76ers-Celtics Preview

The Boston Celtics could face the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round of the playoffs. Whether each team will have a key contributor available remains to be seen.

The Celtics have again lost Shaquille O'Neal, while Louis Williams won't be on the floor for the Sixers when they visit TD Garden on Tuesday night.

O'Neal returned Sunday after missing more than two months with a strained left Achilles', but he limped off in the second quarter with a strained right calf. O'Neal, who managed six points in just over five minutes of the 101-90 win over Detroit, could be shut down for the rest of the regular season.

With limited depth at center due to injuries to Jermaine O'Neal and Nenad Krstic, the Celtics (53-23) desperately need the 39-year-old's inside presence as they gear up for the playoffs.

"I don't know what to do, honestly," Rivers said when asked if O'Neal should sit out the remaining six games. "My inclination is not, because he needs to play."

Jermaine O'Neal has played limited minutes in three games after missing the previous 36 with a nagging knee injury.

"We have to have one of the O'Neals," Rivers said. "And then Krstic has to be healthy. If we have that, we have size."

Kevin Garnett stepped up Sunday and scored a team-high 23 points for the Celtics, who are in third place in the Eastern Conference, one-half game behind Miami and three back of Chicago.

Boston has won two of three meetings with Philadelphia this season, with those games decided by a combined eight points.

The 76ers won the most recent matchup 89-86 on March 11 to avoid a four-game losing streak in the series. Boston has taken 12 of the last 15 meetings.

While the Celtics won't have O'Neal, the Sixers (40-37) will be without Williams, their top reserve who is third on the team with 13.7 points per game.

The guard strained his right hamstring during a 93-87 overtime loss to Milwaukee on Saturday and did not return. The team said he will be out for the foreseeable future.

The 76ers are in sixth place in the East, 1 1/2 games ahead of seventh-place New York with five remaining.

Philadelphia evidently missed Williams as it blew a 12-point lead against the Bucks and failed to win a season high-tying fourth straight.

"I talked to our guys a little bit about it. I said, 'That's what playoff basketball is going to be about. They're going to know all of our plays,"' coach Doug Collins said. "I know we picked it up back up in the fourth quarter. It's a shame we couldn't find a basket late in the game. We just couldn't make one."

The Sixers have dropped four of their last five games at Boston.

Rondo helps Celtics past 76ers

BOSTON (AP) Rajon Rondo's miserable March is over.

The Celtics point guard had 16 points and 13 assists to lead Boston to a 99-82 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday night and help the defending conference champions reclaim the second-best playoff position in the East.

"He's getting himself ready," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "You can see what they're all doing, they're sharpening their tools. ... They know where they're at."

With the win, the Celtics and Heat were tied at 54-23 with four games left in the regular season - including one head-to-head matchup in Miami on Sunday. The Celtics would win the tiebreaker because they beat Miami in their first three meetings this season.

"We want all these games," said Kevin Garnett, who scored 14 points. "Playoffs is like the main course. This will definitely be an appetizer."

Reserve Evan Turner scored 21 - two points short of his career high - for the Sixers, who clinched a playoff berth on Friday but could still finish anywhere from fifth to seventh in the East. They ended the night in sixth, four games behind the Atlanta Hawks and one-half game ahead of the New York Knicks.

"When we play a team like this, I told our guys we want to keep growing every single game," Sixers coach Doug Collins said. "That's why coming down this stretch these games give us a blueprint on what we have to do to beat these teams."

Rondo started the season on a torrid passing pace, averaging 15 assists over Boston's first 10 games - including a season-high 24 in the third game of the year. He failed to reach 10 assists only 11 times heading into March, not counting injuries; he matched that in the past month alone - including eight games in a row.

From March 6 to March 27, when he sat out to rest a strained right pinky, Rondo also shot 34 percent from the field, averaged seven points and 7.4 assists, and the Celtics went 5-6.

But Rondo is back on track, reaching double digits in assists or rebounds in four straight games after failing to do so a dozen times in the 14 games before that.

"I wouldn't say I'm feeling 100 percent, but I'm doing OK," Rondo said. "Tonight was a good test for us. That might be a first-round (opponent) and we did a good job of making a little statement that it's going to be hard to beat us in a seven-game series."

Rondo added four rebounds, shot 6 for 14 from the floor and even made all four of his free throw attempts on Tuesday. Paul Pierce scored 18 points, Kevin Garnett had 14 and Ray Allen had 13 for Boston, which is 8-8 in the past month.

"Rondo is once again leading their team," Collins said. "When they play like that, it should make Doc smile because they're one of the best teams in the league.

Nenad Krstic scored eight points in 18 minutes after missing two games with a bruised right knee, and Jermaine O'Neal had nine points in 12 minutes as the Celtics try to find big men to fill in for Shaquille O'Neal. The 15-time All-Star returned on Sunday after missing 27 games but lasted just 5 minutes, 29 seconds before leaving the game with a strained right calf muscle.

The Celtics do not have a timetable for his return, Rivers said, and getting Krstic and O'Neal healthy would be crucial if they're going to have a chance to return to the NBA finals.

Philadelphia led 49-47 with just over a minute left in the half before the Celtics scored seven of the last eight points heading into the break. Boston then scored the first nine points of the third quarter to complete a 16-1 run and turn a two-point deficit into a 63-50 lead.

Notes: The Sixers signed PG Antonio Daniels from the Texas Legends of the NBA Development League to replace Lou Williams, who strained his right hamstring on Sunday. Daniels has played 12 NBA seasons for Vancouver, San Antonio, Portland, Seattle, Washington and most recently New Orleans in 2008-09. ... Angel Martinez, 21, of Worcester, hit a half-court shot at halftime to win $25,000. ... The Sixers missed their first nine shots in the third quarter. ... Jeff Green blocked Marreese Speights in the closing seconds, bringing the crowd to its feet.

THE FACTS: The Boston Celtics held the Philadelphia 76ers to just 32 points in the second half, enabling the hosts to pull away for a comfortable 99-82 victory. Rajon Rondo energized the C's in the potential Eastern Conference first-round preview with 16 points and 13 assists, while Paul Pierce had a team-high 18 points. Philadelphia kept the game tight in the opening 24 minutes, but could not recover after a nearly six-minute scoring drought to start the third quarter. Rookie Evan Turner proved to be the lone bright spot for the 76ers with a game-high 21 points in the setback.

THE STAT: Boston's stifling defense forced Philadelphia to shoot just 28.6 percent (12-for-42) from the field in the second half.

TURNING POINT: Andre Iguodala had a chance to cut the Sixers' deficit to seven points at the charity stripe with just four seconds remaining in the third quarter. Iguodala missed the freebie however, and Rondo took advantage, racing up the floor with the ball for a buzzer-beating floater as the period expired. The clutch shot pushed the Celtics' lead to 10 and the momentum carried over to the final frame for the victors.

QUOTABLE II: "We ran up against a team that played probably as well as they've played in a long time. When they play like that, it should make Doc [Rivers] smile because they're one of the best teams in the league."

HOT: Jeff Green -- Facing criticism from Rivers before the game for his lack of aggressiveness and rebounding, Boston's midseason addition stepped up his game in the fourth quarter of this contest. Green made all three of his baskets in the period, and grabbed five rebounds. The swingman finished with eight points and a team-high seven boards.

NOT: Spencer Hawes -- The former Sacramento center struggled all night against a revamped and relatively healthy Celtic front line, missing 11 of his first 12 shots from the field. Hawes finished 3-of-14 overall and scored just six points in the loss.

INSIDE THE ARENA: One lucky fan hit a half-court shot at halftime to take home a $25,000 dollar prize.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: By breaking out of a late-season slump, Rondo has returned to his aggressive roots as a dual threat with the basketball in his hands. After tonight's output, the point guard is averaging a double-double with 15.4 points and 10.8 assists in his past five games.

ROOKIE WATCH: With sixth man Lou Williams sidelined with a strained right hamstring, Turner found himself back in Collins' rotation for the first time in weeks. The second overall draft pick did not disappoint, carrying the 76ers' offense for the final three quarters on the offensive end. Turner tied a career high with nine field goals made, and also chipped in with five assists and three rebounds, making a strong case to stay in Philadelphia rotation in the weeks to come.

NOTABLE: Antonio Daniels made his debut for the 76ers after signing a 10-day contract earlier in the day. The 36-year-old point guard had two points in nine minutes of action. Nenad Krstic had a strong return to the floor after missing the past two games with a bone bruise in his right knee. The center posted eight points and six rebounds in 18 minutes. The game had 19 lead changes, all of them coming in the first half. Boston improved to 23-1 at home against Eastern Conference opponents. The loss, combined with a win by New York over Toronto, reduced the Sixers' lead for the No. 6 seed in the Eastern Conference to just a half-game over the Knicks. Boston pulled even with the idle Miami Heat for the No. 2 seed with the win. Jrue Holliday scored 11 points in the first quarter, but did not score for the remainder of the game, missing his final eight shots from the field. The Celtics led by as many as 21 points in the fourth quarter.
