Two games into the post-Jerry Sloan era, the Utah Jazz are winless.

One more defeat, and they'll do something that last happened nearly six years before Sloan became Utah's coach.

The scuffling Jazz look to avoid losing five straight home games for the first time in nearly 30 years Wednesday night when they face a surging Golden State Warriors team they've routinely beaten in Salt Lake City.

Sloan, Utah's coach since December 1988, abruptly retired following a loss to Chicago last Wednesday, and the Jazz (31-25) have dropped their first two games under Tyrone Corbin - both to Phoenix. They're just 4-12 since Jan. 17, falling from third in the Western Conference and atop the Northwest Division to eighth in the West and five games back of division-leading Oklahoma City.

In Tuesday's 102-101 loss in Phoenix, Utah seemed to be in control, leading by eight with less than 7 minutes to play, but was outscored 21-12 the rest of the way. Al Jefferson had a season-best 32 points after scoring four on 2 of 14 shooting in Friday's 95-83 home loss to the Suns.

"We played a lot better a lot longer than we did the other night," Corbin said. "The guys will continue to work on the things we've been working in practice the last couple days and we are going to turn the corner. As long as we continue to fight and bring the effort, we'll make shots and we'll get some wins."

Another loss in their final game before the All-Star break, however, would be hard to swallow.

The Jazz have dropped four straight in Utah since an 83-78 win over Charlotte on Jan. 31, and haven't lost five consecutive home games since a franchise-worst 12-game skid Feb. 15-March 29, 1982.

Utah has lost two of three to the Warriors (25-29) this season, but both of those defeats came at Oracle Arena. The Jazz beat Golden State 108-95 in Salt Lake City on Dec. 13, and have won eight of the last nine meetings there.

In the teams' last meeting on Jan. 30, two-time All-Star Deron Williams sat out with a hyperextended right wrist and the Warriors won 96-91, despite a season-low two points on 1 of 9 shooting from Monta Ellis. Stephen Curry carried the Warriors with 27 points.

That victory over Utah started Golden State's current run.

The Warriors defeated New Orleans 102-89 on Tuesday, and have won six of eight, with five of those victories coming against teams with winning records.

Surprisingly, Golden State's defense has keyed this turnaround. The Warriors, fourth-worst in opponents' scoring at 105.6 points, have limited teams to fewer than 100 points in five of their past six wins.

"It's all been about effort," Golden State's David Lee said.

Although the Warriors are playing much better, most of that success has come at home. They've dropped three straight road games and are 6-18 away from Oracle Arena.

At Salt Lake City in December, Ellis had another subpar performance, finishing with 16 points - 9.2 less than his team-leading average.

Williams led all scorers with 30 points in that game, while C.J. Miles added 20 on 9 of 14 shooting. Miles didn't fare nearly as well in the two losses to Golden State, however, totaling 19 points on 6 of 24 from the field.

Ellis scores 35, Warriors beat Jazz 107-100

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Monta Ellis sent the Utah Jazz into the All-Star break with lingering concerns.

His Golden State Warriors, meanwhile, can rest easy after a couple of big wins, including Wednesday night's 107-100 win over the Jazz, who are 0-3 since coach Jerry Sloan retired.

"This is a big step for us," Warriors coach Keith Smart said, whose team has won six straight against opponents with winning records. "Knowing that this team is desperate ... to get a win, our guys fought through it."

Ellis scored 35 points as Golden State kept new Jazz head coach Ty Corbin winless.

The Jazz (31-26) will go into the All-Star break without any momentum having lost 13 of their last 17, still dealing with injuries and trying to find their way under a new coach.

"The break came at the right time," said Jazz star Deron Williams, whose shooting woes continued. He was 5 of 13 and 1 of 5 on 3-pointers.

The Warriors (26-29) have won three straight.

They did it despite an off night for star guard Stephen Curry, who was 1 of 7 on the night. His only basket came on a reverse layup that helped seal the win for Golden State.

The Jazz were without starters Andrei Kirilenko (sprained ankle) and Raja Bell (strained calf), and reserve guard Ronnie Price (sprained toe).

Corbin acknowledged before the game that this was the toughest jam the Jazz have been in all season. Not only are they going through a coaching transition, they had only nine players active.

Plus, they were on a back-to-back, having lost 102-101 in Phoenix on Tuesday night.

"We have to stay strong, stay confident," Corbin said. "I believe in these guys."

The game was tied at 48 at halftime and at 76 through three quarters.

The Jazz went ahead 90-89 on a putback by Al Jefferson. But Ellis followed with a driving layup and Reggie Williams hit a 3-pointer for a 94-90 lead with 6:09 remaining.

Ellis scored five straight to make it 99-92.

Williams' 3-pointer cut it to 103-100 with 52 second remaining, but Curry scored and Dorell Wright added a pair of free throws.

The Warriors made 8 of 19 3-pointers, while the Jazz shot 3 of 14.

Jefferson led the Jazz with 23 points, Paul Millsap added 22 and C.J. Miles 20.

A power outage knocked out half of the overhead lights in the second quarter, and after a 2-minute delay, officials opted to keep playing, deeming it bright enough.

All of the lights were still not on when the Jazz went on a 7-0 run to start the second half.

"We had enough light in there to play," Ellis said of EnergySolutions Arena that for a while late in the second quarter looked more like a dimly lit high school venue.

Miles banked in a 3-pointer as the shot clock wound down then followed with a steal and dunk to give the Jazz a 55-48 lead. He gave Utah a 9-point lead, 61-52, with a driving layup with 8:27 left.

A pair of 3-pointers by Charlie Bell and Wright cut Utah's lead to 65-62 with 6 minutes left in the third.

Then it was Ellis' turn. He hit a 3-pointer and jumper to cut Utah's lead to 70-69 with 2:42 left in the third quarter.

Curry, who scored a game-high 27 points in a 96-81 Warriors victory on Jan. 30, had only two points at halftime. He started 0 for 6, including 0 for 3 from 3-point range.

"I got into foul trouble and missed my first four shots so the bench came in a did a great job ... then in the fourth quarter Monta took over," said Curry.

Ellis said he was just happy to take what the defense gave him, which were shots outside as well as off dribble penetration.

"I've got to give credit to my big men," Ellis said. "They set nice screens for me."

Utah's Williams, who missed the first game against the Warriors because of a sprained wrist, entered Wednesday's rematch still lacking confidence in his shot. He was just 5 of 13 in Tuesday's loss to Phoenix, including 0 of 3 from 3-point range.

He came out more aggressive Wednesday and but missed two 3-pointers in the final minute.

Notes: Edgar Renteria, the 2010 World Series Most Valuable Player, attended Wednesday's game. ... With his eighth assist Wednesday, Utah's Williams became the fourth player in Jazz history to reach 4,000 career assists. ... Corbin said before the game that he selfishly hoped Williams would "shut it down" and rest his body rather than participate in this weekend's All-Star activities, but acknowledged he would simply tell his star guard to "be careful."

THE FACTS: Monta Ellis had 35 points and seven assists as the Golden State Warriors defeated the Utah Jazz 107-100 in the final game for both teams before the Al-Star break on Wednesday night.

The win capped a solid stretch for the Warriors, who have won seven of their last nine games. Dorell Wright chipped in 22 points and five rebounds for Golden State.

For the reeling Jazz, who are 4-13 in their last 17 games, Al Jefferson had 23 points and 11 rebounds and Paul Millsap had 22 points.

QUOTABLE: "This is a big step for us. Knowing that this team [Utah] was desperate, they had to try and get a win and our guys fought through it. They were fatigued from last night and they fought through it and they stayed within themselves."

THE STAT: 5. The loss was Utah's fifth straight home defeat. Before Wednesday, the Jazz hadn't lost five consecutive home games since the 1981-82 season. That team lost 12 straight home games.

TURNING POINT: With the Warriors leading 94-92, Ellis hit a near-impossible shot. He was fouled hard by Earl Watson, and drained a 20-foot jumper while falling backward. The three-point play gave Golden State a five-point lead with 3:23 left to play, and seemingly broke the Jazz's will. A layup in traffic by Reggie Williams with two minutes left to play put the Warriors up 101-94 and put the game away.

QUOTABLE II: "I think we're coming out of [our recent funk] and I recognize we're short-handed and we've been through some adversity. We're looking forward to coming out of it and having a good chance to make a run in the second half [of the season]."

HOT: Ellis was unconscious in the final three quarters, making 13 of his last 17 attempts. Golden State's Williams shot 4-for-6 and scored 10 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter. Millsap scored the game's first six points and Utah's first eight points. He shot 8-for-13.

NOT: Stephen Curry missed his first six shot attempts and foul trouble limited him to playing 21 minutes. He did, however, score on a reverse layup to put the Warriors up 105-100 with 31.7 seconds left. The Jazz shot a lousy 30.4 percent in the fourth quarter. Deron Williams was 1-for-5 from 3-point range. In Utah's last eight games, he is 7-for-39 from long range.

GOOD MOVE: Ellis stayed in attack mode throughout the game, and no one on the Jazz could slow him down.

BAD MOVE: Watson made a terrible decision with 6:51 left in the game. He attempted an off-balance 3-pointer with 10 seconds left on the shot clock, missed and the Warriors rebounded. Ellis scored on the other end, and Utah never led again.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Wright, who will compete in the 3-point contest during All-Star Weekend, continued his breakout season. With 22 points, he scored more than 20 for the 17th time this season.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Edgar Renteria, the reigning World Series MVP for the San Francisco Giants who now plays for the Cincinnati Reds, was in attendance and introduced to the crowd in the second quarter.

ROOKIE WATCH: Gordon Hayward started for the Jazz and had five points and three rebounds in 33 minutes. Jeremy Evans played 10 minutes for the Jazz and had six points and six rebounds. For the Warriors, Ekpe Udoh went scoreless in 15 minutes and Jeremy Lin had five points in six minutes.

NOTABLE: The Jazz's Williams dished his 4,000th career assist against the Warriors. He is the fourth player in Jazz history to have 4,000 assists, joining John Stockton, Karl Malone and Rickey Green. Utah played with just nine players because of injuries to Andrei Kirilenko, Mehmet Okur, Raja Bell and Ronnie Price. Golden State's bench outscored Utah's 31-12. The Warriors have won six straight games against teams with winning records.
