The Dallas Mavericks are rolling - even on the road. Their upcoming schedule may just keep things that way.

The Mavericks look for a sixth consecutive victory by re-establishing their dominance of the lowly Toronto Raptors on Sunday night.

Dallas (42-16) owns the second-best record in the Western Conference. However, the team is still six games behind league-leading San Antonio in the Southwest Division and the conference.

The Mavericks, though, are doing their best to gain ground in those races, winning 15 of 16 including five in a row in which they've averaged 111.4 points.

They're also on an 8-1 run on the road after winning 105-99 over Washington on Saturday. Dallas overcame a scare as it nearly squandered a nine-point lead with four minutes remaining in the opener of a three-game trip.

"Obviously we were disappointed in the way we finished that ballgame, but hey, we got out of here with a win," said guard Jason Terry, who had 25 points. "This is a stretch where we have games where, let's be blunt, we should win."

Four of Dallas' next five opponents currently have records at or below .500, and two of those contests are against last-place clubs.

This first is Toronto (16-43), which is at the bottom of the Atlantic Division while dropping 19 of its last 22.

The Mavericks, however, haven't fared well against the Raptors, losing the last two meetings after an 11-1 stretch. They fell 84-76 at home on Dec. 28, and in the last visit to the Air Canada Centre on Jan. 17, 2010, losing 110-88.

Dirk Nowitzki missed the most recent matchup with a knee injury, but he's averaging 26.4 points and 9.1 rebounds over the past eight games at Toronto with Dallas winning five.

Continued production from Tyson Chandler could also re-establish the Mavs' success in this series. The center made 10 of 14 shots for a season-high 23 points while pulling down 13 rebounds Saturday. His scoring output was two points shy of the total over the previous three games.

"I really wanted to get involved, because coming after the All-Star break, I know it's the stretch now where we've really got to get focused and make our playoff push," said Chandler, who was limited to three points and six boards against the Raptors in December.

Toronto turned in a listless effort Friday, falling 110-92 to Phoenix after holding its only lead when it made the first basket of the game. Just 1:58 later, the Raptors were down 11-2 and never came close to recovering.

"They jumped on us early and for whatever reason we were a step slow tonight," coach Jay Triano said. "We were slow reacting, we were slow going to the ball on the glass and they take advantage of that."

While the Raptors may be on their way to a third consecutive season out of the playoffs, Andrea Bargnani is providing one of the few bright spots.

The top overall pick in 2006 made 12 of 15 shots for 26 points against the Suns and is averaging 27.1 over the last nine games. He missed the last meeting with Dallas due to a strained left calf, but has averaged just 11.3 points during the past four home matchups.

Nowitzki scores 31, Mavericks beat Raptors 114-96

TORONTO (AP) After Dirk Nowitzki and the Mavericks got off to an ugly start, the Dallas bench provided a beautiful finish.

Nowitzki had 31 points and 13 rebounds, Shawn Marion scored 20 points and the Mavericks won their sixth straight game, erasing a 19-point deficit to beat the Toronto Raptors 114-96 on Sunday.

"That was ugly early," Nowitzki said. "We didn't really get any stops.

"I thought our bench really saved us," Nowitzki added. "Some nights your starting five just don't have it for whatever reason, fatigue, rhythm or whatever. Our bench was phenomenal."

Nowitzki was the only Dallas starter to score in double figures, with Tyson Chandler, Jason Kidd and Peja Stojakovic all showing the effects of playing more than 30 minutes in Saturday's victory at Washington.

Jason Terry scored 19 points as the Mavericks got 64 points from their reserves to win for the 16th time in 17 games, including nine of 10 on the road.

"This might be the deepest team I've ever played on," Kidd said. "You've got 12 or 13 guys that can start."

Dallas came in having lost two straight against the Raptors, but won for the 12th in 15 meetings.

Ian Mahinmi scored 13 points, and Jose Barea had 12 points and nine assists for Dallas.

Amir Johnson scored 21 points and DeMar DeRozan had 19 for Toronto, which has lost seven of 10 and 20 of 23. Jose Calderon added 15 points, eight rebounds and eight assists.

"They were just picking us apart," Calderon said. "They were just finding the open guy and that's what the good teams do. We stopped them in the first half but in the second we couldn't stop it."

Toronto was without leading scorer Andrea Bargnani (flulike symptoms), while Joey Dorsey (back spasms) missed his third straight game. Ed Davis started in Bargnani's place. The Raptors are 1-5 when Bargnani does not play.

Toronto led by as many as 19 in the first quarter but was unable to maintain that early edge, getting outscored 64-39 in the second half.

"If you come out and aren't ready to play at a high level you're going to get your face smashed in, and that's what happened to us early," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. "We took the hit and fought back. Some nights, that's how you've got to win."

Dallas led 75-72 to begin the fourth before blowing the game open with a 12-2 run, including five points each from Nowitzki and Terry.

Toronto made 10 of its first 11 shots and opened a 22-3 lead midway through the opening quarter, while Dallas missed 11 of its first 13 attempts.

"We didn't play any defense for the first five minutes," Kidd said.

Carlisle went to the bench early, bringing in Marion and Terry, and the Mavericks soon closed the gap. A buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Terry trimmed the deficit to 30-24 after one.

Nowitzki scored 16 points in the second but the Mavericks couldn't get any closer, and Toronto took a 57-50 lead into the half.

Dallas opened the third with a 15-4 run, and a slam dunk by Marion with 6:42 left in the quarter put them ahead 62-61, their first lead since scoring the game's opening basket. Marion scored 10 points in the third and the Mavericks never trailed again.

"(Marion) had a tremendous all-around third quarter for us," Carlisle said. "I thought that energized our team and it got us the lead."

NOTES: The 18-point margin of victory was the second biggest of the season for Dallas, second only to a 19-point win over Utah on Feb 23. ... Nowitzki's double-double was his 10th of the season, and he topped 30 points for the ninth time. ... Raptors forward Reggie Evans, out since Nov. 26 with a broken bone in his right foot, took part in his first full practice Saturday but is not yet ready to return. ... Dallas starters scored just five points in the first quarter. ... Toronto's James Johnson had seven assists, a career high.

THE FACTS: On Sunday afternoon at the Air Canada Centre, the Dallas Mavericks came back from an early 19-point deficit to defeat the Toronto Raptors, 114-96. They were led by Dirk Nowitzki's 31 points and 13 rebounds, but it was the play of their bench that saved them as they had four reserves reach double figures in the game. The Raptors were without Andrea Bargnani who was out with flu-like symptoms. The Mavs victory avenged a loss to the Raptors in Dallas earlier this season.

QUOTABLE: "Well, we're definitely one of the oldest teams in the league...We've basically seen it all in this league. Kidd is like 40 years old, almost. We have a bunch of veterans who have basically seen everything in this league and it was early. That's a good thing. You don't want to be down 15, 20 in the third, fourth quarter, but it was very early and our bench came through for us and they won us the game."

THE STAT: The reserves for Dallas were incredible in the victory over the Raptors. While Nowitzki scored 31 points in the game, the rest of the starters struggled, shooting an ugly 7-for-24 in the game. The bench came through in a big way the Mavs, finishing with 64 points. In comparison, Toronto's reserves finished with 25 points for the game. Shawn Marion finished with 20 points off of the bench while Jason Terry added 19, Ian Mahinmi scored 13 and Jose Barea added 12 points and nine assists.

TURNING POINT: Although the Raptors jumped out to a quick 22-3 lead in the first quarter, the Mavericks had trimmed the deficit down to seven at the break and then three at the end of the third after holding Toronto to just 15 points in the quarter. To open the fourth, the Mavs reeled off a 20-6 run that blew the game open and put them ahead by 17 points. After coming back from that initial deficit, the Mavericks outscored Toronto 111-74 over the remaining three and a half quarters.

QUOTABLE II: "This isn't about speeches. When you get to the end of February in an NBA season, these guys know where it's at. they're experienced enough and veteran enough to know that if you come out and aren't ready to play at a high level you're going to get your face smashed in and that's what happened to us early. We took the hit and we fought back."

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: In his third game for the Raptors, James Johnson showed a little bit of everything. Finishing with eight points, seven rebounds, a career-high seven assists, two steals and two blocked shots, fantasy owners might want to keep an eye on Johnson's production in the near future. Buried on the bench in Chicago, Johnson is in the starting rotation in Toronto and appears to be making the most of his minutes.

ROOKIE WATCH: Ed Davis started in place of Andrea Bargnani for the Raptors. He logged 37 minutes before fouling out in the fourth quarter and finished with eight points and five rebounds. He also added three assists and three blocked shots.

NOTABLE: The 18-point margin of victory is the second largest for the Mavericks this season. With the loss, the Raptors fall to 1-6 on the season without Bargnani. Nowitzki picked up his 10th double-double of the season. Marion recorded his sixth 20-point game of the season coming off of the bench for Dallas. Amir Johnson scored 21 points 10-for-13 field goals for the Raptors in the loss.
