore left index finger. Joey Dorsey started in his place.

Leandro Barbosa has a sore right pinky finger, Andrea Bargnani a sore right ankle, Jose Calderon a sore left hamstring, Amir Johnson a sore left ankle and Sonny Weems a sore right knee.

Still, Toronto controlled most of the game against a Milwaukee team that has played well on defense for most of the season but struggled to guard in recent games. Then the Raptors started turning the ball over, and the Bucks took advantage.

Trailing by two, the Bucks shot to an 81-77 lead with 5:31 left on three straight fast-break scores by Jennings, including an emphatic slam dunk.

Toronto later cut the lead to two with 1:33 left, but Gooden hit a layup and converted a three-point play to put the game out of reach.

NOTE: Toronto's James Johnson appeared to hurt his leg in the second quarter but returned to the game. ... Toronto's DeMar DeRozan took a shot to the head during a collision in the third quarter but returned. ... After an errant pass hit a fan sitting courtside, Bayless went over to make sure the fan was OK during a timeout.

Raptors-Bucks notebook

THE FACTS: John Salmons scored 24 points and Drew Gooden added 19 points and 11 rebounds as the Milwaukee Bucks overcame a sloppy first half for a 93-86 victory Monday night at the Bradley Center in their final home game of the season.

QUOTABLE: "I was going to go with a dribble handoff but they kept pressuring up on my guards, so it was kind of tight to do a DHO. I felt like if I could get to my sweet spot on that block to my left and shoot a jump hook, I feel like I can make that shot in my sleep."
-- Gooden on his basket with 1:15 left that stopped a Toronto run and made it 88-84, giving the Bucks all the points they'd end up needing.

THE STAT: Although the Raptors finished with a 50-45 edge on the boards, the Bucks posted a 17-11 advantage in the fourth quarter as they finally overcame the Raptors after a sloppy first half.

TURNING POINT: A 15-0 run took the Bucks from a 77-71 deficit to an 86-77 lead with 3:18 left. From there, the Raptors scored the next seven points to make it 86-84 with 1:33 left. Gooden then got the ball on the right wing and got himself to the right block, where he rose up and dropped in a perfect little jump hook to stop the Raptor rally. Just 28 seconds later Gooden cut down the lane and took a pass from Salmons for a 3-point play that made it 91-84 with 46.8 seconds.

QUOTABLE II: "It's an honor. It speaks to the relationship between me and (Bucks owner) Sen. (Herb) Kohl and the organization over the years. You don't see late second-round picks stick with a organization this long."

HOT: Salmons hit 9 of 14 shots to make him 23 of 32 over the last two games.

NOT: Toronto's Joey Dorsey made just 3 of 12 shots, a great majority of them from in close, but managed to get most of his misses back as he had 10 offensive rebounds and 20 overall.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Former Green Bay Packers running back Ahman Green was among the crowd, as was Fred Roberts, who played forward for the Bucks from 1988-93.

GOOD MOVE: When forward Reggie Evans was ruled out before the game with a finger injury, Raptors coach Jay Triano started Dorsey in his place. Dorsey became just the seventh Raptor ever to have 20 rebounds in a game.

NOTABLE: The Raptors missed their first six shots, then made 11 of their next 13. ... The Raptors scored 33 points in the first quarter but just 35 in the second half. ... Redd, a second-round pick in the 2000 draft, is the last player from that draft to still be with his original team. ... Point guard Jerryd Bayless led the Raptors with 20 points and five assists but also had six of Toronto's 19 turnovers...Toronto forward James Johnson played 38 minutes but did not collect a rebound. ... The Bucks had a 22-10 edge in fast-break points ...The Raptors had just eight healthy players dressed for the game...The Bucks swept the Raptors, 4-0, in the season series.
