Heat-Raptors Preview

It hasn't received the same hype as Miami's first visit to Cleveland, but fans in Toronto have been eagerly awaiting the Heat's first trip to Canada.

Former Raptor Chris Bosh will make his first appearance in Toronto on Wednesday night when Miami looks for its 10 win in 11 games.

Bosh, the Raptors' all-time leader in points (10,275), rebounds (4,776) and blocks (600) in seven seasons with Toronto (15-40), didn't go on national TV to announce his free-agency plans like LeBron James, but his decision to leave the Raptors and join the Heat (40-15) also left Toronto fans smarting.

A couple weeks after joining James and Dwyane Wade in Miami, the six-time All-Star forward insulted a city by saying "Toronto is different," and he didn't want to go there.

Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo also took a shot at his former player saying Bosh was "checked out" late last season and chose not to play some of Toronto's final games. He also said Bosh, James and Wade had all planned to play together years ago.

"The fans think he's a traitor," Toronto's Sonny Weems said. "It would mean a lot to them if we can get this win, and it would mean a lot to our team."

Bosh is prepared for the same kind of booing and heckling James received in his first game back in Cleveland, and has no regrets about how he left the Raptors.

"At no time did I feel I said anything degrading or bad or acted uncivilized," Bosh said before Tuesday's 110-103 win over Indiana. "I'm pretty happy with the way things went."

Bosh's new team got off to a rocky start this season, but Miami moved within percentage points of Boston atop the Eastern Conference with Tuesday's victory, its ninth in 10 games.

Wade tied a franchise record for most points in a first half with 31, and finished with 41, while James scored 27 and Bosh added 27. The trio combined for 19 of Miami's 28 points in the final quarter to help the Heat recover after squandering a 24-point lead.

Wade also led the way in Miami's first game against the Raptors on Nov. 13, scoring 31 points in a 109-100 win.

Bosh didn't have much success in his first game against his former team, finishing with 12 points and six rebounds. He missed the second meeting, a 120-103 victory Jan. 22 because of a sprained left ankle, and Wade also sat out with a migraine.

James carried the Heat in that one, finishing with 38 points and 11 rebounds, and Mike Miller also stepped up with a season-high 32 points. Miller, though, will not play in this game after taking an elbow to the head Tuesday.

While the Heat are looking like a title contender, the Raptors are two losses away from matching last season's total.

Although Toronto hasn't had much to celebrate lately, it defeated the Los Angeles Clippers 98-93 on Sunday, just its second victory in 18 games. Andrea Bargnani, who has totaled 50 points in two games against Miami this year, scored 27, while Ed Davis added 13 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.

Coach Jay Triano said his team played with a bit more energy because none of his players wanted to be dunked on by Blake Griffin.

"I wish we could play a big game every night," DeMar DeRozan said. "It seems like every time we play a team with a superstar and a lot of hype around it, we definitely step up."

That shouldn't be a problem with the Heat coming to town.

Wade scores 28 as Heat beat Raptors 103-95

TORONTO (AP) The Miami Heat banded together to get Chris Bosh a win against his former team.

Dwyane Wade scored 28 points, LeBron James had 23 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists and the Heat beat the Toronto Raptors 103-95 Wednesday night.

Bosh finished with 25 points and the Heat went into the All-Star break having won 10 of 11.

"I know firsthand how important it is to finish strong going into the break," James said. "You feel good about All-Star weekend, you walk around feeling good."

Before arriving in Toronto, the Heat had talked about winning this one for Bosh. That sentiment was reinforced by a handwritten note on the pregame scouting board that read "Band of Brothers."

"We wanted to be there for him as a brother and a teammate," James said.

Andrea Bargnani scored 17 of his 38 points in the fourth quarter and DeMar DeRozan finished with 24 but no other Raptor had more than eight points. Toronto never led after the first six minutes and lost their 17th game in 19.

"We tried different guys in there, even tried going big to see if we could get one more scorer in there, or at least get rebounds if we weren't going to get that scorer," Raptors coach Jay Triano said.

Miami took an 88-79 lead on Wade's 3-point play with 6:37 left. Bargnani made a free throw on a 3-second call, then he and DeRozan hit back-to-back jumpers as the Raptors cut it to 88-84 with 5:48 remaining.

James made 5 of 6 from the line over the next two minutes, giving the Heat a 93-87 lead with 3:53 to go.

After Bosh made 1 of 2 from the line, missing for the first time after hitting his first nine, Bargnani answered with a 3, making it 94-90 with 2:43 remaining.

James made another free throw and, after DeRozan missed a reverse layup, Erick Dampier tipped in Wade's miss, giving Miami a 97-90 lead with 1:50 left.

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said his team "did just enough."

"We're all happy for Chris," Spoelstra said. "It was not our best game but guys definitely wanted to band together and win it for him."

Even though the Heat are on a roll, Spoelstra is happy to give his team some downtime.

"We all could probably use this All-Star break right now, get a little bit of rest and get away and then make this final push in the final third of the season to really take another step forward as a team and try to find our ceiling," he said.

Returning to Toronto for the first time since joining James and Wade in Miami after seven seasons with the Raptors, Bosh was booed from the moment he took the floor for pre-game warmups, even when he was shown on the video screen during the American national anthem. Fans also booed when the camera panned to James.

"That's sports today," Spoelstra said. "I don't think anything is off limits anymore."

The boos, however, were tamer than the hostile reception James received when the Heat visited Cleveland on Dec. 2, or the jeers directed at Vince Carter when he returned to Toronto after being traded to New Jersey.

Wade agreed that Toronto's fans had failed to generate the same unfriendly atmosphere the Heat faced in Cleveland.

"It's not even close," Wade said. "You can't compare."

After the game, Bosh blew kisses to the crowd as he walked off the floor to a mixture of cheers and boos. Asked whether the kisses were sincere or sarcastic, Bosh said they had been both.

"It's a sarcastic one to all the naysayers and it's real to all the good supporters," he said. "People are going to take it the way they want to. The most important thing is the win tonight. We wanted to keep our momentum going."

Bargnani and DeRozan each scored 10 points in the first quarter, but the Heat got seven from James and six each from Bosh and Wade to lead 29-27 after one.

Bosh scored eight points in the second but James missed a 3 with less than a second left. Miami led 50-46 at the half.

Wade had 11 in the third and Miami opened the quarter with an 8-2, including four points from Bosh, to open a 10-point lead, its biggest of the game at that point. But after he was fouled by Mario Chalmers, Leandro Barbosa made three free throws with 33 seconds left, cutting the deficit to 80-72 heading into the fourth.

Notes: Ed Davis had 13 rebounds and Amir Johnson had 11 for the Raptors. ... Toronto is 0-3 against Miami this season. The Raptors host the Heat again on April 13, the final game of the regular season for both teams. ... Bosh spoke to a crowd of more than 40 reporters about an hour before the game. ... Heat forward Mike Miller, who scored a season-high 32 points in Miami's 120-103 home win over Toronto on Jan. 22, sat out with a right-eye injury. Miller has taken hard hits in each of the past two games, including an elbow to the head Tuesday at Indiana. THE FACTS: On Wednesday night the Miami Heat defeated the Toronto Raptors 103-95, making Chris Bosh's return to the Air Canada Centre a pleasant one for the former Raptor. Bosh scored 25 points for the Heat while Dwyane Wade had 28 points and LeBron James was two assists shy of a triple-double with 23 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists. Andrea Bargnani led the Raptors with 38 points.

QUOTABLE: "Well, it's not that I'm happy I didn't have to go anywhere. It was a decision that was made. Miami just was the best city to choose. Not saying anything about Toronto, but it wasn't a focal point of mine. I wasn't coming here. And not saying nothing about Cleveland, [but] I wasn't going there neither. It was just Miami was the best city."

THE STAT: Free throw shooting and personal fouls. While the Raptors were called for 24 personal fouls, the Heat had 14 and the free throw discrepancy showed in the final score of a singe-digit victory. The Heat shot 78 percent from the line, hitting 29 of their 37 attempts while the Raptors attempted just 20 free throws, making 17.

TURNING POINT: While the game was close in the first half and the Heat held a four-point lead to open the third quarter, things quickly turned as they reeled off 13-4 run that put them ahead by 13. The Raptors fought back in the fourth quarter and kept it close until the end, but there was a break in the intensity of the crowd during that run and the momentum shifted towards the Heat.

QUOTABLE II: "You know, we are human. And people that supported you so long, which I don't know every single person, every single Raptors fan, but a town that supported you for so long, just to hear some of that stuff, it makes you upset. I just tried to channel that into the game and use that anger as aggression and just help my team win."

HOT: Bargnani finished the game with a game-high 38 points on 15-for-26 shooting. He shot 5-for-6 from beyond the arc and tied a career-high with five made 3-pointers.

NOT: The trio of Sonny Weems, Amir Johnson and Jose Calderon combined to shoot 4-for-21 from the floor. Johnson did finish with 11 rebounds and Calderon had 14 assists, but Weems was a complete non-factor.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Jon Bon Jovi was in attendance and received a loud ovation from the crowd when he was shown on the jumbotron between the third and fourth quarter while "Living on a Prayer" played in the arena. The announced crowd was the third-highest in Air Canada Centre history.

ROOKIE WATCH: Raptors rookie Ed Davis added another double-digit rebounding night to his resume, finishing with 13 rebounds to go with his eight points in 22 minutes of play.

NOTABLE: The Heat are now 3-0 against the Raptors this season. Toronto's DeMar DeRozan will compete in the dunk contest during All-Star Saturday night. James, Bosh and Wade will play in the All-Star Game while James Jones will compete in the 3-point shooting competition representing the Heat.
