Suns-Raptors Preview

The Phoenix Suns don't sit too far out of the playoff picture.

An upcoming six-game road trip could go a long way in determining their fate.

Looking to improve its position in the Western Conference, Phoenix begins its trek Friday night seeking a 13th consecutive victory over the Toronto Raptors.

Despite leading by as many as 18 points versus Atlanta on Wednesday night, the Suns (28-27) found themselves in a tie game with five minutes remaining before pulling out a 105-97 victory.

"It was a good team win to start off (after) the break," said Jared Dudley, who made 4 of 5 from 3-point range and scored 17 points off the bench. "We know what the task is at stake. Basically, we are a couple games back of the playoffs, home game before the road trip; we needed to come out with energy, get a win to get us going. We know what we need to do and this is a stepping stone."

Channing Frye keyed the win, scoring six of his 20 points in the final four minutes. He finished 4 of 8 on 3-point attempts and is shooting 54.2 percent from beyond the arc over the last three games while averaging 25.0 points.

The Suns are 11-1 when he makes at least four 3-pointers.

Phoenix remains in 10th place in the West, two games behind Memphis for the eighth and final playoff spot.

"We're approaching this like we're a college team and we're trying to get into the NCAA tournament," coach Alvin Gentry said. "We've got 27 games left and we don't have a conference tournament, so we've got to have an at-large bid."

Gentry's team could make up some ground during the first half of this trip with three games against opponents with sub-.500 records - Toronto, Indiana and New Jersey.

The Suns, who have won five of seven on the road, have won six straight in Toronto while averaging 121.5 points. They've outscored the Raptors by an average of 12.2 points during their 12-game win streak in the series overall, which dates to a 101-94 loss Feb. 10, 2004.

Steve Nash, who grew up in British Columbia, has had at least 16 assists in each of his last three trips back to Canada. He is looking for a season-best eighth consecutive double-double after registering 13 points and 10 assists versus the Hawks.

While Nash continues to excel, Vince Carter is averaging 8.7 points on 37.7 percent shooting - including 2 of 17 from 3-point range - in his last seven games. Carter, though, has averaged 24.9 points against the Raptors in Toronto, where he spent his first six-plus seasons.

The Raptors (16-42) snapped Chicago's four-game winning streak with a 118-113 victory Wednesday night as both Andrea Bargnani and DeMar DeRozan scored 24 points.

Toronto, allowing opponents to shoot an NBA-worst 48.3 percent, improved to 9-2 when holding teams under 43.8 percent.

"Our main key is really defense, our defense definitely won us this game," said Amir Johnson, who scored 17 points. "If we can play defense and keep scoring like we do, we could be a problem."

It could be difficult to slow down the Suns, who average 105.1 points to rank fourth in the league. While offense has been its catalyst, Phoenix has surrendered 95.2 points per game - 10.1 below its season average - en route to winning eight of 11.

Phoenix acquired point guard Aaron Brooks from Houston on Thursday for guard Goran Dragic and a first-round draft pick. Brooks is averaging 11.6 points and 3.8 assists in 34 games.

Carter scores 17 as Suns rout Raptors 110-92

TORONTO (AP) Vince Carter and Phoenix jumped all over struggling Toronto. That's just how it goes when the Suns play the Raptors.

Carter scored 17 points, Marcin Gortat had 17 points and 11 rebounds and Phoenix beat Toronto 110-92 on Friday night for its 13th consecutive victory against the Raptors.

Carter had 11 points in the first quarter as Phoenix built a 35-14 lead.

"We just had to try to take the fight out of them early and often," Carter said.

Channing Frye scored 16 points and Steve Nash shook off a 2-for-12 shooting performance to collect 11 assists, seven points and seven rebounds for the Suns, who have won six of eight on the road and nine of 11 overall.

"I thought we did a good job of controlling the game," Suns coach Alvin Gentry said. "Although Steve didn't shoot the ball well, you can see how he can have total control over a game without being a scorer."

Gortat has recorded four double-doubles in his past six games.

"He's a good pack rebounder," Gentry said. "When guys are around in the lane he seems to go up and be able to clear space and come up with rebounds."

Winners of seven straight north of the border, Phoenix hasn't lost to Toronto since a 101-94 home decision on Feb 10, 2004. Carter led Toronto with 29 points in that game.

Andrea Bargnani scored 26 points and former Suns guard Leandro Barbosa had 15 in this one for the Raptors, who have lost 19 of 22.

As usual, Carter was showered with boos in his return to face his original team. Late in the third quarter, as he came to the sideline to take an inbounds pass, a fan yelled "Retire, Vince!" Carter turned and answered "Not yet."

"He hadn't played up here in a month of Sundays but everybody still seems to want to boo him when he comes in," Gentry said. "That's great and fine because I thought it got him really focussed and really aggressive. When he plays like that, we're a really good team."

Suns forward Grant Hill could tell Carter was fired up long before the opening tip.

"We sensed it in the layup line when he was doing windmills," Hill said "I'm like 'We haven't seen that.' He's feeling good and obviously you want to play well against your old team. He came out and did a great job."

Carter had been held below 10 points in five of his previous nine games and had scored more than 16 just once in that span but made five of seven shots in the first quarter. Frye added 10 points and Nash had seven assists as Phoenix built a 21-point lead, Toronto's biggest first-quarter deficit of the season.

Toronto scored the game's opening basket but the Suns immediately tied it on a half-court alley-oop from Nash to Carter. Phoenix was soon up 11-2 and the Raptors never led again.

"They jumped on us early and for whatever reason we were a step slow tonight," Raptors coach Jay Triano said. "We were slow reacting, we were slow going to the ball on the glass and they take advantage of that."

DeMar DeRozan scored 12 of his 14 points in the second but the Raptors still trailed 60-42 at halftime. Phoenix widened its lead in the third, carrying an 86-62 lead into the final quarter.

Mickael Pietrus scored 14 and Hakim Warrick 12 for Phoenix, which led by as many as 26.

Gentry said newly acquired guard Aaron Brooks is in Phoenix for a physical. He's expected to join the team in Indianapolis, where the Suns face the Pacers on Sunday.

Toronto hasn't won back to back games since Dec. 1 and 3, when it posted home wins over Washington and Oklahoma City. The Raptors are 8-32 since.

NOTES: Nash now has 9,007 career assists. ... The Suns outrebounded the Raptors 42-31. ... Bargnani scored 12 of Toronto's 14 points in the first quarter. ... Raptors forward Joey Dorsey (back) was inactive. ... This was the first of six straight road games for the Suns. They don't play at home again until March 8. ... Suns-Raptors notebook

THE FACTS: On Friday night at the Air Canada Centre, the Phoenix Suns rolled over the Toronto Raptors 110-92. The Suns took care of business early and their starters were able to rest late as the bench got extended burn during the fourth quarter. It was an odd night for Raptors fans who booed Vince Carter every time he touched the ball, but cheered loudly for Steve Nash when he was on the floor. Carter led the way for the Suns with 17 points while he tied a career-high with six steals. Marcin Gortat also added 17 points and 11 rebounds off of the bench.

QUOTABLE: "I don't think so. I mean, it's up to the Suns. I've always said I want to play for Phoenix. I'll just continue to play out my contract and then see what they want to do. If they want to rebuild and move me on then I'll accept that, but I've always said that I want to play for this team."

THE STAT: While the Raptors actually shot better than the Suns from the floor (51 percent for Toronto compared to 48 percent for Phoenix), the Suns connected on six 3-pointers while the Raptors only had one make from deep. As well, the Suns made 26 of their 33 free throw attempts, while the Raptors finished 15-for-23 from the line.

TURNING POINT: It's hard to have a turning point when one team jumps out to an 11-2 lead to start the game and leads by 21 after the opening 12 minutes. After being sharp offensively in a win against the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday, the Raptors' offense was anything but smooth on Friday night against the Suns. At the end of the first quarter, the Suns led 35-14 and never looked back. Those 14 points scored by the Raptors tied a Suns opponent season-low for points scored in a first quarter.

QUOTABLE II: "We try to figure this out. Is it youth? Is part of that youth and the growing of this team feeling too good about playing a game against Chicago and thinking you can just waltz in here and play? It's the NBA and if you are half a step slow or a half a step less prepared mentally for a game, you are going to get exploited and that happened in the first quarter."

HOT: Andrea Bargnani had a hot-shooting night in the loss, finishing with a game-high 26 points on 12-for-15 shooting. Of course, Bargnani did finish with just four rebounds and had three turnovers.

NOT: Nash showed the Raptors how to be effective despite having an off-shooting night. Nash finished with seven points on an unimpressive 2-for-12 shooting night, but also collected seven rebounds and dished 11 assists with just one turnover.

INSIDE THE ARENA: During halftime, Canadian rapper Maestro performed "Let Your Backbone Slide".

NOTABLE: Joey Dorsey did not play for the Raptors, missing his second straight game with back spasms. Aaron Brooks was not with the Suns a day after being acquired from the Rockets because he was in Phoenix after completing his physical. He is expected to join the team in Indiana for their game on Sunday. Hakim Warrick finished with 12 points and Mickael Pietrus scored 14 points off of the bench for the Suns. Leandro Barbosa came off the bench to score 15 points against his former team.
