The Indiana Pacers continue to cling to the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Milwaukee Bucks aren't too far behind and seem to be getting healthy at just the right time.

The Pacers will try to hand a potentially crushing blow to the Bucks' playoff hopes when the teams close out their season series Friday night in Indianapolis.

Indiana (34-42) defeated Detroit 111-101 on Wednesday night - its second win in a row and fourth in six games - to remain one game ahead of Charlotte and three in front of 10th-place Milwaukee (30-44) in the East.

A Pacers victory Friday would not only put the Bucks four games back in the standings, it would also pull Indiana to within three games of seventh-place New York.

"We really have an opportunity to knock Milwaukee out," forward Danny Granger said. "That will be one less team to worry about even though Charlotte's right behind us still."

"(Seventh place) is not out of reach yet. We just have to pray the Knicks keep losing. ... We have six games left now so we'll see where it goes."

Milwaukee took six straight from the Pacers, holding them to an average of 91.8 points, before falling 103-97 on Feb. 12 as Granger scored 30.

Bucks center Andrew Bogut, averaging 17.3 points and 11.3 rebounds in his last 15 meetings with Indiana, knows another loss could be devastating.

"This is probably do or die for us," Bogut said. "This game is everything for us and probably everything for them, too."

Milwaukee won 104-98 in Toronto on Wednesday night to avoid a third consecutive defeat as guard Brandon Jennings continued his impressive play with 25 points.

Forward Drew Gooden matched a season high with 22 points and also had 11 rebounds off the bench in his second game back since missing 32 with plantar fasciitis in his left foot.

"Drew is a big part of this team," said Jennings, averaging 25.3 points in his last four games - 9.2 more than his season mark. "He's a great rebounder and he's a great screen-and-pop shooter. When he's out there making shots, it opens up the offense a lot."

Former All-Star Michael Redd scored five points Wednesday in his second game of 2010-11. Redd missed the last 14 months recovering from a second major knee surgery.

"You can say it's similar to making a trade and having two guys come in, but we didn't trade anybody," Gooden said. "It's a plus for us to be healthy right now and contributing down the stretch."

The Pacers also got some help Wednesday, as swingman Mike Dunleavy saw his first action since breaking his thumb against Washington on Feb. 22. Dunleavy, who missed 20 games, scored nine points in 19 minutes.

Milwaukee, which ranks last in the league with 91.6 points per game, has averaged 89.7 in losing nine of 12 on the road. The Bucks, though, have won three straight at Conseco Fieldhouse - all by four points or less.

Indiana has taken nine of 12 when holding opponents to under 100 points.

Granger leads Pacers in 89-88 win over Bucks

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Danny Granger refuses to relax as he leads the Pacers toward their long-awaited playoff goal.

The forward scored 17 points as Indiana beat Milwaukee 89-88 on Friday night, solidifying its position while pushing the Bucks to the brink of elimination in the Eastern Conference race.

Granger has been the face of a franchise that has missed the playoffs the past four years. The Pacers currently are in the final playoff spot in the East, two games ahead of Charlotte and four ahead of Milwaukee with five to play. The Bobcats lost to Orlando 89-77 on Friday night, adding significance to Indiana's victory.

"That's a huge win for us, especially considering Charlotte lost," Granger said. "We're one step closer. We just need to keep winning, and that will take care of everything."

The Pacers thought they had gained control of the race when they won at Charlotte on March 23. Things quickly turned.

"Charlotte, the last time we thought we put them out, they won two or three in a row, we lost two in a row" Granger said. "So you never know what's going to happen."

The Bucks trailed the entire second half but could have won in the closing seconds, when Drew Gooden missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

"I was the last option, and it just called for me to pop back out if nobody was open," Gooden said. "So I got it. All I could do is fling it up there. I tried to get some contact on the arm and maybe get a call, but you saw the result. Just hit the back of the rim."

The Bucks were trying to get the ball to John Salmons.

"We'd like a better look than that," Bucks coach Scott Skiles said. "They did a nice job of defending. We weren't exactly supposed to pop out there and end up with that one. But it's the shot we got, and we just didn't make it."

Now, the Bucks are nearly out of chances to save their season. Skiles was disappointed that his starters were outplayed with so much at stake.

"We had to go to the bench, and those guys got us back in the game, but that shouldn't be necessary in a game like this," he said.

Roy Hibbert had 15 points and 11 rebounds and Brandon Rush added 12 points for the Pacers (35-42), who have won five of seven. Indiana held Milwaukee to 43 percent shooting.

"You learn a lot about your guys when you have a high-stakes game like tonight," Indiana interim coach Frank Vogel said. "I'm proud of our defensive effort."

Brandon Jennings had 20 points and seven rebounds for the Bucks (30-45), while Andrew Bogut added 16 points before fouling out.

The Pacers led by 14 points in the third quarter, but Milwaukee cut Indiana's lead to 87-86 on a jumper by Salmons with 1:29 remaining.

Hibbert dunked at the other end before Salmons struck again with a jumper from beyond the top of the key to trim Indiana's lead to 89-88 with 26.7 seconds to play. Indiana worked the clock on its next possession, but Darren Collison's floater was short.

"We got a great look and he missed it," Vogel said. "That happens sometimes."

Milwaukee rebounded and called timeout with 2.7 seconds left to set up Gooden's final shot.

Granger said the Pacers need to play better in the fourth quarter.

"Closing games has a lot to do with maturity and experience, which we don't have a lot of," he said. "We'll make some bonehead mistakes at the end of games, but we learn from them. Hopefully, it won't bite us in the playoffs."

Indiana rallied from eight points down in the first quarter.

Collison's floater in the lane with 2.2 seconds left in the first half gave Indiana a 46-39 advantage at the break. The Pacers shot 60 percent from the field in the second quarter while the Bucks made just 6 of 25 shots in the period.

Indiana opened the second half like a team trying to deliver a knockout. The Pacers used a 6-0 run, highlighted by a steal and layup by Collison, for a 52-39 lead that forced the Bucks to call a timeout. Indiana still led 69-60 at the end of the third quarter before Jennings rallied the Bucks with nine points in the fourth.

"They were really scrappy," Hibbert said. "They played with us until the end. We did what we had to do defensively to get this win."

NOTES: Indiana committed nine turnovers in the first quarter. ... The Women's Basketball Coaches Association high school All-America teams watched the game. They play Saturday at Conseco Fieldhouse as part of the women's Final Four weekend. ... Notre Dame star Ben Hansbrough attended the game. He's the brother of Pacers starter Tyler Hansbrough. ... Milwaukee's Luc Mbah A Moute got a technical foul with 5:12 left in the second quarter. It was his second in 227 career games.

THE FACTS: The Indiana Pacers took a big step toward securing the franchise's first playoff berth in five years with an 89-88 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks Friday in Conseco Fieldhouse. Indiana led by 14 late in the third quarter but the Bucks rallied, hitting 13-of-20 shots in the fourth quarter and twice cutting the lead to a single point but could not wrestle away the lead. Milwaukee had the final shot but could do no better than a harried 3-pointer from Drew Gooden that wasn't close at the buzzer. The victory reduced Indiana's magic number for clinching the eighth spot in the Eastern Conference to four and effectively eliminated the Bucks (30-45), who fell four games behind the Pacers (35-42), who own the tie-breaker. Danny Granger led Indiana with 17, while Brandon Jennings scored 20 for Milwaukee.

QUOTABLE: "You learn a lot about yourselves, your guys, your teams when you have high-stakes games like tonight was. We played some of the best defense tonight that we played all year. That shows what these guys are made of. Blood and guts, hustle, we were all over the place defensively."

THE STAT: Milwaukee shot 23-of-39 (.590) in the first and fourth quarters but just 11-of-41 (.268) in the second and third.

TURNING POINT: Indiana led 89-86 after Roy Hibbert's dunk with 1:06 remaining, but John Salmons cut it to one with a jumper with 26.7 seconds left. The Pacers ran an iso for Darren Collison, who drained most of the clock but missed a floater in the lane, giving the Bucks one last chance with 2.3 seconds left. The Pacers did a good job denying Salmons, the intended target of the inbounds play, and the ball wound in Gooden's hands 25 feet from the hoop and his hurried shot bounded off the backboard and the iron at the buzzer.

QUOTABLE II: "This game was a microcosm of our season, spending all year trying to catch the Indiana Pacers in the standings and trying to catch them in tonight's game and we fell one point short."

HOT: Collison continued his hot shooting and is now 22-of-29 (.759) from the field in the last three games. ... Brandon Rush scored 12 off the bench and has averaged 11.8 off the bench in the last four. ... Milwaukee extended its franchise record of games scoring less than 90 points to 35. The Bucks are 2-33 in those games. ... Hibbert had 15 points and 11 points for his 19th double-double of the season, adding four blocked shots.

NOT: Carlos Delfino missed his only four shots for the Bucks, all from beyond the arc. ... The Pacers were just 3-of-11 from the 3-point line.

NOTABLE: Milwaukee's Andrew Bogut spent much of the day in a local hospital getting intravenous fluids after coming down with a stomach ailment overnight, but started and played 33 minutes, scoring 16 points with six rebounds before fouling out ... Indiana has won three in a row, while Milwaukee has dropped three of four. ... After falling behind 26-15 early in the second quarter, Indiana outscored Milwaukee 37-13 over the next 12 minutes to take a lead it would not relinquish. ... The Pacers committed nine turnovers in the first quarter but just four more the rest of the night. ... Indiana's 89 points were its fewest in a victory this season.
