The limited success for the Washington Wizards this season has come on their home court. That may not matter with the NBA's hottest team visiting the Verizon Center.

The Dallas Mavericks look for their fifth straight win overall and eighth in nine games on the road Saturday night when they face the Wizards for the final time this season.

Surging Dallas (41-16) has won 14 of 15 after a 118-99 victory Wednesday against Utah. Dirk Nowitzki led seven players in double figures with 23 points, but he's been sporadic since missing nine games from Dec. 28-Jan. 14 with a sprained right knee. He averaged 24.1 points before the injury and 20.5 in 19 games since returning.

Nowitzki got some help against the Jazz, as Peja Stojakovic scored 18 points and Shawn Marion added 16 off the bench. Jason Kidd had 12 assists.

The Mavericks have had at least five double-figure scorers in 14 straight games.

"We were really making shots and sharing the ball," Nowitzki said. "We had (seven) guys in double figures again, and that's how we've been winning lately - sharing the ball, passing the ball, making shots."

Stojakovic is averaging 15.5 points and shooting 54.5 percent (12 for 22) from 3-point range over his last four games.

"Peja's one of the top five or six shooters all-time," coach Rick Carlisle said. "If we can get him looks, there's going to be a great chance he'll knock them down."

Nowitzki scored 24 points Jan. 31 in a 102-92 win against Washington in the most recent meeting, part of the Wizards' latest dismal stretch in which they've lost 13 of 15.

Washington (15-42) dropped its fourth straight Friday, 121-113 at Miami, falling to 1-28 on the road. However, the Wizards hung tough with one of the league's best teams and trailed only 63-61 at halftime.

Washington tied the game in the third quarter, but Nick Young twisted his ankle and had to leave to get re-taped. Young still finished with 38 points on 12 of 19 shooting, but the Heat pulled away with the Wizards' leading scorer out nearly five minutes.

John Wall scored 24 points and added 12 assists, while JaVale McGee had 18 points and 17 rebounds.

"If we fight like this the rest of the season, we are going to win some games," Wall said.

Despite a respectable 14-14 home record, the Wizards have lost two straight and five of six at the Verizon Center and are ahead of just Cleveland in the East. They've struggled on the defensive end, allowing 111.7 points over their last six games.

Newly acquired Mike Bibby made his debut with Washington on Friday, going scoreless in nine minutes. The veteran guard, acquired Wednesday from Atlanta in a five-player trade involving guard Kirk Hinrich, was brought in to help mentor Wall as the Wizards hope to build for the future during a lost season.

Wall had 17 points and 10 assists in the first meeting with the Mavericks, while Young and Rashard Lewis added 18 points each.

Dallas has won four of the last five meetings, including two straight in Washington.

Terry helps Mavericks beat lowly Wizards 105-99

WASHINGTON (AP) The Dallas Mavericks thought it was business as usual. Up nine against the sad-sack Washington Wizards with four minutes to play, it was time to think about Sunday night's game in Toronto.

Not so fast.

Jason Terry scored 25 points, Tyson Chandler had a season-high 23 and 13 rebounds and the Mavericks needed a late surge to beat Washington 105-99 on Saturday night for their fifth consecutive victory.

The Wizards, who have lost five straight and 15 of 16, tied it at 97 on Jordan Crawford's jumper with 1:36 left. But Chandler scored on a tip and Dirk Nowitzki and Terry each hit two free throws to help Dallas regain control.

"You're up nine in the fourth early - that's a situation where you kind of want to go up 15, ice your knees and get on the bus. It didn't happen, but at the end of the day we want wins," Terry said.

Nowitzki added 21 points for Dallas, who have won 15 of 16 overall. Dallas improved to 8-1 in its last nine road games in the opener of a three-game trip.

"Obviously we were disappointed in the way we finished that ballgame, but hey, we got out of here with a win," Terry said. "This is a stretch where we have games where, let's be blunt, we should win."

John Wall had 24 points for Washington, Nick Young scored 14 and Rashard Lewis finished with 13, but it was Wall's missed free throws that cost the Wizards a chance for a surprising victory.

The Mavericks led 95-86 with four minutes left, but Wall responded with three straight layups. He scored and was fouled by Jason Kidd on successive plays, but both times missed the free throws.

"We didn't do a good job slowing the game down there when we had some leads," Nowitzki said. "We just kept on chucking, missed a couple shots, put them in transition and they were right back in it."

The Wizards missed 10 of their 16 foul shots, and whenever the game could have been theirs - suddenly it wasn't.

"We shoot free throws - we win the game," Washington coach Flip Saunders said.

Shawn Marion had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Mavericks, who improved to 42-16, second in the Western Conference to San Antonio. Kidd, who turns 38 next month, had 14 assists - 11 in the first half.

The Mavericks were a little rusty, playing in just their second game in nine days due to the All-Star break. Chandler had three dunks in an 11-0 run that got Dallas going and gave the Mavericks a 57-44 lead with 28.5 seconds left in the first half.

"I really wanted to get involved, because coming after the All-Star break, I know it's the stretch now where we've really got to get focused and make our playoff push," Chandler said.

Wall connected on a 34-footer to cut it to 59-49 at the break, and the Wizards scored the first nine points of the second half. But Dallas quickly regained a 10-point lead.

It was the first time that Washington's Josh Howard faced Dallas since he and three others, who are no longer with the team, were traded for Caron Butler, Brendan Haywood and DeShawn Stevenson on Feb. 13, 2010. It also was the first home game for Mike Bibby, Maurice Evans and Crawford, acquired from Atlanta on Wednesday.

Howard, who had nine points in 29 minutes, felt soreness in his surgically repaired left knee, Saunders said.

NOTES: Haywood had four points in 14 minutes. Stevenson did not score in two minutes. ... Washington has turned over its roster so drastically since the trade that Stevenson and Haywood played with just three of the 15 current Wizards: G Young, C JaVale McGee and F Andray Blatche. ... Blatche (sprained right hip) and F Al Thornton (sprained right hip) missed their second straight games. ... Butler, who made the trip, was exercising his injured right patella tendon on a bicycle in the locker room. ... Evans was called for a flagrant foul on Marion late in the third quarter.

THE FACTS: Jason Terry had 25 points, Tyson Chandler had a season-high 23 and 13 rebounds and Dirk Nowitzki added 21 to key the Dallas Mavericks' 105-99 win over the Washington Wizards on Saturday night.

It was the fifth straight win and the 15th in the last 16 for Dallas, which has the second best record in the Western Conference, trailing only San Antonio.

Chandler's tip-in with 1:17 left broke a 97-all tie and Terry and Nowitzki had two free throws to give the Mavericks a 103-97 lead with 37.7 seconds left.

John Wall led Washington with 24, but he missed two free throws on possible 3-point plays that could have given the Wizards the lead. Washington made just six of 16 free throws.

THE STAT: Washington missing 10 of 16 free throws. "We shoot free throws, we win the game," Wizards coach Flip Saunders said.

TURNING POINT: Chandler's tip-in with 1:17 to play. It's hard to believe that Chandler's has never scored more than 27 points in any game in his laudable nine-year career. "I wanted to come out tonight and make a statement," Chandler said. "I really wanted to get involved, because coming after the All-Star break, I know it's the stretch now here we've really got to get focused and make our playoff push," Chandler said.

QUOTABLE II: "I thought Jason Kidd had some key stops. For him to be 37 -- I believe that's his age-and still running up and down the court with their young fellas-man. That young dude on the other side, who may be one of the top three, two fastest guys in the league, that's impressive."
--Chandler on Kidd, who had 14 assists, matching up with Wall.

HOT: Chandler hit 10 of 14 from the field -- six of them dunks.

NOT: The Wizards from the free throw line -- missing all six in the fourth quarter.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Chandler may be a late-blooming offensive threat. With Nowitzki, Terry and Kidd all well over 30, Chandler could start becoming a go-to-guy.

GOOD MOVE: The Mavericks looking for Chandler, who easily overpowered JaVale McGee.

BAD MOVE: The Wizards repeatedly bricking free throw after free throw in the fourth quarter. They obviously need some extra practice.

ROOKIE WATCH: The Wizards have four rookies on their roster, and all played. Besides Wall's 24, Jordan Crawford had 10 in his first game since being traded from Atlanta, Trevor Booker had eight, but missed five of seven free throws. Kevin Seraphin also had eight. Wall shot a career-high 26 times -- seven more than his previous high.

The Mavericks have no rookies on the active roster, but six players with 10 or more years experience played.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Germany's ambassador to the U.S., Klaus Scharioth, led a large contingent of his countrymen, who were there to watch Nowitzki. They met with him by the Dallas bench before the game.

NOTABLE: The Mavericks have won 42 games-and none by 20 points or more. The Wizards have won 15-two by more than 20.
