Kevin Durant and Monta Ellis are among the premier scorers in the NBA, but only one has been able to help his team into first place.

A key stretch could have the Oklahoma City Thunder widening their lead.

Durant and the Thunder wrap up a two-game swing against Ellis and the Golden State Warriors on Sunday night.

Durant leads the league with 29.1 points per game while Ellis is sixth at 25.1. The Thunder (34-18) have been able to capitalize on Durant's superb play to lead the Northwest Division by four games over Denver.

The Warriors (23-29) haven't been as successful, sitting third in the Pacific and 5 1/2 games behind Portland for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Durant has thrived against Golden State, averaging 33.7 points over the last 10 meetings, resulting in seven wins. The forward scored 28 points in Oklahoma City's 114-109 home win over the Warriors on Dec. 5 in the first of three meetings this season.

Durant will try to lead the Thunder to their fifth win six games. He scored 35 points in a 99-97 victory over Sacramento on Saturday.

"This was a good road win," coach Scott Brooks said. "We knew we were in for a tough game."

The win also started a stretch of four consecutive games against teams under .500. Following this contest, Oklahoma City returns home to face the Kings on Tuesday and will meet the Los Angeles Clippers on Feb. 22 after the All-Star break.

First, Durant and the Thunder will try to continue capitalizing against the Warriors, who are second in the league in points allowed per game at 106.1.

Oklahoma City is fifth in the NBA in scoring with 104.5 points per game, but is averaging 112.3 during a four-game road winning streak.

The Warriors have won four of five at home to improve to 17-11. They're also likely to be happy to be playing again at Oracle Arena following one of their worst performances this season, a 112-88 rout in Phoenix on Thursday.

One night earlier, Golden State shot 51.1 percent in a 116-114 home win over Denver.

"You share with the younger players how hard it is that you have to play every night in the NBA, back-to-back in particular," coach Keith Smart said, "but there's nothing you can do with it."

Ellis was just 4 of 13 shots from the floor to finish with eight points against the Suns. He had been averaging 28.8 over the previous four games.

Ellis outscored Durant on Dec. 5, finishing with 29 points. However, Stephen Curry tops them both with a season-high 39 points, three shy of his career-best.

Ellis' backcourt mate is averaging 24.0 points on 58.1 percent from the field while making 6 of 13 3-pointers in two home meetings with Oklahoma City.

Curry, though, hasn't come close to that type of production over the last three games, averaging 13.3 points after getting 12 against the Suns. He's second on the team with 18.8 points per game and leads with 5.8 assists.

Warriors stun Thunder behind Ellis' big night

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Even as Oklahoma City stumbles into the All-Star break, Kevin Durant insists it's far too soon for the Thunder to worry.

That, says Durant, would only complicate things.

"We can't panic at all," said Durant after scoring 29 points in a 100-94 loss to the Golden State Warriors on Sunday night. "If we do that, then that's when we'll really start to go downhill. We have to keep it positive, continue to keep working every day and learn from our mistakes."

The Thunder made plenty of mistakes against the Warriors, a growing concern for a team that went into the night as the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference behind the Spurs and Lakers.

Five days after an overtime home loss to Memphis and one night after having to hold off lowly Sacramento 99-97, Oklahoma City committed 20 turnovers, had only two offensive rebounds to 20 for Golden State and were outscored in the paint 44-28.

That wound up being the difference as the Warriors led the entire fourth quarter and responded nicely following their 24-point loss to Phoenix on Thursday.

"We knew we had to rebound ... to have a chance," Golden State coach Keith Smart said. "We couldn't give up second-chance points. Our guys did a great job of going to the glass early."

Monta Ellis had 32 points, David Lee added 23 points and a season-high 19 rebounds and Stephen Curry scored 23 points and had a season-high 13 assists to lead the Warriors to their sixth win in seven games.

Oklahoma City, the NBA's fifth highest-scoring team going in, failed to reach 100 points for the second consecutive night after hitting triple digits in its previous seven games.

The Thunder's 20 turnovers, three shy of their season-high, led to 20 points for the Warriors.

"I blame it on me," said Russell Westbrook, who had 21 points and five assists. "I've been not taking care of the ball and it's been rubbing off on my teammates. I have to figure out how to take care of the ball and make smart decisions for my teammates and not put them in bad situations."

Like Durant, Westbrook shrugged off the Thunder's recent stretch of games as a minor bump in the road. Oklahoma City has one more home game left before the break.

"I don't know why it would be panic time," Westbrook said. "All three games, we should have won. We just have to close out games and we didn't do that tonight."

Ellis made a 3-pointer, then fed Dorrel Wright for a fastbreak layup to give the Warriors (24-29) a 91-85 lead with 2:31 left. Westbrook then scored on back-to-back trips down the court, and following a bucket by Ellis, Green sank a 3-pointer to pull the Thunder within 93-92.

With Oklahoma City focusing its defense on Ellis and Curry, Reggie Williams buried a 3-pointer with 47.2 seconds remaining to bring the sold-out crowd at Oracle Arena to its feet. After Durant made two free throws, Curry drove the lane, then dished to Lee under the basket for a game-sealing dunk.

Curry's 13 assists were a season high for Golden State. He also didn't turn the ball over, a notable achievement for the second-year guard.

"Everything felt good out there," Curry said. "I was composed and if I got myself into tough situations, I was able to get out of there. It was a matter of being aggressive, but staying smart about it."

The 23 points are Lee's most since he had 31 in a loss to San Antonio on Jan. 24. Since then, the Warriors' prized offseason acquisition had been in a scoring slump and was averaging only 14.1 points in his previous eight games before busting out against the Thunder.

Oklahoma City (34-19) struggled offensively and looked out of sync most of the night while playing in the second half of a back-to-back. The Thunder beat Sacramento 99-97 on Saturday, then made the hour-long trip south to Oakland for the nationally televised game against the Warriors where they came up short most of the night.

Smart preached to his team before the game about containing Durant, but the Thunder's All-Star selection had nine points in the first quarter while Westbrook sat on the bench saddled in foul trouble.

Smart's message to his players kicked in in the second quarter as Durant scored just two points and took only two shots.

Westbrook took over, scoring the final nine points of the half for Oklahoma City but Golden State closed out the second quarter with a 10-4 run to take a 47-43 lead into halftime.

The Thunder briefly led in the third following a 3-pointer from Westbrook, but Curry and Lee combined for 10 points apiece, 14 of the Warriors' last 17 points, to help Golden State increase its lead to eight points.

Notes: The Thunder are 6-4 the second night of back-to-backs. ... Oklahoma City F James Harden left the game with a lower-back injury in the fourth quarter after he fell to the floor after getting the ball stolen by Ellis.

THE FACTS: Second-year Warriors guard Stephen Curry turned in one of his best performances as a professional, supplying 23 points and 13 assists while committing no turnovers as the Golden State Warriors beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 100-94 Sunday night. David Lee had 23 points and a season-high 19 rebounds for the Warriors, who outrebounded the Thunder 47-33 and thrived on second-chance opportunities. Monta Ellis added a game-high 33 points for Golden State. Kevin Durant scored 29 for the Thunder, but was held to 10-for-21 shooting and committed three turnovers.

THE STAT: Two. The Warriors came into the game with the league's worst defensive rebounding percentage -- the number of opponent misses that wind up in a team's hands -- at 68.7 percent. But they only allowed Oklahoma City two offensive boards all night while gobbling up 27 defensive rebounds -- 15 of them by Lee.

QUOTABLE: "Some of them have bonuses, I guess, for rebounds -- maybe we've got to put their contracts on the wall or something, to motivate them. I think you just have to keep emphasizing rebounding. That's something we said from the beginning of the year. We dropped off a little bit here and there, but we're capable of doing that when everyone does their part of rebounding."

TURNING POINT: Curry's game wasn't limited to the offensive end. His oft-maligned defense helped throw Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook off his game. Exhibit A: Westbrook's technical foul with 3:06 left in the third quarter after Curry drew the second of three charging calls that went against Westbrook. Curry converted the free throw to cap a 6-0 run that left the Warriors up 70-64, and though Oklahoma City would tie the game in the fourth quarter, they never did hold the lead again.

HOT: The Warriors were not necessarily scintillating from the field in the fourth quarter, going 10-for-21, but they were hot in terms of ball distribution, with assists on nine of those 10 buckets. Ellis had four assists, to go along with 12 points in the quarter. Curry had five dishes, including a pair of particularly impressive Steve Nash-style feeds -- in which he dribbled and wove around defenders before passing -- to Reggie Williams and Lee in the final 47.2 seconds to slam the door shut on the Thunder's comeback attempt.

QUOTABLE II: "He came in and controlled the game. He had two very big assists that he made by penetrating and maintaining his dribble, and not trying to throw the ball back through the middle of the floor, one to Reggie and one to Dorell (Wright). Two very big plays for him."

GOOD MOVE: With the Thunder ranked 28th in 3-point shooting, Golden State was able to gamble against the longball in order to help stifle Oklahoma City's pick-and-roll game. Curry and Ellis slid underneath screens by design, then did a good job reestablishing contact with Westbrook or Eric Maynor and cutting off easy access to the lane.

NOTABLE: The Thunder's total of two offensive rebounds ties the lowest ever given up by a Warriors team. Phoenix had only two offensive boards against Golden State on March 12, 1980. ... Nick Collison tied his season-high with 10 rebounds for the Thunder. ... Oklahoma City had been gunning for its second sweep in nine days of an all-road back-to-back set. The Thunder are now 6-4 on the second halves of a back-to-back. ... Oklahoma City has lost three straight games when playing on national television, after winning its first seven appearances this season. The Thunder are also 2-7 playing on Sundays.
