Pistons-Pacers Preview

The Indiana Pacers are playing some of their best basketball under interim coach Frank Vogel but suffered consecutive losses heading into the All-Star break, including an overtime defeat to the Detroit Pistons.

After a dominant performance in their first game back, the Pacers have a chance to avenge that loss and record their sixth win in seven home contests Wednesday night.

The Pacers (25-30) had won seven of their first eight games after Vogel took over for Jim O'Brien on Jan. 30, but fell 110-103 at home to Miami on Feb. 15. They followed with a 115-109 overtime loss at Detroit the next evening, ending a six-game win streak over their Central Division rivals.

Indiana rallied from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to send it to the extra period, but was outscored 11-5 over those five minutes. The Pacers allowed the Pistons to shoot 51.5 percent and finish a point shy of matching their season scoring high.

"Sometimes a team goes on vacation one game early for the All-Star break, and this is what happens," forward Danny Granger said. "We didn't do anything on defense and we got beat."

Indiana had a much better defensive showing in a 113-96 win in Washington on Tuesday, limiting the Wizards to 39.8 percent shooting. Granger scored 21 points and Roy Hibbert had 16 after tying a career high with 29 in the loss to Detroit.

All 12 players who saw the floor scored in Tuesday's win, and the Pacers benefited from 26 fast-break points in the first three quarters.

"There's a lot of talk around the NBA about the super-teams and the powerhouses and all that," Vogel said. "We don't have any of those super-superstars, but we've got 15 guys that can play, and our depth is going to win us a lot of games."

The Pistons, meanwhile, suffered their fourth loss in five games, 108-100 to visiting Houston on Tuesday, despite getting 56 points from their bench.

Detroit (21-37) used some of those to rally from an 11-point deficit - after leading by as much as 11 in the first half - but was outscored 15-6 over the final 3:53.

Will Bynum had a team-best 21 points off the bench, and Rodney Stuckey was the top scorer among the Pistons starters with 19. Tayshaun Prince, who had 25 points against Indiana, missed all nine of his field goal attempts and finished with one point.

"This is one of those rare games that he didn't have it going as much," coach John Kuester said. "We had to have some other people step up and I thought we did."

Granger had it going in the loss to Detroit with 28 points, and he's averaged 29.1 in his last nine matchups.

With his help, the Pacers are hoping to earn their fifth consecutive home win over the Pistons.

"We can't give up games that we're supposed to win," Granger said. "We're really trying to move up to either the seven or the six seed, which we can do. It's just a matter of putting a lot of wins together."

Pacers beat Pistons on late dunk

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) The Indiana Pacers picked up right where they left off before the All-Star break.

With Brandon Rush providing late-game dramatics, and second-year forward Tyler Hansbrough scoring 21 points, the Pacers remained one of the NBA's hottest February teams with a 102-101 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night.

"They're not all going to be pretty," Pacers interim coach Frank Vogel said. "Sometimes you have to grind it out and get the 'W."'

The 'W' - and Rush's dramatics - came on a late-game dunk.

With 11.1 seconds remaining, Austin Daye's 17-foot jump shot gave the Pistons their first lead since the first quarter, but on the ensuing possession, Danny Granger drew a double-team and found Rush - who scored nine points starting for injured Mike Dunleavy - for a dunk in traffic with 5.4 seconds remaining.

"We were one play away from winning the game," said Pistons forward Tracy McGrady, who had 10 of his 16 points in the second half.

The Pistons rallied from a 16-point second-half deficit.

"Our guys showed a lot of courage tonight," Pistons coach John Kuester said. "We faced a team that was scrappy. In the second half, I thought we did an outstanding job."

Rodney Stuckey drove the lane on the Pistons possession after Rush's dunk, but his pass out of bounds secured the victory for Indiana, which won for the ninth time in 12 games since Vogel took over for Jim O'Brien in late January.

"That was huge," said Pacers forward Josh McRoberts, who combined with Hansbrough to give the Pacers 31 points and 13 rebounds from the power forward position.

"We are gaining confidence and are learning how to win and close games out. We will be playing top teams and we have to make top plays to win these games."

Hansbrough had a team high 12 rebounds, with eight coming on the offensive end for Indiana, which held a tenuous lead much of the fourth quarter before the final back-and-forth sequence.

On Indiana's game-winning play, Kuester said McGrady played solid defense on Granger, who had 17 of his 18 points in the second half.

"What we had done was a great job on Granger," Kuester said. "He had a great stop and then all of a sudden, we loaded and Rush slashed behind our guys and I didn't think he could find him, but he did. It was a great play."

Greg Monroe scored seven of his career-high 27 points in the third quarter for the Pistons and Granger scored 10 of his points during the fourth quarter.

"Greg Monroe had a terrific night," Vogel said. "We couldn't stop him."

The victory allowed Indiana to remain one of the league's hottest teams.

The Pacers, who won seven of 10 games before the All-Star break, have won their two games coming out of the break, having won in Washington, 113-96, Tuesday.

McGrady had 16 points and and Ben Wallace had 10 rebounds for Detroit, which shot 48.8 percent and 50.0 percent from 3-point range, but lost for a 10th time in 14 games.

"It felt good to be in the game like that, but I'd rather come out with a win," Monroe said. "We have to play the whole game like we did the fourth quarter and we might have a different outcome."

Point guard Darren Collison had 11 points and six assists, and rookie Paul George added 10 points each for Indiana, which shot 44.2 percent from the field despite making just 3 of 17 3-point field goals.

"It was a team effort and a big win," said George, who had two alley-oop dunks in the fourth quarter. "When teams make runs at you and you can answer the bell ring them up, that's playing NBA basketball."

Notes: Dunleavy has been ruled out indefinitely after sustaining a broken right thumb against Washington Tuesday. Rush, who played sparingly under Vogel, started in his place. Vogel said he is keeping rookie George with the second team to maintain continuity on that unit. . . . Rookie point guard Lance Stephenson was active for Indiana Wednesday, and in Dunleavy's absence, he has moved into the third point guard role. . . . Eight-time tennis grand slam champion Jimmy Connors attended Wednesday's game.

THE FACTS: Tyler Hansbrough scored a game-high 21 points and Brandon Rush provided late-game dramatics -- and the winning points -- for the Indiana Pacers Wednesday.

Rush, starting for injured Mike Dunleavy, dunked in traffic with 5.4 seconds remaining to give the Pacers a 102-101 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday in front of 12,214 at Conseco Fieldhouse.

The Pistons trailed by 16 points early in the second half, but Greg Monroe scored 14 of his game-high 27 points in the third and fourth quarters as the Pistons cut into the lead.

Detroit got to within two early in the fourth period, but didn't lead until Austin Daye's 17-foot jump shot from the left side of the basket with 11.1 remaining.

On the ensuing possession, Danny Granger found Rush driving in the lane, and his dunk gave Indiana a second consecutive victory out of the All-Star break.

QUOTABLE: "These two games [after the All-Star break] there will be an element of rust, but we got out of it 2-0."

THE STAT: Granger is the Pacers' go-to player offensively, and on Wednesday he played like it when the Pacers needed it the most. He scored 17 of his 18 points in the second half, and not only did he find Rush in the lane late, his 3-point field goal with 2:53 remaining gave Indiana a 98-95 lead after Detroit had gained momentum. Ten of his points came in the fourth period.

TURNING POINT: In this one, the game didn't turn until the Pacers' final possession. The Pistons, after falling behind by 16 points, controlled the game's momentum after that, but when Detroit double-teamed Granger on Indiana's final possession, Rush got open enough in the lane to catch the pass cleanly and finish the play with a dunk. A turnover by Rodney Stuckey gave Indiana possession leading by the final margin with 1.0 remaining.

HOT: Hard as it may have been to believe a month ago, the Pacers are hot. They lost 17 of their last 23 games under coach Jim O'Brien, but since replacing O'Brien with interim Vogel, the Pacers have won nine of 12 games, with the only losses coming to the Heat in Miami and in overtime against Detroit in the game before the All-Star break. The run has moved Indiana into eighth place in the Eastern Conference.

NOT: The Pistons beat the Pacers in overtime heading into the All-Star break, but aside from that victory, they have lost 10 of 13 games. . . . The Pacers have shot 6 of 33 from 3-point range in the last two games.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Vogel has been consistent in his belief that McRoberts and Hansbrough should be productive, effective players at the power forward position. He has kept McRoberts in the starting lineup, but Hansbrough in essence has played as vital a role off the bench, and on Wednesday, it was Hansbrough who keyed the Pacers in the second quarter. He finished the half with 14 points, providing energy and second-chance points, and finished the game with 12 rebounds, including eight on the offensive end. Hansbrough's double-double was his third of the season.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Eight-time tennis grand slam champion Jimmy Connors attended the game.

QUOTABLE III: "It's very disappointing, especially when you give yourselves a chance to win the ballgame. The second half we came out with a lot more energy. Had we played that way for two halves, we probably would have won the game. We were one play away from winning the game."

ROOKIE WATCH: Pacers rookie Paul George continues to emerge as a solid presence in the lineup, scoring 10 points and finishing with five rebounds against Detroit. He had two alley-oop dunks in the fourth quarter as Indiana fought to hold the lead.

NOTABLE: Dunleavy missed the game and is out indefinitely after sustaining a broken right thumb against Washington Tuesday. Rush, little-used under Vogel, started in his place, with George staying on the second team to maintain the continuity of what has emerged as a productive Indiana backup unit. . . .
