Hornets-Raptors Preview

The New Orleans Hornets have struggled on the road against Western Conference opponents lately. It's been a different story when they've traveled to face teams from the East.

The Hornets look to get off to a positive start to their five-game trip when they face the lowly Toronto Raptors on Tuesday night.

New Orleans (35-26), battling for the fifth spot in the West, has dropped five of its last six road games against conference opponents. The Hornets, though, have gone 5-1 in their last six away from home against East foes and are 17-7 versus teams from that conference overall.

New Orleans begins this trip - its longest remaining road stretch of the season - after falling 91-89 to Houston on Sunday. Playing their first game since Jan. 30 with Emeka Okafor and David West both in the lineup, the Hornets managed 34 second-half points after leading by 16 in the third quarter.

Okafor was sidelined the first 10 games this month with a strained left hip, while West missed a 95-81 win at Minnesota on Friday due to a death in his family.

"Thirty-four second-half points is nonsense," coach Monty Williams said. "We didn't run our offensive sets hard. We walked the ball up and looked like an old team."

The Hornets lead the West in scoring defense at 92.6 points per game, but they've scored 100 points once in 12 contests this month.

The struggles of All-Star point guard Chris Paul haven't helped. He's scored 12.5 points per game - 3.6 fewer than his season average - over the last eight contests while shooting 34.4 percent from the field.

Paul, who's shooting 47.0 percent on the season, went 2 of 12 and matched a season low with six points Sunday.

"I couldn't make a shot," he said. "I've got to do my part."

Despite missing all but one of his eight shots and scoring six points, Paul did his part in an 85-81 home win over Toronto on Jan. 17. He recorded 11 assists to help New Orleans overcome a 12-point second-half deficit and avoid a third straight loss in the series.

The Raptors (16-44) gave up another lead - this time a 19-point first-quarter edge - in a 114-96 loss to Dallas on Sunday. Without leading scorer Andrea Bargnani (flu-like symptoms), Toronto was outscored by 25 in the final 24 minutes.

The Raptors have lost 20 of 23.

"They were just picking us apart," said point guard Jose Calderon, who finished with 15 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. "... We stopped them in the first half but in the second we couldn't stop it."

Calderon went scoreless Jan. 17 but had 13 assists and five boards.

If Bargnani can't play Tuesday, the Raptors will need guard DeMar DeRozan to continue his hot streak. DeRozan is averaging 18.9 points and 51.5 percent shooting in 11 games this month, and he scored a team-best 23 in the last matchup with the Hornets.

The Raptors won 98-92 on Dec. 20, 2009, in the teams' last meeting in Toronto.

New Orleans will try to sweep the season series for the second time in three years.

Calderon scores 22, Raptors beat Hornets 96-90

TORONTO (AP) Jose Calderon was looking for redemption. He got it, and then some.

Calderon had a season-high 22 points and 16 assists, DeMar DeRozan scored 17 points and the Toronto Raptors beat the New Orleans Hornets 96-90 Tuesday night for just their fourth win in 24 games.

Held scoreless in Toronto's 85-81 loss at New Orleans on Jan. 17, Calderon came out fired up for the return encounter.

"It was kind of like I owed this team a little bit," he said. "I played really bad down there. They kept me to no points. I wanted to be aggressive from the beginning."

Hornets coach Monty Williams was impressed with Calderon's 12th double-double of the season.

"He was exceptional," Williams said. "He made play after play after play against us. He's not just a veteran guard, he's way above average. He makes great decisions, can shoot the ball and he just made winning plays tonight."

Calderon had not scored more than 20 points since a 21-point performance at Washington on Jan. 15, a span of 20 games. His scoreless effort against the Hornets came in Toronto's next game.

DeRozan said Calderon was "amazing."

"He knew where to find everybody," DeRozan said. "He was knocking down shots and that's what we need from him."

Returning to the lineup after missing Sunday's loss to Dallas with flulike symptoms, Andrea Bargnani scored 14 points for Toronto, which also got 14 from Sonny Weems and 13 from James Johnson.

Amir Johnson had eight points, 10 rebounds and matched a career high with seven blocks for the Raptors, who had lost two straight.

David West had 19 points and 10 rebounds and former Raptor Jarrett Jack scored 17, but the Hornets lost for the ninth time in 12 games.

Carl Landry had 17 points, Marco Belinelli 13 and Trevor Ariza 10 for New Orleans.

New Orleans outscored Toronto by nine points in the second half, but it wasn't enough to undo a 15-point halftime deficit.

"We waited too late to play," Williams said. "The attitude starting the game and not having that sense of urgency, it hurt us tonight."

There's little time to dwell on the defeat: New Orleans visits the Knicks at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday.

"We have to flush the toilet on this one and get ready," Williams said.

It was another difficult night for Hornets point guard Chris Paul, who made just three of 10 shots and finished with seven points, five assists and four rebounds.

Paul went 2 of 12 and matched a season low with six points in Sunday's loss to Houston. He has not shot better than 50 percent in his past 10 games, and remains at a loss to explain his recent funk.

"I don't know, I don't know," Paul said. "I'm getting a lot of shots. A lot of shots are right there. Last game, I missed everything right there around the rim, tonight it was just off. I think I've got to find a rhythm or something like that, find a way to get some easy baskets."

Trailing by 10 points to start the fourth, the Hornets opened the quarter on an 11-4 run, making five of their first six shots. Toronto called time after 3-pointer by Belinelli cut their lead to 76-73 with 8:54 remaining.

Bargnani stopped the run with a jumper, and a 3 by Calderon gave Toronto an 84-76 lead with 7:11 left.

Toronto led 94-87 on a thunderous dunk by Amir Johnson with 1:29 left, but a three-point play by Landry made it 94-90 with 47 seconds remaining. Calderon capped it with a pair of free throws.

Calderon had eight points and six assists in the first quarter as the Raptors built a 27-20 lead.

The Hornets battled back to tie it at 37-all on a jumper by Landry with 6:04 left in the half. But the Raptors made their next six shots and New Orleans missed four of five as Toronto responded with a 14-2 run over the next four minutes. Weems scored 10 points in the second and DeRozan added eight, giving the Raptors a 57-42 lead at the half.

James Johnson scored nine points in the third and Toronto maintained its 15-point edge until the final minute of the quarter, when a pair of free throws from Jack and a 3-pointer by Belinelli trimmed the Raptors lead to 10, 72-62, heading into the fourth.

NOTES: Calderon's career high in assists in 19, set twice previously. He had 19 against Minnesota on Feb. 4. ... The Raptors were scheduled to fly to London following the game. They'll face the New Jersey Nets in the English capital on Friday and Saturday, the first regular-season games played in Europe. ... This was the first of five road games in seven days for the Hornets as they get away from New Orleans during the height of Mardi Gras season.

THE FACTS: The Toronto Raptors took care of business at home by handling the New Orleans Hornets 96-90 on Tuesday night. It was Toronto's last game before heading to London to take on the New Jersey Nets in the NBA's first regular-season games that will be played in Europe. Coming into the game there were concerns that the Raptors would not be focused on the game, but they quashed those concerns by coming up with a solid performance, led by the stellar play of Jose Calderon. Calderon finished with a season-high 22 points to go with 16 assists and seven rebounds in the victory.

QUOTABLE: "We have to flush the toilet on this one and get ready for tomorrow."

THE STAT: Amir Johnson tied his career-high with seven blocked shots. The Raptors as a team recorded 11 swats, compared to just three for the Hornets.

TURNING POINT: With 1:29 seconds remaining, Calderon recorded his 16th assist of the night, feeding Amir Johnson for a thunderous slam that put the Raptors ahead by seven. On the next possession, Johnson hustled back to defend under the hoop and first blocked an attempt by Emeka Okafor, then the second attempt by David West. The play kept the Raptors up seven with less than a minute to play and was indicative of the energy that Johnson played with throughout the game.

HOT: After reaching double figures for the first time in his last five games against the Mavericks on Sunday, Calderon had his best performance of the season with a season-high 22 points and game-high 16 assists. Calderon also shot 7-for-10 from the floor, including 3-for-4 from deep and 5-for-5 from the free throw line as he outplayed All-Star guard Chris Paul.

NOT: Another night of struggling from the floor for Paul. Paul has shot just 36 percent over his last five games and he wasn't any better against the Raptors, finishing with seven points on 3-for-10 shooting. Paul also was well below his 9.6 assist per game average, finishing with just five dimes against the Raptors.

NOTABLE: Former Raptor Jarrett Jack finished with 17 points off the bench for the Hornets. ... West scored a team-high 19 points for the Hornets. He added 10 rebounds and four assists. ... Amir Johnson had eight points and 10 rebounds to go with his seven blocked shots. ... Calderon's double-double was his 12th of the season.
