Bulls-Timberwolves Preview

While Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls are leading the Eastern Conference, their intensity admittedly hasn't been there early in the last two games.

After falling behind by double digits for a second straight game, the Bulls look to get off to a faster start Wednesday night when they visit the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Chicago (53-20), trying to hold off Miami and Boston for the East's top seed, had its four-game winning streak snapped with a 97-85 home loss to Philadelphia on Monday. The Bulls, who had won 12 of 13, were outscored 27-13 in the first quarter and trailed the entire game.

Rose scored 24 of his 31 points in the second half, during which the Bulls cut a 19-point deficit to four, but the MVP candidate had a career-high 10 turnovers and committed two in the final two minutes.

"We came out sluggish. This one is definitely on me," Rose said. "Just me taking care of the ball and missing shots that I normally hit. ... Just careless, some of them was me driving and kicking the ball off my foot."

It was the second straight game the Bulls fell behind early, having trailed Milwaukee by seven midway through the first quarter but rallying from 15 down in the second half to win 95-87.

Chicago is second in the league in scoring defense, allowing 92.1 points per game, but has given up a combined 101 first-half points in its last two.

"The last couple of games, the first half we haven't played defense," coach Tom Thibodeau said. "We have to take a look at how we approach the game, how we practice and make the corrections real fast. Things can change fast in this league."

Rose and the Bulls had no such first-half problems in their only matchup with the Timberwolves (17-57) this season. Chicago led 58-37 at halftime en route to a 113-82 victory Dec. 11. Rose had 21 points in 30 minutes, shooting 5 of 6 from 3-point range.

Minnesota has lost seven straight but has been competitive against playoff-bound opponents. The Timberwolves have dropped their last three by an average of 6.3 points while losing to Dallas, Oklahoma City and Boston.

Minnesota trailed 32-13 after the first quarter against the Celtics on Sunday but came back to take the lead in the fourth before losing 85-82.

"I feel like we showed a lot of character," said Michael Beasley, who had 28 points and 10 rebounds. "We could've just let them beat us by 60 points. But we fought back and gave ourselves a chance to win the last two minutes. Of course we wanted to win, but it didn't turn out that way. A lot of guys played well, and we learned a lot from this game."

It was the first time in eight games the Timberwolves limited a team to fewer than 100 points. They had been 5-0 when holding the opposition under 90.

Kevin Love missed his third straight game with a strained left groin, but said Tuesday he expects to return for this game.

Minnesota has lost three straight in this series after winning 16 of 20.

Rose, Bulls get back on track vs. Timberwolves

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Derrick Rose and Kevin Love have played against each other since their days in AAU ball, worked out together in a steamy Los Angeles gym over the summer, and became fast friends as they've emerged as the faces of their respective franchises.

Individually, they are on similar paths. In their third seasons, both have had career years, with Rose emerging as a front-runner for the MVP award in Chicago and Love leading the league in rebounding in Minnesota.

Their professional paths are getting further apart by the day, and Love knows it.

Rose had 23 points and 10 assists in three quarters and the Bulls blew out the Timberwolves 108-91 on Wednesday night.

Carlos Boozer had 24 points and 14 rebounds and the Bulls recorded 31 assists on 41 field goals to stay 2 1/2 games ahead of Boston and Miami in the race for the top seed in the Eastern Conference.

"They're all on the same page, everybody," Love said. "When they break from the huddle, everybody's in. You can tell everybody has the utmost respect for each other and they're all in it to win it. In that regard, I envy that. I salivate for that. I like that a lot."

Love had 16 points and nine rebounds, but was limited to 27 minutes in his first game back from a strained left groin. The Timberwolves (17-58) lost their eighth straight game and have sunk to the bottom of the West.

The Bulls, who were missing starting center Joakim Noah because of a sprained right ankle, bounced back in a big way after a humbling loss to Philadelphia.

Two nights after the 76ers snapped Chicago's 14-game home winning streak, the Bulls attacked the Wolves from the start, playing a beautifully unselfish brand of basketball that was on an entirely different level than the home team.

"I think we're getting better, almost every game," Rose said. "Last game of course we didn't do it, but tonight we came out and played aggressive, played with an edge."

Rose had 13 points and five assists in the first quarter - Wolves point guard Luke Ridnour had 11 points and two assists in the entire game - and Chicago had 17 assists on 22 baskets in the first half.

The ball movement created wide-open shot after wide-open shot, a cohesive unit dominating a group of individuals in every way, shape and form.

"That's a team right there," Wolves guard Wayne Ellington said. "Them guys play together, man. All the way around. They play together, communicate. They do it the right way. That's something we've got to work toward."

The Bulls shot 50 percent for the game, pulling away in the third quarter with a 3 by Rose and a drive-and-dish from Luol Deng to Boozer that gave them an 86-62 lead.

Ever the demanding coach, Tom Thibodeau stayed on his team to the end, even calling a timeout with a 20-point lead with six minutes to play when he saw a defensive breakdown. But, for the most part, he was pleased with the difference he saw in his team from the start.

"I thought our shootaround was intense, I thought it was serious," Thibodeau said. "I thought our locker room was serious, and I thought the start of our start of the game was serious. ... We established a defensive mindset, a defensive game plan, and I think that got us going."

Rose's blend of strength, quickness and pure speed has proven too much for the league to handle, and his selfless attitude has transformed the Bulls from a middling playoff team to a legitimate contender and the current No. 1 seed in the East.

"You look at what he's done with his team, it's tough to argue D-Rose isn't the MVP," Love said.

He is also exactly what the Timberwolves are missing. Love is a wonderful supporting player, but they need a leader, a superstar, a competitor like Rose if they are ever going to lift themselves from the Western Conference basement.

While Rose had the Bulls humming, with the ball moving, the defense squeezing and the jumpers falling, the Timberwolves wilted into a one-on-one mess.

They had just 12 assists for the game and too often settled for jumpers or wild drives to the basket.

"For whatever reason, it wasn't there tonight," Wolves coach Kurt Rambis said. "We didn't bring the effort and intensity and focus for the vast majority of the ballgame."

Notes: Technically, two of Love's 16 points weren't his. Bulls forward Taj Gibson knocked the ball into his own basket with just over eight minutes to play in the second quarter, and Love was credited as the nearest player to the ball. ... Veteran Kurt Thomas started for Noah and hit his first three jumpers. He finished with six points and eight rebounds. ... Timberwolves C Nikola Pekovic missed his second straight game with a hip injury.

THE FACTS: The Chicago Bulls, stung two nights earlier by Philadelphia, fulfilled their vow not to take the bottom-dwelling Minnesota Timberwolves lightly on Wednesday, leading from the first minute en route to a 108-91 rout in Target Center. Derrick Rose scored 23 points and added 10 assists, 13 and five of them coming in the first quarter as Chicago took a double-digit lead that the Wolves never dented. Carlos Boozer added 24 points and 14 rebounds for Chicago, which has won 15 of its last 19 games to take over the lead for the Eastern Conference's No. 1 seed. Kevin Love scored 16 points in his first game back from a groin injury, but Minnesota lost its eighth straight game.

QUOTABLE: "We played off D-Rose, then made the secondary passes, made plays from there. We're trying to be unselfish. We're getting there. In the long haul, we need to share the ball."

THE STAT: 6 -- Minnesota assists through the first three quarters, compared to Chicago's 26, a difference that illustrated each team's offensive success rate.

TURNING POINT: Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau, annoyed by Chicago's lackluster 13-point first quarter Monday against the Sixers, made a fast start his priority during the team's shootaround Wednesday morning. The Bulls, sufficiently chastened, came out focused from the opening tip, eclipsing those 13 points in five minutes, and finished the quarter with a tone-setting 30-19 lead.

QUOTABLE II: "It looks like it's a lot of fun playing like that."
-- Wolves forward Anthony Tolliver, on Chicago's up-tempo, unselfish play.

HOT: With Bulls fans in the Target Center crowd chanting "M-V-P, M-V-P" when he was at the free-throw line, Rose piled up 23 points and 10 assists without playing in the fourth quarter, his third double-double in the past five games. Even better, Rose followed up his 10-turnover game against Philadelphia with only one mistake vs. Minnesota.

NOT: Minnesota guard Jonny Flynn notched five assists without a turnover against the Bulls, but his shooting continues to spiral downward. Flynn missed six of his seven shots, bringing him to 12-for-46 in his last eight games, a 26.1 percent success rate.

GOOD MOVE: With Joakim Noah unable to play on a sprained right ankle, Bulls coach Thibodeau turned to little-used veteran Kurt Thomas to play center against the Wolves. Thomas' inside presence helped hold the NBA's top offensive rebounding team to just seven on the night, and he made three of his four shots besides.

BAD MOVE: Chicago had failed on three straight offensive possessions late in the third quarter when Kurt Rambis sent Anthony Randolph in for Love. Within 90 seconds of the move, Randolph had airballed a 20-foot jumper, missed a free throw and, worst of all, twice allowed Bulls big men to get behind him for dunks. The Bulls' lead ballooned from 18 to 24 points, and any chance at a rally was gone.

NOTABLE: Chicago moved 2 1/2 games ahead of idle Boston, and remained 2 1/2 ahead of Miami in the Eastern Conference. ... Rose eclipsed 20 points and 10 assists for the 13th time this season, which trails only Deron Williams (19 at the start of the night), Russell Westbrook (18) and Steve Nash (15). ... The loss was Minnesota's first at home against a Central Division team after four straight victories, and dropped the Wolves, who own the Western Conference's worst record, to 6-4 against the Central. ... Joakim Noah tested his ankle before the game, but was too sore to play. He hopes to return Friday in Detroit.
