Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy was frustrated after the Magic's sloppy play in an overtime win over the Milwaukee Bucks last month.

Almost three weeks after that meeting, Van Gundy is still venting following another lackluster effort by his team.

However, the Magic have a good opportunity to start building some momentum Tuesday night when they seek their 11th straight home win against the Bucks.

Orlando (48-29) has won two of three against Milwaukee (31-45) this season, but the latest win was hardly impressive. The Magic turned the ball over 19 times and struggled at the free throw line in a 93-89 overtime victory March 16.

"I'm happy to get out of here with a win," Van Gundy said. "We did about everything wrong we could do."

Van Gundy was even more irritated after a 102-98 loss at last-place Toronto on Sunday. The Magic, losers of three of four, were outscored 29-19 in the fourth quarter and were outrebounded 48-30 overall.

"We certainly didn't even try to turn it on tonight," Van Gundy said. "Our guys want to try to pick their spots. I'm not at all confident. I'm confident in what we're able to do when we want to play, but I'm not confident that our guys will come with an approach to really come out and play hard and play with great energy. I'm not confident in that at all."

Orlando has a four-game lead over Atlanta for the fourth seed in the East and homecourt advantage in the first round. However, Van Gundy said it could be a short stay in the postseason if his team's play doesn't improve. He's also frustrated that he hasn't been able to get star center Dwight Howard some rest down the stretch. Howard had 31 points and nine rebounds in 39 minutes Sunday.

"It's a little ridiculous that we can't even let Dwight get a drink of water, but that's the way it is," he said. "It's crazy; we should be able to take him out to get a drink of water."

Howard has also played longer than his season average in two games against the Bucks. He played 46 minutes in last month's game, finishing with 31 points and 21 rebounds, and he was on the floor 43 minutes in a 97-87 home win Jan. 5.

Howard missed the first meeting between the teams - a Magic loss on Dec. 4 - with a stomach virus. Orlando has won the last nine contests against Milwaukee when Howard has played.

The Magic have won 10 straight at home over the Bucks since Milwaukee's last win in 2004. The Bucks have averaged 89.1 points during the losing streak.

Milwaukee is trying hold onto slim playoff hopes, sitting 10th in the East and three games behind eighth-place Indiana. Milwaukee has played two fewer games than the Pacers, but so has Charlotte, which is a game in front of the Bucks.

The remaining schedule won't provide any help to Milwaukee, which has to visit Orlando and Miami on back-to-back nights before traveling to Detroit on Friday.

The Bucks rallied from a 12-point deficit to beat Philadelphia 93-87 in overtime on Saturday for their second win in three games.

"It's still about finishing strong," said Brandon Jennings, who scored nine of his 13 points in the extra period against the 76ers. "That's part of being a professional."

Jennings has averaged 25 points in two games against Orlando this season.

Bucks 72, Magic 78

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) Dwight Howard had 18 points and 17 rebounds, Jameer Nelson scored 17 and the Orlando Magic beat the Milwaukee Bucks 78-72 on Tuesday night.

Coupled with Atlanta's 97-90 loss to San Antonio, the Magic clinched the No. 4 seed for the Eastern Conference playoffs. Orlando won three of four in the season series to improve to 16-5 in its last 21 meetings against the Bucks.

Orlando shot just 38 percent, including a stretch of 19 straight misses from the 3-point line.

Milwaukee's dwindling playoff hopes took a big hit. Entering Tuesday, any combination of two Bucks losses or victories by idle Indiana eliminated them from postseason contention. Milwaukee could be officially eliminated Wednesday if it loses at Miami.

Drew Gooden scored 18 points for the Bucks, and Keyon Dooling finished with 10.

Nelson, who had logged 42 minutes in each of the Magic's previous two games, was able to get a little more rest Tuesday with backup point guards Gilbert Arenas and Chris Duhon both returning to the active list.

Arenas had missed two straight games with flulike symptoms and Duhon three consecutive games with a sprained ligament in his right thumb. Arenas first relieved Nelson in the opening quarter and played 16 minutes against the Bucks. Duhon entered for the first time in the second quarter and played 11 minutes while wearing a protective brace on his hand.

Orlando led by as many as 16 in the first half, but Jennings' running layup tied it at 61 with 9:23 remaining in the game. Milwaukee threatened to take the lead on several trips over the next three minutes, but struggled to get the go-ahead bucket to fall.

The Magic opened a 70-64 lead before Gooden converted two three-point plays to leave it tied again at 72. Nelson responded with a deep jumper that put Orlando in front again, Andrew Bogut had a turnover on the other end, and Hedo Turkoglu hit a jumper to make it 76-72 with just 47.6 seconds left.

Jennings missed a 3 on the Bucks' next trip and a rebound by the Magic helped seal it.

Magic coach Stan Van Gundy gave his team the day off Monday and also canceled its usual gameday shootaround. The rest seemed to help early as Orlando jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the opening five minutes and led 42-33 at the break.

As impressive as the opening spurt was, neither team was particularly impressive in the first half offensively.

Milwaukee shot just 32 percent from the floor with eight turnovers. Orlando shot 55 percent (11 for 20) in the first quarter, but just 2 for 14 in the second. The Magic had 11 turnovers of their own, but were able to keep the lead at the free-throw line, connecting on 14 of their 20 attempts.

The Bucks missed their first eight shots of the game, prompting Milwaukee coach Scott Skiles to call a timeout with 6:40 left. He benched his entire starting five the rest of the period and for the start of the second quarter.

Milwaukee didn't get its first basket until Gooden scored with 6:31 to play in the first via a goaltending call on Howard.

NOTES: Van Gundy was whistled for his ninth technical foul of the season with 2:48 remaining in the second quarter. It tied him with Portland's Nate McMillan for the league lead among coaches. ... Magic G J.J. Redick sat out his 13th straight game with a lower abdominal strain. Van Gundy said they expect to know more about his prognosis on Thursday or Friday.

THE FACTS: The Orlando Magic survived horrible shooting and 21 turnovers to clinch fourth place in the Eastern Conference with a 78-72 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks.

Dwight Howard had 18 points and 17 rebounds, and Jameer Nelson and Hedo Turkoglu hit big jumpers for Orlando after the Bucks had come back from an 18-2 deficit to tie it, 72-72, with 2:02 left.

Drew Gooden came off the bench for 18 points for the Bucks, whose fading playoff hopes took another blow. No Milwaukee starter scored in double figures.

QUOTABLE: "The game was ugly both ways, but we still won."

THE STAT: The Magic missed 19 straight 3-point shots after making their first two.

TURNING POINT: After the Bucks missed their first eight shots and fell behind, 14-0, coach Scott Skiles yanked all five starters with 6:40 left in the first quarter.

HOT: Drew Gooden and Keyon Dooling came off the Milwaukee bench to hit 10-of-16 shots.

NOT: Brandon Jennings shot 3-for-15 and with the Bucks still in the game, missed all six of his shots down the stretch. Not that he was the only one who missed shots.

QUOTABLE III: "We were inept most of the night. We didn't shoot well, we didn't handle the ball well, we didn't make free throws. It was, I'm sure, hard to watch; I know it was for me, and for our players even. It was a frustrating night, but they hung in there and got the win and at this point, that's all that matters."

GOOD MOVE: Replacing all five starters just 5:20 into the game got the Bucks' attention just when the big early lead started damaging the Magic's concentration.

BAD MOVE: Howard fouled Drew Gooden 30 feet away from the basket with one second left in the third quarter, giving the Bucks three free throws.

NOTABLE: The Magic's 21 turnovers tied a season high. They have done it five times . . . Orlando failed to make three 3-pointers in a game they won for the first time since March 30, 2007 . . . The Bucks have held 11 straight opponents under 100 points. "We're one of the better defensive teams in the league. The numbers bear that out. Our problem has been on the other end of the floor," Skiles said.
