Thunder-Grizzlies Preview

Zach Randolph didn't make the Western Conference All-Star team, but he's certainly played like one of the league's best power forwards over the past few months.

The Memphis Grizzlies have every reason to believe that will continue against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

On the heels of hitting a buzzer-beater to give the Grizzlies a stunning comeback win, Randolph looks to help Memphis capture the season series from a Thunder team he's dominated Monday night at FedEx Forum.

Seeking their first playoff berth since 2006, the Grizzlies (35-29) were 14-19 after a New Year's Day loss. They're in eighth place in the West now - just two games out of fifth - with Randolph leading the way.

An All-Star when he averaged 20.8 points in 2010, Randolph has averaged 22.3 in his last 32 games - more than every Western Conference forward except Kevin Durant, LaMarcus Aldridge and Blake Griffin.

That resurgence - he averaged 18.3 points prior to Christmas - wasn't enough to get him a spot in a second straight All-Star game, but Sunday he one-upped a forward who did make the team. After Dirk Nowitzki gave Dallas a one-point lead with 3.1 seconds left, Randolph hit a rainbow 17-footer with 0.3 seconds on the clock to lift Memphis to a 104-103 victory.

Randolph finished with 27 points, leading the Grizzlies back from 18 down to snap the Mavericks' eight-game winning streak.

"It's definitely higher than I normally shoot it, but I can hit a lot of shots like that," Randolph said after Memphis improved to 15-6 when he scores at least 23 points. "I felt comfortable when I released the shot."

There's no reason to think Randolph can't come up big again Monday as Memphis and Oklahoma City (39-22) meet for the final time this season. He's averaged 29.7 points in the first three meetings - easily his most against any opponent - and has scored 31 in both Grizzlies wins.

As good as Randolph has been, Memphis might not have any wins against the Northwest Division-leading Thunder without Tony Allen. The offseason pickup had 19 points in a 110-105 home win Jan. 4, then delivered a season-high 27 points while filling in for Rudy Gay in a 105-101 overtime road victory Feb. 8.

Yet it was his defense against Durant, who scored 31 points but took 25 shots in last month's matchup, that impressed Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks.

"The guy was all-pro all night on both ends of the floor," Brooks said of Allen. "Twenty-seven points and he made Kevin work for every shot. I thought he won the game for them."

Memphis may need Allen to step in front of Russell Westbrook if the Thunder's All-Star point guard plays like he did Sunday against Phoenix. As Durant struggled, scoring 18 points but shooting 3 of 14 from the field, Westbrook had 32 points and 11 assists to lead Oklahoma City past Phoenix 122-118 in overtime - its third straight victory.

James Harden matched his career high with 26 points off the bench.

"Everyone did a great job of picking me up and filling in for me in the point area, or the scoring area," Durant said. "It was a great win."

Brooks may have been impressed with Allen's defense against Durant last month, but the NBA's leading scorer hasn't had much trouble filling it up against Memphis. Durant has averaged 32.4 points - shooting 51.6 percent - in his last seven games against the Grizzlies.

The Thunder had a season-high 23 turnovers in last month's loss.

Conley, Allen lead Grizzlies past Thunder 107-101

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) The Memphis Grizzlies are showing more maturity - and resilience - when they face an opponent's fourth-quarter rally.

Mike Conley and Tony Allen each scored 20 points, and Marc Gasol added 18 as Memphis withstood a second-half push, defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder 107-101 on Monday night.

Despite the Thunder threatening Memphis' lead in the fourth quarter, Oklahoma City was unable to get a key basket to overtake the Grizzlies, who won Sunday night in Dallas on Zach Randolph's last-second shot.

"(It took) effort, grinds, a collective effort from the whole team," Allen said. "Guys are focused and locked in. Getting back-to-back wins against these two top teams, pretty much shows that we are very ambitious."

Randolph added 17 points for Memphis, including four free throws in the closing seconds, as the Grizzlies maintained their hold on the eighth playoff spot in the Western Conference.

The fourth-quarter resilience reflects a different team than previous years when the Grizzlies might have buckled under the pressure down the stretch. Some credit young players such as Conley, Gasol and Darrell Arthur with another year in the league. Others point to the additions of veterans Jason Williams, Allen and the pick up of Shane Battier from Houston at the trade deadline.

"It's definitely a much more mature team," reserve guard O.J. Mayo said. "You add vets like (Williams, Allen and Battier), and they've pretty much been to the battlefield at high levels as far playoffs and finals.

"It brings a different mentality to our team; a much more focused locker room and a much more mature locker room."

Russell Westbrook had 27 points and seven assists for Oklahoma City, which saw its three-game winning streak snapped. Kevin Durant finished with 23 points, while James Harden scored 16.

Oklahoma City was 6 of 12 from outside the arc after halftime, but never could overtake Memphis, which led by as many as 17 in the third quarter.

"We made some costly mistakes," Durant said. "We always seemed to have it within two or three (points), and we couldn't get over the hump."

Both teams shot 52 percent in the game, but Memphis benefited from 12 Oklahoma City turnovers, including three in the fourth quarter, as the Thunder kept threatening Memphis' lead. The closest the Thunder could get was 93-92 on Westbrook's three-point play with 4:18 left. Baskets by Randolph and then Sam Young created the buffer Memphis needed.

"We got down 17 because our defensive effort wasn't where it needed to be," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. "We gave them too many easy layups and points around the paint. We got back into it because we made some shots, but we still weren't playing the defense that it takes to win in this league."

The game was close through much of the first half with six ties and eight lead changes.

The Thunder never led by more than two points, while Memphis got it to 10 with under a minute to play in the half on Mayo's 3-pointer.

Mayo's layup off the Thunder's sixth turnover in the half gave Memphis a 58-46 lead entering the dressing room, the Grizzlies ending the half on a 15-5 rally.

Memphis continued to extend the lead through the first part of the third period, but Durant started heating up.

Two consecutive 3-pointers put a dent in Memphis' lead. Westbrook's 3-pointer with the shot-clock running down, then a layup pulled the deficit to single-digits at 75-67. By the time the quarter ended, Durant had scored nine points in the period, Oklahoma City closed the quarter on a 16-6 run, and Memphis' lead was cut to 79-73.

"We fought back," Durant said. "We shouldn't have dug ourselves the hole. There were some plays I think we'd love to have back."

The rally rolled into the fourth quarter, as the Thunder continued to be successful from outside the arc. After missing all six 3-pointers in the first half, the Thunder hit six of their first seven after the break.

"In the second half, they hurt us," Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said. "They started raining 3s. We tried to play zone, so we could stay big, but we just didn't execute in the zone."

That helped Oklahoma City pull close on several occasions. But Memphis was able to hold off the Thunder down the stretch.

"I think the difference is our poise under pressure," Conley said. "I think we've got guys now who understand how to win. Not turn the ball over down the stretch. Not take a bad shot down the stretch. You work the mismatches when you have it, and take the opportunities when you have it."

Notes: Harden reached double figures for the ninth straight game, all in reserve. ... The last 12 games in the series have been decided either by single digits or gone to overtime. ... The Thunder are 6-6 in the second game of back-to-backs. ... Memphis is 12-1 against opponents playing their second game of a back-to-back, including winning all 11 in such situations at the FedExForum.

THE FACTS: After watching a 17-point third quarter lead shrink to one point late in the fourth quarter, the Memphis Grizzlies dug in defensively, using a blocked shot by Shane Battier and a pair of steals to pull out a 107-101 win over Oklahoma City. The Grizzlies captured the season series against the Thunder, 3-1. Leading the way was the backcourt of Tony Allen (20 points, six rebounds) and Mike Conley (20 points, nine assists, zero turnovers).

QUOTABLE: "We made some costly mistakes. We always seemed to have it within two or three (points) and we couldn't get over that hump. But you have to give the Grizzlies credit. They always play us real tough. They're a tough-minded team and well-coached. They played hard every possession, so you have to give those guys credit."

THE STAT: The win over the Thunder now gives the Grizzlies a 9-6 record this season against the top four teams in the Western Conference (San Antonio, Dallas, LA. Lakers, and Oklahoma City. They have won the season series against both Dallas and the Thunder, while also owning a pair of wins against the Lakers.

TURNING POINT: Oklahoma City guard Russell Westbrook completed a three-point play with 4:18 left in the game, pulling the Thunder to within 93-92. The Grizzlies answered with a 7-2 spurt, aided by Battier's blocked shot of Westbrook and a steal and layup from Conley to build a 100-94 cushion that they used to close out the game.

HOT: Whatever the reason is, Tony Allen seems to like playing against the Thunder. Allen came into the game averaging 18.3 points, three steals, and 1.67 blocked shots in the team's first three meetings. Tonight was no different as he scored 20 points to go along with six boards and a steal, while also playing his usual suffocating defense.

NOT: The Grizzlies failed to get much production from backup point guards Jason Williams and Ishmael Smith. The two failed to score and played a combined eight minutes and 48 seconds. That forced Conley into just over 39 minutes, a night after playing the entire second half in the team's win at Dallas. In those two games, Conley has scored 37 points with 19 assists, while Williams and Smith have combined for no points and two assists.

QUOTABLE II: "It ain't all about me. It's about the Memphis Grizzlies. I was fortunate enough to have a good game today, but my teammates got me involved. I stuck within the offense and that's how it went."

NOTABLE: In a span of seven days, the Grizzlies have knocked off San Antonio, Dallas and Oklahoma City. They continue to cling to the eighth spot in the Western Conference, but now find themselves just a half-game behind No. 7 New Orleans, and one game back of No. 6 Portland...Even Grizzlies forward Zach Randolph is starting to buy into playing defense. Randolph had three steals against the Thunder, giving him 14 in his last four games. He has tied a career-high with his fourth straight game with multiple steals... A night after tying his season high with seven assists, guard O.J. Mayo came off the bench to tie a season-high with seven rebounds, which tied Battier for the team lead.... Russell Westbrook scored a game-high 27 points to go along with Durant's 23. Since the 2009-10 season, Westbrook and Durant have scored 20 or more points in the same game 58 times, the most in the NBA.
