With Kevin Durant and Dwight Howard as their respective centerpieces, the Oklahoma City Thunder and Orlando Magic are viable contenders for an NBA championship.

Only the Thunder made moves to improve their chances, while Howard and the Magic aren't happy with much lately.

With Kendrick Perkins and Nate Robinson possibly joining Durant in the lineup Friday night, the Thunder seek their first win at Orlando in almost seven years.

Oklahoma City (36-20) leads the Northwest Division this late in a season for the first time since winning it as the Seattle SuperSonics in 2005.

Durant is a major reason for the Thunder's success, leading the NBA in scoring for a second consecutive season, averaging 28.8 points in 2010-11 while his 7.1 rebounds tie Serge Ibaka for the team high.

Howard is Orlando's team leader with 23.0 points per game and his 13.9 rebounds rank second in the league, as the Magic (36-22) are fourth in the Eastern Conference.

Only one of these All-Stars, though, is getting help for the stretch run.

The Thunder landed Perkins and Robinson from Boston in exchange for forward Jeff Green, center Nenad Kristic, a 2012 first-round pick and cash prior to Thursday's trade deadline.

Perkins appears to be what Oklahoma City was looking for, a strong defender at center who helped the Celtics win the 2008 title and lose to the Los Angeles Lakers in seven games last season.

Oklahoma City allows an average of 102.3 points, easily the worst of the six division leaders.

"We had a unique opportunity to add a proven presence in our front court in acquiring Kendrick," general manager Sam Presti said. "He will help anchor our defense while Nate will add depth and athleticism to our backcourt."

Perkins, though, has played just 12 games since returning from knee injury sustained in Game 6 of the NBA finals. He's averaging 7.3 points and 8.1 rebounds, getting a season-high 13 boards with Boston while playing opposite Howard in a 91-80 win over Orlando on Feb. 6.

Robinson, averaging 7.1 points in 55 games - 11 starts - with the Celtics this season, will provide depth behind star guard Russell Westbrook.

The additions might be timely after Durant scored 30 with nine rebounds while Westbrook added 25 points and seven assists in a 109-105 loss at San Antonio. The other three Thunder starters combined for 18 points.

Westbrook had a triple-double with 32 points, 13 assists and 10 boards while Durant scored 36 in a 125-124 win over Orlando on Jan. 13.

The Thunder have dropped six consecutive visits to Orlando since a win there March 13, 2004.

The Magic have split their last 14 games, and Howard was livid following their 26.3 percent shooting in the fourth quarter of Wednesday's 111-105 loss to last-place Sacramento.

"We've been talking for a long time - all we seem to do is talk," Howard said. "We have a lot of talent, but talent won't win you championships. You get to the finals, both teams are very talented. That's how they got to the finals. But hard work, commitment-every play, every night is what gets you the championship.

"We're one of the most talented teams in the NBA. We're a deep team, we have guys that can do a lot of different things, but if you don't bring it, it's a waste of talent."

Howard is doing his part, averaging 31.3 points and 13.3 rebounds over the last three games. He had 39 points and 18 boards in the latest meeting with Oklahoma City.

Howard scores 40 as Magic beat Thunder 111-88

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) Dwight Howard was upset following Orlando's home loss to lowly Sacramento on Wednesday night, and openly criticized his team for its lack of effort and intensity.

The Magic apparently got the message.

Howard had 40 points and 15 rebounds, and Orlando had four players score in double figures in a 111-88 victory over the short-handed Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday night.

Jason Richardson added 17 points for the Magic, who earned their first victory since the All-Star break and have won three of their last four overall. J.J. Redick scored 16, Jameer Nelson finished with 14 points and Hedo Turkoglu had 10 assists.

Kevin Durant led the Thunder with 23 points and 16 rebounds. Russell Westbrook had 18 points, James Harden 16 and Daequan Cook 15.

Orlando shot 50 percent from the field, compared to 33 percent for the Thunder, and outrebounded Oklahoma City 53-46.

"That's what we're gonna need to be a really good team - all of those things," Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said.

Orlando hosts Charlotte on Sunday before beginning a three-game stretch that includes matchups with two of the East's top teams in Miami and Chicago. The Thunder return home to face the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday.

Oklahoma City dressed 11 players, but played without new trade acquisitions Kendrick Perkins, Nate Robinson and Nazr Mohammed.

The Magic were in control for most of the game and led by as many as 18 points in the third quarter. But the Thunder kept it interesting.

Oklahoma City closed to 80-70 heading into the fourth and Durant's jumper with 9:27 left got the Thunder within seven. The Magic answered with an 11-2 surge, capped by a Redick 3-pointer that made it 96-80 with 5:48 remaining.

"I think we played a lot better on the defensive end," said Howard, who blocked six shots. "Our help defense was great tonight and individual defense was great. We've just got to keep it up."

After the Sacramento loss, Van Gundy said he was looking to inject some much-needed energy into his team. He promised to go deeper into his bench before the game and played 10 players in the first half.

The Magic responded with one of their most energetic halves in recent memory and led 59-48 at the break.

Richardson, who was just 7 for 24 from beyond the arc in his previous five games, made his first two 3-point attempts against the Thunder and helped set the tone for the Magic, who shot 53 percent in the first half.

Richardson finished 5 for 7 from 3-point range.

The Thunder missed their first eight shots before Serge Ibaka made a jumper with 7:27 left in the first quarter. They finished the half just 15 for 41 (36 percent) and 29 for 87 for the game.

As well as Richardson shot for the Magic, he said defense was the main point of emphasis against the Thunder.

"I think Sacramento was one of those games when you are coming off the All-Star break, you look at their record, and we weren't ready to play," Richardson said. "If we want to be considered a contender this year, we have to come out and play every game like we did tonight. We gotta take what Dwight said and step up to the plate and be ready to play every night."

Thunder coach Scott Brooks called the Magic's defense "smothering."

"They played great defense throughout the night and made us take tough shots and it seems like every shot was contested," Brooks said.

Durant connected on just seven of his 22 attempts.

"They made some big shots," he said. "When we were on our way back, they made sure we didn't close the gap."

But it wasn't all smiles for the Magic.

Howard received his 15th technical foul with 5:02 remaining in the second quarter. He was fouled underneath by Nick Collison, but said something in the moments afterward that was heard by referee Monty McCutchen.

The call leaves Howard one tech away a league-mandated one-game suspension and $5,000 fine.

NOTES: Howard posted his fourth straight game with at least 30 points and earned his 47th double-double of the season. ... Oklahoma City recalled C Byron Mullens from the D-League's Tulsa 66ers. ... The Thunder's first practice with two of their three new additions (Robinson and Mohammed) is expected to be Saturday. C Perkins is expected to be out another week with a sprained left knee. ... NFL players Chris Johnson and Mike Sims-Walker, both Orlando natives, were in attendance.

THE FACTS: Dwight Howard went over 30 points for the fourth straight game and the Orlando Magic led almost all the way in a 111-88 victory over the depleted Oklahoma City Thunder.

The combination of Howard (40 points, 15 rebounds, six blocks) and Orlando's best 3-point shooting (10-for-22) in more than a month was way too much for the Thunder, who shook up their roster with two trades on Thursday and didn't have their new players yet.

Kevin Durant led Oklahoma City with 23 points on 7-for-22 shooting, and the team shot just 33 percent.

QUOTABLE: "Their defense was smothering. They made us take tough shots and it seemed like every shot was contested."

THE STAT: His 40-point game tied Howard's season high set Jan. 28 in a loss at Chicago. The 40th point came on an alley-oop dunk with two minutes left.

TURNING POINT: Howard had criticized the efforts of unnamed teammates Wednesday night after the Magic's home-court loss to Sacramento.

QUOTABLE III: "People look at is as me calling them out. My point was simple: I told them during the game more than once -- the teams that have been successful work hard every night and sacrifice for the team. You can't have individual goals or worry about contracts. If you concentrate on winning a championship, everything we want as individuals will come with that."

HOT: In his last four games, Howard has averaged 33.5 points, 13.8 rebounds and 3.5 blocks while shooting 75 percent from the floor and 78 percent from the free-throw line.

NOT: The Thunder missed 11 of their first 12 shots, falling behind by double digits in the first six minutes.

GOOD MOVE: Little-used forward Earl Clark was brought in early to help out with the defense of Durant and played 22 minutes.

BAD MOVE: The timing of the Thunder's trades may have taken them out of this game before it started. Kendrick Perkins, Nate Robinson and Nazr Mohammed, all acquired in trades on Thursday, were in Oklahoma City taking their physicals.

ROOKIE WATCH: Thunder center Cole Aldrich played 15 scoreless minutes with five rebounds and four fouls.

NOTABLE: Other than Howard, who has done it twice, the last player to finish with at lest 40 points, 15 rebounds and six blocks in a game was Shaquille O'Neal on Nov. 19, 1999 (41, 17, 7) . . . Howard picked up his 15th technical foul, leaving him one T short of a one-game suspension . . . Magic guard Gilbert Arenas is 3-for-38 in 3-point shooting over the last 12 games.
